Transcript
00:00Birmingham on a good day and there's no better day
00:29than when Giants Live is in town with the Strongman Open featuring the World Deadlift Championship
00:34and when one very special athlete is making his return.
00:42I miss the sport.
00:46If I would not come back,
00:49I might regret it for the rest of my life.
00:59I don't want to live with regrets, you know.
01:03I want to live my life to the fullest.
01:06I love being the best.
01:18You know, that's inspiring me to keep going
01:21and I want to prove to the people, to the world
01:23that, you know, I can come back after such a long time
01:26and still be one of the best guys out there.
01:31You know, I have won everything there is to win in Strongman
01:35and, you know, I realized
01:37the World Records are something that's going to live there forever
01:41until they're broken
01:43and people are going to remember those World Records,
01:47these big moments.
01:50I am very confident in my ability
01:52to break my own death world record
01:54and pull 510 kilograms
01:56and that's what I'm going to do.
01:57But, the goal is not done there.
02:05I'm here also to win the whole show
02:07so I have five more events left
02:09after the deadlift
02:10and I'll be fully satisfied
02:12if I win the whole show
02:15and I truly believe I can.
02:16What a time to be a Strongman fan.
02:30Hap Thor Julius Bjornsson
02:32looking preposterously enormous.
02:35That isn't the world record.
02:37The question is, in a few moments' time
02:39will he manage to pull 510 kilograms?
02:42The lads here, they're getting ready to go outside there.
02:44So much to talk about.
02:45Matt Rag in the back, can he break a national record?
02:48Gavin Bilton as well.
02:49And what about the man
02:50holding a t-shirt from Mexico?
02:52Raul, so much that we don't know about him
02:55but we do know one thing.
02:57He's going to give this absolutely everything
02:59and fingers crossed,
03:01history once again will be made at Giants Live.
03:04It's time to meet the athletes.
03:07Hey!
03:08Hey!
03:12Well, thanks, Radzie.
03:13And yes, let's begin.
03:15Let's meet our athletes.
03:19Well, we saw him a few moments ago
03:20here for the deadlift only from Mexico.
03:23Pulled 480 kilos recently
03:25for a new American record.
03:26It's Flores
03:27representing America.
03:30Six foot six in his socks
03:32or out of them.
03:33Former NFL player with the Dallas Cowboys, Bryce Johnson.
03:36From Canada, Tristan Horrath.
03:41He's a police officer from Edmonton.
03:43Came fifth at World Strongest last year.
03:45Here's a friendly fella from Australia.
03:48Two-time Australia's strongest man.
03:50The singing strongman, Eddie Williams.
03:56This guy made the World Strongest Man Grand Final last year.
03:59Another athlete from Mexico.
04:01They call him Smash.
04:01It's Austin Andrade.
04:03It's Austin Andrade.
04:06A real veteran now.
04:0843 years old.
04:09Competing in deadlift only tonight.
04:12It is Rauno Heinle.
04:14Six-time New Zealand's strongest man.
04:21Placed fourth at the World Strongest Man Grand Final last year.
04:24It is the Kiwi, Matt Rack.
04:28Then always a fan favorite.
04:31Two-time Britain's strongest man.
04:32Runner-up, Gavin Bilton.
04:39Another stalwart of the British scene.
04:42A member of the prestigious £1,000 club.
04:46It's Adam Bishop.
04:47That's what he can lift, not what he weighs.
04:54Yet another familiar face.
04:56Two-time Europe's strongest man.
04:59Reigning Britain's strongest man.
05:01His shoulders arguably the strongest on the planet.
05:03It's Luke Stoltman.
05:08Now this man's star is rising.
05:11And rising fast, 2025's England's strongest man, Paddy Haynes.
05:18From the USA, the always intense, always elegant T-Rex.
05:24Won the Strongman Classic in London.
05:26It's Evan Singleton.
05:29No!
05:30And look who's back.
05:37Returning to Giants Live for the first time since 2019.
05:40All six-foot-nine of Hafthor.
05:45Julius Bjornsson.
05:47Five-time Europe's strongest man.
05:492018 world's strongest man.
05:52What can he do tonight?
05:53So there you go.
05:57I hope that's all right for you.
06:01As we move into the deadlift, Colin Bryce.
06:04Yes, indeed.
06:05This is max deadlift.
06:06We start at 400 kilos.
06:08Who knows where we finish?
06:09The world record, 505 kilos.
06:11He's held by Hafthor Julius Bjornsson.
06:14This is what's happened so far.
06:15Round two.
06:16The men at 420 kilos.
06:18All of them going clear.
06:20Except Luke Stoltman down the bottom there.
06:22Bjornsson and Singleton still to come.
06:27Well, it's going to be Hafthor.
06:30Julius Bjornsson.
06:31Bjornsson, the mountain, up against America's Adam Singleton.
06:39Well, I thought perhaps one of them would pass this because you're allowed to pass, but
06:43getting the lift in, 420 kilos.
06:48I mean, Bjornsson, it's not that long ago, less than a month since he's broken the world record.
06:54Singleton doesn't wait around.
06:56There's two platforms going at the moment.
06:58No, Magnus Fair Magnussen says you didn't hold it at the top.
07:03And that's not good.
07:05Well, something's happened here with Singleton.
07:09Bjornsson makes it look like nothing.
07:11Absolutely nothing.
07:14He definitely didn't hold it long enough, Singleton.
07:16He's going to give it another go.
07:20His personal best, 1,000 pounds, 453 kilos.
07:23This should be pretty easy, but something has gone wrong.
07:26You can see that.
07:28Yes.
07:29Something around the left knee.
07:34Well, we'll keep you up to date with Singleton.
