The teacher-turned-actress is providing much-needed intersectional representation as the first-ever deaf superhero in Marvel’s ‘Eternals’

00:00As the first deaf character in MCU, and you're also one of only a handful of Black women in MCU, or Latin women in MCU, you're providing a lot of unprecedented representation in that franchise.
00:13And like I mentioned before, a lot of little kids all over the world are going to be looking at you.
00:17And they're going to see somebody who represents them that they've probably never seen before, like propped up in such a prominent role as a hero.
00:26You know, for deaf children all over the world, for children of color all over the world, what does it mean to you provide that type of image for kids?
00:34And that might be, you know, one of the first validating experiences that they have through film.
00:39Well, first of all, I mean, as you mentioned, I am Black and Mexican, and I'm glad that you mentioned that.
00:46I come from a biracial mixed family. I'm Black and Mexican, and those aren't my only things growing up.
00:53I definitely struggled.
