00:00Oh, yeah.
04:03Hi.
04:05I am Corey Murray, the Entertainment Director at Essence Magazine.
04:07And I don't know about you all, but in addition to my day job, I have been helping my little
04:14one who's 10 with her remote learning.
04:15But we need something to kind of shake up to the day because she's really good about learning
04:20on her own and doing her reading.
04:22But I really wanted to call on an expert to do some fun, science-filled DIY projects that
04:28we could do right here in our house.
04:30And who else could I call on but Rosalyn Daniels, who is a lifestyle expert and the queen of content
04:36creation and this beautiful kitchen that she's about to show us.
04:40So please, Rosalyn, introduce yourself and tell us all of the projects we're going to learn today.
04:45Hi, everyone.
04:47I'm Rosalyn Daniels with RosalynDaniels.com.
04:50And today I am here to show you some of my favorite DIY projects that I do with my kids.
04:56And I know that you guys are going to love doing them with yours.
05:00So something that I love about doing these projects is the fact that they keep your kids
05:06entertained, especially while we are on quarantine right now, we want to keep our kids busy as
05:11long as possible and they help stimulate their brains, they can help with their motor skills.
05:18And another thing about these DIY projects is it gives you the opportunity to reinforce
05:23your cleanliness habits because you need to wash your hands before and after each project.
05:29Now, something else that's super fun about or great about these projects is the fact that
05:34you probably already have all of the items for these projects in your kitchen today or right now.
05:40So you don't have to worry about leaving the house if you don't have to.
05:43So that's always a plus, especially during this time.
05:47So first off, I am going to start with the bouncy egg project, and this is a science experiment.
05:54And for this project, you're just going to need two glass jars, two eggs, one cup of vinegar,
06:06and one cup of water.
06:07Now, when you are finished with this project, you will have a bouncy egg.
06:15It's super simple.
06:17You probably already have these items in your kitchen right now.
06:20So you can get started on this today.
06:22All you're going to do is place your eggs.
06:23Wait, I have a question.
06:25Could you use apple cider vinegar or any other clear liquid or does it have to be vinegar?
06:31It has to be vinegar, but you can use apple cider vinegar.
06:36You need the acid.
06:38If you have enough lemon juice, you can use lemon juice.
06:42But I strongly suggest just use vinegar because you can get a big quantity of that for a low price.
06:48If you do use lemon juice, then you will have to have the eggs sit in the solution longer.
06:56So when you're doing this project, you're going to have your eggs in your jars.
07:03And we're just going to slowly put these in here so they don't break.
07:08And make sure your kids wash their hands before they get started.
07:13In one jar, and you can label these so they'll know which one is which.
07:17But honestly, once you start seeing what happens, you'll know immediately which one is which.
07:22So in one jar, you're going to add one cup of vinegar.
07:28And just make sure that it completely covers the egg.
07:32And then in your other jar, you're going to add one cup of water.
07:39And you just want to make sure, again, that it completely covers the egg.
07:42You're going to have these sit for 48 to 72 hours.
07:47What you want your kids to do is to come back after 12 hours to take a look at the eggs,
07:54see how they're looking.
07:56Immediately, you'll see that bubbles start to form around the egg with the vinegar in it.
08:02And nothing really happens with the egg with the water in it.
08:08Roslyn, do you keep the jars covered or do you keep them open?
08:11You can keep them open because another thing that you want them, you want your kids to go back and see
08:18the differences. And one of the one of the things that they can see is or smell is that the one with
08:26the vinegar, it will start to have a little bit of an over. And so they will be able to see the
08:32difference between that as well. After your 48 to 72 hours, you want to take your egg,
08:42I'm going to try to slowly get this out.
08:50It's weird. I'm not going to lie. So you're going to take your egg out and you'll see a little bit of
08:56residue at the top. That's your egg shell. It's going to get eaten away. And you'll rinse it in water.
09:06And you'll see that the egg is rubbery and you can gently bounce the egg. Have your kids put it
09:15up to the light and you can see the yolk still moving inside of the egg and they'll get a kick
09:21out of it. Now, after they're done playing with it gently, you can use either a bowl or a pan of
09:30some sort and slam it on there. And all of the egg will break and all of the liquid will come out.
09:38And there you go. You have your bouncy egg experiment.
09:43And what about the egg with the water? It's just it's just for comparison.
09:49You'll see nothing really happened to it. But I did start on this project a few days ago and I have
09:59one that's in water. And if you can see it cracked a little bit and the yolk started to come out and it
10:07formed a bubble. Yeah, isn't that crazy? Yes, science. Yes, exactly. Exactly. So after that,
10:19you'll have them wash their hands. Not going to wash right now, but you want them to use soap and water,
10:25saying happy birthday two times and they're good to go. In between, I'll be using sanitizer to make
10:30can feed up a little bit. Okay. Okay. So next on our list, we are making DIY Play-Doh.
