00:00Let's go to Barbados. General Election Day progresses in this nation, with citizens vowing to vote for strong leadership and
00:07the protection of national interests amid a complex regional scenario. More from Bridgetown, our correspondent Crystal Hoyer.
00:17Outside polling stations from Bridgetown to the rural parishes, the same themes kept surfacing. Leadership, the cost of living and
00:26crime. And after eight years before a parliamentary opposition, the question of democratic representation itself.
00:34With 93 candidates across 10 parties and two independents contesting 30 seats, voters have more choices than at any point
00:42in the recent memory.
00:44I think it's a hugely important task for us as citizens. I also think it's a major privilege that we
00:50have, an opportunity that was fought very hard for.
00:53So I wanted to make sure that I made my vote count and I voiced my own power, so to
00:59speak, as a citizen of the country.
01:00I think the country is at a very delicate and important stage. And when you consider what's happening globally and
01:07certainly several concerns that we have nationally,
01:09it's important for us to ensure that whoever is steering the ship has the best interests of Barbadians at heart.
01:16I'm positioning myself and my family for our best possible future. So those were the types of things that I
01:20was considering as I voted to do.
