Home Town 2017 - Season 10 Episode 5 - Funky Country House
Transcript
00:00Good morning.
00:02Just another day of making our favorite small town better.
00:05Erin, we got to go, babe.
00:06Go fix some old sad houses.
00:08Ben, let's go.
00:10Growing up, I didn't see what was so special about Laurel.
00:12So every day we make sure our girls see it.
00:15Good morning, Katie.
00:15Hey.
00:16Can you believe we fixed up over 100 houses in Laurel?
00:18There's so much opportunity.
00:20So many unloved houses.
00:22I don't know what is going to go wrong in here today.
00:26I'm sure something.
00:27Girl, the bat just flew through here.
00:29That's not good.
00:31No way.
00:32We're about to see the house for the first time.
00:34This is the best part.
00:35Oh, my God.
00:37Holy cow.
00:38Are you serious right now?
00:40Ben, did you make this?
00:41Yeah, I made this.
00:43The real truth of living and working in your hometown is that you're going to see these people everywhere forever.
00:48It's your superpower, Erin.
00:50Color is her superpower.
00:51It is.
00:52It is perfect.
00:53Every day is different when you're renovating houses in Laurel, Mississippi.
00:59This is a country road.
01:04Yes, it is.
01:04If I've ever seen one.
01:06Pretty.
01:06Yes, it is.
01:08And look, cows, guys.
01:09Cows.
01:10Oh, look, look, look.
01:12Donkeys.
01:13Donkeys.
01:13Donkeys.
01:14Oh, gosh.
01:15I want to go love them.
01:17I love Becky Fargusson so much.
01:20She's a free spirit.
01:21She's incredibly creative.
01:24When my son was born, I was inspired to paint his nursery.
01:29I started attending a decorative painting school.
01:33Someone saw my work, and that was the beginning, and then embarked on a career as a decorative painter.
01:39We've worked with Becky on lots of projects in the past, most recently the Henderson house and Rose Myers house, and the Tomorazos.
01:48Look at that old barn down there.
01:50Yeah.
01:51Now that is cool.
01:52I grew up in Laurel, had a magical childhood here.
01:58I wound up moving off to New York City, where I stayed for 20 years.
02:03She left Laurel when she was young because she had a modeling contract.
02:06Mmm.
02:08And somehow I wound up in New Orleans, but I wound up in Santa Fe, New Mexico four years after that.
02:15Finally, I am back in my hometown of Laurel, Mississippi.
02:20I'm starting over again.
02:23Laurel is making a lot more noise now that you're back.
02:28I want my life to be simple.
02:31I want happiness.
02:32I want a country house.
02:34I am looking to spend no more than $200,000.
02:38I want something little.
02:41This first house for showrunner is actually in Ellisville, and it is country living at its finest.
02:46I mean, I don't come out this way a lot.
02:47We're very outside of town.
02:49Well, it's definitely the country.
02:51Yeah.
02:52This here is the Elsie house.
02:54It's really cute.
02:56It is pretty cute, I think.
02:57It is.
02:58It's just a little bit fair.
03:01It is two bedrooms, one bath, 1,200 square feet.
03:05It's listed for $100,000.
03:061.25 acres come with the house.
03:09Well, it has charm.
03:11When I think of you, I think of texture.
03:13Like, you're not afraid of things being a little bit primitive.
03:15I like funky.
03:17And I think this house could definitely be pushed that direction.
03:20It'd be precious, right?
03:21Oh, that's great.
03:22Landscaping is everything.
03:24Everything here, yeah.
03:26And I would love to add a transparent, honey-colored stain.
03:29Pressure wash the whole thing.
03:30Right.
03:30And adding that stain would bring the wood back to life, I think.
03:33Yeah.
03:34A new front door.
03:35If you had no more window units hanging out of every window.
03:39And we could paint the windows.
03:40New railing on the front porch.
03:42New skirting around the house.
03:43So on the exterior and HVAC everywhere, $25,000.
03:48Okay.
03:48Let's go inside.
03:49Okay.
03:49Becky's going to look at any sort of house and see only the potential.
03:53Because she's got such a creative mind.
03:55She won't be limited by what's there.
03:57Yeah.
03:57She won't even notice what's there unless she likes it.
03:59Come on in.
04:00I think you'll be surprised to find such beautiful floors in this little house, you know?
04:05Oh, yeah.
04:06Yeah, I love the floors.
04:07Oak floors were unexpected.
04:08You know something?
04:09I don't like new, shiny-looking floors.
04:12I like the wood to be kind of funky.
04:15But I know you also have a lot of art, and you need walls to hang it on.
04:18Yes, I do.
04:19A lot of my art, a lot of Richard's art.
04:21Richard was my boyfriend, and we met in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
04:27And he was there for an Oil Painters of America show.
04:31And then four months into our relationship, he was diagnosed with a very rare form of bone marrow cancer.
04:39He passed away last November, and that's when I sold the house that we bought together.
04:45This is a pretty big living room for such a small house.
04:50And then the dining room, right off of it, what if we could add some color and pattern in here, maybe wallpaper?
04:56Uh, I'm a decorative painter.
04:58Mm-hmm.
04:59No wallpaper.
05:00That's true.
05:01No wallpaper.
05:02Maybe some sort of a faux damask.
05:05Ooh, yeah, that would be pretty.
05:07Yeah.
05:07What'd you call me?
05:07It's a flocked, woven upholstery fabric, usually.
