00:00You can't protect any of them.
00:16As the first deaf character in MCU, and you're also one of only a handful of Black women in MCU, or Latin women in MCU,
00:25you're providing a lot of unprecedented representation in that franchise.
00:29And like I mentioned before, a lot of little kids all over the world are going to be looking at you,
00:33and they're going to see somebody who represents them that they've probably never seen before,
00:39like cropped up in such a prominent role as a hero, you know, for deaf children all over the world,
00:46for children of color all over the world.
00:47What does it mean to you provide that type of image for kids?
00:50And that might be, you know, one of the first validating experiences that they have through film.
00:55Well, first of all, I mean, as you mentioned, I am Black and Mexican, and I'm glad that you mentioned that.
01:02I come from a biracial mixed family.
01:05I'm Black and Mexican, and those aren't my only things growing up.
01:10I definitely struggled with that because all those intersections of identity, you know, what comes first, what do I say first, and how do I even, what do I call myself?
01:21So I think I look to TV and film for inspiration, for different ideas of how do other people, what do they call themselves?
01:31And if they have so many different identities and intersections and what they connect to.
01:37And growing up, I really didn't see enough of that on screen.
01:40So I definitely felt a little lost.
01:43And I saw, you know, a deaf woman on the screen, but she was white.
01:46I saw a Black woman on the screen, but she was hearing.
01:51So that was my situation that I was in.
01:54Where are the people that are just like me?
01:56So I think now, I'm just so happy that we are at a time and a moment right now where we are able to explore how we have different identities.
02:09And also how they intersect and change based on what stories I'm telling and who I am with.
02:17And I hope that children will be able to see the movie and also relate.
02:24And I hope also that children will see me using my platform as the first deaf superhero.
02:31And also learn how to share their own narratives, their own different identities.
