Transcript
00:00Right now we're about to highlight another important part of the holiday season.
00:04And it actually happens to be one of my favorite parts.
00:07I'm talking about giving back, people.
00:09And right now we're going to give back in a major way with the help of tonight's sponsor,
00:14the film The Color Purple, which arrives in theaters Christmas Day.
00:17For our first magic moment of the evening, we are shining a spotlight on Miss Jamila
00:22Lynn.
00:23Now, as the Director of Specialized Programming at Benedict College, Jamila goes the extra
00:32mile to provide students with leadership and empower them to understand that their mission
00:37is far more important than their major.
00:40Most of all, she takes pride in her work, making it her personal and professional goal to decode
00:44and rewrite narratives for and about black students that promote educational equity.
00:49Jamila, for all that you've done this year and every year, we're honored to celebrate
00:53you as the Outstanding Educator of the Year, you see it, Outstanding, which recognizes an
01:02organization or individual who goes above and beyond to give back to their community.
01:07Please give it up for Jamila one more time, now, for your dedication and all this important
01:16work you've been doing, you and your students are invited to attend an exclusive screening of
01:20the new movie, The Color Purple, which officially hits theaters on Christmas Day.
01:29Outstanding!
01:31Thank you to The Color Purple, in essence, for recognizing my contribution to black higher
01:38education.
01:39Most of what I do to support students happens behind the scenes.
01:43So this public acknowledgment of my commitment is incredibly special.
01:47Over the last 17 years, I've had the privilege of engaging thousands of students.
01:53And one thing I understood early on is you can't teach who you fear and don't love.
01:59This work is far from glamorous, yet one genuine and meaningful interaction with a student has
02:05the power to change their entire trajectory.
02:08To my family, especially my daughter Zoe, thank you for always sharing me with so many.
02:14To my mentors, thank you for sharpening my ideas and opening doors.
02:20Educating students is about saving lives.
02:23Our children are waiting for us to show up.
02:25Thank you again for this prestigious honor.
02:28The new film, The Color Purple, hits theaters on December 25th and is a bold new take on
02:35the beloved classic.
02:36Produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones, early audiences
02:42are hailing The Color Purple as a show-stopping crowd-pleaser that you must see on the big screen.
02:47Let's take a look.
02:48If your head held high, just like mom taught us, even if we have the part, you and me,
03:00us have one heart.
03:01How come you don't have none?
03:03All I have is my sister.
03:05Get off my back!
03:07I know she's somewhere.
03:09It's time for you to see the world!
03:13It's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright,
03:20it's gonna be alright, it's gonna be alright, we're gonna meet again.
03:21The Color Purple, rated PG-13.