07:36He's got to be one of the favorites for tonight's show, along with Bjornsson, of course.
07:40And even this man, Paddy Haynes, he is a great deadlifter.
07:45Let's take another look at what Singleton did there.
07:47He didn't lock his hips out.
07:49Didn't get his hips through.
07:50He thought he got the down signal.
07:52Hence the rather unhappy look.
07:57Hey, keep Britton tidy.
07:59Some frustration from Singleton.
08:04No kidding.
08:05But no excuse for littering.
08:06No, there's never an excuse.
08:08You're right there, Danny.
08:09No.
08:10I'm glad you said it, not me, though.
08:11Here we go.
08:13Our first pair up at 440.
08:15Big Gav Bilton.
08:17Strapping on.
08:18Paddy Haynes on the other side.
08:20Ready to pull and he can go in every once.
08:25Well, Paddy Haynes continues.
08:30An amazing run he's been having of late.
08:32Oh, this will be something else as well.
08:34If Big Gav got it.
08:36And he does.
08:38That's a Welsh record there.
08:41For Big Gav Bilton.
08:42Tremendous lifting.
08:44He's pretty happy too.
08:47Mettering his own record by 15 kilograms.
08:50Well done, Gav.
08:51He's absolutely delighted.
08:56Gavin Bilton.
08:58Welsh deadlift record.
09:00How was that for you, mate?
09:02Oh, it was easy.
09:03I could do it again if I wanted to.
09:04I trained hard.
09:06This is a game of nutrition.
09:08Of course, I won £1,000.
09:10440 is a great number.
09:11I bow out.
09:12Let's go and win the rest of the show.
09:14And just very quickly, those are the facts.
09:16What does that mean to you?
09:17It means a lot.
09:20Like I said, I almost gave this up a couple of weeks ago.
09:23So, yeah, I'm happy to be here.
09:25It means a lot.
09:25It's not just a number on a buy.
09:26It means a lot.
09:28We saw it, mate.
09:28Massive congratulations.
09:29Show ahead.
09:30Thank you very much, Horsa.
09:33We move on to 453 kilos.
09:37And it's Paddy Haynes.
09:40Yes, 453.
09:41An unusual number, but it converts to £1,000.
09:45So these men trying to join the £1,000 club.
09:51Paddy Haynes on the left.
09:53Looking solid.
09:53He's great at reps.
09:57Could he do this for his max lift?
09:59Yes, he can.
10:00Well, Paddy Haynes, he's in that £1,000 club.
10:04He's looking for his certificate and his membership card now.
10:07But this is huge.
10:08But this is huge.
10:10Unbelievable.
10:11He's such a talent.
10:13He's had an incredible year, Paddy Haynes.
10:15Bryce Johnson on the far side.
10:17Just got it to his shins and no more.
10:19But after a couple of pulls, it wasn't perfectly clean.
10:23He managed to get it up.
10:24£1,000.
10:25Paddy Haynes, you came here for a PB.
10:28You're leaving with £1,000.
10:31Mate, unbelievable.
10:33I'm absolutely lost for words, Radz.
10:35I'm surprised myself there.
10:36Like, that's a 45 kilo PB in less than a year.
10:42I don't care what happens now.
10:44Do you know what I mean?
10:45It's a lifetime goal ticked off.
10:47And I know there's more coming as well.
10:49It's coming on, man.
10:50I'm not the guy that can move anymore.
10:52I'm sort of becoming this rounded athlete,
10:54quite literally at the minute.
10:55But it's paid off and I couldn't be happier.
10:58Game on for the show.
10:59Game on, boys.
11:01Mass moves mass as ever.
11:03For plenty of deadlift drama to come in Birmingham
11:06as we close in on that world record attempt in the deadlift.
11:10Will you know who?
11:11On Giants Live.
11:14Well, welcome back to Birmingham
11:29and the World Deadlift Championship.
11:31Well, we're going into round number five
11:33and all of the men in the red are out of the competition.
11:37Rag failed for 70 kilos, which is round five.
11:40Flores and Heinle have skipped.
11:42So we have Bishop and Bjornsson still to come.
11:45Only one man has attempted and made it.
11:48Yes, Austin Andrade was successful at 470.
11:52After a little lie down, decided to call it a day.
11:54So two men to come, Bishop and Bjornsson.
12:02We haven't seen Bjornsson since 420 kilos.
12:05Bishop, of course, pulled the 1,000 pounds.
12:08So this isn't a huge jump for him,
12:10but it is a very big jump for Bjornsson.
12:13We're down to just one platform now.
12:16Well, this would be a great moment for Adam Bishop.
12:22This would be his personal best.
12:26This Bishop, he's lifted this kind of weight
12:28on numerous occasions coming into the world deadlift champs,
12:32but he's often gambled too high.
12:34So he's going to try and consolidate.
12:35Get the 470.
12:36He's done it.
12:37Surely.
12:38And it seemed pretty easy.
12:41There could be more.
12:44There could be more.
12:46Great lift from Adam Bishop.
12:48Just the last couple of inches,
12:50he struggled, sunk his hips,
12:51drove it through.
12:53Well, he's with his old university mate Radzi now.
12:58Come on.
13:03Adam Bishop.
13:04Yeah.
13:04I recall being in Loughborough,
13:06you pulling 300 kilos off the floor
13:08and that was really impressive.
13:10Mate, you've put 170 kilos on that
13:12and made it look smooth.
13:14How was it for you?
13:15I'm also about 50 kilos every in body weight
13:17since those days.
13:17I'd hope so, but it felt really good.
13:19That was the plan going in.
13:20I wanted that 470 pull.
