00:00The 2025 AP Coach of the Year is Mike Verbal.
00:09Mike Verbal is busy preparing for the Super Bowl.
00:14Mike Verbal is preparing for the Super Bowl.
00:17I didn't realize she doubled down on it.
00:19Oh, yeah, she followed up on it.
00:20She thinks his name is Verbal.
00:21She'd done her homework.
00:23Yeah.
00:23She's like, did you know he's preparing for the Super Bowl?
00:26Do you know who that β I don't know who that was.
00:28And I feel like at 6 o'clock and 42 seconds or whatever we're at right now,
00:34I'm going to totally expose my age.
00:35I'm sure it's somebody who everybody knows, and I just don't know who it is.
00:39Nobody knows who anybody is anymore.
00:41A presenter at the NFL Honors?
00:42It's somebody famous.
00:43No, like Drewski.
00:44Okay, so there's a boatload of people who don't know Drewski.
00:48Drewski and I speak for prize picks.
00:49Yeah, despite Drewski being a really famous guy.
00:52Yeah.
00:52But everybody's Internet famous these days.
00:55Yeah, that's probably β
00:55There really aren't even any movie stars.
00:57So the β yeah.
00:59But Mike Verbal, you feel like somebody would have prepped her for it.
01:02Does that give them a leg up in the Super Bowl that she botched his name,
01:06or is that a sign of things to come?
01:08It's an extra chip on their shoulder.
01:11Tom Brady doesn't like Mike Verbal.
01:13This lady doesn't like Mike Verbal.
01:15They can't even acknowledge β they can't acknowledge the greatness of Mike Verbal.
01:19That was literally the first thing that I saw waking up this morning, like, oh, yeah,
01:23it's going to be a good day.
01:24It's going to be a good day.
01:25And when we got here β
01:27Mike Verbal is β Mike emotional.
01:29For the first time in three days, the Snickers bin is full.
01:33Yeah.
01:34The frozen Snicker ice cream bin is full.
01:36Which is perfect because you and I swore off refined sugar at 10 p.m. last night.
01:40It's all we've been eating.
01:42It starts now.
01:43Yeah, it starts now.
01:44No more sugar, Sean and Seth.
01:46After the four Snickers that I ate this morning.
01:48Well, they've got caramel.
01:49They saw a caramel flavor.
01:50No, salted caramel.
01:51Like, obviously, they always have caramel, but it's salted caramel.
01:55Yeah.
01:55And I felt like it was my journalistic duty.
01:57Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:58To go ahead and sample that.
02:00This is β I'm going to tell you what, Sean, this morning β I woke up this morning with a bread hangover,
02:04which is worse, I've learned, than an alcohol hangover.
02:09Yeah.
02:10Because I had 17 dinner rolls last night.
02:13It was a fun dinner last night.
02:14And then I also did have those mini donuts because of journalism.
02:17I had to try with this little stand of mini donuts.
02:21Yeah.
02:22They were good.
02:23So we went to the Fisherman's Wharf, Pier 39 last night.
02:27We ate at a market, something or other.
02:31Yeah.
02:31Some restaurant.
02:32Really good seafood.
02:33Really good seafood restaurant.
02:36And we got full.
02:39Yeah.
02:39We got real full.
02:40Those sourdough rolls β I've never eaten anything like them.
02:43They look harmless.
02:45Yeah.
02:45They look like little dinner rolls that you would eat at Thanksgiving and eat like β
02:48you know, the Hawaiian rolls.
02:49You get like 16 of them at a time.
02:52They look harmless.
02:53But then you bite them and they're really thick.
02:55Right.
02:55Each one weighed as much as a kettlebell.
02:57Yeah.
02:57It was β I had 17 kettlebell rolls last night.
03:00It was good.
03:01But you got a workout in while you were eating them because they were β
03:03Yeah.
03:04They were so heavy.
03:04Almost straight to pack.
03:06Yeah.
03:06So β and then we had the β we decided we were going to go full tourism mode.
03:11And you and I had the Alabama β or the Alcatraz Slammers.
03:15Dude, I want to call them Alabama Slammers also.