05:12I want to do work in my own house, but at the same time, I want to be still surprised.
05:18On the other end of the dining room, we've got our kitchen.
05:22I think that's great.
05:23Yeah.
05:23And it's not huge.
05:24Well, I don't like a big kitchen.
05:26I like something cozy.
05:27We would close off this doorway to the bedroom, and there's another door to the bedroom off the hall.
05:32And then you could have new built-in cabinetry that went all the way into the corner with the fridge built in on the left,
05:38your range and your hood vent above in the center.
05:41Yes.
05:41And then keep everything in the same layout on this side of the kitchen where you still have a peninsula
05:46and two barstools to sit for your grandkids, but then butcher block countertops.
05:51I would love that.
05:51Yes.
05:52Open shelving left and right of the window, keeping the sink where it is,
05:55and new flooring.
05:57Since this flooring doesn't match the old wood floors you like in the rest of the house,
06:00I think that would be terrific.
06:01And then I would love to have an antique piece, a piece of furniture in the room that would really be the star style-wise.
06:08Great.
06:09I love it.
06:10So living room, dining room, kitchen, $35,000.
06:14Okay.
06:14That's mostly kitchen.
06:15Right.
06:16Bedroom is right here.
06:17It's, you know, pretty basic room.
06:19It's a good size.
06:20Do you know what I really love in a bedroom, though?
06:23I like a womb-y room.
06:25Is womb-y a word?
06:26A womb-y room.
06:28A womb-y room.
06:29Yes.
06:30You want a room that feels snug.
06:32What that means to me is you've got, like, one color that's on the ceiling, the trim, and the walls.
06:37Love that.
06:37It doesn't make sense for everyone.
06:39Becky can handle it.
06:40She's gonna get drenched.
06:42What a woman.
06:43I love that.
06:44What if it were, like, olive green?
06:46No.
06:47No?
06:48I heard from one of the...
06:49I shouldn't even say this.
06:51No, now I gotta know.
06:52Now I gotta know.
06:53I knew a famous madam once, and she said, oh, you never have green in a bedroom.
06:57What?
06:58Yeah.
06:59She said, never have green.
07:00It makes your skin look bad.
07:01Oh, gosh.
07:03I don't believe that, though.
07:04Well, who are you worried about seeing your skin in the bedroom?
07:06Well, I'm not.
07:07I'm too old for all that.
07:09Monkey business.
07:13Okay, what color?
07:14I love blue in a bedroom.
07:16Deep, dark blue.
07:17Deep, dark blue.
07:18Mm.
07:18Blue.
07:18We can do all that.
07:19Okay.
07:20The bathroom is right here.
07:22Okay.
07:23I think it works, right?
07:24It needs to be gutted.
07:25Have a walk-in, tiled shower on that side.
07:28And then on this side, you need a bigger vanity.
07:30I would love if it were an antique dresser that we convert into a vanity.
07:35For these two rooms?
07:36Yes.
07:36Two-room bathroom, 20 grand.
07:38Great.
07:38Mostly bathroom.
07:39And then painting studio?
07:41Yes.
07:41It's really funky.
07:43That's okay.
07:43Funky is maybe a generous word.
07:45Maybe junky?
07:46It's more junky than funky.
07:48It's pretty junky.
07:49But I kind of like that.
07:50Oh, I do, too.
07:51Like, you could be crazy with the paint.
07:53You could get sloppy.
07:53We could rip all this stuff off of it.
07:56It would be a great little art studio.
07:57Wouldn't it?
07:57It would.
07:58Don't do anything to the floors.
07:59I love them.
08:00Let it be wild.
08:01Great for a studio.
08:04It's pretty great.
08:05It's all about that.
08:06Look, it's a lake.
08:08Isn't that beautiful?
08:09I want water on the property.
08:11I want water.
08:12What if we tore this deck off, we built a whole new porch that wrapped around the entire back
08:18of the house?
08:18Uh-huh.
08:19I have steps down to the backyard.
08:20We notched the deck around this crape myrtle here.
08:24Hate to lose that.
08:25Beautiful tree.
08:26I love this detailing on the porch railing.
08:28I would want to continue that pattern.
08:30I like having a little fire pit.
08:32Planting some shrubs that would work around this porch.
08:35And more trees to just give it a little bit of shade.
08:39Make this the private, secluded and beautiful area where you hang out outside.
08:45I can just see me and my girlfriends hanging out back here.
08:49Oh, this is great.
08:49So back here, painting studio, bag deck, 20 grand.
08:54Okay.
08:55All the renovations for the LZ house, 100 purchase price, 100,000 renovation, 200,000.
09:01Right on the button.
09:02I think, let's go to the next house, keep an open mind, because it's very different from
09:06this.
09:06Call it a blank canvas, Erin.
09:08Sure.
09:09Y'all are artists.
09:09Very blank.
09:10Use our imagination.
09:15I almost called those back there, those calves, puppy cows.
09:18Puppy cows?
09:19I was thinking, look at that sweet puppy cow.
09:23Well, there she is.
09:25There she is.
09:27It's very rural out here.
09:29That's what you want.
09:29That's what I want.
09:30We are in the country.
09:32Welcome to the Perrette house.
09:36I think it has a lot of potential.
09:39Okay.
09:40I mean, I know it looks kind of like a little brick box, but no, it's just been great.
09:45It's two bedrooms, two baths, 1,100 square feet, listed for $125,000.
09:50But the best thing about this house to me is it's got two acres here with it.
