Entertainment Editor Okla Jones sits down with Andre Holland to discuss the pressure and responsibility of becoming Huey P. Newton.
Transcript
00:00Portraying an iconic figure like Huey P. Newt, did you feel any pressure as an actor?
00:06And if so, can you speak to that for me?
00:09Yeah, man, I felt enormous pressure, to be honest.
00:13It's any pressure, but also responsibility, you know.
00:17He's such a complex character, and I wanted to make sure that I had enough time to really research it in the right way and to really prepare in the right way.
00:26I also felt like, you know, everybody is familiar, at least with the image of who Huey Newton was.
00:34And so, yeah, I felt the responsibility to, yeah, to live up to and present like a really fair, balanced and nuanced portrayal of this person.
00:45And I think a lot of times with our stories, you know, it's so rare that we even get to tell them that there's an added pressure of, well, if this is going to be the one we're going to do, we need to make sure we do it right.
00:55You know, and while this show isn't a real detailed biopic look at his life or at the life of the party of the Panthers, but, you know, I still felt like there was an opportunity to lay in some real nuance and some history and some context that maybe people didn't know.
