01:53So let's get started.
01:55Now, I don't know about you, but I am constantly obsessing about how to boost my immune system, especially right now.
02:01So we brought Dr. Lauren Powell, the culinary doctor from Atlanta, Georgia.
02:06Hi, Dr. Lauren.
02:06Good morning.
02:07Hey, good morning.
02:08Get us together.
02:10Good morning.
02:11Good morning.
02:12Thanks so much for having me.
02:13Thank you so much for being here.
02:15Now, I know that you are getting all of the questions about immune systems, particularly right now.
02:21So let's just talk basics.
02:22What should we know and understand about boosting our immune systems right now?
02:27So this is super important because coronavirus is a virus, which means the most powerful defense we have is our immune system.
02:36This is not a bacterial infection, so antibiotics aren't going to do much at all.
02:41Right.
02:42So empowering our immune system, there's so many things that we can do.
02:45But the first thing I want to start out with is food.
02:47It's important that we're eating whole foods, plant-based foods.
02:54And, you know, I know people may have different thoughts about that.
02:57I'm not asking people to become vegans, but I'm just saying add more whole foods and vegetable plant-based foods to your diet.
03:04But it's hard because we're all at home now.
03:07The kids are at home.
03:08We're working from home.
03:09And so it might be easier to snack, to grab the frozen stuff.
03:12Oh, yeah.
03:13To grab the processed stuff, to still go through the drive-thrus because Burger King now delivers for free.
03:18But this is the time more than ever that we want to make sure that we're just fueling our immune system with the best things possible.
03:25An easy way to do that is I always ask people to eat the rainbow.
03:29So when you look at your plate, you should have multiple colors.
03:32And that means that you're getting a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, which is what we need.
03:36We need lots of vitamins.
03:37We need lots of minerals.
03:38We need lots of antioxidants.
03:40And we need lots of fiber.
03:42So those things are going to be super important.
03:44Let's talk about your basic grocery list.
03:46I know shopping is a bit difficult for some of us right now, but most of us are making it out to stock up and kind of one-trip run.
03:53What are things we should definitely be grabbing, putting in our carts, and making sure that we have to cook with and eat daily?
04:00So, you know, it's surprising because when I've gone to the grocery store, which I still go once, you know, about once a week or once every 10 days,
04:06I'm amazed at all the fresh stuff that's still there.
04:09Like, you can't find any canned goods.
04:12But there still seems to be a lot of fresh stuff.
04:14So I do feel like this is a time where you want to have that nice soup and things if you don't feel well.
04:20But grab the fresh stuff and make soup at home and then freeze it, which is kind of what I've been doing.
04:25And then that way, if you're not feeling well, if you can't get out, you can take those things out that were made fresh without preservatives.
04:30So, like, in my household, I'm always going to get a fresh thing of some kind of lettuce so that I'm having salads.
04:35Whatever vegetables I want, I'm going to grab those.
04:38And, again, I'm eating a rainbow, so I'm going to get tomatoes.
04:40I'm going to get different bell peppers.
04:42I'm going to get cucumbers.
04:43Things that just have different colors.
04:46I'm going to make sure I get my vitamin C.
04:48And vitamin C is best absorbed through food.
04:50So every day I'm eating a navel orange, right?
04:52We'd rather eat our vitamin C than drink our vitamin C.
04:55I know you and I talked about this the other day.
04:57Yeah, you told me that orange juice I've been drinking, you guys, every morning feeling really good about myself is not necessarily the best move.
05:05Can't hurt, but it's not helping.
05:07Yeah, it's just I'd rather my patients not be drinking orange juice unless they're making it themselves because oftentimes there's just a lot of sugar in it.
05:15And so I'd rather you eat the orange because you're getting the vitamin C, but plus you're getting nutrition.
05:19You're getting some fiber.
05:21You're getting some vitamin A.
05:22Like you're just getting more stuff than if you were to just drink the orange juice.
05:25You're going to have a big spike in your in your blood sugar.
05:27Right.
05:27That's why we tell diabetics that their sugar is ever low.
