00:00I'm Essence Entertainment Director Corey Murray, and today on Essence Now, Lee Daniels gives
00:10us a scoop on all the new seasons of Empire and Star.
00:13Our girl Julie Wilson shows us one of the hottest beauty trends for fall, and music
00:18performs the latest song from his album.
00:21But right now, it's time for the hot list, the biggest stories you're buzzing about today.
00:30Is there trouble in paradise for Tamar Braxton and her manager husband, Vincent Herbert?
00:35In an exclusive interview with E.T., Tamar revealed her next studio album, Bluebird of Happiness,
00:41will be her last so she can focus on her marriage and family.
00:44Here's what she said.
00:46A lot of things that is going on in my relationship and me being close to this music industry,
00:53and whatever I can do to eliminate all of the stress and problems, you know, off of my
00:59relationship, I would rather do that.
01:03Now, some of you Tamar should support her decision.
01:05On Facebook, Shea Pikkeny posted, I would do the same.
01:08Fix the marriage, then come back out.
01:10Best wishes.
01:11But some of you are giving a little side-eye to Tamar's announcement.
01:15Princess Tennessee wrote, I love her voice so much, but let's be real.
01:19If she had major success, there's no way she would stop making albums and touring.
01:24Hopefully, this is a marketing ploy to boost sales and she'll keep on recording.
01:28Not many singers have her kind of tamlet.
01:34Cardi B is out here winning.
01:37Not only has her hit, Bodak Yellow, officially hit number one on the Billboard charts,
01:41making her only the second female rapper in history to do so,
01:44but the video for the song has a whopping 173 million views on YouTube.
01:49And although she's just a regular, jameglar, shmeglar girl from the Bronx,
01:53Cardi says she's ready for more than, she's ready to enjoy some of the perks of her success.
01:58She told the Fadell earlier this year,
02:00I could buy myself a $5,000 dress, but I'm knowing that my cousin needs money for the rent.
02:05And then I got to tell myself, stop feeling guilty.
02:07You worked hard for this.
02:09When I was a stripper, I used to strip like six nights a week.
02:11I used to bust my ass and I didn't stop working until today.
02:14I worked just as hard as I did before.
02:21Y'all's president is still out here tweeting foolishness.
02:24Just this morning, he posted this.
02:26The NFL has all sorts of rules and regulations.
02:29The only way out for them is to set a rule that you cannot kneel during the national anthem.
02:35So Puerto Rico is without water and power,
02:38and North Korea is ready to declare war at any moment,
02:40but you still attacking football players?
02:42And although many of you do support the players who kneel,
02:46some folks are side-eyeing those who choose to lock arms instead.
02:49Insecure star Amanda Seals tweeted,
02:51Locking arms is not taking a knee.
02:54Not protesting is co-signing.
02:56But Jackie Reed disagreed.
02:57She responded,
02:58Every protest won't look the same, and that's okay.
03:02So we're asking you in today's viewer poll,
03:05is locking arms a sufficient way for NFL players to protest police brutality and racism?
03:11Send your comments using hashtag Essence Now,
03:14because we're talking about it next.
03:16It's Tuesday, September 26, and it's time for Essence Now.
03:28Welcome to Essence Now.
03:30I'm Essence Entertainment Director, Corey Murray, filling in for my co-in-lou-voo.
03:34Hey, girl.
03:34Hey, in Durban.
03:35Come talk to us using hashtag Essence Now,
03:38or remember, you can email us anytime at EssenceNow at Essence.com.
03:42All right.
03:43So these NFL protests don't seem to be going in a way anytime soon.
03:48And San Francisco 49ers, Eric Reed,
03:50who was one of the first to join Colin Kaepernick kneeling,
03:53made a really good point about the true purpose for the moment,
03:57movement, excuse me, which is to bring awareness to police brutality and racism.
04:03He wrote,
04:04We chose to kneel because it's a respectful gesture.
04:07I remember thinking our posture was like a flag flown at half mass to mark a tragedy.
04:12It baffles me that our protest is still being misconstrued
04:15as disrespectful to our country, flag, and military personnel.
