00:00Music
00:23She's a legend
00:24The queen of soul
00:25I grew up in the 70's and 80's
00:27So, you know, I look to her for fashion
00:29I grew up listening to her music
00:31as I was a young girl growing up in Harlem
00:34Her music uplifted me, you know
00:36And I still listen to her music today
00:39I've listened to her music with my family
00:41on Thanksgiving, on Christmas
00:43Aretha Franklin to me was more than just an icon
00:46She was an African woman who embodied the spirit
00:49of our community on every conceivable level
00:52that I can think of
00:54She was just an amazing woman
00:59She could do gospel, she could do R&B
01:01She could keep up and cover pop
01:03I saw her singing opera on the show one time
01:06and I was just overblown
01:09Well, I think her vocal ability spoke for itself
01:12She involved herself in enunciating on a whole wide range
01:17of emotions that her people experience
01:20whether it be spirituals
01:22whether it be love songs
01:24She was always a God-given talent
01:27and a robot for the world
01:28I can't think of any singer right now
01:30that had the range and the passion
01:32and the fire that she had
01:35She took such great risks
01:37and I love that in a singer
01:39that you feel their emotional truth
01:42My favorite Aretha Franklin song
01:49Respect
01:50Dr. Feelgood
01:51I haven't found a Dr. Feelgood for myself yet
01:54but you know, I listen to it
01:55Keep Hope Alive
01:56Respect
01:57And not only embody the respect for individuals involved
02:00in personal relationships with each other
02:02but also to respect their communities
02:04and respect their people
02:06Rose is still a rose
02:07Say a Little Prayer For You
02:09Respect is my favorite song
02:11It just gets me so hyped
02:12And it also talks about being a black woman
02:14and having respect for yourself
02:16and telling people you're not afraid to ask for that
02:25She has left a legacy that nobody else has left
02:29Because no one can see Aretha
02:31except Aretha
02:32No matter where she was performing
02:34she was a true diva
02:35whether she was sick or not
02:36you would see her in a gown
02:38and you know, she would put a fur on top of it
02:40walk out on stage
02:41put her purse on the piano
02:43toss her fur off
02:44and do what she had to do
02:45The impact she made to the world
02:47she was just such a lovely person
02:49You aspire to be something like her
02:50You aspire to influence people the way she did
02:53The people who have looked up to her
02:55and that are now out there singing and performing
02:59It's definitely a great loss
03:01We'll miss her here
03:02but she's in heaven now
03:03I live in heaven now
03:04What?
03:06I live in heaven now
03:07You
