00:00Well, first stop for many Canberrans headed to the coast to JB, Jarvis, or Jervis Bay,
00:08is, of course, the Narragut Hotel.
00:11So I'm going to go check out what the public can fill, what he reckons.
00:14Is it Jervis? Is it Jarvis? I'll go ask him.
00:18Well, I call it Jervis Bay. I grew up listening to my mum calling it Jarvis Bay.
00:22And I used to say that, but I was pretty heavily criticised by the locals there, so it's Jervis now.
00:30It's the same as beef jerky. You wouldn't call it beef jarky, would you?
00:34So I think it's Jervis, because that's how it's spelt, probably.
00:40So is it Jervis or Jarvis?
00:43It's Jervis as in service.
00:45I was originally from Sydney, so in Sydney I always called it Jarvis Bay.
00:50And then we moved here and the children went to school or preschool in Huskerson.
00:55And the first thing that they were taught at preschool in Huskerson was in Jervis as in service.
01:02Growing up on the south coast, lived here for 12 years.
01:06It's always been Jervis.
01:07I've pronounced a Jervis all the way.
01:13Just through sort of relatives pronouncing it that way, I suppose phonetically it looks like Jervis, doesn't it?
01:20Yeah.
01:21But interestingly, my English relatives, when they've just come now, have asked whether it's actually Jervis.
01:27And, yeah, so we had a similar discussion just a couple of days ago about that pronunciation.
01:33So, Diana, is it Jervis or is it Jarvis?
01:37It's definitely Jervis.
01:39Why is it definitely Jervis?
01:41Because it was named after Sir John Jervis, who was a naval officer in the British Navy.
01:47That's him there?
01:48That's him there.
01:49He fought a famous battle in 1797 called the Battle of St. Bedsaint.
01:53Because in 2018, his relative, a nephew, came to the museum to look at some of the artifacts that we had.
02:03And he confirmed that the family name is definitely pronounced Jervis.
02:07And he had a striking resemblance to Sir John Jervis.
02:11Do you get many people come in here and say, and ask, how do you pronounce where we are?
02:16All the time.
02:17Okay.
02:17And do most tourists think it's Jervis or is it about half-half?
02:22Oh, I think most people say Jervis first, but then they're uncertain because English language has some of those anomalies.
02:29Yeah.
02:30Yeah.
02:37Yeah.
02:38Yeah.
02:39Yeah.
02:39Yeah.
02:40Yeah.
