01:42and that is presented by Amino.

01:53Hello, everybody.
01:54My name is Sabrina Henry.
01:56I'm Amino's Mariano, principal scientist
01:58as well as the brain ambassador.
02:00Well, let's do that, too.
02:03And with that, in my role,
02:04I develop skin care products
02:05as well as you may have seen me
02:07on our latest TV commercial,
02:09Healthy is Our Nature,
02:10and you'll see me on our TV
02:11talking about signs for your skin.
02:14So with me today, I have Felicia Walker,
02:17who is a beauty and skin expert,
02:19entrepreneur, and editor.
02:21And also with us today,
02:23I also have Angela, Dr. Angela Ford,
02:26who is the chief program officer
02:27of Black Women's Health Imperative.

02:30She is a PhD social worker,
02:32and you're understanding,
02:33building the healthy connections
02:34for us as Black women.
02:36So thank you, ladies, both for joining me.
02:38So let's go ahead and sit down,
02:40and let's get to it.
02:44All right.
02:44So we're here to talk about
02:46a very important subject matter
02:48called sensitive skin.
02:50Now, the audience, you know, today,
02:52are part of my Amino family.
02:54So with things being family,
02:56there's important information
02:57you get to know about
02:58that other people generally wouldn't.
03:00And, you know, Angela,
03:03you and Felicia already know this,
03:04but we are here to talk about
03:05that this summer we're dropping
03:07our first-ever report
03:08on the state of sensitivity.
03:11And what it is is that sensitive skin,
03:13we've got patients to find
03:14that there's a direct impact
03:16with well-being and your emotional health.
03:18So now, what do you ladies say about that?
03:21Now, with me,
03:22you're going to step into a classroom,
03:24and we're going to learn about our skin
03:25on the microbiological level.
03:27Okay?
03:27We're going to understand
03:28what sensitive skin is,
03:30how we can identify it,
03:32what does it look like,
03:33what are some of the implications,
03:34how can we manage to be
03:36in that specific skin state,
03:38and then also,
03:39what are the ways
03:40that we can champion one another
03:41as a community
03:42and build confidence
03:43even as we're going through
03:44this specific sensitive skin state.
03:46So now, are you ready, ladies,
03:48to get into it?
03:50All right.
03:51So now, Felicia,
03:52the first question,
03:53they'll see you.
03:54So, in 2006,
03:56you turned your passion
03:57into your,
03:58you turned your passion
03:59into perfection, right?
04:00And you launched
04:01a top-rated beauty blog
04:02called Peace of That Beauty,
04:03where you're helping women
04:04achieve and maintain
04:05their skin wellness.
04:07So now, thinking about yourself,
04:09how have you achieved that?
04:11First of all,
04:12again, good morning.
04:13I'm so excited to be here
04:14and to speak on the topic.
04:16It's very interesting.
04:17It's been such a journey,
04:18and I say it's now
04:19in a straight line.
04:20It's definitely been
04:21some twists and curves.
04:23And in my 20s,
04:24I, for me,
04:25my skincare journey
04:26was really about
04:27solving a problem.
04:29And so many of us,
04:30so I wasn't conditioned
04:32to have, like,
04:32a skincare routine
04:33and care for my skin.
04:34So it was really
04:35about problem solutions.
04:36That was, like,
04:37my 20s.
04:37I had adult acne,
04:39and it was, like,
04:39trying to figure out
04:40my acne.
04:41And it was really
04:41my first time
04:42really connecting
04:43with skincare,
04:44going to a dermatologist,
04:46you know,
04:46doing those things.
04:47Even in my 30s,
04:49and I, you know,
04:50was a mom,
04:51and so then you're
04:51seeing these changes
04:52in your skin.
04:53And at that point,
04:54you're really transitioning
04:55into seeing this
04:57as, like,
04:57caring for myself
04:58and taking that time.
05:00And now,
05:01that's where I kind of am
05:02in the journey,
05:03where it's about
05:04infesting my skin.