09:54I want to be able to open the back door.
09:56I get it.
09:56Let my dog out, let her play.
09:59Yeah.
09:59And then if my grandchildren are with me, I can just open the door and let them go play.
10:04I can see where this could be great.
10:06Yeah.
10:06I don't believe you.
10:09Well, listen, I am excited by what it could be.
10:14What do you think about?
10:16Yes.
10:17Yes?
10:17Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.
10:19I love it.
10:20It has a lot of potential to have personality.
10:23Yes.
10:23Painting the whole house this deep olive color.
10:27Yes.
10:28And the trim, a bronzy color that works with the windows.
10:31Right.
10:31But you've spent a lot of time in Santa Fe, places out west, these little houses that
10:36have very little ornament.
10:39Right.
10:39And then you'll find it in unexpected places.
10:41And so I would love to find this solid wood carved front door.
10:46Uh-huh.
10:46I love it.
10:47I love that idea.
10:47Good.
10:48Landscaping will help enormously, too.
10:50Right.
10:51All this on the exterior, $25,000.
10:53Let's go inside where it is an even more blank canvas.
10:56Okay.
10:57Can hardly wait.
10:58Yeah, watch that step.
11:03Come on in.
11:04I mean, so blank.
11:07You know, this is amazing how big this looks.
11:10I would have expected eight-foot ceilings and being very cramped.
11:14This is scored concrete.
11:15Obviously, it's been stained or painted white.
11:18Painted.
11:19I think we could stain or paint it a terracotta color.
11:22I would love a warm color on the walls, something that feels very weak, golden.
11:28I don't know how you feel about a dining room.
11:30You know, for the amount of times that I have dinner parties, I don't need a dining room.
11:36Okay, that's very helpful.
11:37This little area by the kitchen, that would be a perfect little studio.
11:41It's the perfect spot.
11:42I don't know about the fireplace.
11:45I like the idea of the warmth of a fireplace.
11:48If we can make it feel better in the house, you'd like it, you think?
11:52I think so.
11:52Come look at the kitchen, because you really can't see it at all.
11:55And it's not your style at all, so just ignore all that.
11:58That's okay.
11:59But don't worry about that.
12:01You got a great big pantry.
12:02You don't even need kitchen cabinets.
12:04When I think of you, very eclectic.
12:07This whole Santa Fe vibe, I think of if the kitchen could feel like an assemblage of just
12:13antique pieces versus cabinets.
12:15Right.
12:15Built-in cabinetry is a fairly modern invention.
12:19And for Becky to feel like at home in this very newish house, I think we have to go back
12:25in time with some things.
12:26I would love to get reclaimed wood and have our cabinet maker use that to build what looks
12:31like very primitive furniture that's sitting there.
12:33Yes, yes, yes.
12:34That doesn't really look like any cabinetry we've ever done before.
12:37I love it.
12:38I really lean toward an organic look.
12:41Yes.
12:41This would all be gone, right?
12:43We would not have a wall between these rooms.
12:45So this would become a peninsula with your range in the middle.
12:49And you have barstool seating on the backside of that.
12:52I would love to do stone countertops that just feel plain, no gloss.
12:57And then the sink has to stay here.
12:59You'll still want a dishwasher.
13:00And then how do you feel about if we just had simple open shelves on this wall?
13:05I love open shelving.
13:06And then you can hang copper pots from rails on this wall.
13:10Your refrigerator would be built in at the end of this cabinetry before the painting area.
13:17Right now, this is sheet vinyl.
13:19So we take this up and I just want to continue that terracotta stained or painted color throughout.
13:26That's great.
13:27And, oh, I have fantastic tiles that I brought from Santa Fe.
13:32What colors are in them?
13:33It's a terracotta tile and they have a kind of a floral.
13:37Oh, yeah.
13:38She's lived all these amazing places and she brought pieces of it every time she moved.
13:43And it's all there for us to use.
13:45Everything from the front door to here, $35,000 is what we're allotting to it, okay?
13:50That'd be great.
13:51Yeah.
13:51You want to go look at bathroom?
13:52Yes.
13:53Let's go down the hall.
13:53Let's go see the bathroom.
13:54All right.
13:55It's a short little walk down the hall and it's pretty shrimpy in here.
13:59We're going to look sunburned in here.
14:01What a color.
14:02And then the bathroom, the layout the way it is, but just take all this out.
14:06That shower's going to go, right?
14:08We could definitely take the shower out.
14:09Because guess what?
14:11I have more tiles.
14:12What color?
14:13Blue.
14:13Blue?
14:14Blue.
14:14Well, then I don't have to make your room blue or they could both be blue.
14:18How can't they both be blue?
14:19It would be like color drench.
14:20Oh, I love it.
14:21A jewel box.
14:22Yes.
14:23We've got $15,000 allotted back here.
14:25Yeah.
14:26Okay.
14:26For the bedroom and bathroom.
14:27Okay.
14:28I haven't actually stepped on this.
14:31Look at this creek.
14:32This is country living.
14:34No, it's heaven.
14:36I want this house.
14:37For real?
14:38For real, for real?
14:38Y'all, I really love the other house and I loved your ideas, but this house speaks to me.
14:42This is home.
14:43I love the location.
14:45I love the feel of the inside.
14:47It's so airy and I just see myself here.
14:51Before we fully commit, let's talk about the numbers, okay?
14:54With it being a smaller budget, both houses came out to be the same price.
