05:00Bye-bye.
05:29Bye-bye.
05:59Well, first of all, please let me welcome to the stage the king of reality TV.
06:05That is Mr. Producer, Carlos King.
06:08Give it up.
06:09Get up.
06:09What's up, my name is Carlos King, my name is Carlos King, the king of reality television.
06:20How's it going, my name is Carlos King, my name is Carlos King, my name is Carlos King, the king of reality television.
06:34My name is Carlos King, the king of reality television.
06:39Are y'all ready to get the tea tonight?
06:42All right, well, good.
06:43So I got the power players coming up next.
06:46So we're going to get into all of their business,
06:49because I know how y'all like it.
06:51Y'all like all the mess, all the tea, all the shade, and all the drama.
06:57So I'm going to make sure you guys get everything tonight, okay?
07:03So are y'all ready to meet the guests?
07:07All right, first up, we got entrepreneur and reality star
07:13and my friend, Yandy Smith-Harris.
07:17Ain't she fine?
07:35Honey, yeah!
07:37Give it up, Yandy!
07:41Up next, we got entertainer, reality star,
07:52and New Orleans on Queen Diva, Big Freedom!
07:57Up next!
07:59Up next!
08:03Y'all love the New Orleans natives, don't y'all?
08:07I see that.
08:19All right, so you're going to love this one now.
08:36She's one of my babies, because y'all know I love all the girls, right?
08:40Give it up for entrepreneur, author, reality star,
08:45and another New Orleans native, Toya Johnson Rushing!
08:49All right, give it up for my beautiful guest!
09:17All right, so listen, we all love reality TV,
09:24and as the king of reality television,
09:27one thing I know for sure is that you could be on a show
09:31for so many seasons, right?
09:35But oftentimes, the audience may not know who you really are.
09:41Because, child, you know, we got editing, you know what I'm saying?
09:45You may cut some scenes, you may remove some stuff, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.
09:49So this is an opportunity for your audience to get to know exactly who you are.
09:55So I want to start with Toya.
09:56Toya, what is it about reality television where you feel like,
10:02huh, I wish people knew more about me in this way?
10:06Well, with me, I am...
10:09It's kind of what you see is what you get, to be honest.
10:13But, like you say, on reality TV, you don't always get to see everything.
10:18So there is a side of me.
10:20I'm a very family-oriented person.
10:23That's no secret.
10:24I love my family.
10:26I love my kids.
10:27I go to bed for my kids.
10:28Don't play with my kids.
10:30Play about them.
10:31You know, the business side.
10:33But with me, I think my introduction to reality TV
10:37has always been family-driven.
10:39So, so many people get to see, you know,
10:42that side of my life instead of other sides of my life.
10:46It focuses mainly on kind of like the dysfunction of my life and my family
10:52versus, like, the other things that I do and that I'm doing
10:56because I guess that's more entertaining for reality TV.
11:00But, I mean, it is what it is.
11:01I'm not ashamed of it.
11:03It's who made me who I am today.
11:07I deal with it like everybody else deal with it.
11:09I'm not ashamed to share it with the world
11:11because I know that sharing my story can help others get through things
11:15that they may be going through.
11:17Amen to that.
11:18Yeah, round of applause for that, too.
11:21So, Yandy, you have been on Love & Hip Hop since, I want to say, 2000.
11:27Is it 11, 12?
11:28Well, I got on camera 2011, but I started well before 2011.
11:37I was in those production rooms banging out the concept.
11:41I was in those VH1 offices pitching and got the development deal.
11:46So, I started 2009, actually, with Love & Hip Hop.
11:50Talk to me about that transition because the thing about Yandy,
11:53Yandy was behind the scenes, music mogul, managing Jim Jones,
11:59and just working on developing artists.
12:01And then she became a reality star baby and shut it down.
12:06What was that transition like from being behind the scenes to in front of the camera
12:10where now we're all in your business, Medici's business,
12:15the kid's business, his mama, your mama child?
12:20Yes, yes, yes.