13:22Improvement on where I was, you know, in 2021.
13:24And it moved well, so yeah, I'm very happy.
13:26In all seriousness,
13:27the last time I spoke to you,
13:29things were very, very different.
13:30Yeah.
13:30Look at you now.
13:32Exactly.
13:32But, you know, the power of just having me
13:33a little bit more time
13:34so I can get prepared and ready to go
13:36and yeah, it's, everything's changed.
13:38And just a word for your journey.
13:40So, you've tried to deadlift before,
13:42ruptured bicep, ruptured tricep,
13:44ruptured Achilles
13:45and here we are in the 475.
13:47It's actually unbelievable, mate.
13:48Yeah, man, I'm very happy.
13:49Obviously, you know,
13:50these things can knock you down,
13:51but you can't let them keep you down.
13:53And that's, you know,
13:53the thing I kind of live to
13:54is always focus on what I can do
13:56and obviously for a while
13:57I couldn't walk around,
13:59but I can still train.
14:00And obviously I'm wanting to get back
14:01and pull something big
14:02and that's what I've done.
14:02Thanks for your time, mate.
14:07Well, amazing work from Adam Bishop.
14:10But now all thoughts turn to this man,
14:13half-gore Julius Bjornsson.
14:16Well, if we're going to get
14:17510 kilos up today,
14:19that's a 40 kilo jump from this.
14:21So you'd hope this isn't
14:23too difficult for Bjornsson.
14:26We'll read a lot
14:27into how this goes up.
14:29Good Lord.
14:33Oh, not bad.
14:35Wow.
14:36Not bad at all.
14:38He's the only man
14:39that dwarfs this equipment.
14:41Yes, he does, isn't it?
14:43That is a standard bar
14:44you would see
14:45in any competition.
14:46My goodness me,
14:47there was no hits,
14:48nothing.
14:48In fact,
14:50there wasn't even a scream
14:51or a roar.
14:52That was just
14:53another day at the office.
14:56We are
14:56surely going for the world record now.
14:59Let's have a look.
15:00470 kilos.
15:02Both Bjornsson and Bishop
15:03and Andrade
15:04all making that.
15:05Flores and Heinle,
15:06of course,
15:06have skipped.
15:08And we go to 480 kilos now
15:10where Bjornsson
15:11is skipping.
15:13So,
15:14two men
15:14going for 480
15:15and it'll be
15:16the Mexican Flores,
15:18the new
15:18All-American record holder.
15:21Well,
15:22he did 475 kilos.
15:23So this will be
15:24five kilos up
15:25on his own
15:25All-America's record.
15:27So Flores
15:30and Heinle
15:32next to go
15:33but Flores first.
15:40Doesn't roll it in
15:41which is unusual
15:42but
15:43gives it a good hit.
15:45He's got very long arms
15:46for his size
15:46that's for sure
15:47but doesn't quite get it.
15:49To be fair,
15:49it was only
15:50a matter of a couple of weeks ago
15:52he did that record.
15:53He's been flown in
15:54at the last minute
15:55and
15:55given it his best.
15:57Still have
16:00Heinle though.
16:02And of course
16:03if Bjornsson
16:04were to go for the record
16:04and fail
16:05and Heinle
16:06would have pull this
16:07he'd win the competition.
16:09So much riding on this.
16:12It's all to play for
16:13for Rhyno
16:15Heinle.
16:19Looks good off the floor
16:20but he's stuck
16:21at the knees.
16:22That took it out of him
16:26and I don't think
16:27we'll get much more
16:27out of Heinle.
16:29We've seen Heinle too
16:31and I like his spangly shoes
16:32by the way.
16:33I made those.
16:33well he's been there
16:37before in this territory
16:38he's been the
16:39Masters world record holder
16:41for some time now
16:42so it all comes down
16:44to one big lift
16:44and I'm assuming
16:46we're going to go
16:46for 5'10 here
16:47505 kilos
16:49done in Germany
16:50about a month ago
16:52and
16:53yes
16:54indeed
16:55oh my goodness
16:56to a world record attempt
16:58for the mountain himself
17:02after Julius Bjornsson
17:05back after six years
17:07yes indeed
17:09he's been
17:09boxing
17:11he's been doing
17:11all kinds of different things
17:13and now he's getting
17:14very very strong
17:15again
17:16ping pong
17:16all of them
17:18you name it
17:19he can do it
17:19but the lure of the deadlift
17:21was too great
17:22well arguably
17:24the number one lift
17:26in all of strongman
17:27all of strength sports
17:28right here
17:29the deadlift
17:31the king of lifts
17:32and his chance now
17:34just to
17:35take another
17:365 kilos away
17:37from the rest of the world
17:39510 kilograms
17:42on the bar
17:44that's over
17:451122 pounds
17:48feels like he's just supposed to do this
17:53he turns up
17:55determined
17:55that's when he's unstoppable
17:58can he do 5'10
18:01oh my goodness
18:04oh yes he can
18:05that was so easy
18:06Danny
18:06rolled it in
18:08not a single hitch there
18:10nothing
18:10that just flew up
18:12how much more is there
18:14well that is
18:15a new world record
18:17for Iceland's Bjornsson
18:19well he's taken
18:21the $100,000 check
18:23as well
18:23which is worth
18:24roaring about
18:25extraordinary
18:26I don't want to go for that
18:27you don't know
18:31who his dad is
18:32he's the very tall one
18:33there
18:33Bjorn
18:34very tall man indeed
18:36great guy
18:37and
18:37congratulations
18:39Hafthor
18:39510 kilos
18:41it's now
18:42out of sight
18:43from the rest of the world
18:44and