10:41I'm so excited about this. Yes. Yes, this is one of my favorites. So as a mom, we're always using Play-Doh.
10:50And you know, I'll be honest with you, when I buy it in the jars, they usually go bad within a day
10:56because the kids never close them up well. They get dry and I'm constantly spending money on Play-Doh.
11:03So I decided to reach into my back pocket, go old school like my mom used to do and start making
11:10Play-Doh at home. And guys, once you start doing this, you'll probably never buy Play-Doh again
11:15because it's so easy and it takes less than five minutes to do. So all you're going to need is
11:22flour. So we're going to start with two cups of flour, all-purpose flour.
11:34And I encourage you to have your little ones go ahead and make this themselves
11:40because they'll be proud of what they're making. They'll take care of it more and it gives them
11:45something fun to do. So you have two cups of flour. You have a half cup of salt.
11:55Can you use sea salt or should it be plain salt?
12:00You would like to use plain salt. If you have sea salt available, if you can, if you have a grinder,
12:07if you want to grind it to make it a little finer, then do that first because you don't want to have
12:12it too coarse when you're making Play-Doh because it won't melt down. Got it. You use two tablespoons
12:19of cream of tartare or like my husband says, cream of tartar. And so you have your dry ingredients.
12:28You're going to give that a mix. And you guys, this is just like you're in the kitchen cooking.
12:33So you want to make sure all of your dry ingredients are done first.
12:43Then you take two tablespoons of oil. I use vegetable oil and that's just because I have
12:50young ones. I have a five year old and a two year old and my kids still like to put things in their
12:56mouths. So I want to make sure nobody gets turned around here. So I use vegetable oil, but if you want
13:02to have a good scent, you can use baby oil and you can also add a little bit of essential oils
13:10in this mix. So you can have a good scent and you can just have a little bit of aromatherapy going on.
13:18And then how does it taste? Does it, I mean, does it kind of taste like tartar sauce? Okay.
13:25It's going to taste salty. I may or may not have tasted it before. It's going to be salty.
13:33So, you know, I have to try and make sure just in case the kids get it, you know, exactly.
13:40Exactly. So then you use, um, a cup and a half or a cup and a quarter of hot boiling water or
13:48extremely hot water. So we're just going to pour this in. I like to do a little bit at a time,
13:57or you can just do half and then add the other half. So we're just going to give it a good mix.
14:06And this is just like you're making bread or
14:09more like bread, um, at home. So we'll add the rest of our water. And if you have a little bit too much
14:19or you see that it's, uh, sticky by the time you're done, all you have to do is just add
14:25more flour. You guys, it's really easy. You don't have to worry about messing up.
14:31You can always fix the problem. So if it's too dry, you add a little bit more water. If it's too wet,
14:37you add more flour. So right now you guys, you see that it's a little too wet for me. That's not like
14:45play-doh, right? So we're just going to add more flour a little bit at a time, maybe about a quarter
14:51cup at a time. So you definitely don't add additional salt or the cream of tartar sauce.
14:59No, we're going to go ahead and keep that as is. Okay. Add a little bit more flour.
15:06And okay, here we go. And you want the consistency to be just like regular play-doh that you would get
15:24at the store. All right. A little bit more. And so a mom hack that I like to use with this is when
15:32we're able to have our parties and get out again, you can use this for a favor for your kid's birthday
15:41party. My goddaughter had a play-doh party and her mom made each of the kids and a little package so
15:49they could make them at home. So that's a good way to use this recipe. It's also a great activity to do
15:56at a party. Exactly. Yeah. Or just a rainy day. Exactly. All right. I'm going to put just a little
16:12bit more in there. And so now you want to use your hands.
16:16And you're using gloves because it's going to get pretty sticky.
16:25Exactly. So I'm going to be moving back and forth a lot. So I'm going to use my gloves,
16:31but you don't happen to necessarily use gloves when you're at home.
16:34But what you're going to do is just continue to mix, get all of the, all of the flour mixed in there.
16:47And then you can just pour it out on a cutting board or on your counter like so. And you have
16:57play-doh you guys. Now you can leave it as is, or you can separate it and put it into little balls.
17:09And actually I'm good now because this is no longer sticky. Separate it, put it into little balls.
17:16And what you'll do is just poke a little hole in there with your finger
17:20and you'll take your favorite food coloring right now.
17:24This is the part I was waiting for. I'm so excited.
17:28Yeah. We're doing a little bit of pink. So I like to use about four to six drops.
17:35Okay. And that's for about a four inch ball. But you guys just see how it goes with your,
17:43with your color. If it gets too dark, then just add a little bit more play-doh into it.