04:19We chose it because it's exactly the opposite.
04:21Well said, Eric.
04:22Now, while many players have joined the two in kneeling,
04:25recently we've seen teams lock arms, remain seated,
04:28or not even come out of the locker room instead.
04:31So what do you think?
04:32Is locking arms a sufficient way for NFL players to protest police brutality and racism?
04:38Vote A for yes.
04:39You can't tell people how they can protest.
04:42Or B for no.
04:43They should show solidarity by joining Take A Knee.
04:46Send us your votes now, and we'll read the results later in the show.
04:49Now, Kayla, I know a lot of people are buzzing about this online.
04:53What are folks saying?
04:54Already.
04:55So the votes are coming in, and George Armisen says,
04:58Interlocking arms does nothing.
04:59Placing your hand on the back of your teammate as they kneel shows nothing.
05:02And the cowgirls kneeling but standing for the anthem was laughable, he says.
05:05So he's not here for any of it.
05:07But there are some people who support it.
05:08Sharon Green says,
05:09All black NFL players should place a knee on the ground.
05:12Stephanie Love says,
05:13Yes, black players also need to just leave the NBA and start their own football league, she says.
05:17So some people are supporting it.
05:18Well, I agree with B.
05:22Like, I think any form of protest is a form of protest.
05:24I actually thought it was very commendable that the Steelers didn't come out of their locker room.
05:28I thought that was sending just as important of a message.
05:30So that would be my vote.
05:31I agree.
05:32I don't think you'd tell people how to protest.
05:34I think as long as they're there by your side and they're showing that they agree with your message, I say do it.
05:38Yeah.
05:39But keep those votes and comments coming.
05:41And while we'll read more of them later in the show,
05:43Our girls Julie Wilson and Kamara Aye Unique are standing by with some tips for rocking this season's hottest i-trends.
05:50They are so silly right now doing the Millie Rock.
05:53But first, Mako Mvolu caught up with Lee Janiels to get all the tea on this season of Empire and Star.
05:59These characters have gone through so much.
06:08How many more seasons of Empire do you think we have?
06:10How many more seasons?
06:11Yeah.
06:11How many more seasons?
06:12Yeah.
06:14I don't know.
06:15You don't know?
06:15Maybe three, four.
06:16Okay.
06:17I don't know.
06:18As long as I'll keep watching.
06:20Do you know, do you have a vague idea or an idea of where you want the characters to end up?
06:25Uh, I want to do a movie.
06:28Tell me.
06:29Oh, really?
06:29I'm doing a movie about them.
06:30You know what I mean?
06:31I just started thinking that, you know, we were talking, we're all together, uh,
06:36because this show's about to premiere and we're doing press and we're just thinking,
06:39what about, how interesting would it be to, to, to have a movie?
06:42Oh.
06:42You know what I mean?
06:43It's like, just a moment.
06:44Yeah.
06:44Just to, you know, because they're all actors and, you know, they come from, uh, they're all film actors.
06:49So I was thinking about that.
06:50But how, how do I see them ending up?
06:52I don't know.
06:52You know, uh, Lucius and Cookie together.
06:57Together, probably, back together.
06:59Mm-hmm.
06:59And, uh, peace with all the family.
07:02That's how I would like for it to all end up.
07:04Wouldn't it be nice to end up?
07:06Yes.
07:07In a nice red bow.
07:08Yeah.
07:10I'm with it.
07:10It ain't gonna happen like that.
07:11Uh-huh.
07:11But, that's not real life, but we'd like to see that.
07:15I'd like to see that.
07:15But I do love the idea of a movie.
07:17Do you think the movie will be centered around Cookie or?
07:19I don't know.
07:19I have to speak to my partner, Danny.
07:21This is all new.
07:22Oh, this is like in the last.
07:23Just yesterday.
07:23Just yesterday.
07:24Oh.
07:24We just talked about, like, hey, guys, how about a movie?
07:26What do you think?
07:27Mm-hmm.
07:27You know?
07:28Mm-hmm.
07:28So, um, I don't know.
07:30Like, I have to think of subject matter and, you know, what the idea is.
07:33But we do know that these characters are beloved.
