00:00I never met a girl like you before.
00:03I think you're extraordinary.
00:05The New York Times tells Sylvie's Love
00:07is a callback to the golden age of Hollywood.
00:09The band got a gig in Paris. Come with me.
00:11I need to be the woman of my dreams, not just yours.
00:14It's genuinely magical and is an undeniably charming romance.
00:20Pleasant experiences ahead. Don't pass it by.
00:23Sylvie's Love. This Christmas.
00:26Only on Prime Video. Rated PG-13.
00:30Tell me about this new boy at the store.
00:34Hey, what's your favorite song, miss?
00:36You don't know what love is.
00:37I am not answering that.
00:39Is he cute?
00:40I didn't really notice.
00:42That much.
00:44My band's playing an eye to nine if you wanna come.
00:50I've never met a girl who knows as much about music as you do.
00:54And television.
00:55Don't get me started.
00:56I've seen every episode of everything.
00:58How was it?
01:00He's extraordinary.
01:06You don't have to go home, but you can't stay here.
01:08Can I walk you?
01:10Life's too short to waste time on things you don't absolutely love.
01:15But how do you know if you love something absolutely?
01:17I guess when it's the only thing that matters.
01:23The band got offered a gig in Paris.
01:25Come with us on tour.
01:27I'm afraid I can't.
01:29But I think you very well could be the next John Coltrane.
01:31What are you gonna be?
01:32What are you gonna be?
01:37If this is life...
01:39WNAT Television.
01:40Telling about the assistant producer position.
01:42Are you married?
01:44Yes.
01:46Hey.
01:47Producer's assistant's not the best job for a housewife.
01:50Why should I hire you?
01:51Why should I hire you?
01:52Because I didn't know that a negro woman television producer even existed.
01:56And all my life that is all I've ever wanted to be.
01:58It's been a long time since I felt the way that I do, yeah.
02:06Robert.
02:07Sylvie?
02:09What are you doing in New York?
02:10Recording an album.
02:12So good to see you.
02:13You too.
02:17You're working.
02:18You're not being a very good hostess.
02:19And what will people say?
02:21I can't be the woman of your dreams while also trying to be the woman of my own.
02:28I guess I just wanted you to be happy.
02:35Even if I couldn't be a part of your life.
02:38Pleasant experiences ahead. Don't pass it by.
02:41Though once I'm done, the number two justice two does always get me dormant and
02:46whatever, but you'll be there that has been wished and
02:52where you're running, getting at least in from those countries and
02:54áng".
02:56Hey, everybody.
02:57My name is Danielle Young, journalist host content, queen.
03:01And I'm so excited to be moderating this lively conversation about friendship
03:06and family traditions this year's holiday celebrations i know it looks a little different
03:12but love is still in the air especially with the fellas of sylvie's love i'm excited i have with me
03:20nandy awesome why hey i have also alano miller what's up i know hey we also have reggae jean
03:32page hey what's up reggae and finally last but certainly not least we have writer
03:40and director of sylvie's love mr eugene ash hey what's that everybody look at me all these
03:48man honey y'all look amazing the rona's been treating y'all well
03:52we just been out running it man
03:57looking good first of all i want to thank all of you for being here um and as we are approaching
04:05the holiday season work usually slows down but i see that like it's just revving up y'all are about
04:14to release sylvie's love like what's the buzz been like so far especially for you nnamdi and eugene
04:19people are very excited about christmas day i was just uh i was just back east uh back at home and
04:27people were just really talking about they know what they're doing christmas day so that's been
04:32very exciting oh that's sweet that's listen that's love when you're involved in the tradition of
04:39christmas because you know we love a good movie on christmas day that's what's up so this year has
04:44been so crazy i'm sure y'all have been self-caring all over the place so tell us how do you self-care
04:50and what are some ways that you've been handling that for yourself and for your family reggae looks
04:57very cozy over there i think he's got the self-care answer
05:00i got my knits going on i got my christmas succulents you know like anything to make your home is your
05:10castle right now and i'm building my castle from the ground up with soft bricks that's that's what
05:15i'm all about right now yeah there you go
05:17i was saying to the guys before we started that i'm just living my best life where i no longer have
05:23to lie not to go to social engagements i'm just like i am government mandated to ignore you right now
05:29i'm gonna stay in my house i'm gonna read those books i've been lying about reading in the past
05:33and actually get them in you know that's the self-care no more lies i'm just living my actual
05:39life i'm telling you living my best life i want reggae how about you talk about the aspect of