17:50And then, um, if it's too light, just add a little bit more. So all you're going to do is just
17:56knead your play-doh as if you're kneading bread. So I like to flip,
18:04palm, flip, palm, and you'll just keep on doing that until you get your color.
18:13And then when you're done, your play-doh will come out just like this.
18:21And so, as you can see, I have different colors and you're good to go.
18:26Oh my God, those look so much fun. They look so much fun.
18:30Yeah, they really are. So what you can do, you can store it in either saran wrap or a plastic bag.
18:37I have food storage bags. You want to get all of the air out and you can save these for up to six
18:43months, you guys. And guess what? If they go dry, you can just hurry up and make some more.
18:48Because as you can see, it only takes about five minutes to do. Yeah. Okay. So we have-
18:54What do we have up next?
18:56Okay. So up next, we have another science experiment. And what we're going to do-
19:06Actually, let me move this right here. What we are going to do is blow up a balloon using a water bottle.
19:16So we have our balloon. You want to use a large balloon. Okay. And let's see. You need one cup
19:31of white vinegar again. And you need a third cup of baking soda. Let's see. I apologize.
19:44Let's get a little bit more baking soda up in here.
19:50I love all the wonderful things you can do with baking soda. It's like a staple. I love keeping
19:55in my house. I have boxes of it. Right? It helps you clean. It takes odors away. And it allows you
20:03to do DIY projects with your kids. Winner. Okay. Especially when you think-
20:09Okay. Again, before this- Right. Exactly. So before this, we're going to wash our hands.
20:16Happy birthday. Happy birthday. And we'll get started on the next one. So you have your water bottle.
20:23And you're going to take a funnel and add your vinegar to the bottle. And this is almost like
20:33doing the volcano experiment minus all the mess. So your kids will be able to see the interaction
20:41between vinegar and baking soda and see what it does. So then we have our vinegar inside of our bottle.
20:51And then you're going to add your baking soda to your balloon.
20:58And with that, I'm going to use a funnel again. I'll get this bad boy up in here.
21:07And if you want to make it faster for the kids, you can have these pre-filled.
21:12Okay.
21:15Okay. And for this one, you're only going to use white vinegar.
21:20Okay. So we're not going to use white vinegar for it. Right. Okay.
21:28And we'll get this.
21:31I cannot- I'm like on pins and needles how this is going to turn out because I'm trying to figure
21:35out in my mind, like, what's the science behind this?
21:38You're going to use white vinegar for it. Okay. All right, guys. We're in.
21:49So you pack it down in there pretty good.
21:53Yeah. You want to get it in there really good. Okay. So we have our baking soda
22:01in the balloon and you're going to place the opening of the balloon over the mouth of the water bottle.
22:10And then you're going to slowly start to put the baking soda in.
22:17OMG.
22:18OMG. That is so amazing. Oh my gosh.
22:26Yeah, I'm telling you, the kids get a kick out of this. You can go outside if you want to,
22:31but I have yet to cause any mess with this. But after it blows up, you can take it off. Let's make
22:39sure it's all down there. Ooh, I'd wait, you guys. We're not going to take this off quite yet.
22:44Oh, that's going to be an explosion. Right, right. But we'll let it sit for a little while.
22:53But you can just take it off, tie it up, and now your kids have a balloon to play with.
22:58And they blew it up themselves. So that's our experiment number three.
23:04Okay. Alrighty. And last but not least, we are going to make DIY coffee filter flowers.
23:17You know, from here, the flower looks very real. It looks really pretty.
23:22Right? It's so nice. And since you can't really get out as much as we used to be able to get out,
23:29now you can just make your flowers inside and, you know, just make them the way that you want.
23:35Okay. So for this experiment, you're going to need coffee filters. And if you want to add some color,
23:42you can do food coloring. And you'll need skewers. And either a glue stick or a glue gun,
23:53depending on how handy you are with your glue gun, you can use a glue stick, right? But it can get a
24:05little hot. So if you don't do crafts all the time, just be careful so it doesn't hurt your fingers. If
24:11you do use glue sticks, then just be careful when you're adding it to the paper, because you don't
24:18want to tear it. I do not suggest using regular glue because it'll be wet and sticky and just a mess.
24:25It's just the worst. Okay. So all you're going to do, you guys watch closely. It's super simple. So
24:32you're going to take about five to six coffee filters and you're going to fold it in half one time.
24:41And then we're going to fold them again, right? And then we're going to fold it one more time. So
24:52that's three times. And then we're just going to dip it into your food coloring and open it up.
25:02And you're going to let it dry.
25:03Okay. This, when the, if the food coloring does not go all the way to the, to the end,
25:11that's totally okay. This can create an ombre effect. Um, but we're going to be cutting some
25:17of the edges anyways. So, uh, you'll see the green go throughout or you'll see the color go throughout.