05:29Take a swig of orange juice because immediately it's going to jump up your blood sugar.
05:33So at home, just make sure you have a wide variety of stuff.
05:36Keep your canned goods, of course, because those can be stored for a long time, but still grab fresh fruits and vegetables.
05:42They're still available.
05:43And as long as they're there, let's grab them and let's utilize them.
05:46Well, I'm glad we're talking about fruits and vegetables because I've seen a lot of people legitimately afraid.
05:52to grab those things because, right, we don't know how the virus is spread.
05:56You know, people are touching these things at the grocery store.
05:59So talk to us a little bit about the best way to clean the fruits and vegetables and just make sure that we're eating them, but safely.
06:06Right.
06:06So I've been washing my fruits and vegetables like a baby, like legit soap and water.
06:11Scrub those things down.
06:13I mean, I knew normally if I was going to eat an apple, I'd probably just rinse it under the water.
06:17But at this point, I think it's good to, you know, wash it with soap and water, dry it off.
06:21Remember, a lot of our vegetables, you know, with soups and things, we're going to be cooking them, which is, you know, also great.
06:27But I think just washing things with soap and water is great.
06:29I think if you can use your own reusable bags in the grocery store, I think that would be great, too, simply because there's been some studies about the virus surviving on different surfaces.
06:39One of those surfaces includes plastic.
06:42And so if you think about the plastic bags at the grocery store and how many hands have touched that.
06:45So if you can bring your own bags.
06:47And honestly, what I do, I go in with my reusable bags.
06:50I put my groceries in that bag.
06:51I let them ring and I put them back in that bag because now I'm minimizing all the different surfaces that my stuff has touched.
06:56The reusable bag, that's a good tip I hadn't thought about.
07:00You know, I think we're just trying to get like in and out.
07:03So that reusable bag, that's a gem.
07:05So what else are your what are your patients asking you specifically when they come in right now during this time about like immune systems and staying safe?
07:14Right. So the main thing is everybody is kind of going on the Internet and they're buying these different things.
07:19And they're asking me, is this safe to take is, you know, they found some, you know, coronavirus medication on Amazon.
07:26And they want to know if they can take it.
07:28So I'm always appreciative of those questions because I do want to know if my patients are taking any supplements.
07:35Because while they are supplements or while they're considered natural and I put in this in quotes, they can still interact with different medications if the patient is on some some chronic medications.
07:45So I do want to know what my patients are taking.
07:48And so I think the biggest thing is people want to take something, you know, it's just they see a problem.
07:53They want to take something. And so they want to know, Doc, what can I take?
07:55And what I remind them is this is like any virus.
07:58So what do we do during, you know, cold and flu season?
08:01We feed our body well. We sleep well.
08:05You know, you take your vitamin C, you eat a good diet, you get your rest, you exercise.
08:09Like those are the things that I that I want them to not forget.
08:13So let's talk about the vitamins, because like you said, we're all shopping online.
08:18If you search vitamin supplements, vitamin cocktail, everything comes up and promises to boost your immune system.
08:25So one, I'm asking, what should we be buying and what shouldn't we buy?
08:29Shouldn't we be buying? And also, is there such thing as too much?
08:32Because I'm seeing people take handfuls of vitamins right now.
08:37Yeah, there definitely is a thing of too much.
08:39Like I've had patients wanting to take high doses of stuff, but then I check their levels and they're so high.
08:44So I do want people to know that, you know, there is such thing as too much of a good thing.
08:48So you don't want to just be taking overdose levels of vitamin C or vitamin D or zinc.
08:54And like, you know, we still want to be safe.
08:56So in general, I want my patients taking a general multivitamin.
09:00I think sometimes we'll take a B-complex, we'll take these different things, but we're just not taking a multivitamin that includes all the basic vitamins and minerals.
09:08As I mentioned to you, and actually I started taking this yesterday.
09:11If I feel like, you know, just my body is just doing something or if like my kids are, I don't have kids, but if I had kids and my kids started looking like they were being sick,
09:20and I know that means it's coming for me, I like to take what's called an EZC pack.