12:21Was that hard for you?
12:22You know, the hardest thing for me was transitioning as far as my look.
12:27I'm not the hair and makeup girl.
12:30If you look, if you come close, you'll see my toes ain't really done
12:33the way they're supposed to be done.
12:34So, really stepping up and trying to keep up with people that look like this
12:38was hard for me.
12:39I was used to being behind the scenes, working with Jimmy.
12:42I worked with 50.
12:43I worked with Busta.
12:44I worked with Missy.
12:45And I was ripping and running.
12:46So, even when I was in production producing the TV show, I was ripping and running.
12:51So, I was in sweats and jeans and flats all day, every day.
12:55So, when they say, we think you should be on camera.
12:58I was like, heck, no.
12:59I don't really do my hair.
13:01I don't wear makeup.
13:02So, transitioning into that was hard for me.
13:06Because I was like, ah, all this glam and hair and makeup, I don't want it.
13:10So, now having to move around with a glam team and trying to look the robe, it's hard.
13:16It's hard for me.
13:17And be killing it.
13:18But you look good, Yaddy.
13:19Don't Yaddy look good?
13:21Thank y'all.
13:22It ain't too hard, Yaddy.
13:23But I'm eyeballs.
13:24You got y'all looking all pretty and stuff.
13:26But, Frida, talk to me about your reality show because it was groundbreaking, first of its kind.
13:33So, what made you want to get into showcasing that part of your life?
13:37Well, you know, I'm from New Orleans.
13:39And so, when I got the reality show, I said that this can help, you know, my brand.
13:45But it also can help to push bounce music all around the world.
13:49So, that was my whole goal to, you know, make people aware of who I am, where I'm from, and the culture of bounce music.
13:57And using the TV show as my platform, it helped me to spread bounce music all around the world.
14:04That's great.
14:05Because the thing is this.
14:06Reality TV is a really great vehicle to promote your businesses, promote your brands, and get stuff out of there.
14:13But there's also the dark side to reality television, where people feel like they know you.
14:20You're on the blogs constantly.
14:22So, Toya, what was it like for you when it came to you doing reality?
14:26Like, what was the hardest thing that you had to cope with in your years of being in this genre?
14:32I would say the hardest thing for me is in my previous relationship when I decided to do reality TV.
14:40And I went through all of that, my breakup and everything publicly.
14:45And, you know, like, I'm human.
14:47We all are human.
14:49Everybody go through things.
14:51And it's just, mine is just showcased on a television show.
14:54It's leaving room for everybody to judge.
14:57I can't get mad about it, but sometimes people tell it.
15:00You know, when people come up to you telling you, you're dumb, you're weak, you're, like, you know, like, girl, I'm sure you have been through way worse situations.
15:08It's just that mine is broadcasting.
15:10You're dealing with telling your cousin, your mom, you know what I'm saying?
15:14So, we all make mistakes in life.
15:16We go through things.
15:17We learn from them.
15:18You know, we move on to bigger and better things.
15:21Like, it's just a part of life experiences.
15:23But when you put your life on TV, you leave room for people to judge you and call you all type of names and act like they're holier than thou.
15:32And their lives is so perfect when, in reality, we all have been through things and go through some of the same shit, to be honest.
15:41So, Yandy, for you, was it, were you ever concerned that reality television was going to put a stain on your career music?
15:51Yeah, there were several times when I felt like, you know, when things happen, if you have a fallout with a friend, that's between you and your friend.
16:00That's you and your friend business.
16:01If you go through stuff with your man, that's you and your man business.
16:05But when you put stuff on TV, and for us, as much as I would have loved to hide what I went through with my husband and not let the world end to him having to say goodbye to me, goodbye to the kids.
16:17You know, the world had to go on that journey with me because for the next four and a half years, you were going to see me raising two babies by myself.
16:26So, as much as I wanted to keep it secret and not show the world what was happening, that was my real life.
16:32That was the real thing I was going through, and many days, many nights, I was like, okay, people are going to think this is because of that, or, you know, my success came from this.