18:44if anyone chased him
18:45there's more
18:46well Hafthor
18:50Julius Bjornsson
18:51takes that world record
18:52and he's with Radzi
18:54right now
18:55Hafthor
18:57history has been made
18:59and you made it look
19:00extremely easy
19:01how was it from your end
19:02it felt extremely good
19:04you know
19:05I think with the crowd here
19:06dude in this arena
19:09helped a lot
19:10I fit off the crowd
19:12I get more energy
19:14from the crowd
19:14I love the crowd
19:15so
19:16and I came in strong
19:19I've been training
19:19really hard for this
19:21and
19:21things have gone well
19:23in training
19:24and
19:24I'm the strongest
19:26I've ever been
19:26so I'm really
19:27really happy
19:27and to do it in front
19:28of your family as well
19:30it means everything
19:31you know
19:31having them here
19:32hearing my son
19:34cheering me on
19:35means everything
19:36and
19:37just finally
19:38where does that put
19:39in the annals
19:40of your greatness
19:41all the things you've achieved
19:42you've won everything
19:43where does that stand
19:44this has to be like
19:46out there
19:47you know
19:47like
19:48people love world records
19:49I love world records
19:50but also love titles
19:52you know
19:52I've won everything
19:53I used to win
19:54in strongman
19:55when I was active
19:56you know
19:56and
19:58you know
19:59this has to be
20:00up there
20:01with all
20:02all of my
20:02big accomplishments
20:03just to say
20:05as a strongman fan
20:06as a fan of strength
20:07to witness greatness
20:08like that
20:09it was a privilege
20:09so Hapful thank you
20:10thank you so much
20:11thank you
20:11the mighty Thor
20:14after so long away
20:15from the sport
20:15setting a mighty new world record
20:17and sending a warning
20:19to the rest of strongman
20:20joint second behind him
20:21Bishop and Andrade
20:22with what in any other context
20:24would surely be winning lifts
20:25on to the next event
20:27well thanks James
20:28yes the farmers walk up next
20:30a 150 kilo weight
20:32in each hand
20:33like lifting a sumo wrestler
20:35in each hand
20:36and then having a jog
20:37yes for 30 meters
20:39as well
20:39and it's been done
20:40by Luke Stoltman
20:4114 seconds
20:42he completed it in
20:43Tristan Howarth
20:440.8 of a second
20:46behind him
20:46and Evan Singleton
20:47I'm afraid
20:48is out
20:49he's withdrawn
20:49so up next
20:51Eddie Williams
20:52and Gavin Bilton
20:54chasing down
20:56that Stoltman lead
20:57and they're off
20:58this is a very fast start
21:00from Eddie Williams
21:01look at him go
21:01wow
21:02absolutely flying down
21:04the course
21:05he's going to be done
21:06any second here
21:06he's going to go ahead
21:07of Stoltman
21:08surely
21:08yes he has
21:09well that's very very fast
21:11indeed
21:12from Australia's Williams
21:13Gavin Bilton
21:14though struggling
21:15once you've
21:16let them drop
21:17very hard to get going
21:18again
21:18no doubt exhausted
21:20from pulling that
21:21Welsh record
21:21440 kilos earlier
21:23he's digging in deep
21:24though he's almost
21:25to the line
21:26come on Gab
21:28you can do it
21:28oh
21:29a little bounce
21:30will he get away with it
21:31I think he does
21:32well
21:3332.69
21:34for Gavin Bilton
21:35what about this
21:37from
21:38Eddie Williams
21:39tremendous
21:40extraordinary
21:41he's just about
21:43as fast laden
21:43as unladen
21:44amazing
21:45we move on then
21:47Bryce Johnson
21:48from America
21:49Britain's Paddy Haynes
21:50and Matt Rag
21:51the Kiwi
21:52yes the big
21:55Bryce Johnson
21:56on the far side
21:57Paddy Haynes
21:58who's a tremendous
21:59athlete in the center
22:00but it's Johnson
22:01the American
22:01who had great power
22:03off the floor
22:04but he's gone down
22:04and now is the turn
22:06of the Kiwi
22:06can he get to the line
22:08first
22:08well it's the tortoise
22:09in the hair
22:10isn't it
22:1014.3
22:12for Matt Rag
22:13wow
22:14Paddy Haynes
22:15slower and steadier
22:17in the middle
22:1718.27
22:18bit of a shock
22:21there
22:21I thought Paddy Haynes
22:21was going to storm through
22:22on that one
22:23he's got such a good grip
22:24but
22:24those who lifted
22:26really heavy
22:27in the deadlift
22:27seem to just be
22:29hampered a bit here
22:30does that mean
22:31Bjornsson's going to be
22:32very slow
22:32we'll find out
22:33I guess
22:34great stuff from Rag
22:36a little slower
22:37than Stoltman
22:37and Eddie Williams
22:38still holds the lead
22:39Andrade
22:42Bishop
22:43and Bjornsson
22:45now
22:46yes
22:48it's out for Bjornsson
22:49closest to camera
22:50how much is he
22:52given away
22:52in the deadlift
22:53Adam Bishop
22:54looking really good
22:55does Bjornsson
22:57have a second gear
22:58here to try
22:58and catch him
22:59oh
23:00it doesn't have to
23:01he's gone down
23:02Bishop
23:02well
23:04Bjornsson
23:0515.58
23:06the only man
23:08to just keep
23:08hanging on
23:09disappointing for
23:11Bishop there
23:11coming in last
23:1219.97
23:13yeah
23:14and Olsen Andrade
23:15he was close as well
23:16but he too went down
23:17so just 18.21 seconds
23:19for the Mexican
23:20slow and steady
23:23was
23:24the order there
23:25for Bjornsson
23:26and that grip