07:35Yeah.
07:36I love the way that you and Danny work together, right?
07:38Because, Danny, you and him just seem to vibe and get each other.
07:41It's a good thing to have a good writing partner.
07:44Isn't it, though?
07:44Because he's structurally, he's, like, right in the pocket.
07:47Mm-hmm.
07:47And I come up with these incredible zany characters that really are a part of my life or part of my past.
07:53So the combination is a Molotov cocktail.
07:56I can't do it by myself.
07:58Yeah.
07:58Yeah.
07:58I need a partner because I got many things going around.
08:01Mm-hmm.
08:02So I need one person to keep me focused.
08:04Mm-hmm.
08:04Focused.
08:05Yes.
08:05So I can spread my seed other places.
08:08It's finding the right people around you.
08:09And trusting.
08:10And trusting.
08:10That's it.
08:11Now, going back to what you were saying, though, a lot of it is of Empire, or specifically Lucius,
08:15the stuff that you went through, like, you know, more serious subject matter is getting thrown in the trash can and all of that.
08:22Everybody keeps talking about that, you know.
08:23They do because it was so big.
08:25You know, it's so funny.
08:26Like, it's no different than, you know, my mother beating me with a broom.
08:31You know what I mean?
08:31Where Hakeem was beaten with a broom.
08:34I remember the network was all in an uproar.
08:37This is child abuse.
08:38I said, I guess I was abused then because my mother beat me with a broom.
08:42It is what it is, you know?
08:43People talk about, like, oh, how historic it was, the two men kissing.
08:51Yeah.
08:52But we really, I thought it was just as historic to talk about Andre's problem with mental health.
08:58Because we don't care to talk about it in our culture.
09:01And it's really important to talk about that, as important as it is to talk about homophobia.
09:06How do you face that criticism?
09:09I've been criticized since my early works, since my very first movie.
09:13And that was Monster's Ball.
09:16And Hallie became the first African-American woman to win the Academy Award.
09:20And, you know.
09:21Receipts.
09:22You know, I was like, you know, what can, what do you, how do you, they're going to come for you, no matter what you do.
09:27And you have to hold your head up and know and stand firm in your truth and know that you can look yourself in the mirror at the end of the day.
09:35And my kids.
09:36And I'm like, are you happy with the work?
09:38Are my kids happy with the work?
09:39Is this a legacy that I can live on no matter what?
09:43And there's always going to be some hatred and some making up of some stuff.
09:46So you just, it is what it is.
09:47I remember after I finished Monster's Ball, and they, um, they wanted me to do all these, like, they said, oh, he's a black filmmaker.
09:58And they said, oh, why don't you do, like, Leprechauns from the Hood or Part 7.
10:03I was like, well, what's one, two, three, four, five, six.
10:05I was offered these types of films.
10:07Who's my baby's mama?
10:08That type of stuff.
10:09So I chose to do a film, um, called The Woodsman with Kevin Bacon and Eve and Keira Cedric, which, uh, which is, which addressed pedophilia.
10:19And that was, uh, we won Cannes with that film.
10:22We saw the NFL yesterday and the players kind of banding together.
10:25I'm right, was on my knees with, I'm, was on my knees with, uh, right with them.
10:30Mm.
10:31It's a very depressing time that we're living in.
10:32And I think that some of our best work and some of our best art will be, um, will be, um, produced right now because of it, because of the pain that we're in as African-Americans.
10:44I hope so.
10:44I certainly hope that's the case.
10:46Switching to happier topics, you've been in a relationship with your partner now for-
10:50Too long!
10:51It's not that long, Lee.
10:52It's been seven years.
10:53Yes.
10:54Seven blissful years.
10:55I know.
10:56It's been great.
10:56It's been great.
10:57It's fantastic.
10:58Yeah.
10:58Yeah.
10:58What have you learned about yourself?
11:00That I'm old.
11:01You are not old.
11:0257 years young out here.
11:06What have you learned about yourself and that relationship?
11:08To try to keep it young.
11:10To try to keep it young, because he's much younger than me.
11:13And so between him and my kids, they keep me, they keep me motivated.
