The creator of Sugardoh, Aliyah Marandiz, breaks down why normal waxing techniques are painful during this week's episode of Shop Essence Live. Aliyah created this product out of a need to find a waxing solution that was kind to her already sensitive skin. Sugardoh is a vegan, compostable, and virtually pain-free solution to all of us who love the results of what waxing gives us, but hates the pain!

01:39and waxing i'm not nervous nope not at all but you guys stand bye alia
01:46all right we in here let's do it are you right i know you're ready oh i you are so brave by the way
01:56and i'm so excited for this yes i am either brave or crazy i don't know but it works um
02:03kp creation image is like i'm nervous for you girl yeah she's like uh-oh i love our community here at
02:10shop essence live so we're gonna we're gonna try this out together okay okay so i'd love for you
02:16before we get into these products talk about sugar dough talk about how you got this idea and got
02:22started yeah so i am somebody who has very sensitive skin and i noticed a couple years ago that there was
02:32just nothing in the hair removal aisle that worked for me in fact it was damaging my skin more
02:37hyperpigmentation in grown hairs razor burns especially as black women brown women we are
02:43more we have more sensitive skin in general and so we have to be more careful with the products we use
02:48do you hear me yes i hear you now
02:58great in my dorm room kitchen i whipped up a batch of my first sugaring paste which is now sugaring dough
03:08and realized it left my skin smooth and soft not red and irritated for the first time it was the first
03:14hair removal product that did that and it was made out of three simple ingredients sugar lemon and water
03:21so it was natural i could compost it after i used it and a little went a really long way so during the
03:29pandemic when people had to become diy nail their own diy nail salon and wax salon i thought what a great
03:38time to introduce this product into people's routines listen she introduced a whole business
03:46during the pandemic a lot of businesses were going under and now on shop essence live selling
03:53correct you are just so inspirational thank you i want you okay so how how do you want to do it
04:00you're going to leave me here we're going to talk to you okay yes so um with sugar dough we normally give
04:07you a whole kit from start to finish beginner friendly and i was not a waxer before i learned how to
04:15sugar at home and so i was able to create a whole system for you guys to learn it from home so it's
04:21not scary or intimidating um so we want to first start off with our powder okay okay
04:31you know what you know why i was so like oh i could try that live all the reviews every time somebody
04:40ripped it off they were like oh that wasn't so bad so i was like okay i feel like i can try this
04:44well we'll see we'll see yeah it's normally half the pain of waxing a four out of ten
04:49is okay um so you just want we're gonna do our arm because it's kind of the easiest place to start
04:56off so we're gonna just put some powder on our hand and then apply it to our arm like so and how
05:03much powder like do too much powder and then no you can't do too much powder or do too much so what
05:09the powder does is makes it more easy for the the dough to adhere to your hair and not your skin
05:14i have way more powder this is there you go no that's good that's good for a beginner that's good
05:20okay and now you have um there's two firmnesses firmnesses that i offer there's medium and firm
05:28medium is for finer hair like your arms you have the mini version um that is highlighted yeah that's
05:36fine either is fine and then the firm is the darker option and so for the arms let's do medium that's
05:44what i like to recommend so do you have the medium or do you just have the firm i have you see me
05:50everything okay yeah i did the medium okay yeah okay open it up
05:59and then with your knife
06:05and it's a little messy the first time but it's like riding a bike get better and better each time
06:12and then just grab kp your emojis is making me more nervous okay all right we need to support each
06:19other here
06:20we support each other
06:23so how much yes so for your arm i normally recommend like we'll start with a gumball size
06:33of dough so that's how much i got on my knife
06:36can i see your knife can i see it oh that's a lot okay hold on
06:40and then while you do that i'm gonna put it on my applicator
06:47yep we'll start off there yep and you can also use your hands we're just on live so we're trying
06:54to make it less
06:54and then you put it on the applicator and that's for some people is the hardest part
07:00and that's just it's easier from there
07:03all right so i have like a little wooden thing can i use my hands i can use my hand yeah you can
07:08use your hands yeah whatever you want
07:11go in hand and then while you grab the dough i'm gonna show the first little
07:18oh yeah great put it up put it on the straight edge of your applicator
07:22i actually don't have one oh that's fine
07:26so can i just i can just yeah let's do the hand method so yeah this is good you can use applicator