23:27didn't give up
23:28that gave him the win
23:29in this heat
23:30so the man
23:36from down under
23:37doing a number
23:37on the rest of the field
23:38in event two
23:39Eddie Williams
23:40the clear winner
23:41so close
23:42between Luke Stoltman
23:43in second though
23:43and fifth place
23:44Bryce Johnson
23:45have Thor
23:46coming in sixth
23:47and that means
23:48overall
23:49Thor's lead
23:50has narrowed
23:51to just half a point
23:52now from Matt Ragg
23:53close behind
23:54the Kiwi
23:54Austin Andrade
23:55and Eddie Williams
23:56Bishop
23:57Haynes and Stoltman
23:58all needing
23:59to make up ground
24:00it's been a remarkable
24:03evening so far
24:04for the mountain
24:05that world record
24:06and now
24:06sitting on top
24:07of his first
24:08giant slide back
24:09after six years
24:10the rest of the field
24:11with a mountain
24:12to climb
24:13when we return
24:14welcome back to Birmingham
24:27if you're just joining us
24:28Thor is back
24:30and looking like
24:30he'd never been away
24:31the big man
24:32setting a deadlift
24:33world record
24:34earlier tonight
24:34and currently leading
24:35in the strongman open
24:37can his rivals
24:38close the gap
24:39in our next event
24:39let's find out
24:40with Colin and Danny
24:41well thanks James
24:44and yes
24:44the sandbag
24:45steeplechase Colin
24:46yes
24:47two 150kg sacks
24:49that's at 330 pounds
24:52in the hands
24:52has to be taken
24:53down the course
24:54and this is what's
24:55happened so far
24:56Matt Ragg
24:57managed to finish
24:57all four runs
24:59two runs
25:00in each shuttle
25:01as it were
25:0142 seconds
25:02is the time to beat
25:04well
25:05Bilton
25:05Haynes
25:06and Andrade
25:06are next
25:07and it's not just
25:09a case of
25:09lifting
25:10carrying these bags
25:11he's gonna chuck them
25:12over that hurdle
25:13as well
25:14yes it's broken down
25:16into four segments
25:17two for each sack
25:18and Paddy Haynes
25:19over the first segment
25:21the further you can
25:22throw it
25:22the better of course
25:23for the second part
25:24of it
25:24this is very very
25:26fast from Paddy Haynes
25:28he sold this event
25:30at Britain's
25:30strongest man
25:31so he knows
25:31what it's like
25:32it's hard
25:33that is the answer
25:34nearly slipping there
25:35in his pimpses
25:35this is very rare
25:37you see a strong man
25:38moving as quickly
25:38as Haynes
25:39sprinting back
25:40but it's worthwhile
25:41he is just a
25:43ferocious athlete
25:44he really is
25:4542 seconds
25:46is the time to beat
25:4742 and a half
25:48keep your eyes
25:48on the clock
25:49Paddy Haynes
25:50I think is gonna do it
25:51and does it
25:52with style
25:53Paddy Haynes
25:5438.94 seconds
25:56it's Gavin Bilton
25:59next to complete
26:01good fitness there
26:04for a man
26:05who's well over
26:06400 pounds
26:07that's not bad
26:07at all
26:08now change of
26:10technique
26:10over here
26:11for Andrade
26:12doesn't look like
26:16he's having fun
26:16now I'm not sure
26:18it's the best technique
26:19he's starting to run
26:20out of time
26:21and energy
26:22yeah energy
26:23is virtually
26:24on zero here
26:25I think he might
26:26just give this
26:27a little cuddle
26:27and that'll be time up
26:28I've never seen
26:30a more fed up
26:31looking strongman
26:32he'd had enough of me
26:34he's just such a
26:35big man
26:36of course
26:36all of these men
26:37bulking up
26:38for the deadlift
26:39but Paddy Haynes
26:40such an athlete
26:41certainly hampered
26:43him the least
26:44as that was
26:45a tremendous time
26:47Bjornsson
26:50Johnson
26:51and from Canada
26:53Hoeth
26:53so referee
26:56Darren Sadler
26:57gets us underway
26:58Hoeth closest to camera
26:59he's the lightest
27:00you'd expect him
27:01to probably be
27:01the quickest at this
27:02the cop
27:03but Bryce Johnson
27:05at 6 foot 6
27:06and Hafthor at 6 foot 9
27:07they certainly
27:08don't find the hurdles
27:09too difficult
27:09just the
27:12the size
27:15of Hafthor
27:16and that big stride
27:18of his
27:18just chews the ground up
27:20and he's looking
27:20very fit for a man
27:21who's weighing in
27:23at around 200 kilograms
27:24in body weight
27:25440 pounds
27:27now will he gas out
27:29here on this second sack
27:30it must be nice
27:32releasing that sandbag
27:34but then realizing
27:35you have to pick it up again
27:36not so good
27:37don't think he's gonna beat
27:38Paddy Haynes
27:39in fact he's gone behind that
27:40but still it looks very solid
27:42indeed for Bjornsson
27:43this will get him good points
27:45yes solid's the word there
27:4647 and a quarter
27:48for Hafthor Bjornsson
27:50neck and neck here
27:51Canada
27:52race to the finish
27:52Canada just ahead of America
27:55Howard nicked it
27:5756.81
27:58versus 57.76
28:00for Bryce Johnson
28:02I'm not sure that's a face of pleasure
28:07but he's digging in
28:09he's a fighter Bjornsson
28:10perhaps Thor making top Thor
28:15in event three
28:15but is time beaten
28:16by his rival Matt Ragd
28:18by Luke Stoltman
28:19and above all
28:20by the winner
28:20of this event
28:21Paddy Haynes
28:22Radzi's with him now
28:23Paddy Haynes
28:25you're probably mixing it
28:26with the big boys here