16:43And I worked hard, and I've grinded my way up in this industry, and I didn't want that what he was going through to take away from what I've built.
16:52And naturally, people are going to assume, naturally, people are going to feel like, oh, you must be a part of this, or this must be something.
16:58And you have to debunk all these rumors all the time, and then it gets to a point where you're just sick of it, and you're just like, I don't got it in me no more.
17:07What you think about me is what shall be in your brain, and I just have to deal with it because you get tired.
17:14You get tired of constantly feeling like I got to prove myself.
17:17I got to prove myself.
17:18And me, I'm constantly creating businesses, constantly trying to hire people.
17:22And I'm like, I don't got the time to fight with all the comments and the rumors.
17:26I got to get this one a job.
17:28I got to make sure this business stays open.
17:30I got to make sure this is successful.
17:32So it got to the point where I was just like, judge me if you may, but get to know me if you may as well, and you'll see a different side of what you think.
17:41Love that.
17:42So, Frida, was your experience the same?
17:44Because your show was really just all about you.
17:47So did you have a different experience, unlike the rest of the ladies on the stage who were part of an ensemble show at one point?
17:55Well, I mean, my relationship was different with the show as well as just being able to show my partner and the things that we went through.
18:04You know, we had some ups and downs throughout the TV show, no doubt.
18:09From starting with season one, I was just a baby.
18:12I didn't know anything about TV, and just, like, opening myself up and opening my family up to, like, for the world to see, it was such a big change for me.
18:22But as season two came and season three, and as they kept on going and going, I would get better each season and say, this is how I need to put this in perspective.
18:31This is how I need to put this out.
18:33You know, like, I want to make sure that I protect my brand, protect my family, protect my cast members that's on the show, because at the end of the day, it represents my name and who I am.
18:45Now, we see that, obviously, the world is evolving, and when the world evolves, that means every genre in this business evolves, too.
18:53Where do you see the future of reality TV going?
18:56You know, do you think people want to see more entrepreneurship stuff?
19:01Do they want to see more daddy stuff?
19:05Do they want to, like, what do you guys think the audience wants to see?
19:09I'll start with you, Toya.
19:11I, what I would want is more entrepreneur stuff and more positive stuff, but unfortunately, we live in a time where people are so attracted to negativity.
19:22It's like the fighting, the rah-rah, it's like that is more entertaining.
19:27If you produce a show that's based on building women up, hustling, teaching women how to get to the bag, showing us that we're better, it's better to collaborate than to compete.
19:40Like, real boss-type stuff, that's considered boring.
19:44That don't get the ratings that the rah-rah shows get.
19:47So that, you know, we have to change that narrative as well.
19:51We have to tune in and push, you know, support those shows that's more on the girlfriends, building each other up as sisters, black women, standing by each other and supporting more positive things.
20:04And those are the type of shows that we will see on television.
20:07But if you're not tuning in and they're not making the money, those type of shows won't get to see the light.
20:13So you're going to get the baddies and the pulling hairs and the, you know, crazy rah-rah shows.
20:19Nothing against those shows to each his own, but I am team building my sisters up.
20:25Black power, like, those type of shows.
20:28So I would like to see that.
20:30Yes, absolutely.
20:32I completely agree with my sister.
20:34I mean, just thinking about our real life, we would have had a reality show.
20:38We go on vacations together.
20:40We hang out.
20:40We cut up.
20:41We have a ball.
20:42And then even when I met Big Frida, Big Frida came to my hotel room where her whole crew performed and went crazy, bought me some food and everything.
20:51Remember that?
20:52That had to be like 15 years ago.
20:54There is fun stuff in reality, real reality.
20:57It's not always about beef and it's not always about what this one did and who this one slept with.
21:03Like, there's real joy in sisterhood.
21:06There's real entertainment in seeing us.
21:09This one came to my room.
21:11I was from New York in Harlem.
21:13I hadn't heard of Big Frida.