07:33hand method or we have cloth strips so you start in the opposite direction of hair growth
07:40which is normally for the arm so for the form yeah there you go we're gonna mold up and then down
07:46yep so you want to hold it down for a bit okay and it kind of warms up with your skin
07:54oh okay and then you rake up
07:58yes i'm waxing in case you're tuning in to shop
08:04yes and then go back down and mold again
08:07i go back down and then yeah mold again yeah i'm shaking
08:13i'm shaking okay okay and you're using the very tips of your applicator and then you flick parallel to your skin if it's attacking from the top
08:26okay flick stick to your fingers yeah and then just flick like that yeah oh my gosh i did it it was not that bad
08:42it was actually not bad that was a clean flick too when i tell i sweated i sweat more before
08:51but that was not that was totally bad show your arm where the powder it took off you can just see it from the powder
09:00yep look at the smooch house
09:03yes and then you can flip that last part off by also molding and then flicking down again
09:09mold mold up and then flick down
09:14oh that oh okay i am not exaggerating it because you saw how scared i was already
09:24it was not bad at all yep how did you do that
09:29yeah so so the reason
09:32yeah so the reason for that is
09:36it's impossible for this to actually adhere to your live skin cells
09:39unlike hot wax which like heats up the live skin cells so when you rip
09:43you're ripping a layer of skin sometimes whereas this
09:47is just ripping your hair off and dead skin cells so it's
09:51exfoliating as well bro we're ripping layers of skin
09:55and we with the kind part of our body that we usually
09:58i just want you to imagine this right now
10:02yeah this oh my gosh so incredible and you also have other things i want to i want to
10:08focus because we're shopping here reminder shop essence live when you purchase
10:13here at shop essence live you are purchasing directly from these black owned businesses
10:17so make sure you're buying i see it going in the wish list i see it going
10:21yeah so bye bye bye this is a great diy i can't even imagine the amount of money that you would save
10:28going to these expensive wax places when you can and it hurts it hurts
10:33and you got product incredible product here and i saw one of the reviews you can actually reuse
10:40this correct yeah you would use that same piece if it starts heating up for beginners that normally
10:46happens if it starts heating up then you just move to the firm and it'll stop melting as quickly
10:52but yeah you use the whole piece for your whole arm or your whole body part um i would i normally say as
10:58long as the dough is working you can use it and so oh so these jars so the large jar which is in the
11:04bare minimum kit last people six months to a year of full body because a little goes a long way
11:12i'm just waxing away now yes yes you are look at that see and that's that's the fun of it is like
11:19i try to make just waxing less intimidating and it's fun that it's sugar and that it is natural
11:26and while we talk i'm just going to show the pits as well so you don't have to do this but i'm just
11:31going to also show the pits if you want to ask any questions okay so the questions coming in again this
11:38is a live show just for this reason if you have any questions for aaliyah please ask it now someone
11:44asked what about your face lovely eyes would like to know yes you can use it for your face you can use
11:50it for your pits you can use it for your bikini line um you can use it for any body part except
11:57your nose and your ears like those cracks and crevices on the insides yeah somebody did ask what
12:03about your eyebrows i know the precision with eyebrows yeah so that is yeah so that's what you
12:10would um you can heat up the dough and also use them with wax strips yeah so what you would do is just
12:18heat it up use a little stick and then line that part that you want to get this nifty little stick
12:24that's it that's the face applicator precision young precision yes this has changed my life i just
12:33i hope that you understand this i hate getting waxed but i love like the that's the only thing that
12:40leaves clean like surfaces and this is this is a game changer okay don't do her pits you guys continue
12:49to ask questions here i did see now if you can just repeat because i know you have different consistencies
12:56yeah which consistency is good for thicker hair hair versus thinner hair yeah so this is what i was using
13:04on my pits was the firm dough which is um these guys so black top or red top and the firm dough is good
13:13for beginners because it is firmer it won't melt on you as quickly um but it's especially good for
13:21thick hair like your pits or your pubic region and then the medium jar is going to be good which is
13:29gold top um is going to be good for finer hairs which is normally your face your arms your legs
13:37so good and i'm flying up the products here i'm seeing it going in the wish list i'm seeing it going
13:43that's what we love to see um and i love how you have you have several kits right there's the starter kit
13:50have the essentials kit up right now i think that's really a good way to go unless you're just trying to