14:58That's because we have to use every single penny to give you what you want.
15:01Listed for $125,000, all the renovations.
15:04I made it easy, $75,000.
15:06Uh-huh.
15:06So it'd be $200,000.
15:08We're good.
15:09Okay.
15:09We're good.
15:10Like, I like this house, but it's a lot of sheetrock.
15:12Yeah.
15:13I want your help making it feel more worn.
15:15Can we do a little something?
15:17Well, what about a really beautiful wall treatment?
15:21Yeah.
15:21I've definitely never asked one of my homeowners to come paint her own house.
15:26That's Becky, okay?
15:28Her expertise.
15:29And I'm somewhere here.
15:31We're going to want to go there.
15:32Like, if she's going to do this treatment on the living room walls,
15:35then I feel an enormous amount of pressure to meet her at her level.
15:40So excited!
15:41I love that.
15:42Group one!
15:43I'm really excited about this little house.
15:46Little ones are where we shine, you know?
15:48Oh, I love it.
15:49Working with Becky will push me to do things I haven't done before.
15:53But it will also be the most fun push.
15:55Yes.
15:56Not a lot to demo here.
16:08It's all right.
16:09Pretty wide open.
16:10Good day for the ladies to miss.
16:11Where's Katie?
16:12I think she's got the flu.
16:14Aaron is also at home with a sick kid.
16:16Mae is totally fine, but Helen's been running fever.
16:18You got any sick kids here lately?
16:20Just my wife.
16:21Sick of you?
16:22Just kidding.
16:22I don't think you are.
16:31So today we're making the entire kitchen out.
16:34It's awfully tight.
16:39Yeah.
16:40Look at that.
16:41I can't believe after all these years, this is the first time I've come to your shop.
17:02And I got lost trying to get here.
17:03And it's so close to Laurel.
17:05It's just like five minutes away.
17:06I just thought that it was going to be further, so I drove right by your road.
17:09Oh, okay.
17:09Well.
17:10Greg Bell has been building cabinets for us for years, but he always builds in his shop
17:15and then brings them on site.
17:16Oh, got the wood.
17:17This is ours.
17:18That's the one you sent.
17:19They brought it yesterday.
17:20See, I think it has so much character, and it's going to make Becky's kitchen so awesome.
17:25We got reclaimed wood.
17:27I don't want these to feel like builder-grade cabinetry.
17:30It needs to feel distinct and Becky.
17:33I am excited about that wood, but I hope that it's enough, because what I really want
17:38are kitchen cabinets to feel rustic, more primitive.
17:44Okay.
17:45And I want to do...
17:45You even go get a piece of wood so you can assimilate it?
17:47Yes.
17:47Yes.
17:47Let's look at it.
17:48I think they're just interesting, and it adds another layer of texture and warmth in this house
17:52that is really just a box.
17:54We're looking for all the texture and warmth we can find.
17:57Are there nails?
17:58Some.
17:58It's all right.
17:59We'll pull them things out.
18:01Love.
18:01So then, if that's a drawer front, these would be handles on drawers.
18:06Yeah.
18:06Using leather straps.
18:07These expose hinges for our doors.
18:10And I want everything to be smooth.
18:12I don't want it to be splintery rustic.
18:13Yeah, yeah.
18:14It's just...
18:15Don't plane it, but just sand.
18:16Yes.
18:17Can you completely build the cabinets from this so the structure comes from this,
18:21or do we not have enough?
18:22How do you do this?
18:24We'd have to do it out of plywood and attach this to the plywood.
18:26Okay.
18:27Now my question is, we don't normally do inset drawers and doors because it's more expensive.
18:34Right.
18:34But this kitchen is so small.
18:36It won't be that big a deal.
18:38Really?
18:39No.
18:39Modern cabinetry always has overlay doors and drawers.
18:43But the reason we're seeing such a big return to people wanting inset drawers and doors is because that's how antique furniture was constructed.
18:50That's right.
18:51I think that's going to be key to making this feel really unique.
18:54Yeah.
18:55An antique-ish.
18:55Becky is going to flip out.
18:58I keep trying, baby, but there's nothing I can say to you.
19:08Make you understand why I do the things that I do.
19:16So I did the design on my computer and I sent it over to this computer.
19:28I don't even know how to turn any of this on.
19:29So the fact that you're doing this, this is going to be the coolest thing about the exterior of the house.
19:34Today, Erin is building a door.
19:37Well, hold on.
19:39I designed panels for a door.
19:41So I used my normal design software that I used for graphic design to come up with the pattern.
19:47This is the floral pattern that was on that tile that Becky got in New Mexico.
19:52In, like, Spanish door design, I saw lots of stars that were carved into it.
19:57So I thought that would be nice.
19:58All in three days, this is how it should carve.
20:01Oh, okay.
20:02The star is raised.
20:03The star is raised.
20:04And then this portion is full depth.
20:06Yeah.
20:06This will look like a hand-carved door.
20:09That's my hope.
20:10But we're doing it all on the CNC.
20:12Uh-huh.
20:12The CNC uses a computer to make precise cuts in wood, metal, plastic.
20:18So it'll fit in.
20:19Perfect.
20:20You ready?
20:20Let's start.
20:30The front door on Becky's house makes no sense with anything that we're doing.
20:35This door is really the statement maker that tells you everything about what to expect when you walk inside.
20:40I want it to feel like we found architectural salvage, a door we maybe picked up somewhere in Santa Fe, Mexico, Spain.