03:16They were like β served in like a hurricane glass.
03:19They were Alcatraz Slammers.
03:21Which is what they β this was the preferred mixed drink that they served on Alcatraz.
03:25Yeah, right.
03:25Two kinds of rum.
03:26That's what I figured.
03:27Yeah.
03:27Pineapple.
03:28Yeah, cold, frosty.
03:29Orange.
03:29Yeah, yeah, yeah.
03:30With a little orange slice along the rim of the glass.
03:33Yeah, you and I went to Alcatraz on Tuesday.
03:35And I'm like, this feels like a place that they drank fruity drinks out in the courtyard.
03:38Little umbrella drinks.
03:40Yeah, that's what it was.
03:41It felt like β
03:41Play some croquet.
03:42It felt like something you would drink at Sandals, Jamaica or something.
03:45Yeah.
03:45But we had two of them a piece, and it was really fun.
03:48It was good.
03:50And then you got β
03:50Well, I had a β
03:51I thought β
03:51I had to add a third of my second one that I gave it to you.
03:54Yeah.
03:54I dumped it in your β
03:54Yeah.
03:55Collectively, we drank four of them.
03:56Yeah.
03:57So I thought when we were walking back to the Ubers at the front of the wharf out at the street,
04:02you know, because we were out all the way there, like, overlooking Alcatraz.
04:06And when we were walking back and they had the mini donut stand, I don't know why I thought this.
04:11I'm like, he's probably just joking.
04:13He's probably just kidding.
04:14Of all people that would think β that should think that you were serious, it would be me,
04:17because I've sat next to you and seen you.
04:18You know what I can do to a donut.
04:19I know the damage you can do to sweets.
04:22And I'm like, he's really doing it.
04:24He's really doing it.
04:25And you stopped and got the mini donuts, and I was really proud of you.
04:27They were kind of β they were kind of like Shipley, but just tiny little miniature ones, too,
04:31because they were β it's fried food and donut for whatever.
04:34Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:35They were good.
04:36No, but you know what?
04:37I think what it really was, I was examining myself as I was thinking about why do I feel so miserable.
04:42And I think this happens every year because β seriously, it's not a dinner roll hangover.
04:48But every year by Friday on Radio Row, I'm petty as hell.
04:51Oh, yeah.
04:52I'm petty.
04:53I'm very, very petty.
04:54Okay.
04:54I sit here, and I'm watching people get inducted to the Hall of Fame.
04:58I'm watching teams prepare for the Super Bowl.
05:00And all of this.
05:02Why can't this be you?
05:03I don't even know if it's as much as that.
05:07It's almost even more petty.
05:10It's just not even putting myself into it.
05:12I don't like seeing all these people have success around me.
05:15I just β I don't like how happy everybody is.
05:17Yes.
05:18It's annoying me.
05:19Stop being so happy.
05:22All these guys β hey, even β not the future Hall of Famers or anything.
05:25Some of these 23-year-old rookies or second-year players, with their entire lives ahead of them.
05:31A bunch of cash in their pocket.
05:32I hate them.
05:33Watching you right now.
05:35Watching you right now.
05:35You know what I'm most excited about this morning?
05:37Yeah.
05:38For these Ithaca College kids to get here and so they can see, like, this is what it's like at the end of the week when you get to be a grizzled vet, kid.
05:45You're miserable.
05:47You're angry at everybody.
05:48You're on a donut sourdough hangover.
05:51Typical media guy.
05:52This is how it's going to go.
05:53I'm going to tell you something about these kids these days.
05:56You're going to look like you haven't slept in five days.
05:58Which one of you even has school loans?
06:01If you don't, I'm going to kick you in the head.
06:03Little rich bastards.
06:05I didn't own my first blazer until I was 24 years old.
06:08I can't wait for them to get here.
06:09You guys know β some of these kids have been mourning every day.
06:12Oh, I know.
06:13Little rich bastards.
06:13I know.
06:14I know.
06:15Without paying for all this clothing.
06:17That is true.
06:17Yeah, they've been changing it up, like Reba McIntyre.
06:20It's unbelievable.