28:27he's one of the strongest men
28:27on planet earth
28:28and you are top three now
28:29yes absolutely crazy
28:31I've got two damage
28:32limitation events
28:32that's all
28:33these front hold
28:34I've never done
28:35in competition
28:36I've never done
28:36the Viking press either
28:37so for me
28:39like today
28:39it's just a case of
28:40get out there
28:40do the best I can
28:41have some fun
28:42try some new events out
28:43and power stairs
28:44are usually quite loyal
28:45at the end
28:46so hopefully finish
28:46on a high
28:47and just finally
28:48we talk about
28:49secret weapons
28:50when it comes to nutrition
28:51people might have
28:52isotonic drinks
28:53they might think about
28:54rice or chicken or broccoli
28:55what have you been having
28:56I've just munched
28:57my second jam sandwich
28:59and I have no regrets
29:00jam sandwich for the win
29:02so well done
29:02honestly I'm like
29:03Paddington Bear on holiday
29:04I'll just keep it super simple
29:05unpack the jam
29:07Paddy into third
29:08after that event win
29:09we'll see if he can
29:10preserve that podium place
29:11Thor slips into second
29:13Matt Ragg
29:14takes over on top
29:15coming up
29:16it's hammer time
29:17well thanks James
29:19and yes the hammer hold
29:20is next
29:2130 kilos this hammer
29:22how long can you hold it out
29:24in front of you
29:2466 pounds
29:26and well Eddie Hall
29:27has the world record
29:28of 65 seconds
29:29and this is what's happened
29:30so far
29:31Tristan Hoeth
29:32has done the longest
29:3339.56 seconds
29:35but the man
29:35in second there
29:36Ragg from New Zealand
29:3839.12
29:39he leads the competition
29:41and then once again
29:43putting in a very
29:44steady performance
29:45two pairs to come
29:47so the first pair
29:50Hafthor Bjornsson
29:51of Iceland
29:52and Britain's
29:53Luke Stoltman
29:54as you said earlier
29:58Luke Stoltman
29:58arguably the strongest
30:00shoulders in the world
30:01but
30:01don't tell Hafthor Bjornsson
30:03he'll make him mad
30:04because he can just about
30:05do anything
30:06he really shouldn't be good
30:07at this Bjornsson
30:08he's got long long arms
30:09and that works against you
30:11in biomechanics
30:12but he's dug in hard
30:14oh a little shake already
30:16at 15 seconds
30:17this will be interesting
30:17well 39.56
30:19to beat
30:20and now Luke Stoltman
30:21trying to find his happy place
30:23very difficult to find
30:24a happy place
30:25when you're holding
30:26a hammer this heavy
30:26this really is
30:30mind over matter
30:31and it looks like
30:32the matter is winning
30:33against Stoltman
30:3437.38
30:35oh he goes
30:36just before
30:37Hoeth
30:37but what a fight
30:39there from Luke Stoltman
30:40as Hafthor Bjornsson
30:41continues
30:43and he's got the lead
30:45that's for sure
30:45by some margin now
30:47is he gonna make a minute
30:48not quite
30:4951 seconds off
30:50and that's
30:51absolutely wiped him
30:53well
30:5550.78
30:57for Hafthor Bjornsson
30:58puts him
30:59very comfortably
31:00in the lead
31:00I think Darren Sandler
31:02was worried
31:02he's gonna have to
31:03catch him there
31:03that would have been
31:05a strongman feat
31:06in himself
31:06and that was
31:08a real battle
31:09Bjornsson
31:09you can see
31:10how much this means
31:11to him
31:11not just the world record
31:12in deadlift
31:13but to win
31:13overall
31:14and that was the second
31:20Darren realised
31:21he might go over
31:22what did it take
31:26out of Hafthor Bjornsson
31:28and was it worth it
31:29as we move on
31:31to our final pair
31:32Williams
31:33and Johnson
31:33can these guys
31:35close the gap
31:36to the top position
31:38they know
31:40what they have to do
31:41now to take
31:42the win here
31:43in this hammer hold
31:4450.78 seconds
31:46that's what's needed
31:48both tall men
31:49both have long arms
31:50that works
31:51against both of them
31:52Eddie Williams
31:53looks like a man
31:54who's
31:54well he's found his zen
31:56at least for the moment
31:58Johnson
32:00definitely got a bit
32:01of a wobble gate
32:02you can find that
32:03zen
32:04but it tends to disappear
32:05very rapidly
32:06yes the lactic acid
32:09sure does build up
32:10in your shoulders
32:11very quickly
32:12and there's no way
32:13to move it
32:14and shake it
32:15and get rid of it
32:15Williams goes down
32:19he was looking good early
32:20around about the time
32:21of Hoeth
32:22and can Johnson
32:23hang on much longer
32:24no
32:24so it'll be
32:26Bjornsson
32:26who'll take the win here
32:27quite a great showing
32:29from both Williams
32:30and Johnson
32:31just as Williams
32:33put it down
32:36it was as if
32:37Johnson had permission
32:38to do the same
32:39as you might expect
32:44Thor proving
32:45unbeatable
32:46on the hammer
32:46the Icelander
32:47lasting more than
32:487 seconds longer
32:49than Bryce Johnson
32:50the only other man
32:52to make it beyond
32:5240 agonising seconds
32:54backstage
32:56has that performance
32:58taken its toll
32:59on the Icelander
33:00returning now
33:01from his long absence
33:02and taking his time
33:03to recover
33:04how much does Thor
33:05have left in him
33:06for the final two events