05:46friendship within the film and then what ways did you draw from your own friendships um as you
05:53let you go i mean i think that's my primary role in the film is that i am wingman supreme like that's
06:00that's my whole job um and that's pretty much how i operate in life because myself i tend to be
06:04fairly conservative and kind of step back a little bit but i love to wingman i love to push my friends
06:09into the dangerous waters that i don't want to swim in so like you know if i'm out with namdi i'm just
06:13like yo this is namdi he's the best football player you've ever seen the man's like as charismatic
06:17as anyone's ever met and he's also an actor so it's just kind of infuriating trying to live in the
06:22same space man who's got all the talents that i wish i had and then i'll just kind of watch him melt
06:27so i see it like my role in life to see how quickly i can melt my own friends and chico is
06:32very much the same he's always he's all about taking robert this kind of this jazz man who plays
06:37by the rules and saying dude the point of jazz is to let that go and so his job is to jazz him up i'm
06:43the jazz up friend i like that everybody needs a jazz up friend a hype man nightmare i'm gonna say
06:52something real quick eugene said the most important thing this is before we started shooting anything
06:56most important thing with this film is casting and when he met reggae he was like that's chico
07:02i didn't write it for him but this is chico top to bottom and he's showing it right now once you see
07:08game no game he was looking in a mirror
07:12i love that that has to be a good feeling though when you find the person you're like nah
07:20that's who that character is that's gotta be dope um let's get into it with you alano
07:27because you no spoilers um but you play sylvie's husband lacy in the film and your character
07:35deaf oh he challenges her when it comes to being i'm triggered y'all i just when it comes
07:43when it comes to being a career woman versus being a housewife um so i know that that's going
07:51to be a polarizing conversation this holiday so what do you want viewers to learn or to take away from
07:58that specific relationship uh well first context is everything so this is not 2020 so everybody
08:07we're in the 60s remember the time uh and secondly it was a it's a lot of love in that relationship
08:15i know they weren't grand sweeping gestures uh that you may see but they loved each other and uh
08:22he did the best he could to provide for his family in the circumstance that he was in and so i think
08:28that's what i would want human beings uh not all relationships look the same and uh he failed
08:36probably in many ways um but that was the that was the circumstance that was the context yeah and
08:45i definitely wouldn't count him as a bad dude because usually when you hear that kind of stuff
08:48it's like there's some sort of villain um within that i definitely would not count him as such
08:53but i know twitter gonna be stressed out
08:57yeah if i can add something the one thing that alano does a great job of is that
09:04you don't feel like he's like the the twisted mustache bad guy tying people to the train tracks
09:11you know it's it's it's nuanced and you know he leaves with a lot of dignity and you really feel
09:18that it's a nuanced performance of someone you know in in another world this is a choice for sylvie so
09:23he did a really fantastic job of of doing that and keeping us on the edge of our seats like
09:29with the will they want that possible spoiler but being both the husband and the sideman at the same
09:34time that's gotta hurt like i don't even know how you make that reference
09:38my brother saw the trailer and he's you know he's a retired uh from the marines and he was just like
09:50seriously dude seriously yeah man and and i see the pain in your performance there's a there's a
09:57there's a twist it's beautiful music is another character in this film which brings us back to the
10:04holidays because sylvie's love gave us a lot of jazz and jazz reminds you of that holiday spirit that
10:11holiday feeling so what's a song that gets y'all in the holiday season let us know about boys to me
10:18hey that's all right yeah now king calls the christmas song you're just nuts
10:26you know i do a little something something
10:32you know what the a throwback the temptations christmas i was wondering when somebody would see
10:42it that one nice little throwback smooth man i am so ashamed i am just so basic because i don't
10:50want to laugh for christmas yes it's a banger man it's a banger and mariah has given us the go
11:00ahead so it is okay for us to play christmas it's not halloween anymore mariah now
11:06um let's get into some of the manhood showcasing of love in this because um eugene i feel like that
11:21is something that is very apparent in so many of your characters there's a lot of tenderness a lot