13:55refill something because you you kind of need the whole system that is so beautifully laid out so
14:01the essential kit is a great one to have up here if you're like okay i'm gonna go in and i'm gonna try
14:08to have my little sugar dough set up um this the essential kit comes with one jar and so i'd recommend
14:14getting the firm jar because it's for beginners and then it become comes with all the tools the powder the
14:20aloe everything you need for a successful sugaring session so okay how do you recommend this is from
14:28caitlyn clark how do you recommend exfoliating between um waxes or is there kind of care between
14:37what that is a really good question so i recommend three to four times exfoliating exfoliating three to
14:45four times a week either with a physical exfoliator or with a chemical exfoliator either works but that
14:54will also help when you do start sugaring the hairs will come out a lot more easily as well so it's
14:59actually beneficial for the sugaring and the appearance of your skin i love that and then a
15:04best friend fragrance it wants to know does it contain any oils it doesn't contain any oils no
15:11and i feel like that will probably work against the waxing if it did exactly yeah it will prevent
15:16the wax from sticking to your skin love it all right just a reminder everyone if you have any
15:23what did i just do i just did something the heck now i hear you i turned off my camera
15:30all right that's me trying to read your comments okay um what should the consistency be
15:38when taking it from the jar how do i know if it needs microwaving first that's a great question
15:44yeah that is a great question so if it's too hard to get out the jar that means you should microwave it
15:51if you can get out the jar without heating it up which is ideal then just do that and then how long
15:57should people wave it for if they do just just 10 15 seconds you just needed enough so you can pull
16:03it out the jar i'm glad i asked that because i was definitely putting it in for one minute okay
16:08yeah that's gonna bring like bubbling caramel yeah that's probably not gonna work um let me see madame
16:19petty cool i'm sorry if i'm messing up your you guys have creative names how late does it last
16:24until you have to wax how long does it last that you have to wax again yeah so it depends on obviously
16:30everybody's hair growth rate i will say the more you sugar the less hair grows back and the longer
16:38it takes to grow back so right now i am at sugaring my legs once a month i do my pits every two to three
16:46weeks i do my mustache every two weeks and sometimes i do it longer because the hair just is so fine that
16:54i barely see it and over time you'll notice a really big difference between um your hair growth
17:00by sugaring often we love okay questions are flying in i'm gonna take two more and then i would encourage
17:08you guys to follow sugar dough they have incredible tutorials on their youtube on their instagram hit them
17:16up i'm sure they will um answer your questions there i'm going to ask a question from britney golden
17:21she asks as a beginner do you recommend oh no i lost it as a beginner what tool do you recommend
17:29to wax your hands strips um yeah more painful than the other oh that's a good question so i would
17:37recommend starting with either strips or applicator and applicator is a nice happy medium because you use
17:44less dough it's like right before you you master the technique of your hands so applicator um would
17:52be where i'd start and they're all around the same pain level so good and then whole wants to know is
18:02there a shelf life to the product that's actually a good question as well like is there a place that
18:08you should store it and how long does it last yeah so the shelf life is two years so it's gonna last
18:14you a long time and then just store it in a cool dry place so preferably not in a place that gets a lot
18:22of humidity oh i'm so proud of you right now like it's like a proud sugar mama moment this is my real
18:29question though i like how do you get them oh how do you know good question so and that's where the
18:35applicator comes in because it's all contained on here oh yes i'll send you one um and then and they
18:42wash it off with water so water just water so that's where like it's really handy to have just
18:49a bowl of water washcloth and then everything's all cleaned up you don't need any like special wipes
18:55or special oils or anything um it's just sugar so you just have to wash it off the water okay so i do
19:01have water so this is definitely coming right off okay that's amazing oh so incredible yeah so
19:10another thing too if you if you start waxing you're like oh god i can't rip it off i can't rip it off
19:16you just grab some water you know or you just pop into the shower so that's why it's beginner
19:20friendly and um made for beginner waxers so good and then you did talk about earlier and i see somebody
19:28in the comments danny simone is like she must be no customer she's putting herself it's compostable
19:35so you did mention that earlier for anybody that doesn't really know what that means or what the