33:08for now
33:09he's moved back
33:09into top spot
33:10in the strongman open
33:11Matt Ragg
33:12just a point and a half
33:13behind though
33:14with just two and a half
33:15points between
33:15the next five men
33:16Ratty is with the leader
33:18right now
33:19Thor
33:20how nuts is it
33:21that 5-10 is easier
33:22than front hole
33:23you know what
33:25my body is just
33:26wrecked right now
33:27after the 5-10
33:29I was in like
33:30the happy place
33:30you know
33:31we don't feel anything
33:31as I'm just
33:32happiness
33:32you know
33:33I'm so happy
33:33with my performance
33:34you know
33:34but now after
33:35after the time has
33:36passed
33:37and I've done
33:37a few more events
33:38my body is just
33:38wrecked
33:39thanks to you
33:40Simon
33:40well Thor's
33:42comeback story
33:43is not the only
33:44tale being told
33:44tonight in Birmingham
33:45with two events
33:46to go
33:47tension is mounting
33:48for everyone
33:49at the strongman open
33:50we're back with more
33:51on Giants Live
33:52welcome back to Giants Live
34:06in Birmingham
34:06it's been an extraordinary
34:07night so far here
34:09Hafthor Bjornsson
34:10back from retirement
34:11breaking the deadlift
34:12world record
34:13in his first event
34:14now after three
34:20more challenges
34:20Hafthor is still
34:21leading the field
34:22at the strongman open
34:23can he hold on
34:25and take the title
34:26let's find out
34:27with Colin and Danny
34:28well thanks James
34:29yes
34:30six events tonight
34:32and after four
34:33here's where we are
34:33well Hafthor Bjornsson
34:35has shifted the paradigm
34:36of what is possible
34:37in strongman
34:38he's on top
34:39with 40 points
34:40having also pulled
34:41a world record
34:42in deadlift today
34:43and now we move on
34:44to the Viking press
34:45Matt Raag
34:46and others
34:47who are the chasing pack
34:48will have to try
34:49and get some good reps
34:50in here
34:50150 kilos overhead
34:5260 seconds
34:53to do as many
34:54as possible
34:55well Paddy Haynes
34:56went earlier
34:56with the likes of
34:57Andrade and Stoltman
34:58on 10
34:59but Williams
34:59sits on top
35:00with 13
35:01so we move on
35:04to Matt Raag
35:05and Tristan Hoeth
35:06these guys
35:07second and third
35:08in the standings
35:09this is an opportunity
35:11perhaps for Raag
35:12to put some serious
35:14pressure on Thor
35:15if he can get
35:15a big enough number
35:17here
35:17Yes and Hoeth
35:18who's just a great
35:19all-round competitor
35:20attacks this first
35:21he's not wasting
35:22any of his time
35:23I'm not sure
35:24either man
35:25will be pressing
35:26for 60 seconds
35:27that will be impressive
35:28if they did
35:28and Raag has caught him
35:30Hoffman have to be careful
35:33the handles
35:35have to pass your ear
35:37that's right
35:38have to come down
35:38deep enough
35:39and Hoeth's finished
35:40on seven
35:40Raag
35:41can he get
35:41double figures
35:42no
35:43well I think
35:44that will be that
35:45for Matt Raag
35:47manages nine
35:48we still have one pair
35:53to come in
35:54that has Bjornsson in it
35:56it'll be fascinating
35:57to see if Bjornsson
35:58can again
35:59dig deep
36:00these two guys
36:01did their best
36:02but couldn't get
36:03past Williams
36:04so
36:04limited in how many
36:06points
36:06they will
36:07pull back here
36:08Bryce Johnson
36:10Hafthor Bjornsson
36:12next to go
36:14two absolute giants
36:16the six foot six
36:17Johnson gets underway
36:18very quickly
36:19and Bjornsson
36:20is the fatigue
36:21starting to build
36:22now
36:22he pulled that
36:26world record dead
36:27if surely
36:28that's taken
36:28an enormous amount
36:29out of him
36:30Johnson
36:31is he almost
36:32going too quickly
36:33here
36:33that's nine
36:34that's ten
36:35great use of the legs
36:36as if he's shot
36:37putting it up
36:38exploding
36:39with 150 kilos
36:41but Bjornsson
36:42slow and steady
36:43on the other side
36:44still ticking away
36:45he's equaled Williams
36:46he's gone in the lead
36:47Johnson
36:47and Bjornsson
36:48for double figures
36:49does he lock out
36:51yes
36:51yes
36:52he does
36:53but look at this
36:53from Johnson
36:54a massive
36:5615 reps
36:58oh goodness me
37:03one to beat
37:04Williams
37:05and one just for fun
37:06I have to say
37:07Bryce Johnson
37:07is proving to be
37:08a star in the making
37:10Hafthor Bjornsson
37:11once again
37:12a gritty performance
37:13and good points
37:14Bryce
37:15what a performance
37:16and I guess
37:17with your NFL background
37:18we should never have
37:19doubted it
37:19Viking press has been
37:21really good for me
37:22in the past
37:22I don't know what it is
37:24if it's just the leg drive
37:25I get most of my power
37:26around my legs anyway
37:27so it was a great event
37:28how tough is it
37:29to continue that power
37:31as you're getting
37:32into those big reps
37:33I mean you can
37:34definitely feel it
37:35you know
37:35I hit right around ten
37:36I was like
37:36I don't know
37:37how many more
37:37I've got left
37:38but I really want
37:39a podium spot
37:40so just kept grinding
37:41and just touching on that
37:43one event to go
37:44you're now joint second
37:46I mean right in the mix