05:05Because I would say,
05:06like,
05:06the best skin
05:06you're ever going to have
05:07is today,
05:08so you want to do
05:08the things to preserve
05:09and protect it.
05:11And so it's really
05:11shifting from, like,
05:13she's got a problem
05:14to how I fix it
05:16to make this my skin.
05:17It's very important.
05:18It's the largest organ,
05:19and I need to invest
05:20the time and take care
05:22of it and do the things
05:22that I need to do.
05:23So that's a bit
05:24about my skincare journey
05:26and where I am today.
05:27Awesome.
05:29And I love the fact
05:29that you called it
05:30a journey,
05:30because it really is.
05:32And with that journey,
05:33comes number 18,
05:34right?
05:35And so for me,
05:36as a scientist,
05:37when I think about
05:37creating skincare products,
05:39I think about the consumer,
05:41I think about the ingredients
05:42that they're using
05:43to see a specific
05:44skin condition,
05:45and also how
05:46and when they're using it.
05:47So with that,
05:48could you tell us
05:49a little bit about
05:50your very personal
05:51skincare routine?
05:53And then also,
05:54as black women,
05:55what are some things
05:56that we can pay attention
05:56to as we're
05:57locally in our own
05:59personal skincare routine?
06:01Yes.
06:01I love this question
06:03because I think
06:04that a lot of us,
06:07even like myself,
06:08growing up,
06:08I was not taught
06:09at a young age,
06:10this is your skincare routine.
06:12You know,
06:13you're taught,
06:13don't go like
06:14the mouse and have sheet.
06:15Like, that's it.
06:16That was really my next
06:17in the skincare conversation.
06:19So the one word
06:20that comes to mind
06:21to me is balance.
06:22And it's always like
06:24at my middle age,
06:25the main thing
06:25that I focus on
06:26with my eight-year-old
06:27is trying to find
06:28the balance in your skin.
06:30Because again,
06:30skin is an organ.
06:31It's going to do
06:32what it does
06:32is constantly changing.
06:33It's adjusting sensitivities
06:34to weather, water, climate,
06:37all sorts of things
06:38where all the changes.
06:39So for me,
06:39the big word
06:40in terms of skin
06:41is really balance
06:42and trying to find
06:43your balance
06:44and what works for you.
06:46And, you know,
06:46we've gone through
06:47this phase
06:48as women of color
06:49when we didn't have it.
06:50We have a lot of products
06:51that cater to us
06:52and we can see ourselves
06:53in advertising
06:54and now it's kind of
06:55like the shit
06:56where there's like
06:56different things out there
06:57and you're like,
06:58oh my god,
06:59how do I navigate
07:00and I don't know
07:01what to do?
07:02So it's really,
07:03my skincare
07:04is really rooted
07:05in understanding
07:06my skin intimately
07:07and understanding
07:10what works for my skin
07:11and sticking to that
07:12consistently.
07:14So if I see
07:15something on TikTok,
07:16I'm not like,
07:16oh my god,
07:17I'm going to go out
07:17and buy this
07:18because I know,
07:18you know what,
07:19there's an ingredient
07:20in that.
07:20I know my skin
07:20doesn't respond
07:21to very well
07:22so I'm going to avoid
07:23when you have to see
07:24something new
07:24that you guys
07:25and if you don't
07:25know my skin
07:26does respond to
07:27really well
07:27and I'm not trying,
07:29you know,
07:29so again,
07:30it's about balance.
07:31Finding the thing
07:32that keeps the products
07:33in the care
07:34that keeps your skin
07:35calm,
07:36hydrated,
07:37balanced,
07:38and also understanding
07:39your skin
07:39very intimately
07:40so that you know
07:41what works for you
07:42because what works
07:43for you,
07:43Sabrina,
07:44it's going to be
07:44different for me
07:45so it's going to be
07:45different to really
07:46understanding your skin
07:46and what works well
07:47for you.
