The recording process was long - not too long because I’ve done other animated things and I’ve recorded for years,” says Cudi. “It was just kind of fun to finally dive into this animated space.”

Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi and Jessica Williams are accomplished entertainers in their own right. In addition to a stellar music career, Mescudi has also appeared in Need For Speed, How To Make It In America, and Westworld. Williams, who is the former co-host of the 2 Dope Queens podcast, was also a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show, as well as having a starring role in Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore. Even with several years of acting under their belts, filming Entergalactic proved to be a different experience for both parties.

The two talented actors spoke to ESSENCE about recording vocals during a global crisis, as well as how they approached their roles in the film. “It’s a longer project,” Williams says of the television event’s production. “We would record in studios in different places because we recorded it at the height of the pandemic. So no one was really together, but one of the cool things that we did was that they recorded my face as well, so there was this sort of acting element, traditionally that I’m used to - but with voice it was really fun.”

Mescudi likened recording his lines for the character of Jabari to his many years in the music industry, as well as his appearance in an episode of The Cleveland Show in 2013.

“It was totally different than anything I’ve ever done because we worked on this thing for so long - it was like 3 years,” the 38-year-old tells ESSENCE. “The recording process was long - not too long because I’ve done other animated things and I’ve recorded for years.”

“It was just kind of fun to finally dive into this animated space,” he continues “I had always wanted to do voice acting, I always felt like I had the voice for it, I felt like if I had the opportunity I could do a good job, so it was really fun to just dive into that and just be someone else for a little bit in this animated world.”

00:00It was just kind of fun to just finally dive into this animated space.
00:05I had always wanted to do voice acting.
00:07I always felt like I had the voice for it.
00:09I felt like if I had the opportunity, I could do a good job.
00:14So it was really fun to just dive into that and just be someone else for a little bit
00:19in this animated world.
00:30For my first question for you, Scott, what was the inspiration for the creation of this
00:35television event and the name as well, too?
00:38Well, I always wanted to do some type of like fun, you know, type of like visual album,
00:48but it's been done before.
00:50So I was thinking about other angles and a TV series just felt new and refreshing.
00:58The name Intergalactic came from an old song I did on my first album, which was simply
01:06about meeting a girl for the first time, kind of falling in love with her while I'm doing
01:13shrooms for the first time with her.
01:15And I thought that that was such a great title to describe the feeling of love, you know,
01:26something otherworldly, something magical.
01:31And that's why I spelled it with an E because I'm totally taking the phrase.
01:34So people see it and they see the space elements and stuff like this, but it's not supposed
01:39to be literal, you know?
01:40It's more of a metaphor, you know?
01:42And this question too is actually for both of you all.
01:45With you both being actors and entertainers in your own right, how was the process like
01:50doing voiceover roles as Britana, you know, acting in an actual film?
01:54What was the process like?
01:55How did it differ for you guys?
01:57Well, this project is animated and it took 6,000 years to do this project.
02:04And I changed, I changed as a human doing this project.
02:08No, but it really honestly did take like two and a half years.
02:12And so it's a longer project and also we would record in the studio, in studios in different
02:20places because we recorded it at the height of the pandemic was when we began.
02:24And so nobody was really together.
02:27But one of the cool things that we did was they recorded my face as well.
02:31So there was this, it felt like sort of acting element traditionally in the way that I'm used
02:36to.
02:37But with voice, it was really fun.
02:40I got to wear just kind of like sweat sometimes if I wanted to and that felt good as well.
02:45Not having to do like a full glam look, you know, to perform for the day.
02:50It was like really almost liberating to be in this booth by myself, you know, figuring
02:55out this character.
02:56Did you wear cool clothes in your recording sessions?
02:58Sometimes I'd be just fully naked and I just kind of gave everybody NDAs and told them,
03:04hey, don't talk about this.
03:05And, you know, that's how we kind of did that.
03:07Some people record like that.
03:08I mean, of course, wasn't walking barefoot.
03:10I had flip-flops on.
03:11That sucks.
03:12Yeah.
03:13No, no, no.
03:15What was your question?
03:17Repeat the question.
03:18You know, you guys both have acted before.
03:21I mean, he's in previous roles.
03:23How did the process differ since there was voiceover for this as pertaining to acting in
03:26a regular film or television show?
03:28What was the process like and how did it differ?
03:30Well, I think this was the first animated thing I've ever done.
03:33Well, no, no, no, no.
03:35I did the Cleveland show years ago and that was interesting.
03:39That was fun.
03:41That was a lot of fun.
03:42But this is the first, like, you know, thing where I'm like really in it.
03:47It's a fucking series.
03:49It's like a long thing.
03:50And it was, like she said, I mean, it was totally different than anything I've ever done
03:56because we, you know, worked on this thing, you know, so long.
04:00It was like three years.
04:01It was just kind of fun to just finally dive into this animated space.
04:06I had always wanted to do voice acting.
04:09I always felt like I had the voice for it, you know?
04:13I feel like if I had the opportunity, I could do a good job, you know?
04:17So it was really fun to just dive into that and, you know, just be someone else for a little bit
04:23in this animated world, you know?
04:26Well, Scott, Jessica, that was my last question.
04:28Thank you so much for everything.
04:30And I hope you guys have an amazing day.
04:33Be well.
