Transcript
00:00My name is Lana Ramey. I'm 12 years old and I'm from Bowie, Maryland.
00:06When I grow up, I want to be on Broadway. I want to be a big star. I want everybody to know me.
00:23Today I'm following Miss Candy around. I'm seeing what she's doing.
00:29We're at Series Radio and she's been interviewed by a few people.
00:34Candy Burris is here. Hi Candy.
00:36Hey Andy.
00:37You can see her live on Broadway.
00:40To give everybody a live performance every time, you know, it's really helped me step my game up.
00:46Today was very inspiring. I was able to spend the day with Laina and this is my first time actually having a mentee to shadow me.
00:59I thought that Laina, first of all, I love the fact that she's so confident and she wasn't intimidated at all.
01:09Like, she looked at me in the eye when she spoke to me and it seemed like she really knows what she wants, which is something that I appreciate.
01:17Especially since she's a woman and black, I think that all the accomplishments that she had throughout her life is really amazing and I think that she's going to be a great influence on me.
01:28Right now we're at the Ambassador Theater where I'm one of the performers of Chicago the Musical and we're in my dressing room.
01:39Then we came to the theater and I asked her a few questions.
01:42Who inspires you? Like, who did you look up to? Not just as a child but even right now?
01:48Ooh, right now. There are multiple people that I look up to. Of course I would say Oprah. But then I feel like that's kind of like the obvious answer.
01:59For me it's because she has multiple things that she does that she's been able to be successful in.
02:07Whether it's been her as talent on her own TV shows, her as the producer of her own TV shows, her owning the network, her being in movies, the magazine, and the multiple businesses that she has.
02:22I also look up to Tyler Perry. I love the fact that when people didn't give him the opportunity, he made the opportunity.
02:29And he went from being homeless to now he's like this crazy rich person or whatever.
02:34But you know, he started off, you know, in the theater world.
02:37And he makes the time to talk to people like myself, to give advice and stuff like that. Love.
02:43So it's different qualities about them that I've tried to build within myself.
02:48I'm not on their level yet, but I hope to be with them.
02:52Yeah, you will. You will. Me too.
02:55She wasn't afraid to ask questions. She wasn't afraid to show her personality.
02:59And to me, that's the making of a star. That's the person that you bring them to the room and they can get the job.
03:05It's like I can bring a lot of people to the room. I can introduce you to people all day, but you have to get the job.
03:10You have to be, you know, have that personality that somebody will say, you know what, I'm going to give them a chance.
03:15And I feel like she has that.
03:18Okay, my second question is, what are some things that you think I can do that will help me later on in my acting career?
03:26Ooh, I definitely think that you should take as many classes that are available to you in your area.
03:33And do the most performances that you can. So anything that you can audition for, whether it's local theater or whether it's major roles, never look at a part like it's too small.
03:45You know, sometimes things are to help you grow as an entertainer. And the more you perform and the more you do it, the better you get.
03:53One thing that I can take away from Miss Candy was that don't wait to do what you want to do. Do it as soon as you can.
04:01Like, since I'm really young and I want to be on Broadway, I need to start doing classes and getting on the stage.
04:08I don't want to wait until I get older because I might miss the opportunity.
04:11The last question is, who are some of the people that really helped you get to where you are today?
04:17Ooh. Okay, first of all, I got to give it to my mom. My mom, obviously, she's been my biggest cheerleader since I was a kid.
04:26You know, before I was born, I guess. But she always would say stuff like, oh, if you can conceive the thought, you can make it happen, which I find to be true.
04:35I feel that I speak things into existence for myself. I definitely love my team, my agent, my lawyers.
04:42I know it sounds a little cliche, but they become like a family to me, and we really work to make things happen.
04:50And my business partners, they are my friends as well. I definitely have to say my husband, he pushes me.
04:56You don't want people to always tell you, oh, girl, you're so good, and make me think that you can sit around and just relax.
05:02You need people to motivate you and go harder. You know? So stuff like that is important.
05:08She gave me wonderful answers. I know almost everything about her now. And overall, my day was amazing. I can't wait to see her again.
05:15Maybe someone.
05:21Just being around her and she asking me the questions that she asked me or being able to allow somebody to see what I do during the day,
05:28it was not only fun, but it made me want to share what I learned.
05:36Thank you so much. It's been an amazing day. I can't even explain it.
05:41And it was great meeting you. It was great meeting you, too. I'm glad I got you as my mentee.