07:48I love that.
07:49I love the fact
07:50that you mentioned
07:50consistency is key
07:53and it comes through
07:54whatever stage
07:56that your skin
07:56is going through
07:57and especially
07:58if you have
07:58sensitive skin.
07:59So from each
08:00I already mentioned
08:00some of the skin
08:01conditions that are
08:02prevalent
08:02as far as you
08:04may be more
08:04prone to rashes,
08:06eaginess,
08:07inflammation,
08:08dry patches,
08:10you know,
08:10those are some
08:11of the conditions
08:11that we may have
08:12experienced.
08:12I know I have
08:13experience with
08:13sensitive skin
08:14so take the read
08:15in the room,
08:16you can raise your
08:17hand or nod your
08:18head for any of
08:19you who have
08:19ever experienced
08:20any of these
08:21skin conditions
08:21whether it be
08:2210 years ago,
08:2310 days ago.
08:25Okay,
08:25I see the hands
08:25out there.
08:26Yes.
08:27So with that,
08:29research has shown
08:30that 71% of
08:31adult adults in the
08:32U.S.
08:33have had sensitive
08:33skin and that
08:35that number has
08:35nearly doubled
08:36for people who
08:37self-report not
08:38having sensitive
08:39skin and that's
08:40major.
08:41You know,
08:41and Felicia
08:42mentioned it
08:42as a pathway
08:43we're getting
08:43into data with
08:44information,
08:45we're learning
08:46more about our
08:46skins and how
08:47to solve the
08:48issues that it
08:49may have and
08:50research has
08:51also shown that
08:52various ethnic
08:53groups, you
08:54know,
08:54sensitive skin
08:55is the same
08:56but how it
08:57shows up and
08:58the severity
08:59that is impacted
09:01by the difference
09:01ethnic groups,
09:03there is a
09:03difference.
09:04So now Felicia
09:05would answer
09:05you this
09:06question.
09:07Research has
09:07shown that
09:08we as a
09:08black community
09:09and we tend
09:10to have more
09:11severity when
09:11it comes to
09:12skin diseases
09:13and conditions
09:14such as
09:14racism and
09:15acne.
09:16Now, would
09:17you agree with
09:18that statement?
09:20I do agree
09:22to some extent.
09:23I know that
09:24I feel darker
09:25skin were more
09:26prone to
09:27hyperpigmentation
09:28being something
09:29that I've been
09:30in the beauty
09:30industry for
09:31about 20
09:32years and
09:32it's consistently
09:33the skin
09:34condition issue
09:36that I hear
09:37most that women
09:38are still looking
09:39for answers for
09:40hyperpigmentation
09:41that is something
09:42that continues to
09:44be an issue
09:45that presents
09:45itself again
09:46whether it's
09:46a bug bite
09:47and pimple
09:48you know,
09:49we just respond
09:50you know,
09:51it kicks in
09:52and it's trying
09:52to protect
09:53it's a dark
09:55spot
09:55so I would
09:56agree with
09:56that to some
09:57extent
09:57and I also
09:58think because
09:59we can
10:00in the story
10:02that I can speak
10:02for myself
10:02and for many
10:03women like me
10:04we weren't
10:05conditioned to
10:05have a skin
10:06care routine
10:06so we're not
10:07learning about
10:08our skin
10:08from a very
10:08early age
10:09so those
10:10sensitivities
10:11I think are
10:11more prone
10:12to present
10:12themselves
10:13and we don't
10:13know what
10:13to do
10:14you know
10:14because it
10:15gets so much
10:15on it
10:16is really
10:16problems
10:17in this
10:17morning
10:17because how
10:18a lot
10:18of us
10:18arrive in
10:19skin
10:19care
10:19like how
10:20do I
10:20get rid of
10:20these dark
10:20circles
10:21but we weren't
10:22thinking about