20:49Look at this.
20:51Oh, my gosh.
20:53Look.
20:53It's like...
20:54Look at that.
20:55This is so cool.
20:58Like, the house is just so ordinary.
21:00And things like this will make the house extraordinary.
21:03Hey, Fran.
21:14How are you?
21:15I'm good.
21:15How are you?
21:16Hi.
21:17It's my house.
21:18It's still there.
21:19A work in progress.
21:20I'm driving back from Santa Fe.
21:22I did this really great project there.
21:25Are you driving right now while you're talking to me?
21:28Are you driving?
21:29No, no, no, no.
21:30I'm going to rest stop.
21:31Okay, good.
21:32No, no.
21:32And Betty says hello.
21:34Hey, Betty.
21:35When am I going to be able to paint my living room?
21:38You can start soon.
21:42We're so not there yet.
21:45We got to take other steps before she can start her steps.
21:48Well, the painters have to do the base coat, and then the kitchen has to get built.
21:53Well, it is going to have to be impeccably timed, so she doesn't see too much.
21:58We normally don't invite the homeowner to come and work on a project.
22:02Normally, they see it at the very end, but I will text you when we are a week out.
22:07Okay.
22:07Well, I look forward to it.
22:08I'm excited about it.
22:09I do.
22:10It's going to be so good.
22:12Where are you staying in the meantime?
22:13I am staying at my friend Cynthia's basement in her little basement apartment.
22:20It's going to be really good.
22:21It will be worth the wait.
22:22Great.
22:23I'm looking forward to it.
22:24All right.
22:25Bye.
22:25We miss you.
22:26All right.
22:27Bye.
22:27There may be some things we can move around to speed things up.
22:30But we're talking, you know, a day or two, not a week.
22:34Yeah.
22:40The cabinets are here.
22:42Oh, man.
22:42It looks really, really old.
22:45Because it is.
22:58You found them.
22:59Good morning.
23:00Yes, I did.
23:01What do you think?
23:02Aren't they pretty?
23:03They are.
23:03They're great.
23:04Becky got them in New Mexico, and she's been saving them for a rainy day.
23:08This blue.
23:10A lot of blues.
23:10It's a lot of blues.
23:11That's going to be the color of this bedroom.
23:13She wants it to be womb-like, where it's just rich, dark color everywhere.
23:19The bathroom is going to have that same color drench with the tile.
23:22And I think it's going to be very unique.
23:25This house is going to be different than anything we've ever done.
23:27We've color drenched rooms before, but not in deep indigo blue.
23:30Okay.
23:31So imagine the terracotta color on the floor, the vanity here that's stained wood, it's going
23:37to feel kind of primitive.
23:39And then the copper sink in that, and then this on our floor.
23:43That would be great.
23:44The blue tile up the wall.
23:47And terracotta grout.
23:48And terracotta grout.
23:49That's going to go great.
23:51Putting my best foot forward.
23:53Understanding this more than me.
23:56Stuck in the middle of a midnight crisis.
24:00Deshawn and I are trying to figure out the brackets on the front of the house.
24:04Hey, girl.
24:05Hey.
24:05You are just who we needed.
24:07These are the brackets for this little porch here.
24:09Mm-hmm.
24:10The intent is to push the house in towards more of a little, like, southwestern direction.
24:15The brick is going to be painted that olive green color.
24:17This will be an accent.
24:19Okay.
24:19And anyway, these are not really the point of the front porch, you know?
24:22They're just the frame for the picture, which is the door, which I thought we were going
24:26to install today.
24:27Are we going to still install it?
24:28Yeah, the door's here.
24:28It's here?
24:29The door's in there.
24:30Oh, I want to see.
24:30You haven't seen it finished, ever.
24:31No, I haven't.
24:32It's sealed and everything.
24:33Oh, my gosh.
24:35It's so good.
24:37So it's got a spar varnish on it.
24:39It's heavy.
24:40Which is glossy.
24:41I know we don't like that, but...
24:43I don't know it'll weather.
24:44It looks so good.
24:45Can we put it up?
24:46Yeah.
24:50Oh, my gosh.
24:57Yes!
24:58Oh, my gosh.
25:00Look what we have done.
25:03It looks so good.
25:03Doesn't it look awesome?
25:05This house was so boring, and look how cool it is now.
25:08Yeah.
25:08It's so good, then!
25:11It changes everything.
25:12I mean, it will, once the house is painted.
25:14I don't know.
25:14I feel like it changes it a lot already.
25:16I'm kind of worried about this, though.
25:18The bracket?
25:19You want it to match the door?
25:20Yeah, I want it to match the front door.
25:22Do you have any more Spanish cedar?
25:24I got tons of it.
25:24Okay, yeah.
25:25Do Spanish cedar, then.
25:26Okay.
25:26Troy's about to pull up with the Spanish cedar.
25:37Troy's our new Deshaun.
25:38He's brand new, fresh out of college.
25:40He's a little baby.
25:41Here comes his baby truck.
25:43Look at that little truck.
25:43His truck's even smaller than Deshawn's was.
25:50Troy's bringing the rest of the Spanish cedar to make the brackets.
25:54Just lay them up there, please.
25:55What year were you born, Troy?
25:572001.
25:59Jeez.
25:592001.
26:06We're going to build these brackets, see if I can show these whippersnappers a thing or two.
26:11I'm kind of getting stressed out about the fact that Becky hasn't come to do the wall treatment yet.
