00:00Charon tells the Morning Edition the business sector has no objection to strong security measures,
00:06noting that crime has reached a level where decisive intervention is unavoidable.
00:12While acknowledging concerns raised in the Upper House,
00:15he believes the Zoso legislation would have strengthened national efforts to restore order.
00:21We saw it as more police presence in hotspot areas, more focus on hotspot areas.
00:27And we didn't see it from the perspective that many people saw it from,
00:32which was, you know, you're stigmatizing these areas.
00:36These areas are, you know, where you put Zoso, people wouldn't go.
00:40I don't believe that. You know why? Because we all know where the rough areas are.
00:43He further points to what he describes as a gap on the independent bench,
00:48saying it lacks direct representation from the business community.
00:53Charon argues that business owners operate on the front lines,
00:56sharing the same spaces as employees and customers, witnessing the realities of crime firsthand.
01:04Why has nobody approached anybody in business, no man from no chamber,
01:07no woman from no chamber, to say, would you like to be an independent senator?
01:12Would you like to join the Senate?
01:14And do you not think that it is about time that if one of us was in the Senate,
01:18right, we would have, we would be able to put forward, you know,
01:23our view on things that actually affect us, because it is we on the ground, Marlon.
01:28According to the chairman, criminal activity has escalated beyond acceptable limits,
01:35creating fear and instability across communities and bookplaces.
01:39And he believes firmer enforcement and consequences are necessary to reverse that trend.
01:46You're getting zip-tied, beaten to a pulp, people totally lie down on the ground,
01:52they're getting shallow stab wounds all over their skull.
01:55There's elements of torture, assault, terrible things that happen.
01:59So from my perspective, right, I want and we want a harder take on crime.
02:05Separately, he says, he supports greater accountability within the police service,
02:10including the use of body cameras, which he views as a tool to protect both officers and citizens,
02:17while reinforcing public trust.