09:24And this is a pack that's already made, but obviously you can piece this together and it has echinaceous zinc and vitamin C.
09:29And so those are just good immune supporting vitamins.
09:33And it's a nice boost to your immune system.
09:36And so those are generally the ones that I'm recommending.
09:40Is there anything in particular we should be looking for when we're taking vitamins and multivitamins in terms of like something, an ingredient that shouldn't be in it,
09:48any kind of obvious warning signs, or should we just start with talking to a doctor?
09:52I think you should talk to a doctor.
09:54You also want to look at the ingredients, right?
09:57So if I'm taking a vitamin C supplement, when I read those ingredients, it should say vitamin C or ascorbic acid, which is another word for vitamin C.
10:05It shouldn't have a whole bunch of other words there because sometimes there's additives, there's preservatives, there's just other stuff in them.
10:12And those are the things as doctors that we worry about because these things are not, supplements are not FDA regulated.
10:17So I could create a supplement in my, you know, in my kitchen and call it Dr. Powell's immune solving solution and go contract with, you know, GNC and have them sell it in their store.
10:28So these things aren't being regulated.
10:30So that's why as physicians, we're always wanting our patients to have a conversation with us.
10:34Bring me your supplements when I see you, if we're doing a teledoc, you know, show me what they look like that way, because you may think it's one thing, but then we just have to be concerned and cognizant of other things that may be in it.
10:46So that means everyone is great as these text chains and group chats have been with like, I'm taking this, I'm taking that.
10:52Just call your doctor, all right, or your local pharmacist, pharmacists.
10:56Yeah, the local pharmacists are great.
10:58Pharmacists are great for this too.
11:00This is what, this is what they're there for.
11:02So if you go and, you know, if you're taking a blood pressure medication and you're going to pick it up, bring some of your supplements with you and say, hey, you know, I take this blood pressure medicine.
11:11Is it okay that I'm also taking these supplements?
11:13And that's what they're an expert in.
11:15They're an expert in medication and interactions and all that stuff.
11:19So ask before you buy.
11:20I love it.
11:21That's important.
11:22I'm glad we're stressing that because I think people, fear can make people do a lot of different things.
11:27And things that we think are helping our bodies are often hurting them.
11:31So I'm glad.
11:32And they're just unnecessary.
11:34Right, because if you take too many vitamins, I've read that like they don't even absorb.
11:39So you're not necessarily getting the benefit.
11:42And they're expensive.
11:44Like you'll go ahead and you'll spend all this money on stuff and it's really not really doing anything.
11:48So I think before we waste our money, our time, and potentially do something that can be harmful, like let's have a conversation about it.
11:56And that's completely appropriate.
11:58So outside of our grocery list and our vitamin list, let's talk about, you and I are always talking about rest, you know, and how we're all so hard and we're not sleeping.
12:08But now we all have no excuse not to just go to bed.
12:12So can you talk about the effects of like rest and exercise on our immune system and how to kind of make sure we're getting the most out of that?
12:17Sure.
12:18So sleep is very important to immune function.
12:22If you're not sleeping, your cortisol levels, which is a stress hormone, can be kind of out of whack.
12:28And it really alters your immune system ability to function.
12:33So it's really critical that people go to sleep.
12:36And it's harder now, I think, because the kids aren't in school and we may not have as much structure.
12:40But we still have to, we have to create the structure.
12:43So that means going to bed at a certain time.
12:45That means 90 minutes before you go to sleep, stopping those devices.
12:49Because that's, sometimes if we are on our devices, it can hyperstimulate our pineal gland and it can just make it hard to fall asleep.
12:56So, you know, stopping your electronic devices about 90 minutes before bed, going to sleep at least seven to eight hours.
13:04You know, sometimes my patients ask me, how do I know if I'm getting enough sleep?
13:07When you wake up in the morning, you should feel rested.
13:10You know, it should be this, oh, like life is good.
13:14It's like you're in a commercial.
13:15Like that's how you should feel.
13:17You shouldn't wake up like, oh, God, oh, I'm still tired.
