Dr Tanya Selak talks about her role as an anesthetist at Wollongong hospitals.
Transcript
00:00So an anaesthetist is a specialist doctor and we are tasked with keeping people safe
00:06and comfortable during their operations. So it's an incredibly satisfying job where we
00:14treat patients of all ages with lots of different medical problems coming for all sorts of different
00:22things in the operating theatre. Sometimes we give people general anaesthetics so they're
00:27unconscious. Other times we do other sorts of anaesthetics like making just a part of their
00:32body numb like an arm or a leg. Veds are very complex places. We need all sorts of different
00:39team members to help a patient smoothly through their operations. So we work very closely with
00:46anaesthetic nurses who are our most incredible assistants who help us with all of the things
00:54that we need to do with our medications and our machines and we work with surgical teams,
01:00surgeons and the nursing staff. The other thing in the hospital that's often forgotten is all
01:05of the support staff that allow us to do everything. Our incredible administrative staff, our executive,
01:12our porters, our cleaners and people who are dealing with our sterile equipment. Hospitals are really complex
01:20places and we're so proud to be a part of those teams.