11:27of vulnerability what made you decide to create this and also with this perspective uh through the
11:34representation of black men especially as it stands now yeah i mean that was also very important to show
11:43black men being vulnerable it's really it was just kind of bringing it to the pandemic for a minute i
11:51remember just seeing doc rivers crying you know and seeing these black men representing themselves
12:00or vulnerability and the mba was like a really that's not why i did it but it's just i'm just
12:06what i'm trying to say is we need more of that we need to see like that we are not just like made of
12:13stone you know it's important and it humanizes us for people to see that we're vulnerable and that we
12:17have vulnerability and that was really one of the most important things to show in the film to me and
12:23these brothers here just you know knocked it out the park yeah you guys really did nobody's smacking
12:29that person around nobody's really like you know it's not like that doesn't have to be that way you
12:35know for you to still drama and dynamics you know yeah and fellas can y'all tell me too because uh i don't
12:44know if y'all know brene brown but she is an amazing speaker and just human but she says that
12:50vulnerability is power right and as eugene was talking about you know using vulnerability within
12:55this film as black men where did you feel like you needed to tap into to be able to give us that
13:03tenderness and have it be so authentic oh man for me i mean it i mean as a black man as a former
13:13athlete i mean there's so many walls that you put up just growing up i mean i think everyone on this
13:19uh on this meeting has probably heard boys don't cry at some point right or men don't cry even as you
13:26get older um but you know there were a lot of walls for me definitely to break down to just be even
13:33even be able to express myself with someone else uh in a certain way and i think one of the things
13:39eugene did that was so great was it wasn't just about being vulnerable and expressing yourself with
13:47the boys but it was doing that in front of women which is even tougher sometimes for men to just be
13:55able to to tell how you feel and you know what this frustrated me when you did this and you know i
14:00wasn't i wasn't okay with this and and maybe a tear uh is shed but to be able to do that in front of
14:07women you know kudos to him for writing that because you don't see it a lot in any of our
14:13films and you know for these fellas for us to be able to pull that off except for dickie
14:18dickie uh that character i don't i don't know that he was as vulnerable with his woman but uh the
14:26rest of us definitely shout out to tone bell he's not here right now um but he did a wonderful job too
14:31but yeah those are the those were the walls that i had to break down to you know sort of get into
14:37the vulnerability being that all of you originate from different places and all have various
14:43backgrounds namdi you got your nigerian blood i know alano you've got your caribbean blood
14:50um and you reggae jean zimbabwe so can y'all talk about family traditions that are specific to your
14:57family and your heritage and then do you guys uphold those now like what are some of the traditions
15:03that you did as a kid that you still do now uh we would do uh coquito
15:09eggnog with rum but my dad would make the rum and uh so he would you know spend the top of the year
15:22he would start making rum and then we would he would let it mature and then we would use that
15:27rum later i wouldn't get it until i was about 20 21 but uh that was i i really really enjoyed
15:36so he was a bootlegger right and you didn't sip none of it until you were 21
15:43i'm being honest it wasn't until 21 i did have you know he did put it on my gums when i was teething
15:49but other than that
15:50like caribbean pacifier this is how
15:56her brother could get a bottle
16:02like he's still up to it what's up
16:06rolling through no um but yeah that that's that do it drinking that and and doing the uh
16:12the christmas tree decorating the christmas tree is not that i enjoy
16:16anybody anybody else want to share some traditions they keep or they have upheld from childhood
16:22i mean i had uh obviously a multiple mix of cultures i was i was actually born in london
16:27and then grew up in zimbabwe um and so whenever we went home to kumusha to the village in zim
16:33uh chances are somebody's gonna slaughter a cow or two unless people really don't like you
16:37um and so after we'd been home which would normally be like a couple of weeks before christmas
16:41we'd come back with most of like an entire animal like chopped up in various cool bags or whatever
16:47because you can't leave it behind and we'd just be working through this entire cow for like the
16:51next couple of months because you have like those big like human-sized freezers and so the christmas
16:56tradition was just basically we don't waste and so you just wait to see which huge chunk of cow you