13:20I wish I could get back.
13:21You know, you shouldn't feel that way.
13:23You should feel rested.
13:26So sleep is super important.
13:28Yeah, sleep is critical.
13:29You know, to be completely honest, I'm sorry, last night I was not feeling well.
13:32Like I was feeling a little nauseous.
13:33I had a headache.
13:34I said, you know what, I need to get to bed.
13:35And so I went to bed at 8.30 and I woke up this morning and I felt like a new person.
13:39And I knew that I would.
13:40I told my office, I'm like, listen, I'm going to go to sleep and I'm going to feel like a newborn baby in the morning.
13:44Like this is just, I know.
13:45Like I know my body and you have to be able to listen and recognize that.
13:48So sleep is super and critical.
13:49At least seven to eight hours a night.
13:51You know, I don't care that you don't have anywhere to go in the morning.
13:54You need to, you know, you need seven to eight.
13:56And then don't let yourself sleep 10 to 12 hours either because then it's going to be harder to go to sleep at night.
14:00So let's stick to a schedule.
14:02Wake up.
14:03You should feel rested.
14:04And then exercise is the other thing you pointed on.
14:07Moving our bodies is so important.
14:09If we can move outside, you know, so, you know, practice social distancing with, you know, six feet of distance between you and somebody else.
14:16But exercise is a great release of endorphins, which are great for your mood.
14:20Getting sunlight is great.
14:22I mean, that's how we're getting vitamin D.
14:24So I think it's important.
14:25And you just need to get out of the house.
14:26Like we just need to get out of the house.
14:28Especially if you're in a house with other people.
14:30It's a little bit.
14:30Like, yes, we do.
14:34We need to just do it.
14:36Like there's no reason why we shouldn't be taking at least 20 minutes every day to get up and go for a walk around.
14:43You know, even if you're just making laps around your block, even if you're moving inside and doing some of these home workouts like we've got going on later on today with Essence.
14:50So we need to be moving every day.
14:52That super exercise is very important for the proper functioning of the immune system.
14:56And I'm happy that we're emphasizing all of these things, the sleep and the working out.
15:02And I'm happy that you mentioned not sleeping too much.
15:05Because I know I personally, I wasn't getting enough sleep.
15:08And now I'm getting, it's like a drug.
15:10I'm like, sleep is amazing.
15:12You know, and it's making me feel great.
15:13It feels so good.
15:14It's so good.
15:15But I'm so happy that you mentioned that because I hadn't thought about too much, especially on the weekends.
15:20I think people are sleeping to beat the anxiety, you know, sleeping to pass the time.
15:25And so we want to make sure we're getting, you're saying the right amount, not too much.
15:29Right.
15:30Not too much.
15:31And I think sometimes when we oversleep, we're catching up from being sleep deprived earlier in the week.
15:35And so if we can just make a concerted effort to just sleep well every day.
15:43And, you know, one of the things I'm challenging my patients to do is, I know it's counterintuitive to think, but this should be the time where we just try to get our health in the best shape possible.
15:52Because we have the time and mental capacity to prioritize it.
15:56And I think after this pandemic, you know, how we value health never be the same.
16:04And so now more than ever, we need to figure out how can I make sure I'm taking care of myself on a regular basis, right?
16:09The people that we're most concerned about with COVID are those with pre-existing conditions.
16:13And so making sure your health is in tip top is everything.
16:20And I think now more than ever, we need to take advantage of this opportunity we have to kind of invest in ourselves.
16:27I love that.
16:28And you are giving us so many tips and ways to do that.
16:31And I think, like you said, let's be honest, we have the time.
16:34And speaking of time, I think people are doing a lot of Googling.
16:38You know, we joke, Dr. Google, you guys, we have a real doctor here right now.
16:44And I think it's important that you talk a little bit, if you don't mind, about making sure that when we're taking the time to figure out what we want to do and focus on our health, that we're going to the right resources and places.
16:55Yes.
16:56So if people are sitting down and saying, okay, I'm going to focus on my health and what I'm eating and all of that, aside from calling their doctor, what resources do you recommend for getting correct information right now?