21:14When I tell you I have been a diehard fan, if y'all had cameras in my hotel room, you came with like 10 people.
21:22We had a whole big meme in D.C.
21:24The whole crew was like, what's going on?
21:26And we fell in love.
21:28But those are the kind of things, if you guys supported, we're so quick to say, oh, that is the degradation of black people.
21:35That is the downfall of black women.
21:37The problem that we're having is we don't build it up.
21:42These shows go off ratings.
21:43These shows go off of who's tuning in, who's clicking, where are people liking, tapping, what's trending.
21:51We can control that.
21:53You guys have to get out there and fight for the shows you want to see.
21:56You can't let all the shows you don't want to see win.
21:59You got to really get out there and fight for it.
22:01And when you feel like it's trash, when you feel like this is doing this, speak up.
22:06Speak up.
22:07And then the way you also speak up is by supporting the shows that you want to see.
22:11Carlos has an amazing show right now with some amazing women in Atlanta.
22:16They're killing it.
22:17And you guys can support those shows without making sure that these shows get the numbers, but more shows like this get the numbers.
22:25We need to make sure we use our power, which is the remote control, to dictate what really has value and what is valuable to these networks.
22:36Because you actually control that.
22:38The more these shows that you see that you don't look, you like, it's because you've controlled that.
22:43So just keep in mind, we can complain with our mouths, but we can show real power with our spending by using the remote.
22:51Yes.
22:52Amen to that.
22:52Go ahead, Frida.
22:53What you got to say about closing it out?
22:55Well, for me, y'all get to see the new season of Big Frida Means Business, season two.
23:03And I'm just so grateful to be able to have my own TV show and to be in full control creatively.
23:11And to get to really show the real, true, authentic me.
23:15And to allow me to showcase my friends and my family and my team.
23:20And I think we have a clip today.
23:21Y'all want to see a clip of the new show?
23:23Let's show a clip to close us out.
23:25It also leads me to, I'm dropping a new gospel album on next year.
23:30Woo!
23:31You better.
23:33Lift it, do it, do it.
23:35Do it, do it.
23:36Do we have the clip that we can show?
23:41So listen, while I was on stage, the spirit talked to me.
23:46And my next project, I know what I want it to be.
23:48It will be a gospel album.
23:50I'm taking it back to the roof.
23:51I'm going back to the gospel.
23:53Gospel.
23:54I'm not sure if I really want Frida to do this.
23:58I'm taking it back to the roof.
24:00I'm going back to the gospel.
24:02Gospel album?
24:03Really?
24:04I know we grew up in church, but I'm not sure if the world is ready for that.
24:10Hallelujah, salvation, and glory.
24:12Hallelujah!
24:13Hallelujah!
24:14Hallelujah!
24:14Hallelujah!
24:15Hallelujah!
24:16Hallelujah!
24:16Hallelujah!
24:17Hallelujah!
24:18Hallelujah!
24:19Hallelujah!
24:20Hallelujah!
24:21Give it up!
24:23Give it up!
24:23All right, all right.
24:24So like Yandy said, listen, listen, as the king of reality television, the only way we're
24:30able to continue to build more black shows with black producers and black production companies
24:35is if you guys invest in us the way we're investing you, it works both ways, okay?
24:42The power of the remote control is real.
24:44Toya has her season two of Toya and Regine coming out on Wee TV early 2025.
24:51Yes!
24:51Yes!
24:52You can always buy Yandy, everything she's doing, love and hip hop, I mean, she's been on the
24:55show, New York, Atlanta, and she has a bunch of other things going on, scripted, other businesses,
25:02candles, skincare, and I got them in my crib and it smells good.
25:06And y'all just saw a big Frida's clip, so support these beautiful people on the stage.
25:13I wish I had more time with you guys, but thank you guys so much.
25:17Give it up for this beautiful representation of reality.
25:21I already know.
25:23Yeah!
25:24Girl, girl.
25:25Give it up for Carla!
25:30Thank you, New Orleans!