10:22hydrating the
10:23eye area
10:24and wearing sunscreen
10:24to prevent them
10:25you know
10:26so I think
10:27I do a freaking
10:27time
10:28but I think
10:28because sometimes
10:29we're catching
10:30up on the
10:31skin care
10:31conversation
10:32because we
10:32did
10:32or a black
10:33old friend
10:33you know
10:34so we just
10:34like oh
10:35we don't need
10:35to talk
10:35about skin
10:36care
10:36so because
10:37we're catching
10:37up on that
10:38these things
10:39may present
10:39you know
10:40on our skin
10:41more you know
10:42we're still
10:43figuring out
10:44how to solve
10:44this sometimes
10:45yeah
10:45very true
10:46so now Angela
10:47with your work
10:48that you do
10:49on the
10:49black women's
10:49health imperative
10:50what would you
10:51do with the
10:52characterized
10:53the mental
10:53and emotional
10:54toll
10:54that we
10:55as black
10:55women
10:56go through
10:56when we
10:57have
10:57various
10:58skin
10:58sensitivities
10:59I would
11:00characterize it
11:01as being
11:01very high
11:02the toll
11:03is
11:03and if you
11:04consider
11:05that skin
11:06is something
11:08everybody
11:08sees
11:09so depending
11:10on where
11:10your sensitivity
11:12is
11:13you may not
11:13be able to
11:14hide it
11:15and often
11:15times that
11:16has us
11:17perceive
11:17ourselves
11:18as something
11:20unworthy
11:21and our
11:22self-esteem
11:23as though
11:23and other
11:24individuals
11:25often times
11:26see us
11:26as different
11:28and judge us
11:29by our skin
11:30as well
11:30so the toll
11:31is quite heavy
11:32and with it
11:33to that
11:34emotional burden
11:35I mean
11:36when we
11:36think about
11:36what happens
11:37when you
11:38have sensitive
11:38skin
11:39for me
11:39as a scientist
11:40it comes down
11:41to having
11:41a healthy
11:42skin moisture
11:43barrier
11:43you already
11:44mentioned
11:45that the skin
11:45fun fact
11:46is the
11:46large
11:47organ in your
11:47body
11:48and you
11:48need to
11:48sit here
11:49and the
11:50moisture
11:50barrier
11:50is the
11:51outermost
11:51layer
11:52that's
11:52protecting
11:53you
11:53from
11:53so from
11:55that
11:55things
11:55are coming
11:56in and
11:56you
11:57can't
11:57put things
11:57in
11:58so now
11:59with that
11:59I want you to
12:00visualize a
12:01brick and mortar
12:01structure
12:02the bricks being
12:03your cells
12:04they're nice
12:05they're healthy
12:05they're plump
12:06and the mortar
12:07being the
12:08shadow by which
12:08water vitamins
12:09and nutrients
12:10flow through
12:11and in and out
12:12to get to
12:12your cells
12:13now when it's
12:14compromised
12:14or unintact
12:16you know
12:17what happens
12:17to all the
12:18bad things
12:18that are going
12:19to come
12:19through
12:19the harmful
12:20rays
12:20the sun
12:21is one
12:22example
12:23other things
12:23are environmental
12:24progressers
12:25such as pollution
12:26and smog
12:27and the last
12:28person I
12:29list is
12:29bacteria
12:30bacteria
12:32is one
12:32thing to
12:32skin diseases
12:33and conditions
12:34such as
12:35acne
12:36and eczema
12:37and we want
12:37to be able
12:38to protect
12:38it
12:39and when
12:39our skin
12:40isn't healthy
12:41what happens
12:41is that's
12:42where you get
12:42the increased
12:43reactions
12:43to your
12:45environment
12:45so the
12:45climate
12:46to
12:46you know
12:47the environment
12:48is the
12:48red stars
12:49and we have
12:50solutions for
12:50you just for
12:51that
12:51so now
12:52in this