26:15The house is going to be done before she ever gets here.
26:16I know. The house is going to be done.
26:17She painted on the reveal day.
26:26Becky has to have that base coat of paint in order to do her decorative painting,
26:30and that just got done in the last two days.
26:32So we had to say, just come as soon as they're done painting.
26:36Hey, y'all.
26:37We are going to have this ready in the nick of time.
26:42We have to finish modifying Becky's vanity today because...
26:46The countertop guys are coming, and they're installing the kitchen countertops
26:49and that top on this vanity.
26:51And Becky...
26:53...is on her way.
26:55...is on her way because she's doing the paint treatment today.
26:58She's got the light waiting until the last minute.
27:00Correct.
27:01Make sure it fits and all.
27:03Ooh!
27:04Oh, it's so good!
27:06The veining has so much depth and texture.
27:09There's a little bit of brown that connects with this wood.
27:12It looks so expensive.
27:15But when you get a little remnant, it's not.
27:17When you have a small area to work with, you can be rich with details.
27:22You can actually spend more money on finer things.
27:25Because you don't need as much.
27:26With a small house, you can do something like reclaimed wood kitchen cabinet.
27:30And then she gave us the towel, so that was free.
27:33We can towel the entire kitchen wall.
27:35We never get to do that.
27:36Rarely.
27:37It's very expensive.
27:38Unless it's free.
27:40Have you seen the paint in the bedroom and bathroom?
27:42No, but I'll come and look while they get that ready.
27:44It's very woody.
27:44I think I'll move in a minute.
27:45Okay.
27:46All right.
27:46Come look at this.
27:49Whoa.
27:50He's never done anything like this.
27:52And it's so Becky.
27:53It's going to be a sleepy ride.
27:54Yeah.
27:55It's so good.
27:56This is awesome.
27:57Isn't it?
27:58Ooh!
27:58Okay.
27:58Countertops.
27:59Yeah.
28:00Becky is going to be here to start doing her treatment on the walls.
28:03I was trying to cover the door so that she doesn't see it.
28:06Oh, my gosh.
28:07We need to cover all this as soon as they get the countertops in.
28:11Erin, this was poor planning.
28:13I know it was poor planning.
28:16I wanted Becky to get started with her decorative painting like two weeks ago,
28:20so she wouldn't have seen cabinets.
28:22She wouldn't have seen the front door.
28:23I wish that she had come, you know, a week or two ago.
28:26What all is she painting?
28:28All of this.
28:30You know, she's going to see the cabinet.
28:32She's going to see the countertop, because that's all coming today.
28:36We have to super hurry, because she's about to be here,
28:38and I've got to cover all this up.
28:40Okay, that looks great.
28:43Can you come back and glue it later?
28:45Let me just cover it up.
28:46I love the chiseled edge.
28:48So, so good.
28:49Hey, Becky's here.
29:03I'm going to go talk to Becky.
29:04You got this.
29:05So the house is all hers for three days.
29:07She's not going to take the plastic wrap off.
29:09She better not.
29:10She's going to follow the rules.
29:12Okay.
29:14There's nothing you can see that will be exciting.
29:18We've covered everything.
29:19Okay.
29:20I love the color.
29:21This is right.
29:22This is the base color.
29:23Beautiful, beautiful.
29:23Yeah, exactly what I wanted.
29:25This is your builder-grade box.
29:26Now, how do we make it have character?
29:28Well, we're going to put a visual texture on it,
29:31and it's going to kind of mimic Venetian plaster.
29:36We picked the most boring house in the world for her
29:38because I know that she can make it custom.
29:40She can give it patina and age and beauty and texture.
29:44You don't have to, we haven't painted the floors yet,
29:46so you don't have to, it's not precious.
29:48Okay, great.
29:49We're going to layer three different colors.
29:51I have to do one color completely before I add the next color.
29:55Do you build from your darkest to your light?
29:57I go dark to light.
29:58I just think it's richer-looking buildup,
30:00and I also use different sheens.
30:02Yeah, that's cool.
30:03Okay.
30:04Now, what I like to do,
30:06I'm going to come down here like this.
30:11Like that, right?
30:12Okay, uh-huh.
30:13And then I love, I'm going to tap it and come up.
30:20Tap it and come down.
30:24Cross.
30:24Oh.
30:26The way she's doing this,
30:28I mean, have you ever seen a picture
30:29of her New Orleans apartment?
30:31Nope.
30:32It looked ancient.
30:32It looked like somewhere in France.
30:35It feels almost like it's velvet.
30:36It's almost plaster.
30:37It's almost suede.
30:39It's just the most subtle and rich warmth.
30:43This house has none of that,
30:44and we need so much of that to make it look like Becky.
30:47But one thing you don't want to see
30:49are real distinct start and stop marks like that.
30:53See that?
30:54Uh-huh, uh-huh.
30:54I'm going to go ahead and pull that out.
30:56I feel like I'm back in art school.
30:58I'm 19, and you're my teacher, and I'm loving it.
31:01When this is finished,
31:02there'll be some people that'll say,
31:03oh, it looks like suede.
31:06You know, it's all left up to interpretation.
31:07I think what you do looks kind of like velvet.
31:09I'm going to see how you do with this.
31:11I'm going to load this for you,
31:12because I don't want you to overload.
31:13Get it just right.
31:14Here we go.
31:15No, no, come over here.
31:16Okay.
31:17Come right over here.
31:18There you go.
