00:00There's so much space and so much room for them to exist.
00:06Yeah, I feel the same way.
00:08You know, want them to just see themselves and to see that, you know, it's to infinity and beyond, miss girl.
00:17Hello, Brandi Victoria with Essence Magazine. How are you?
00:20Hi.
00:20Hello.
00:21Hello.
00:22Good to see you.
00:23Thank you so much for speaking with me.
00:25You know, you both have delivered such memorable performances in real life over the years.
00:30I'm curious, when it comes to a project like Lightyear, what are you able to do with animation that you can't in film or television or on stage?
00:38I mean, you get to just do crazy stuff with your voice.
00:41I think I always concentrate on my voice as much as I do my physical performance when I'm doing a live action.
00:47Do infinity.
00:48Are you trying to get me to pull your finger?
00:49But obviously it's more concentrated here because this is all I have to show you what I'm trying to convey.
00:55So you just find a bunch of different levels with your voice.
00:58And then obviously the subject matter, you know, you were mentioning it like this is intergalactic.
01:02We're in space, the galaxies.
01:03What does my voice do and how do I express my emotions in that, you know, arena?
01:08Yeah, I think you also get to like, I've been to space now.
01:11You get to go.
01:14You get to go places you maybe won't get to go in real, you know, you can see yourself there, which is pretty cool.
01:21That it is.
01:21Nice.
01:23And then I'm sure you've seen some of the viral moments that have happened with recent films like Encanto and Turning Red, you know, where young children literally feeling like they see themselves on screen.
01:32So I'm curious for you, you know, what you're hoping little black girls will see when they look at Izzy and Alicia, you know, in this movie.
01:40I hope they see that their passages have been paid for.
01:45I hope they see that they can dream bigger than perhaps they dreamt the day before, excuse me.
01:54That there's so much space and so much room for them to exist.
02:03Yeah, I feel the same way.
02:04You know, want them to just see themselves and to see that, you know, it's to infinity and beyond, Miss Girl.
02:11Yes.
02:12And Leslie, I'm also curious, like, what, you know, drew you to this project?
02:16I always love, like, good casting kind of, you know, stories.
02:19So was there anything kind of unique of landing, you know, in these roles for either of you?
02:25Man, you know, I almost feel like there was, like, a little trick that was played on me when I got thrown because, you know, I did my audition and then afterwards we didn't hear nothing.
02:34It was like, yeah, they're probably going to end up going another way, you know, and I'm like, I was like, oh, dang, you know, okay, well, you know, I'm excited to see the movie.
02:40And then literally, like, a month or something later, like, you got the part.
02:42I'm like, what?
02:44I'm like, great.
02:45That was, like, funny because I just remember kind of putting it out of my mind and then it came back and it's like, what's meant to be is meant to be.
02:55I think it was the excitement of knowing that we could be a part of this world.
02:59This world is so iconic.
03:01It's 26 years now that this has been a part of all of our growings up in some capacity.
03:09And we know these lines.
03:11We know this toy, but now we know the man and what made the world.
03:16So this is really cool concept.
03:20Well, thank you both so much for your time.
03:23Oh,
03:23oh.