19:41benefit of to the earth that is can you talk a little bit about that and why that was important for
19:45you guys yeah um so obviously we know the state of our environment and how our climate is changing
19:56rapidly so that was really important for me for a product that we use so regularly hair removal
20:02we're constantly buying razors or wax kits or epilators it was important for me to be as
20:08sustainable as possible and so i joke like oh if we're socially pressured to be to have to remove
20:14our hair why not make it sustainable and so that's why when you're using sugar dough if you're able to
20:21compost it it's near zero waste because everything else in our kit is reusable and we have glass jars
20:27so we're very conscious of the impact that we want to that we put on the environment after sugaring
20:34really good did you talk about the post sugaring soothing jam oh yeah no i didn't so this is just a
20:41nice way to soothe your skin afterwards um it is our aloe base it's almost 100 aloe our aloe base
20:51calming serum and this is just a nice way to calm things down so within an hour if you do get any
20:57redness or irritation it should go away so then that's a nice way to just kind of tie a bow over
21:02your sugaring session so good she is hooking y'all up everything that you could possibly everything
21:10in these kits and trust me if you're just tuning in you you missed a show so i would
21:15i would definitely encourage you to go back we did a live waxing my first ever wax live on camera for you
21:21guys um and it was incredible and just even you sharing the information the reason why other waxes
21:28really hurt is because it's actually ripping off the top layer of your skin which completely makes sense
21:33now that you say it um but really really great alia i'd love for you to just leave us with a
21:39positive note right there's a lot of entrepreneurs that are watching this they may be sitting on an
21:44idea that they're afraid to move forward because they don't know if you know anybody would like it or
21:48buy what has been your biggest encouraging factor yeah for me it was i was really hesitant to start
21:56sugar dough because i was like oh but there's a ton of etsy shops that that sell sugar dough you can
22:03you can make it at home and then um one of my really close friends was like yeah but there hasn't
22:09been somebody named alia or there hasn't been you that has made a sugaring company and that's gonna be
22:17the difference and we talked about it with pauline too that's gonna be the difference
22:21um you're gonna be different from everything else because you're the one doing it and you're putting
22:26your heart and soul into it and that's what i love about entrepreneurship it's such a reflection of the
22:31person as well so while i'm building a business i'm also reflecting on myself and i'm growing myself
22:38and i'm growing the business um so it really is like having a child and then like just getting
22:45everybody involved in participating i love and i just love seeing how supportive new voices family
22:53companies are to each other like i know watching now you were watching hers and and just how you guys
22:59kind of build with each other i'd love for you to touch on just what it's been like being a part of
23:05the new voices family yeah so i came into starting sugar dough with no business experience at all and so
23:14a big struggle for me was just trying to find resources that understand where i'm coming from
23:20because it's a very niche space and i remember the first call with the new voices team it was like
23:28they were reading my mind like they knew exactly what i was struggling with what the solution was
23:33what the path forward was and normally you know i'm kind of just in my own bubble and it was so nice
23:40to have people that really heard me and understood me and that was the first time that that had happened
23:45um so it just makes me super excited to continue being part of the new voices family
23:50and i just love i'm so inspired by everybody too and that's part of the new voices family
23:58i absolutely just incredible if you guys want to know how you can join the new voices not even an
24:05application process it's you fill out the form and you can qualify to join the new voices uh family
24:14make sure that you go follow new voices family on instagram there's a link in their bio and from there
24:20you get all the information you need you could be a part of this incredible community access to the
24:25essence ecosystem the new voices family ecosystem with incredible black owned businesses um and start your journey now
24:33journey now don't wait don't wait don't wait don't wait um but alia you're so amazing as i said you
24:40changed my life you changed my life my pocket and appreciate you this was so so much fun um and i can't wait to
24:51see what's next for you guys yeah thank you so much and you're a natural too i'm like i'm really proud right
24:57now i'm really proud i'm about to teach everybody in my house how to wax now yeah but this was so so much
25:04fun thank you and again if you're watching on the replay go to their full cart they have incredible
25:09starter kits and amazing products great all right thanks alia bye bye
