Actors Deji Laray and Thomas Q. Jones discuss their new show "Johnson" with editor Brande Victorian.
Transcript
00:00What's the history, you know, of your relationship for you to have taken, you know, the script to Thomas, Thomas, for you to write the check?
00:06Like, how long have you known each other?
00:08Well, I moved to L.A. I retired from the NFL in 2012 and started really taking acting seriously.
00:14And I moved to Los Angeles probably about two months after I moved there in 2014.
00:19I met this writer and he wanted me for a project that he was that he was working on.
00:24And he was like, you know, you'd be good for this project called Johnson.
00:26This is 2014. And he told me about the premise of it and the narrative.
00:31And I was like, listen, I'm all for that. It's both black, black men showing us in the way we want to be seen.
00:36Cool. But I didn't know that it was Deji's show.
00:39OK. And every time I would see this guy, I would ask him, hey, what's up with Johnson?
00:43What's up with Johnson? He was like, yeah, you know, I'm still trying to figure it out.
00:47Figure it out. Three years later, 2017, he introduced me to Deji.
00:51And I find out that it's actually Deji's idea. And he wrote a script for it.
00:56And when we met, we just clicked. We both had, like Deji said earlier, the same work ethic, same energy, same amount of integrity for who we are as black people and black men.
01:05And the project just spoke to me for three years. I really kept asking this guy about it.
01:09And then once he, you know, asked me to be an actor and a pilot, I was like, bro, nah, like, this is bigger than that.
01:18This is an opportunity for us to lead the charge and put black men in media where they should be.
01:23And in that way, we can encourage other black men and also enlighten black women.
01:27And then we'll see you next time.
