Ukrainian forces have destroyed a Russian S-300 surface-to-air missile system. Video footage circulated on social media shows the overnight precision strike at the air defence system that was followed by a strong explosion. The destruction of the S-300 missile system is a major blow to Russia’s long-range strike capabilities, limiting its ability to hit Ukrainian positions and civilian infrastructure. Capable of intercepting aircraft, cruise and ballistic missiles, S-300 missile system remains a key component of Russia's multi-layered air defense and can engage multiple targets at ranges of up to 150 kilometers. Russian troops also deploy the S-300 missile system in strikes on Ukrainian-controlled territory and military positions of the Ukrainian army. Beyond the S-300, Ukraine has targeted a broader network of Russian air-defence assets, including newer systems and supporting infrastructure in occupied territories and, at times, deeper behind the front lines. According to updated figures, Russia has lost over 11 000 tanks, around 23 000 armored fighting vehicles, around 36,000 artillery systems, more than a thousand multiple-rocket launchers and air-defence systems, and large numbers of drones, missiles, trucks and specialized equipment in its nearly four-year war of invasion in Ukraine. Total Russian combat losses since the full-scale invasion began on February 24, 2022 have reached well over 1.2 million personnel killed, wounded, or missing as of early February