17:07Right.
17:08See, we do have to look at the sources.
17:09Because, again, anybody can publish anything on the Internet.
17:12So I think there's a lot of, you know, physicians and medical providers, medical experts that are, you know, using their social media platforms to explore and express information.
17:23And I think that's a great place.
17:25Obviously, the CDC is going to be great information that is, you know, regulated and is going to be a good source for information.
17:32You know, just be careful about these texts that we're getting.
17:35You know, I've got some texts.
17:36If you drink water and you can push the virus to your stomach, it will kill it.
17:41I saw that one.
17:42I was like, what the fuck?
17:44Like, those are two different pipes.
17:45I was like, is that true?
17:46And some of them sound really realistic.
17:50I mean, some of them sound believable.
17:51So it's good, again, to ask your doctor.
17:53I know.
17:54But my mom actually sent that to me.
17:56And I was like, Mom, coronavirus is affecting your respiratory symptom, your respiratory system.
18:01That's a different hole than when you're drinking water.
18:05When you drink water, that goes down your esophagus.
18:07If water is going down your windpipe, you're choking.
18:11Like, that's not, it doesn't even, from an anatomy perspective, make sense.
18:16So we do have to be mindful about some of these things.
18:19And if they sound too good, like you can drink water to kill a virus, then it probably is not the most legitimate form of information.
18:26So we do have to kind of just think about some of these things.
18:29And people are, unfortunately, using this time to kind of prey on people's fears and emotions and kind of run with that.
18:36So I would say, you know, look at the source that you're getting the information from.
18:40Definitely trust your medical providers.
18:42Definitely trust the CDC.
18:44And if you have questions about something, reach out to your doctor.
18:46Like, I have patients all the time that, you know, we're utilizing telehealth.
18:50I know a lot of medical systems are converting to that.
18:53Or we have email access.
18:54Like, feel free to ask a question because that's what we're here for.
18:58And I'm so glad that you brought up the myth about drinking water and washing the virus down to your stomach.
19:03Because I know, like you said, we've been getting a lot of these messages.
19:07Do you mind talking about a few more that aren't true?
19:10Like, can we do some myth busting together this morning?
19:14So another one that I've gotten is about the, you know, black folks or, you know, if you're from the islands, like, you can't get the virus.
19:22So I'm trying to think.
19:24I don't really know where exactly that myth even started.
19:27I don't know if because we were first, you know, just seeing it on the news more in Caucasus.
19:32Like, I just don't really know where that came from.
19:34But totally not true.
19:37We are, as African Americans, we are strong people.
19:40But let me tell you, we are still susceptible to this virus.
19:43And to be completely transparent, Ms. Charlie, I'm most concerned about my minority patients because oftentimes they're the ones to begin with that have, that are experiencing health disparities.
19:55They're the ones that have decreased access to health to begin with.
19:58They're the ones that have uncontrolled chronic medical conditions.
20:02So I'm most concerned about my minority patients because they're the ones more likely to have uncontrolled diabetes, uncontrolled, you know, heart failure or blood pressure.
20:12And we know we are most concerned about our patients who have pre-existing conditions.
20:17And so total myth, being Black is a beautiful thing, but I'm sorry, it will not make you resistant to this virus.
20:26So please practice all precautions, you know, like we all need to.
20:31And for people with pre-existing conditions, this is why we're having this conversation this morning, because boosting your immune system in that case is even more important.
20:40And you can be doing something every day at home.
20:43Exactly.
20:43And if you have pre-existing conditions, like, don't ignore them.
20:47Like, this is not the time for you to just be like, whatever to my diabetes, I'm worried about coronavirus.
20:50No, listen, you have diabetes right now.
20:52You don't have coronavirus right now.
20:54You have diabetes right now.
20:54So let's make sure that whatever conditions we do have, we're staying on top of them.
20:58My dad is notorious for skipping his medications or twice a day.
21:02He's notorious for skipping his second dose at the end of the day.
