Sports journalist Maria Taylor breaks down what it means to see two Black quarterbacks on the big screen for American football's biggest night.
Transcript
00:00Hi, everyone. It's Maria Taylor here, and I am so excited to go and witness in person at Phoenix, Arizona, the history being made of having two black quarterbacks competing against one another in the big game.
00:14I mean, if you think about the quarterback position and the professional league that it's played in, it's been difficult for black men to break through what seemed like a glass ceiling for many years.
00:24In fact, it was just 35 years ago when the very first black quarterback won a big game, and he actually went on to be a super big leader in the community.
00:37He's also leading the league right now, still very a part of it.
00:41And one thing that we know for sure is that men have been working tirelessly, players have been working tirelessly to have an opportunity to make history that we're going to see made on Sunday.
00:51I do believe that it's something that our young children, young boys should sit down and watch and that their parents should talk to them about because there was a time when that position, the quarterback position, was not able to be held by black men.
01:04It was believed that maybe they weren't smart enough, maybe they weren't leaders, maybe they didn't deserve to hold that position because the quarterback position is held to such a high esteem.
01:13It's often the team captain, it's often the second coach who's on the field, and black men were basically relegated to other positions throughout the league and throughout the field.
01:24And it's great to see for the first time these two quarterbacks being able to compete.
01:28I know that I'm actually making a special trip out to Phoenix just to be there.
01:32I am going to stay, watch the entire game on Sunday.
01:35I want to be able to go back and tell my kids and my grandkids that I was there when history was made.
01:41And I hope you understand just how important and monumental this moment is and that we all get an opportunity to cherish it on Sunday.