06:21Like, during a concert.
06:22Divas.
06:23She wears, like, seven outfits.
06:24These kids showed up with a trunk at the hotel.
06:28They each had their own trunk of clothing.
06:30So the week started with us casually and very friendly pulling one of them onto the show.
06:35And it's going to end with us berating them.
06:38Listen, you little bastards.
06:39I get so β watching all these videos of the Hall of Famers with their happy families,
06:43they disgust me.
06:44I've been handed a note that the presenter's name that said Mike Verbal was Tiffany Haddish,
06:51which means nothing to me.
06:52Erin Rabel just handed it to me.
06:55That was her β you're just telling me her name.
06:57Okay, I got you.
06:58I got you.
06:58All right.
06:59It requires a Google search.
07:00She's an American Canadian β a comedian.
07:02Oh, okay.
07:03I might as well call her Canadian since she's going to say verbal.
07:07She doesn't know the American pronunciation.
07:11She's a Canadian and factress.
07:13Yes.
07:14Oh, man.
07:16So, yeah.
07:17So last night at the NFL Honors, aside from Mike Verbal's name getting butchered twice in 10 seconds.
07:24So the Hall β
07:25Druski intentionally butchered Jackson Smith and Jigba's name.
07:28Oh, I didn't hear that.
07:29I'm not going to β I'm not going to say it the way he intentionally mispronounced it.
07:33Should I not do it either?
07:34No.
07:35No.
07:36Should Aaron not do it?
07:37No.
07:38You should β nobody's sitting right here.
07:40Could Reggie get away with it?
07:41Sure.
07:42So this is β yeah.
07:45But β so he intentionally mispronounced it.
07:47Okay.
07:48Because Druski obviously knows football.
07:49Yeah.
07:50For those of you β for the fellow olds who don't know Druski, he does a lot of funny skits on the Internet.
07:57Did he β
07:57But he's gone mainstream now.
07:58Was his pronunciation worse than Gronk's pronunciation?
08:02What was Gronk's?
08:02Oh, did β
08:03No, no.
08:04That was Emeka Obuka.
08:05My bad.
08:05Yeah.
08:05It was Jackson Smith and Jigba.
08:07Different wide receiver from Ohio State.
08:08What did he say?
08:08What was his Emeka Obuka?
08:09Emeka β a big boo.
08:16We β Gronk β
08:17Mecca big boo.
08:18Gronk walked right past you and me yesterday over at the Bounty Display.
08:23Yeah.
08:23Because we did an interview with Lad McConkie.
08:26If you want to hear the shortest interview in the history of interviews, listen to our β don't blink.
08:30You listen to our Lad McConkie, Keenan Allen interview from yesterday.
08:33Because Keenan had to take a phone call before we got up there.
08:35Is that what it was?
08:36Yeah.
08:36Keenan Allen was on a phone call.
08:37So we got up there.
08:38They were like, hey, guys, you've got seven minutes.
08:40Which is β okay, that's whatever.
08:42Aaron Raybal had to set up all the mics and everything, too.
08:45So we wound up getting, like, four and a half minutes.
08:47Be sure you β be sure you mention Bounty three times in the seven minutes.
08:51Yeah.
08:51If that was β that was the ultimate β like β yeah, that one's got a good story β we get a good Harbaugh story out of that.
08:57I won't spoil it.
08:58Yeah, it was β it was fine.
08:59Yeah, it was β no, it was fine.
09:01But they were β yeah, so Gronk walked out as we were waiting, and they were wearing these, like, Letterman sweaters.
09:06Yeah, sweaters, not jackets.
09:07These bounty Letterman sweaters.
09:10Yeah.
09:10And I β
09:11Mad at myself now.
09:12They go, what's up, Big Boo?
09:13How you doing?
09:15Well, I thought that I wanted to β I was trying to figure out a way to turn it into a Letterman jacket thing.
09:21Like, if the Texans showed up the next time they played the Patriots in New England, if they were Letterman sweaters, would β how would fans feel about that?
09:31I think I know.
09:32Well, remember β I remember Stingley wore β it was β
09:35Stingley wore a Letterman jacket.