37:48yep
37:48I'm stoked
37:49Power Sears is a great event
37:50for me in the past
37:51so I'm excited
37:52game on
37:53yeah
37:53oh yeah
37:54thank you guys
37:55yep
37:55thank you sir
37:56the American
37:57the American with a
37:58potentially very
37:59significant win there
38:00a massive 15 reps
38:02two more than
38:03Eddie Williams
38:03Gavin Bilton
38:04taking third
38:05while Thor
38:06tied fourth
38:07with a cluster
38:08of other strongmen
38:09and that means
38:10that while Thor
38:11is still top
38:12with one event to go
38:13Bryce Johnson
38:14has moved up
38:14to tie Matt Rack
38:15for second spot
38:16Tristan Hoer
38:17still in with a shout
38:18of taking a podium position
38:20it's back to Colin
38:21and Danny
38:21thanks James
38:23and yes
38:23we move on
38:24to the power stairs
38:25Colin
38:25200 to 250 kilos
38:28weights
38:29four of them
38:29have to be carried
38:30up these stairs
38:31each one
38:32and the fastest time wins
38:34simple as that
38:35Paddy Haynes has done it
38:36so do these other men
38:37but he leads
38:38with 30.78 seconds
38:40so Eddie Williams
38:46and Matt Rack
38:48next up
38:50Australia and New Zealand
38:51to show off
38:53exactly how they
38:54get the shopping home
38:55yes Williams
38:57on the left
38:58the Australian
38:58the New Zealander
38:59on the right
39:00Matt Rack
39:01and oh
39:01he has to get it
39:02over that lip
39:03that's one of the rules
39:04so it doesn't come back
39:05down at you
39:05when you're going
39:06on the next one
39:07that's why
39:08225 kilos
39:09on to 240
39:10for Williams
39:11and he's doing
39:12really well here
39:13he might be able
39:14to beat the 30 seconds
39:15of Paddy Haynes
39:16if he's quick
39:18on the last one
39:19well it will be
39:21very tight indeed
39:22but you never know
39:23I don't think
39:25he'd know
39:25he didn't quite manage
39:27that
39:27Eddie Williams
39:2832.89
39:29should have been tighter
39:30and Matt Rack
39:32gets it over the lip
39:34so much depends
39:36on how you do
39:37that final pull
39:38to get it over the lip
39:39it will really cost you
39:40a lot of time
39:40as it did for Matt Rack
39:42there
39:42a pensive eye
39:46from Hapthor Bjornsson
39:47this isn't
39:48sewn up yet
39:49he's going to have
39:49to put in a performance
39:50he's got a points lead
39:52if he does a decent
39:54top three performance
39:56he will win
39:56but his exhaustion
39:59level surely
40:00is
40:00at its highest
40:02it's ever been
40:03as he's on the right
40:04hand side
40:05the Icelanders
40:066'9
40:06against 6'6
40:08of Johnson
40:08in the USA
40:09on the left
40:10both very quick
40:11on the first one
40:11well Johnson
40:12needs to not only
40:13put in a great time
40:14here
40:15but he has to hope
40:16somehow
40:16that Thor
40:17crumbles
40:18Bjornsson making
40:21really precise work
40:23on that final lift
40:24of each weight
40:25he's getting over
40:26that lip
40:26and not taking
40:27any chances
40:28yes
40:28very deliberate
40:29here from Hapthor Bjornsson
40:31as he gets ready
40:32to finish this off
40:33now
40:34he won't
40:35do quite enough
40:37to win the power stairs
40:38but it doesn't matter
40:39because he's done enough
40:41to win the strong man
40:42open
40:42goodness me
40:44great showing
40:45from Johnson
40:4636.59
40:47but this is all
40:48about Hapthor Bjornsson
40:49back with a bang
40:51his ninth
40:52Giants Live title
40:54on a fantastic
40:55night of strength
40:56yes
40:57you think about it
40:58a world record
40:59well that would have
41:00been enough
41:00he could have sat out
41:01and retired from there
41:02there's his mum and dad
41:03his son
41:04what a moment for him
41:06dad hangs in tears
41:07and he stayed on
41:09and fought
41:09he might not have won
41:11every event
41:12but he's won the
41:12World Open 2
41:13welcome back
41:15Hapthor Bjornsson
41:16just a word
41:21for your perseverance
41:23your hardness
41:24the determination
41:25just to complete
41:27let alone win
41:28but just to get through
41:29it
41:29how mentally tough
41:30you are
41:30yeah you know
41:32I've gone through a lot
41:34I've fought a lot
41:35like I've been in the
41:36sport for a long time
41:37and you know
41:38if there's anything
41:39anything that I'm
41:42stronger that's to push
41:44myself to the limits
41:45and I
41:45tonight I definitely
41:47did that
41:48there were moments
41:50where I was just like
41:50I want to just quit
41:51but you know
41:52even though that
41:54thought comes in
41:55I'll never quit
41:56I know that
41:57within myself
41:58I would never quit
41:59but
41:59I'm going to feel it tomorrow
42:01how do you do it
42:03how have you gone from
42:03basketball
42:04to strongman
42:05to boxing
42:05back up
42:06to doing what you're doing now
42:08and be as dominant
42:09as you are
42:10if there's anything
42:11that I know
42:12I learned a lot
42:13from my dad
42:15and from my grandfather
42:16just how to work hard
42:18they taught me
42:19how to work hard
42:20and there was this mindset
42:23when I was younger
42:23you just keep going
42:25no matter what
42:26you know
42:27there's no complaining
42:28you just move forward
42:29in life
42:29and you know