21:06This is not the time for you to just be willy-nilly with your chronic medical conditions, because number one, you may not be able to access your doctor as easily as you had before.
21:15So I need you to be on your own health.
21:18And then number two, again, we want your diseases as controlled as possible.
21:22So please take your medications if you have a diagnosis and you're supposed to be taking them.
21:26If you have questions about those medications, if you have questions, like, reach out to your doctor.
21:30Do not abruptly stop stuff.
21:32And, yeah, please have a conversation.
21:35Absolutely.
21:35Dr. Lauren, we have two questions from the audience that we want to make sure we have time to give you.
21:40Are you ready?
21:41Yes, ma'am.
21:42All right, let's do it.
21:44How can I super boost my immune system today if I think I'm getting sick?
21:51So, again, what we talked about, the EZC path, that is something that I love, and that's Echinacea, Zinc, and Vitamin C.
21:56It comes in a little pack that you can get on Amazon or at the pharmacy.
21:59But, again, if you can't get the pack, you can always just take some Echinacea, Zinc, and Vitamin C over the counter.
22:04Make sure you're putting good stuff in your body.
22:07During this time, I mean, usually I'm always drinking green juice.
22:11I love green juice because you're just getting so many vitamins and minerals and so many antioxidants.
22:16So, you know, putting the raw stuff in your body, whether you're cooking it or whether you're drinking it, is going to be great.
22:23Getting your sleep.
22:24That's something that you can be doing right now, like we talked about.
22:27So, managing your stress.
22:30Stress is super important because stress, again, affects your cortisol levels, which compromise your immune system.
22:34So, for me, the best way that I'm managing my stress is how I start my day and how I end my day.
22:41Starting your day with gratitude.
22:42Starting your day, you know, not on social media, even if it's just for 10 or 15 minutes.
22:47Makes a difference.
22:48It just puts your mind in a different place.
22:50So, just make sure you're taking care of your body.
22:53You know, like, think about what we do when we were kids.
22:57When we weren't feeling good, our mommas would give us some soup and tell us to go to bed.
23:01And so, that's what we need to be doing now.
23:04Absolutely.
23:05Okay, next one.
23:06I've been taking apple cider vinegar shots daily to ward off the virus.
23:10Is that helping?
23:12Maybe.
23:13You know, apple cider vinegar has a lot of medicinal benefits.
23:17I don't know if it's the end-all, be-all.
23:20I don't think it will hurt you.
23:22So, I think, overall, if you want to take a shot of apple cider vinegar, it definitely won't hurt you.
23:28I've taken a shot of apple cider vinegar before.
23:30It's really good for digestion.
23:32So, it has a lot of medicinal benefits.
23:34It's good for headaches.
23:34It's good for allergies.
23:35So, definitely, if you want to take it, sure.
23:38I don't think it will hurt you.
23:39I don't know if it's going to do everything we need to do in order to ward off the virus.
23:45But it's definitely something that you can add to the arsenal of things that you do in conjunction with the sleep and the good food and managing your stress and exercising.
23:53And we know we all grew up with a big bottle of apple cider vinegar, like, on the counter.
23:58Always.
23:58Like, that is the black experience.
24:00And lastly, I've heard cooking with garlic daily can help.
24:05Is that true?
24:07You just said gargling with garlic?
24:08Garlic, cooking with garlic daily, can that help?
24:12Garlic has a lot of medicinal benefits, and it tastes amazing.
24:16I put garlic in everything that I make.
24:18And when you were talking about the apple cider vinegar, I don't always drink it, but I make all my salad dressing with apple cider vinegar.
24:23So, food is medicine.
24:26And so, adding these things to your diet can only help you.
24:31Like, there's no harm in adding garlic to your food.
24:33There's no harm in adding apple cider vinegar to your food.
24:35So, yes, do these things because they could potentially, in conjunction with other things, help you.
24:42So, why not?
24:43We have them at our disposal.
24:44There's no harm with adding garlic.
24:45I think you just got to worry about your breast smell in a certain kind of way.
24:48But, other than that, there's no harm in it.
24:52I would encourage you to do it.
