00:00Come, Badawan. Your fall will be my ascension to the Sith.
00:06If you're a Star Wars fan, you've no doubt heard terms like Dark Jedi and Sith,
00:10and may even be able to attach these labels to certain characters of the franchise.
00:14However, these labels can be thrown around quite a bit, and it can be a bit confusing trying to discern the differences between the two.
00:20Hopefully this video will clarify any confusion you may have, and it will debunk some of the incorrect information circulating around the internet regarding these two types of Force users.
00:30Before we get too deep into the differences, let's compare the similarities.
00:34Obviously these are two types of people that both must be Force-sensitive, otherwise they would not be able to wield their unique powers.
00:41Both of these types of Force users draw the vast majority of their power from the dark side of the Force.
00:45As such, they are often granted very similar abilities that they can utilize, Force Lightning being one example.
00:51These sorts of powers are possible for both of these Force users because they are primarily driven by similar desires and emotions.
00:58These include things such as hate, ambition, lust for power, anger, and immense passion.
01:04Due to their attunement to the dark side, they often share the same boons and effects from their exposure.
01:10These include things like the classic yellow eyes, and access to even more powers similar to the ones I had mentioned earlier.
01:17Now that we've gotten the similarities out of the way, let's discern the differences.
01:22Dark Jedi usually come about in two different ways.
01:25The first and most common being that the Force user was once a member of the Jedi Order, taught to use the light side of the Force and uphold the Jedi ideals.
01:32Whether through their conscious decision to reject the light side, or through a slow but gradual degradation in their morality,
01:38they eventually fell from grace and became an agent of the dark side.
01:42The second way is that a Force user was discovered by a dark Jedi, and was taken and groomed to fit this archetype before even having been exposed to other pathways.
01:51As such, a manifestation as a dark Jedi was chosen for them, and they never really had a choice.
01:57Those who fall under the title of this Sith, such as Anakin Skywalker, have much more specific requirements.
02:03The Sith isn't just a name for someone who uses the dark side.
02:06It refers to the ancient Sith race's culture and doctrines of its order, and is such as molded by traditions that go back thousands and thousands of years before the times of the movies.
02:15In the times of the Old Republic, and even before, many people were born under the ancient Sith Empire, and as such were trained to live that sort of lifestyle.
02:23However, the Sith we see in the movies that take place thousands of years after this time, do not live under the Sith Empire of old.
02:30However, they still become a Sith by surrendering themselves to a Sith Lord or Sith Holocron's teachings, and consequently identify with the culture, the code, and the goals associated with the ancient order.
02:41Your sad devotion to that ancient religion has not helped you conjure up the stolen datatapes.
02:47We're giving you clairvoyance enough to find the rebels hidden for you.
02:51I find your lack of faith disturbing.
03:01When Anakin Skywalker fell from the dark side, he surrendered himself to the teachings of Dark Sidious, a Sith Lord.
03:07This is what allows him to identify as a Sith rather than just a dark Jedi.
03:11However, if he instead rejected Dark Sidious's offers, and went on to meet his own goals through the power of the dark side by its own means, he would have been considered a dark Jedi.
03:21Qui-Gon Jinn's fallen apprentice, Exanatus, was one who fell to the dark side and pursued his own desires without ever coming into contact with any Sith influence, and as such would be considered a dark Jedi.
03:32Now there are some dark Jedi factions out there, such as the Disciples of Ragnos, who do form an order of sorts, so not all dark Jedi are lone wolves or just made of small groups.
03:44Disciples of Ragnos were a large group of dark Jedi who worshipped an ancient Sith Lord, sought to resurrect him in order to take over the galaxy and then ascend into true Sith Lords themselves.
03:53However, because they had no real training under the Sith, they are not referred to as such, regardless of their goals to resurrect one.
04:01So in conclusion, the Sith identify and train under the ancient culture and code of the ancient Sith race, whereas dark Jedi do not, and are simply users of the dark side.
04:11I hope this was coherent enough to give a good explanation, and that anyone who was confused before had had an easier time identifying the differences.
04:18Soon I'll be making a video explaining where the new upcoming villain, Kylo Ren, fits in, so subscribe to stay tuned on that future video.
04:26Thanks for watching, and may the Force be with you.
