It was only right that the outfits matched the high energy at Afropunk. We caught up with some of the attendees who understood the assignment.

00:00Alright, so tell me about your style.
00:14Fatalicious.
00:15Fat, black, and Muslim.
00:17Period.
00:18Rainy, stormy, cloud, bottom.
00:21Very punk.
00:22I always wear black.
00:24My hair is blonde.
00:25I feel like it creates a nice contrast.
00:27I like nature, everything, all that.
00:29I'm an anime fan, so I want to mix both African culture and Japanese culture together.
00:33Today I'm DJ Barbie.
00:35Effortless empress.
00:38Opulent.
00:39Because I feel that more of us should gain our confidence back and just live as we are.
00:46We're royalty.
00:47So my style today is part punk, part glam, all black woman.
00:52This is Barbara Cheeseborough.
00:54This is our first cover in 1970.
00:56I have hints of black owned businesses on me.
01:00So I want it to be very elegant, but still sexy, you know.
01:03So this dress is by Addicted to Fitz.
01:05You guys gotta hear us.
01:06And then these beautiful earrings are by Aura by Jewel.
01:09I had to come represent black, all black owned businesses.
01:12So I'm a flower fairy.
01:13Out of the hours I spent on both of the outfits.
01:16It was 42 hours.
01:18That was 40 hours.
01:19His outfit alone, not to mention my outfit.
01:22I'm usually all black, like gothic, and this is like the exact opposite.
01:27I feel alone, but I freaking love it.
01:29I fit hoochie.
01:30Hoochie shorts, cause hoochies never get cold, hoochies never get old.
01:33I just always want to honor Africa.
01:36So that's his hair.
01:37I'm glistening, you know.
01:39You eat what you are.
01:40Well, you gotta wear what you wanna be.
01:42I'm sparkling.
01:43I'm manifesting.
01:44This is how you call manifest destiny.
01:46And what do you love about Afropunk?
01:47The blackity, black, blackity, black, blackness of it.
01:50Afropunk is just you, but turned up to level 10.
01:54A lot of the times throughout our lives we're always editing ourselves.
01:58We're always like, ooh, I don't wanna do too much.
02:00Or ooh, what are they gonna think if I show up in a yellow wig?
02:03But Afropunk is a place where that gaze of judgment does not exist
02:08and you could be whoever you wanna be.