12:53we would love
12:54to dive a little
12:55bit deeper
12:55if you want
12:56to talk about
12:57the real world
12:58implications
12:59of your job
12:59you know
13:00it would be
13:01frustrating
13:02not having
13:02a solution
13:03for when
13:04you're going
13:05through the
13:05various stages
13:05of skin
13:06sensitivity
13:07what would
13:08you say
13:08how can
13:08people take
13:09care of
13:09their mental
13:10and emotional
13:10well-being
13:11while going
13:12through some
13:13of these
13:13seasons
13:14with their
13:14skin
13:14you know
13:16Sabrina
13:16I was reading
13:17an article
13:17just a few
13:18weeks ago
13:19and they
13:19talked about
13:20how black
13:21women
13:22how we
13:23are fair
13:24our skin
13:25the way
13:25we dress
13:26it's not
13:26just about
13:27style
13:27it's how
13:28we represent
13:29the culture
13:29would you guys
13:30agree with that
13:30right
13:31right
13:32so
13:33we think
13:33that
13:34where we
13:35hear a lot
13:36about
13:36skin
13:37sensitivity
13:38is in our
13:38diabetes
13:39program
13:40change your
13:40lifestyle
13:41change your
13:41life
13:42and it
13:42really comes
13:43up under
13:44the session
13:44on chronic
13:45stress
13:46intersectionality
13:47and lived
13:48experience
13:49and women
13:50talked about
13:50how different
13:52things that
13:53happen in
13:53their lives
13:54trigger
13:55skin
13:56conditions
13:57but also
13:58there's a
14:00hormone
14:00called
14:01insulin
14:02you all
14:02know about
14:03insulin
14:03insulin
14:04helps
14:05process
14:06the sugar
14:06in your
14:07body
14:08and it
14:09uses it
14:10as energy
14:10if it
14:11doesn't
14:11get used
14:12as energy
14:12it stays
14:13in your
14:13blood
14:14so those
14:15high glucose
14:16levels
14:16can trigger
14:17all kinds
14:19of reactions
14:19including
14:20skin
14:21sensitivity
14:22issues
14:22and diabetes
14:24but women
14:25who have
14:25diabetes
14:26have an
14:26extra challenge
14:27because
14:27diabetes
14:28can dry
14:29out your
14:29skin
14:30and then
14:31it opens
14:31it up
14:31to bacteria
14:34exactly
14:36and so
14:37with this
14:37you know
14:38swishing tears
14:40with this
14:40I know
14:41one of the
14:41cool things
14:42I learned
14:42about your
14:43face
14:43father's
14:44beauty
14:44another
14:45digital
14:45platform
14:46that she
14:46has
14:46a ways
14:47that she
14:48has
14:48and hosts
14:49skin
14:49hair clinics
14:50throughout
14:50the US
14:51so first
14:52I want to
14:53know what
14:53the next
14:54one is
14:54it's for
14:55me
14:55personal
14:55but I
14:56want to
14:57understand
14:58you know
14:58what's
14:59your focus
14:59area
14:59when you
15:00meet
15:00with
15:00women
15:01you can
15:01use
15:02clinics
15:02that you
15:02help
15:03when talking
15:03about
15:04skin
15:04sensitivities
15:05of all
15:05kind
15:05just
15:06worth
15:06experience
15:07to us
15:07yeah
15:08one thing
15:08that we've
15:09noticed
15:09in most
15:10of these
15:10skin
15:10clinics
15:11we did
15:11look in
15:11person
15:12pre-COVID
15:13and then we
15:14started doing
15:14more virtual
15:15events
15:15and the thing
15:16that we
15:16noticed
15:16is that
15:17just the
15:18act of
15:18putting in
15:19the time
15:20and caring
15:20for your
15:21skin
15:21it's such
15:22an emotional
15:22boost
15:23so it's
15:24like I
15:25always compare
15:25it to like
15:26if you go
15:26to the gym
15:27it works out
15:28you know I go
15:28to the gym
15:29and like
15:29we don't
15:30always go
15:31so often
15:31it's like
