Professor Deirdre McGhee from the University of Wollongong on teaching anatomy and the importance of the body donation program. Video by Adam McLean
Transcript
00:00Well I'm a professor at this university and I've been teaching anatomy since
00:051989, which gives you an idea of my age. I started teaching anatomy at the
00:11University of Sydney after doing a year-long course as anatomy as a
00:16miscellaneous subject after I graduated from physiotherapy and the year when I
00:21finished that course I was offered a job to be a tutor and I've been teaching
00:27anatomy ever since. And what is it about anatomy and teaching it to students that you love?
00:34I think it's so amazing. The human body is absolutely amazing and the more you understand it
00:42the more amazing it is and it's absolutely fundamental to understand anatomy. It's the
00:48basic science for in particularly what I teach musculoskeletal medicine. All our clinical tests
00:55which we use to diagnose musculoskeletal pathologies are all based on anatomy.
01:00So if you understand the anatomy you understand why you're doing the test and you understand then
01:06what the test means and then how to treat it. So it's the foundation science behind musculoskeletal
01:12anatomy. In the lab other academics teach all other aspects of anatomy of the human body,
01:19my aspect in particular is the musculoskeletal system. And how vital is it that you have the
01:25bodies that people have donated to be able to teach students? The students consistently say
01:34their understanding of the body doesn't come into play, doesn't click until they see the 3D human
01:41structure. So we run lectures and tutorials where we use videos or we use images, we use technology
01:49and when they get to the lab they go this is it, this is where we really understand what you're talking
01:55about because they can see the 3D structure, they can see the layers, they can see the range of shapes
02:02and sizes the body comes in and they get to see pathologies that the people who donate their bodies
02:07have had while they are alive. And will you donate your body do you think? I've donated my organs
02:14and when I get to the stage, if I get to the stage where those organs are no longer of use then yes I
02:21would donate my body.