17:02were working through today and if it was like a while back then like my dad would get created he'd be
17:07like right okay i know y'all don't like this but we're gonna have cow brain pate today because we
17:11don't waste i admire the creativity um but the guessing game was always just kind of which part
17:19of the cow is gonna be on the table today and unsurprisingly more of a vegetarian these days
17:24wow that is a lot so you learn to be grateful and there's a season for being grateful and that was
17:36the lesson i think that was tried to be imparted there so as we get closer towards the end of the
17:42year taking time out and just cutting everything off becomes so so important so i want to know do you
17:49guys have rules when it comes to cutting it off taking everything and saying you know what
17:56i'm gonna stop working and when you say shutting down what do you mean i mean like not he's like i
18:03think that's the answer right what is not because like is it not answering emails is it not taking on
18:09new gigs is it not reading new scripts like what does it look like for you to stop
18:14um i i mean i don't think i'll be shutting down in that way i wish i could shut down a little bit
18:22more but you know i'm not i'm not i'm not wired that way um i take my breaks during the day but i
18:29don't take breaks i don't take as many day breaks as i need to if that makes sense um but i think you
18:37know it'd be nice to travel but not doing that uh not this year uh so we'll you know i'll be home
18:45you know with the family and and enjoying it i don't i don't plan to shut down at all
18:50so that was i don't know if it's good or bad what about y'all do you guys feel like you have to shut
18:57down towards the end of the season yeah no and what does that look like the business yes
19:03business seems to shut down but uh you know i think like with me i always i i i kind of go
19:12into seclusion and start trying to create new things to to bring out to market or to bring out
19:19you know when it opens back that was this whole year that was this whole year gene that's right
19:24yeah pretty much so i got a lot of stuff ready to go but yeah
19:31it's hard i think it's harder to turn off during the pandemic because there's no
19:38there's no i mean i'm still doing i'm doing like zooms with people on saturdays now that never used
19:44to happen yeah because it's saturday i thought it was monday we don't even know what day it is so
19:51it's kind of hard to you know say okay we're gonna shut down we're lucky enough to be playing
19:56santa claus this christmas though it's a work day for us for a good reason we're bringing sylvie's
20:00love down your chimney you know that's true there you go
20:04that's right this is part of the season dude so just kind of
20:11take you know take the time to settle in for a little bit and you know if you have a loved one
20:18with you which i do you know i just you know a few more date nights a few more times where you can
20:23just kind of cuddle and this is that kind of weather it's that kind of vibe it's that kind of year
20:28um this is you know we're transitioning to hopefully an amazing 2021 so this is how you
20:36it's time it's time it's time that we hibernate for a little bit that's how i do it i just kind
20:41of say you have until three o'clock in the afternoon and then i shut it off and it's just
20:46boundaries i like it is there an activity that y'all do during the holidays with your friends
20:54and family um that you consider special other than cuddles
20:58someone said spades
21:02definitely spades
21:07that's yeah that's a staple i mean the holidays are basically the one time that i actually do come
21:14out of my cave and get vaguely social because i normally go back to london because like christmas
21:19is magical in london london is loud and dirty and new yorky a lot of the time
21:22but like christmas like me and my friends will go ice skating at somerset house because they like
21:27open it up so you have this outdoor ice skate that you can do till like midnight which is gorgeous
21:31and you got like these european christmas markets like you can do the full-on like chestnuts
21:35like get these roasted chestnuts get a hot toddy or like mulled wine do you guys do that here do you
21:39do like hot alcoholic drinks or is that just european
21:42like new york is very much like like london in that way
21:49and you know i don't know if it's going to be open this year but
21:54a little bit of frosted air and a warm drink and kind of walking around the city and just kind of
22:01taking in that little bite in the air but being in your kind of warm-knitted stuff with your friends
22:06and that kind of nice glow that you get from all of these like christmas markets like just taking
22:11in the ambience of that is really lovely when possible less so this year oh you just got me in
22:17the holiday spirit there we go like that was a whole you just had us in a whole vibe um
