Transcript
00:00Okay, hi everyone. Good evening. I'm Javela Mustafa. I'm the television host for Fresh Out Live, which was TRL. We're in our fourth season.
00:08It's an honor to be here and to celebrate. My question is, Essence started in 1970. It is now 2023.
00:16How would you personally define the essence of a black woman in today's society?
00:24I'm assuming you want me to answer that one or somebody else.
00:27But I'll be happy to share it. I mean, this is a story that in the stewardship that I have at this time over this cultural artifact, it's very easy for me to answer.
00:37If you go back to seeing what you saw in this episode and what you'll learn, the founding of Essence was about illuminating this wonderful member of human community called the black woman.
00:46It was about illuminating her, celebrating her, placing her where she belonged. Essence did its job.
00:52And guess what black women are now? The CEOs of home culture and community.
00:55Because of what Essence did. So what is the legacy of Essence right now?
01:01Equipping her with the information to take her seat as CEO of home culture and community and lead from the forefront of the culture that she defines,
01:09with the equity that she already understands she needs, and with unapologetic celebration, big and small, for the way that she's changing the world.
01:16Super simple.
01:17Big and unconsarlaresENcated.
01:24Thank you very much.
01:25Congratulations.