25:23But what you'll do is then separate them and you can lay them flat and either just let them sit
25:30for a few hours so they can get dry or you can use a hairdryer on low and just dry them up and you'll
25:40be good to go. So once that's done, your coffee filters will then look like this.
25:52So I did a whole bunch of different colors. They're pretty pale because I want it light colors,
25:58but you can see I have blue, orange, yellow. And what you're going to do is you're still going to
26:05take five coffee filters. So we have one, two, three, four, five, and we're going to get back to
26:14our full, our folding. So we'll fold in half one time.
26:19We'll fold in half again. And this time we're only doing two. So then you're going to cut a slit,
26:34one slit here. You want to separate this into three sections. You'll do one slit here
26:41and one slit here. And then, so here you guys, let me see. And then what you're going to do is cut out
26:56the shape of a petal on each section. So depending on what your petal shape looks like determines what
27:07your, um, flower will be or what the overall shape will be at the end. And if you want to do more
27:16than five, I totally suggest doing that because it makes the flower fuller. Okay.
27:26Okay. I wonder, can you make like, cause Gerber daisies are some of my favorite flowers.
27:32Can you make, I guess it's just a matter of how you make the shape.
27:37Yes. So you'll want to do the, the same shape as the daisies. And then also what I would do
27:44is I would do, um, say three more filters and, um, to do the middle of the flower. And I would do that
27:55in a solid color. So it would stand out. And then once you see what we're going to do after this,
28:02it, you can see how you'll be able to form the flower around the stick. So, okay.
28:08This is a good trick to know packages. You know, you can use it for gift wrapping.
28:21Oh yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. Yes. And you know what? So a little, uh, backstory when I first learned
28:34how to do these, it was around the time I was getting married and I may have convinced myself
28:40that I was going to have paper flour that my wedding. So I started making like a ton of these,
28:47like they were everywhere in our house, but then it just kind of got crazy. I had an outdoor wedding.
28:53They said it was supposed to rain. So we had to switch to real flowers, but I thought I was going
28:58to be able to save some money by making these paper flowers. You guys were like, we're going to have
29:02a friendly wedding. I sure was. Okay. So you see how this looks. So all you're going to do is
29:13open and you see how these are kind of still attached. You just want to
29:20cut those in half just so yeah, they separate and then we'll open all of them
29:31and you have your forms for your flower.
29:35Yeah. Listen, once you do, once you do these, you're going to be making them all day. I'm just
29:42letting you know now. I'm totally, I'm totally doing this after this segment.
29:48Okay. So then we're going to take our skewer and we're going to put a hole in the middle.
29:56Now I have a hard time putting them all through at once. So I just gently do one at a, at a time.
30:05But you just want them to go directly through the center.
30:13Okay. And this skewer will be your stem for your flower. And if you want to take it a step further,
30:22you can spray paint them green.
30:25Okay. So now we have our petals on the skewer. So all you're going to do, take the first one,
30:38you start from the top. I'll push these down just a little bit. And we're just going to put a little
30:46bit of glue. Let's see. Okay, there we go. You just put a little bit of glue around the flower.
31:05Right at where the whole meat system?
31:07Yes. Just, and I apologize. You're going to put it around here.
31:13That's okay. Oh, got it. Okay.
31:15And what you do is you just flip it up. And this is going to be the center of our flower. And you
31:21want this to attach to your skewer. So, and then you just kind of grab it at the bottom like that.
31:31So you scrunch it up and it'll stick together. So there we go. We have our first layer you guys done.
31:40Now we're just going to keep on doing that same exact thing over and over again until we're done
31:48with our flowers. So let's see. My glue gun is acting up. So don't you worry. I have a glue stick.
31:57It's probably good to have one on the side anyway, just in case.
32:03Uh-huh. But remember when you're using that glue stick, guys, I'm telling you, be careful
32:11because it can tear the paper. Luckily, the coffee filters are stronger than tissue paper,
32:18but you still want to be pretty careful. All right. So we have our second layer. Let's do the third.
32:25What kind of paint or watercolor would you suggest if you want, uh, colors that are more vibrant?
32:34Or would you use, or can you use, like, tissue paper?
32:37Can you use, okay, I would not use tissue paper. You can use tissue paper, but I don't suggest using
32:48them just because they're so delicate and so fragile and you can mess this up really easily. But you can
32:55use, um, do not use an oil-based food coloring. You want to use a water-based food color coloring,
33:03and, um, they have different colors to where you can do, um, to where you can do,
33:11I apologize to where you can do, um, I apologize.
33:18No, that's all right. They have different colors. You can do more vibrant colors. You can do neon colors,
33:24and you can just, um, add more color to your water. So there we go. So this is our last one,
33:34and you have a beautiful, there we go, flower. Rosalyn is awesome.
33:43Thank you so much. And there you go. Those are some DIY projects that you can do with your kids