31:20Don't come down so far.
31:21Okay, no, you got right.
31:23Let's go right about there.
31:24Okay.
31:25Okay.
31:25Start tapping it out, girl.
31:27It's going to dry fast.
31:28The next color, I'll go over that,
31:30and then the last color,
31:32I will probably do the entire wall with it.
31:35You want to get it all out.
31:37Come straight across.
31:38Okay, like that?
31:39Yeah.
31:40You did great for your first time.
31:42Okay.
31:42Feel free to spray it and start it.
31:44No, it'll be fine.
31:45All right.
31:45How much time do you feel like you need?
31:47This will not be more than three days.
31:49Hopefully, I will be done tomorrow afternoon.
32:06Becky's house moving right along.
32:08Walls are done inside.
32:10Cabins are almost done.
32:11I'm actually dropping off drawer boxes for Greg
32:13so he can keep going.
32:15Trying to sort out the boards here.
32:17Got dart walnut.
32:18We got cherry.
32:19This one feels weird, doesn't it?
32:20Yeah.
32:21The grain pattern is just too bold and too different.
32:24Do we have enough of other hardwood
32:26so we don't have to use the pine?
32:28We can find enough.
32:29If we could do that, I think that would be great.
32:31Yeah.
32:38Becky's moving in in a couple days.
33:00We are so done.
33:02The inside is totally done.
33:04And now it's just landscaping and moving in her furniture
33:08and that's when everything is going to just totally transform.
33:10Becky is in everything.
33:20She's never lived in this house
33:22but it looks like she has for so many years.
33:24And we're just so lucky that she had amazing things
33:28that we could add to the house.
33:30It's a little flight of fancy everywhere.
33:32Richard Cooper was Becky's partner.
33:35He passed and he was one of the most gifted artists.
33:39And his artwork is everywhere in this house.
33:42So she feels close to him.
33:43Even if he's not here, he's still here.
33:46He's everywhere.
33:48This house is so specific.
33:51It is so Becky.
33:52It's not meant to please everyone who sees it.
33:57This has been, I think, Erin's favorite project.
34:00It's been so transformative.
34:01I care about what speaks directly to the heart
34:05of the person who's going to live here.
34:07And I'm really, really proud of this house.
34:09I think you're going to love it.
34:11All right, welcome to the Fargason house.
34:15This is fabulous!
34:17Oh my God, y'all.
34:19Can you help me?
34:20No, I don't.
34:26This is wonderful.
34:27Oh my gosh.
34:29I can't believe you did this.
34:34It is beautiful.
34:36It's beautiful.
34:39I've had the best time on this house.
34:42I love it.
34:44The color, everything is perfect.
34:46The landscaping, I love it.
34:48Good.
34:49It needed something.
34:50I love your planters that we could just nestle in with all the new landscaping.
34:58It's all perfect.
35:00Oh, is that good?
35:00It's all perfect.
35:01It's wonderful.
35:02Did you notice the front door?
35:03Yes, it's great.
35:05It's great.
35:05Where did that come from?
35:06I built that.
35:07I wanted to get you, like, one of those great reclaimed carved Spanish doors.
35:12Very expensive.
35:13Your doorway had to be an exact size, you know?
35:15Right.
35:15So we couldn't find an old one and make it work.
35:18Right, right.
35:18So we had to make a new one.
35:19We did the carvings on our CNC at the factory.
35:22But I designed them.
35:23With Aaron designed them.
35:23Because it's connected to something that's inside the house as well.
35:26Oh, that's right.
35:27That's right.
35:27Yeah.
35:28I think it's the first time I've ever built a front door.
35:30It's beautiful.
35:32I love that the roof actually is really rough and patented.
35:36I like old and weathered.
35:37I know.
35:38I like my man that old.
35:42The house had absolutely no personality.
35:44It had none.
35:45And now it's my little beautiful country cottage that I've always dreamed of.
35:50I know you've seen the inside.
35:51You've painted the walls.
35:53I did, but everything was covered up, so I couldn't see what you had done.
35:57Now's the time.
35:58Well, let's see it.
35:59Let's go.
36:00I love all of your stuff.
36:02This is what made it so great.
36:07Oh, my gosh.
36:11Y'all, it's fabulous.
36:17Oh, this is wonderful.
36:19I can't believe it.
36:20Oh, no, I can't.
36:21It's fabulous.
36:23We shopped at Becky R Us.
36:25Uh-huh.
36:26Every single thing.
36:28I love it.
36:28I love every single thing.
36:30I love all your things.
36:33All of your rugs, your walls.
36:35I forgot about the walls.
36:37It is spectacular.
36:38Yeah.
36:39It is spectacular, yes.
36:40Yeah.
36:41I love it.
36:41I love it.
36:42I love it.
36:42I love it.
36:43Your art, Richard's art, it's everywhere because it's amazing.
36:53And we did tiny updates on the fireplace.
36:55Now you don't even notice the things that we didn't love about it before.
36:58Right.
36:59I'm over the moon.
37:01You can see the kitchen from here.
37:03I'm stunned.
37:05It is staggering.
37:07So full of the hills.
37:09Your tile is everything.
37:11The details from this kitchen are everything.
37:14And the reclaimed wood on all your cabinetry.
37:17Yes.
37:18This is something that Erin has wanted to do for a long time.
37:21This is a random mix of wood.
37:23That we got for almost nothing.
37:26And Mr. Gregg has never done anything like this before in a kitchen.