15:31we let
15:32to the
15:32right
15:32but you
15:33go there
15:33one day
15:34and you're
15:35like
15:35girl
15:36you see
15:37it
15:37right
15:37no you
15:38don't
15:38you feel
15:39it
15:39you think
15:40you see
15:40it
15:40because you
15:41feel it
15:41but it's
15:42also that
15:43you did
15:43something
15:43about it
15:44you didn't
15:44like
15:45you sat
15:45on the
15:46couch
15:46all day
15:47you would
15:47feel
15:47differently
15:48but because
15:48you actually
15:49went to
15:49the gym
15:49you're
15:50really
15:50looking
15:50different
15:51and you
15:52feel it
15:52and it's
15:52the same
15:53thing
15:53that we
15:53find
15:54with
15:54skin
15:54care
15:54and these
15:55clinics
15:55is that
15:55we meet
15:56with women
15:56one-on-one
15:57and in
16:02and despite
16:02the dressing
16:03and showing
16:04them like
16:04these ingredients
16:05work well
16:06for micropigmentation
16:07these are
16:07great sunscreens
16:08and they're
16:09like wow
16:10just that
16:10education
16:11is an
16:11emotional
16:12boost
16:12and then also
16:13the products
16:14that are
16:14starting to
16:14use
16:14the skin
16:15care
16:15so within
16:15a week
16:16of course
16:16skin
16:17is not
16:18going to
16:18change
16:18overnight
16:18but just
16:19the fact
16:19that they're
16:20actually
16:20doing
16:21something
16:21and they
16:21have
16:22a routine
16:22is such
16:23an emotional
16:23boost
16:24such a boost
16:25to their
16:25well-being
16:26yeah I know
16:27it's great
16:27and I think
16:28that the same
16:28thing that are
16:29you know
16:30patient here
16:30is a little
16:31more
16:32that she does
16:33you know
16:33promoting
16:34health promotion
16:35you work on
16:35chronic disease
16:36prevention
16:36as well as
16:37mental health
16:38what are some
16:39of the ways
16:39that you know
16:40those who are
16:41facing chronic
16:41diseases
16:42or chronic
16:43skin diseases
16:43such as
16:44eczema
16:44can advise
16:46them to
16:47you know
16:47kind of
16:47navigate
16:48their health
16:48and wellness
16:49even as
16:49they're going
16:50through some
16:50traumatic
16:51things in
16:51their life
16:52with skin
16:52and disease
16:53at the same
16:54time
16:54well first
16:55of all
16:55it's really
16:56important
16:57that we all
16:57understand
16:58the impact
16:59of chronic
16:59stress
16:59and chronic
17:00means
17:01it lasts a
17:02long time
17:02it's not
17:03forever
17:03so maybe
17:04whatever the
17:05condition is
17:06maybe something
17:06that you're
17:07dealing with
17:07for the rest
17:08of your life
17:09there's a
17:10hormone in
17:12our bodies
17:12called
17:13cortisol
17:13it's also
17:15known as
17:15the stress
17:16hormone
17:17or the
17:17hormone
17:18and so
17:21when women
17:22have repeated
17:23exposures
17:24to stressors
17:25it increases
17:26the cortisol
17:27which cortisol
17:28again
17:29can increase
17:30your glucose
17:30level
17:31so it's
17:32important
17:32that you
17:32understand
17:33how all
17:33these things
17:34remain
17:34and you
17:35may have
17:36more than
17:36one
17:36chronic
17:37condition
17:37so you
17:38need to

18:17it's easy
18:18to say
18:19you should get

18:20rest
18:20it's very
18:22difficult
18:22so I try
18:23to find
18:24these little
18:24pockets
18:25pieces
18:25that I
18:26bring into
18:26my life
18:27I literally
18:27call them
18:28pockets
18:28pieces
18:29it might
18:29be like
18:30a quick
18:30moment
18:31of silence
18:31like if I
18:32could just
18:32sit in silence
18:33like 5 minutes