09:36Yeah, but people tried to make something of it, but it wasn't β yeah, it wasn't, like, a team-wide thing.
09:40No.
09:40Plus, it wasn't a β it wasn't a Texans Letterman jacket.
09:43Yeah, I couldn't really β I just saw a picture.
09:45His arm was kind of over what was the β
09:46It seemed like a really cool and stylish Letterman jacket.
09:49The ones they wore in 2012 seemed cool and stylish.
09:52If they won that game, they would have sold β they would have cleaned out the team store of those things.
09:56Yeah.
09:57But instead, if they put any in there now, there's probably still some of them in there now from 2012 in the team store, in the back.
10:04Hall of Fame class from last night, they announced it.
10:08Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Keekly β I thought those three were locks, and they made it.
10:16Adam Vinatieri and Roger Craig.
10:18Yeah, and Vinatieri making it in as a kicker.
10:21Yep.
10:22How many kickers are in the Hall of Fame now?
10:24Not many still.
10:26Yeah.
10:26Yeah.
10:26And Roger Craig was the β it's interesting because remember β remember one of the explanations for some of the team β
10:34the people who didn't vote for Kraft and Belichick was that, well, these three senior members, this might be their last opportunity to make it in.
10:43Yeah.
10:43So we want to be sure that we give them that chance, and then meanwhile, one of them makes it in.
10:47And he's the youngest of the three.
10:50Right.
10:50That he still would have had more opportunities.
10:52So β
10:52Hall of Fame's a mess.
10:54I don't really care, but it's a bit of a mess right now.
10:55I feel like the people β yeah, that's β people that explained it away as I wanted to be sure those senior members get in,
11:02it really feels like that's a nice and convenient excuse for β
11:04Yeah.
11:04Just own it.
11:05Own it.
11:06Yeah.
11:06Yeah.
11:06Save β just own it.
11:08Don't act like, oh, no, the scandals or anything did nothing β had nothing β had no effect on my voting.
11:17Just own it.
11:18This is a good class, just in terms of accolade.
11:21Like, Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, and Luke Kuechly is a pretty strong three at the top for this class.
11:28By the way, prior to last night, three kickers had been inducted into the Hall of Fame,
11:33so Vinatieri's the fourth, Jan Stennerud, Morton Anderson, and Gary Anderson.
11:39Not related.
11:40You know how I know?
11:41They spell it different.
11:42Yeah, that's right.
11:42That was always β the commentators would always have to explain that.
11:46Morton Anderson β Morton Anderson always β he had kind of that Mark Davis haircut going.
11:50Didn't he?
11:51Oh, yeah.
11:51Like, kind of that, you know, just β
11:52Well, he was old as hell.
11:53He almost just β he had a classic β
11:55He's a foreigner, too.
11:55He had a classic 80s haircut.
11:57Yeah.
11:58And he just kind of kept whatever he had in college.
12:00What do you think of Matt Stafford winning his first MVP award last night?
12:03I'm cool with that.
12:04By a nose hair over Drake May.
12:07Five points.
12:07Oh, it was only five points, really.
12:09It was really close.
12:09Yeah, they β only one more first place vote than Drake May.
12:12I saw β there were a few people that had really good explanations or arguments for Drake May
12:17that accounted for, you know, the strength of schedule of the Patriots and all of that.
12:22And by and large, I give them credit for those arguments.
12:27I still β I don't feel like this is just simply a Matt Stafford lifetime achievement award.
12:33I think there's more to it than that.
12:34He was good this year.
12:35Yeah, he was just very, very good.
12:37And the defenses, the common opponents, et cetera, et cetera.
12:42The fact of the matter is for the entire team, it was a harder standard.
12:47It was a harder level of competition.
12:49Yeah.
12:49You know, and people are trying to break it down by like, well, actually by DBOA,
12:53the defenses that he faced weren't that much different than Drake May, et cetera, et cetera.
12:57I think the biggest thing about the Rams this year was that their team that had to transform their offense
13:02as the season went along.
13:04And they did a lot of things that you can't do with a second-year quarterback.