22:25that's my happy part i'm living in my head you got us there i feel i think i can hear the skates in
22:32the ice um so we talked a little bit earlier about this film being so loving and and very endearing
22:40towards friendship as well and definitely big thread going after your dreams we see that with a lot of uh
22:49the storylines in the in the film so i'm wondering from you eugene what are you hoping that audiences
22:56walk away with after watching sylvie's love really just uh there was something i used to say
23:05um before we started every screening at sundance uh we had several screenings there for the the film
23:13premiere and i would just tell people to to leave their cynicism at the door and to believe in love
23:21again you know sylvie's love is is meant to be like one of those throwback hollywood classic love stories
23:27and so i just want people to really to believe that there's hope in the possibility for love and in all
23:35of its forms not just romantic love but for us each other as a people and you know this has been a
23:41really really tough year and i think it's just the perfect way to end it um with something that
23:47just kind of exalts love so much yeah good point i love that thank you for bringing that to us for
23:56this for the end of what has been a very trying year um before we get out of here let's shake it up a
24:03bit play a little bit of a game um i want to take the holiday traditions conversation a step further
24:10and we'll play this game called holiday meals must-haves okay so i'm gonna need each of y'all
24:17to respond with your favorite choice almost like a you know rapid fire it's gonna be like this or that
24:24y'all ready yeah yeah sweet potato or pumpkin pie sweet potato sweet potato sweet potato
24:31okay okay okay pumpkin pie though pumpkin pie on halloween we do pumpkin pie on halloween here
24:40that's actually good after that yeah fried turkey or baked turkey
24:47baked yeah baked somebody say fried fried from the south
24:53yes but lalano another thing we're doing a fried turkey this year we are too
25:00i'm getting mind shipped in i'm not doing that i'm not even trying
25:11we'd like you to still have some hair when you're done
25:15my father my father-in-law is from south carolina and he's gonna try to do this thing so i'll let
25:22you know i'll let you know how it goes if uh i'm gonna pray on it please pray
25:27we're gonna pray on your household
25:34we're gonna check on you on christmas day just to be sure just to be sure
25:41um okay let's do a couple more biscuits or cornbread cornbread cornbread cornbread yeah
25:49cornbread yeah cornbread jiffy not homemade yeah uh jiffy with the blue box that's what's up
26:00that's that's the you know you can make it people be making it homemade it's like no no
26:05no you need to just go get the box that's right that's right that's right joe's cornbread
26:14it's fire too so i just want that one got the corn in it
26:19just saying
26:20it's gentrified but it hits okay
26:24it hits it hits i feel you alano um now this one is hilarious i already know it's what it's
26:35gonna be collard greens or kale
26:37that's not even a represent like it's not even the same
26:44well you can take it really old school and go mustard greens see my family
26:50so you know now that's a question my question is to try to like catch out the hollywood ops man
26:57plays is like true what about the drinks are we doing sweet tea are we doing iced tea
27:05hmm well el gray anyone earl gray
27:10i don't know about the tea anymore i know gone are the days i used to love it but you know
27:22that diet water do you guys have a diet water definitely i have two more for your this or that
27:36guys mashed potatoes or macaroni and cheese
27:41right that's the one sacrifice we make and we know we can't take dairy
27:48but we still gonna eat the mac and cheese
27:52yeah macaroni and cheese
27:53i mean that's not a sacrifice you make for yourself it's a sacrifice your family make
27:58when you eat the mac and cheese
27:59we all sacrifice
27:59that's a communal suffering
28:03that is
28:03we do together to grow together
28:05it's gotta be that
28:07that cheese you know that cheese
28:10you know the cheese
28:11but you know what i don't like
28:13i don't like the uh
28:16credit
28:17no the whiz the whiz the um
28:20the cheese whiz type of thing
28:21i don't like the i don't like when people
28:23like when it's liquefied instead of being baked
28:26that's right
28:27yeah no that's not that's not real macaroni and cheese
28:33yeah yeah yeah
28:34and you gotta use
28:36you gotta like get it
28:39that's right
28:39that's right
28:40it's like a pie
28:42that's the same thing though
28:53carbs on carbs on carbs
28:56yes
28:57we don't change it up
28:59we don't do the gluten free
29:01we don't
29:02elbows please
29:04some of us have done the work this year
29:16even in the rona to stay cute
29:18so you know that one plate
29:20this one time
29:21i got one
29:22no i got one