37:29It absolutely works.
37:31Oh, look at this.
37:32Isn't that cool?
37:33Uh-huh.
37:33I think it turned out so you.
37:35And look at these countertops.
37:37Uh-huh.
37:37This more organic chiseled edge on your countertops felt right.
37:41And you have tons of seating.
37:43I do.
37:44By even one on the end.
37:45Yes.
37:46It's perfect.
37:47We wanted the kitchen to feel like an unfitted kitchen, even if it wasn't practical for this layout.
37:51We have inset drawers and doors, and we could afford to do it in this kitchen because it was so small.
37:56It's just finished beautifully.
37:57I don't know what else to say.
37:59I love your tiles so much.
38:01Oh, thank you for using them.
38:03Find a place for them.
38:04I've been in love with this tile forever, and I've wanted to use it.
38:07And here it is.
38:08And this is the design that I replicated in the door.
38:11I see.
38:12Okay.
38:13These four are the colors.
38:14Right, yes.
38:15And the stars in the middle.
38:16You've been able to use all the things that I love and that I love to live with.
38:21It feels like home.
38:23God, I'm going to be so happy here.
38:25Ah, I hope you will.
38:27Oh, I will.
38:27I will.
38:28I'm going to be so happy.
38:29Turn on that light and open the pantry.
38:31Oh, terrific.
38:33I love this color.
38:34Oh, yes.
38:35So wonderful.
38:36There's so much storage in it.
38:38And the color is beautiful.
38:39And then right off your kitchen, you have your studio.
38:45It's great.
38:45I can just see myself sitting here, looking out.
38:48Got lots of natural light.
38:50And look, there's a photo of Richard.
38:52Mm-hmm.
38:52I love that picture.
38:54And these floors are not precious.
38:56They're great.
38:57I love them.
38:57Perfect.
38:58This is terracotta on a budget.
39:00It's great.
39:01Well, it was mostly made possible by the fact that you came and used your own time to make
39:05the house have so much character with the treatment on the walls.
39:09I want you to go see your bed womb.
39:11Yeah.
39:11My bed womb?
39:12Mm-hmm.
39:13Your womb-y womb.
39:13My womb-y womb?
39:14Yeah.
39:17Oh.
39:18Oh.
39:20Oh.
39:20This is absolutely gorgeous.
39:28People will see this room, and a lot of them will say, I cannot handle that.
39:31It's too dark.
39:32The ceilings are too dark.
39:34Everything's too dark.
39:35I say it is rich and layered and very moody and-
39:39It's womb-y.
39:41Womb-y.
39:42It's womb-y.
39:42It is so beautiful.
39:46And that painting is the greatest thing.
39:49I loved painting it.
39:51Oh.
39:51And I want one of my kids now.
39:52I love your grandchildren.
39:54They are beautiful.
39:55You want your children there.
39:57I want one.
39:57Yeah.
39:57Okay.
39:58And all of Richard's art, it's just pitch perfect.
40:00It is.
40:01It's beautiful.
40:02I'm so happy to have it around here.
40:04We met at the Cowgirl.
40:06That's where we met on Halloween.
40:08I love that.
40:09Yeah.
40:09And then the forest out the windows.
40:11Yes.
40:11I am in the woods, and this is what I wanted.
40:15Y'all, this is just gorgeous.
40:17The bathroom.
40:18Okay.
40:18Let's see it.
40:20Oh, my gosh.
40:23Look at this.
40:24Look at my shower.
40:26And the tiles.
40:27Oh, my gosh.
40:28They're gorgeous.
40:29I am so happy you didn't use white.
40:32Yes.
40:32That's what I was about to say.
40:33Oh, gosh.
40:34The terracotta ground is perfect.
40:37Oh, yes.
40:38This is beautiful.
40:39And look.
40:40Oh, look at here.
40:41Yeah.
40:42It feels like your kitchen.
40:43Oh, my heavens.
40:45I love it.
40:46And this was a really expensive stone.
40:48But because we just had a remnant, it was nothing.
40:50It's fabulous.
40:52That was the trick of your house, because it's small.
40:54We could do expensive finishes here.
40:56Right.
40:57Yes.
40:57I love the gray toilet.
40:59We've never had one before.
41:00It's terrific.
41:01It's terrific.
41:02A white one just felt wrong.
41:04It's, this is beautiful.
41:06Okay.
41:06Stunning.
41:07I feel like this house is just so you.
41:09It is so me.
41:16Oh, look, y'all.
41:18Look how beautiful.
41:19You can hear the lawnmowers.
41:20My creek.
41:21Oh, my grandchildren are going to have the best time ever.
41:24Mm-hmm.
41:25Magical.
41:26You have so many beautiful things.
41:29Your collected life just looks gorgeous visually.
41:32Oh, thank you.
41:34But you guys nailed it.
41:36I'm so glad you love it.
41:37I love it.
41:38You gave us $200,000 to do this with.
41:40The house was $125,000.
41:42The renovation was $75,000, but it feels like...
41:44Every bit of $150,000.
41:46I was going to say the renovation feels like $200,000.
41:49It looks like it.
41:50We knew a great decorative painter who really added some depth and richness to these rooms.
41:55It's a wonderful place to start over.
41:57Thanks for listening.
42:07Bye-bye.
42:07Bye-bye.
42:08Bye-bye.
42:09Bye-bye.
42:10Bye-bye.
42:10Bye-bye.
42:11Bye-bye.