13:09You know, like if you swap situations, I don't think the Rams are able to pull off with Drake May
13:14what they did with Matt Stafford.
13:15I think that's fair.
13:16If you flip Matt Stafford over to the Patriots, I think that Matt Stafford has the same year
13:22as Drake May does with the Patriots this year.
13:24I would agree.
13:24But I'll give credit to Drake May that he probably β I initially, over the course of the last month or so,
13:31I've become more and more impressed with what Drake May did in the regular season.
13:36And that's as he's not necessarily doing much at all in the playoffs.
13:40Yeah, that's right.
13:41That's right.
13:42The voting looked like this, the top five.
13:44Matt Stafford wins by five points and one first-place vote over Drake May.
13:48And then it's a big drop-off.
13:50Josh Allen got two first-place votes.
13:51He finished third, way behind those two guys.
13:54The other first-place vote, the only other first-place vote, went to Justin Herbert,
13:57who finished outside the top five.
13:59Trevor Lawrence finished fifth in the MVP voting.
14:02Would not have predicted that at the beginning of the year.
14:05So Stafford, May, Allen, Christian McCaffrey fourth, Trevor Lawrence fifth.
14:10Will Anderson finished second behind a unanimous Miles Garrett for Defensive Player of the Year.
14:16He was the only other player to get over 100 points based on the voting system.
14:21And yet, Miles Garrett got every single first-place vote.
14:24If you had to bet on Will Anderson Jr. winning a Defensive Player of the Year award in the next three years,
14:30would you put β
14:31I don't know, that's almost always β I always go with the field versus one individual.
14:35I'm giving you three seasons for him.
14:37Right, right, right, right.
14:38If he stays healthy and he plays at the same level, yeah, there's going to be a year where he just β
14:43you know how it goes with sacks, especially.
14:45Sometimes it's just flukishness.
14:46Well, the funny thing about that, Seth β
14:48I would say yes.
14:49I think there's a very good chance of he does.
14:50I do, too.
14:51I do, too.
14:52The funny thing about that and the encouraging thing about the voting,
14:55if you're into the awards, and I am, is that Will finished, like, ninth in sacks.
15:01Yeah.
15:01And yet finished second for Defensive Player of the Year behind the guy who set the sack record.
15:05This is where I think some of the advanced stat sites and everything helped Will Anderson out.
15:09Yeah, 100%.
15:10Because I think there's an appreciation for his ability to play both the run and the pass.
15:16Yeah.
15:17Some of the impact plays, the pressures and all of those things that didn't used to just even be
15:22brought up or people didn't β if you didn't watch Will Anderson every week,
15:25you wouldn't know necessarily how much impact he has on a game,
15:28except now they have all these advanced stats.
15:30That's my point.
15:31Yeah.
15:31I'm encouraged by that because I think that's going to be Will's game as he continues to evolve as a player,
15:36as he does everything.
15:38Like, 10 years ago, Daniil Hunter probably would have gotten more votes than Will Anderson
15:41because he got more sacks.
15:42Right.
15:42You know, he finished third in sacks and Will finished ninth or whatever he was.
15:45So Defensive Player of the Year, Will Anderson.
15:49Offensive Player of the Year, Christian McCaffrey.
15:52And Offensive Rookie of the Year, Tett McMillan from Carolina wins that.
15:57And Mike Verbal, one head coach β one coach of the year.
16:00Mike Verbal!
16:01Whoa!
16:03Mike Verbal!
16:04Verbal's another one, man.
16:05There's some β there's some good stuff coming out on Verbal this week just about how he manages his team
16:12and everything.
16:13Yeah.
16:13And he does β he's kind of like β like he and D'Amico are completely different personalities.
16:17But sometimes a lot of former players who are coaches don't actually translate a lot of the lessons you learned
16:26as a player into being a coach as well.
16:29If anything, they become just β sometimes like the worst players' coaches because of whatever reason.
16:36But I think that both Verbal and D'Amico kind of just took a career of seeing what you like,
16:43what you don't like, what guys respond to.
16:46And they've β they transfer it into the way they coach their team.
16:49And they do it in much different fashions, but it works for both of them.
