00:00Hey, I'm Dr. Rachel Ross from the Dr. Rachel Institute, and I'm so excited to be here at
00:10Essence Fest, and I'm going to be bringing you some information about sexual wellness.
00:16Okay, so let's just get right into it. So our first question comes from Michelle Johnson
00:21out of Denver, Colorado. Her question reads, how do women prepare for sex during menopause?
00:27Love it. Great question. Well, the first thing to think about when you're going through menopause
00:32is, first of all, don't fear it. Just embrace it. But the other piece is to know that when you're
00:37going through menopause, the lining of your vagina is going to kind of what we call atrophy or thin
00:43out. So what you want to do is make sure you have a really great lube close by that you use, that
00:50you've tried, that you've tested, and you know it's not going to irritate you even more. The second
00:54piece to that is to know that aging is 100% natural. And I say it all the time, ladies,
01:01if you're having hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, and it's impairing your life, talk to
01:07your doctor about bioidentical hormones. We know for a fact now that adding a little estrogen into
01:14our lives as we go on, kind of taking us back to our 30s when we're in our 50s, actually has major
01:19health benefits. Okay. Great question. The other question comes from Clara Andrews out of 96 South
01:27Carolina. That is the town. All right. What precautions should you take to protect yourself
01:33during COVID-19? Very great. So having sex in COVID-19, I want you to take the same precautions
01:39we took in 2019. Now that COVID-19 is here, right? What are those precautions? One, we're using condoms.
01:48We're getting people tested for STDs and STIs and HIV and all that good stuff before we even consider
01:54not using condom, but taking it one step further, making sure that the people that we let down here
02:00and up here and all that actually deserve to be there. There's nothing more damaging to your psyche,
02:05to your ongoing progress as it is to actually, you know, orgasm with somebody who means you know
02:11earthly good, right? And believe me, there's some science in that. Google it. Okay. So the other piece
02:16about COVID-19 is, you know, I'm excited because you actually get a chance to slow down and get to
02:23know somebody a little bit before you decide to have sex because you're worried. Does this person have
02:27COVID? Do they have HIV? You know, we've got all these worries. So now we're slowing it down. We're waiting
02:32to see if they quarantine and come out of it without COVID. And then you can actually meet them
02:36and consider whether or not they're worthy of your time to have sex with in the first place.
02:41Yay. All right. So the other question, this is my last question. Wonderful question comes from Alana
02:47out of Nashville. The quarantine wiped my sex drive completely. How can I get my groove back? Love
02:55this question. Well, the first part to getting your groove back is understanding that like sex eventually,
03:02after you've been with someone for long enough, it actually is like the gym, right? We may not really
03:07want to go, but we know that when we get there, we're going to enjoy it, right? So what you can kind
03:13of do to wake that area back up is so we've been stressed. We've been sitting there. Masturbate. Get
03:19a really nice vibrator, some great lubricant. Turn on your favorite movie, read your favorite sex book,
03:25you know, some erotica, some zane, and go ahead and put the vibrator on there. Think sexual thoughts
03:31and really start getting your clitoris and your vagina back thinking about sex before you go
03:37back to having sex. And you would be surprised. Studies show that the more we play with it down
03:43there, the more we actually feel like doing it down there. All right. So I'm Dr. Rachel. Follow
03:48me at Dr. Rachel, D-R-R-A-C-H-A-E-L. And for those of you who want to be sexologists, head over to the
03:54Dr. Rachel Institute because we've got a program to train you to do just that. See you later, Essence.
03:59Thanks.