11:17They keep me current and they keep me to the streets.
11:21Now your kids are 21 now.
11:2221.
11:23The twins.
11:23Twins, yeah.
11:24I just forget that they are, they are strong versions of me.
11:29So she's in Paris in film school spending all my money.
11:32I love it.
11:33You better spend your daddy's money.
11:35He decided to start modeling.
11:37And all of a sudden, he's like, his first job was with Kanye.
11:41Oh.
11:41And I called Kanye and said, Kanye, did you know that was my son?
11:44No.
11:45So he's just doing it on his own.
11:46Look at that.
11:47He's Abercombry and Fitch.
11:49Is that?
11:49Mm-hmm.
11:49Abercombry and Fitch.
11:50Yeah, that's right.
11:50That's right.
11:51You're a proud dad.
11:52Yes, I am.
11:53So he's doing it all on his own.
11:55And he doesn't really want to model.
11:57He's using it as a vehicle to save money so that he can promote clubs.
12:03Yes.
12:03Whatever that is.
12:04Oh, I love that.
12:05So you and Danny, super young in this relationship.
12:09So I can, do you foresee having children or adapting children or having more children?
12:13No.
12:14No.
12:15You said that in an exasperated way.
12:17No, no.
12:17I want another kid.
12:18I do want another kid.
12:19I think I want one more kid.
12:20I think that I'm a little nervous about bringing anybody into this world right now.
12:24We are in a time where, look, I did this new show, Star, because Taraji, myself, and Terrence,
12:36we both have kids.
12:38They were 19.
12:38And Terrence's kid was, and I don't forget what part of the country, my kid was in D.C.,
12:45Taraji's kid was in L.A.
12:47All three kids were decent kids going to great schools and were in trouble with the law.
12:54And I instinctively felt something was wrong.
12:57This was pre-Trump coming in.
12:59And I knew that something was wrong.
13:01Something was, something dark was happening.
13:03We was going, a dark cloud was coming in.
13:05And so, and that was part of the brewings and the makings of Star.
13:09I knew that we were going to the Black Lives Matters, the issues that we address in Star
13:17were really derivative of what I was feeling like when we collectively got together and
13:23saw that our sons were in trouble.
13:24So, how do you think the reception has been?
13:27Do you think people receive that, you know, the show is entertainment, but there's some
13:31strong messages that are being put out?
13:32In all of my work, there is a message.
13:34There's a message.
13:35There are many messages about how we live, how we communicate.
13:40And in this time right now, I think, yeah, yeah, I think that the message, the message
13:46is that we just have to, you know, there's a reason, I try to, I try to bring faith back
13:52into what we do because along the way, we, I know my kids have forgotten about church, how important it is.
14:02What's up, Essence Now Family, I'm Julie Wilson, Essence Fashion and Beauty Director.
14:09So, unfortunately, summer is officially over, womp, womp, but just like you switch up your clothes
14:15for the seasons, you should do the same for your cosmetics.
14:18Here to show us how to achieve fun fall makeup trends is makeup artist, Kamara A. Unique.
14:24Hey, guys, how are you?
14:27I'm good.
14:28I'm so excited that you're here.
14:29Thank you for having me.
14:30Okay, so all of today's looks,
14:32are going to focus on the eyes, which can be challenging for the casual makeup wearer,
14:36like when your attempt at big, beautiful lashes ends up just doing the most.
14:41So, Kamara, what's a key approach to applying makeup?
14:46The key approach is have fun, play with metallics this fall, have fun with it,
14:51and don't overthink it, and less is more.
14:53Okay.
14:54Yes.
14:54Awesome.
14:55Yes.
14:55Okay, so right now, let's get started.
14:58The first eye makeup trend is all about graphic lining.
15:01Designers like Tome, Marnie, and Versace all featured this trend on their runway shows.
15:07So, Kamara, what are the tools that we need to make sure that we do this amazing graphic eye,
15:13modeled by Sirad?
15:14Yes.
15:15We're going to use an angle brush and a gel eyeliner.
15:19Inglot has a really great one that I love.
15:22Yes, and it doesn't move.
15:24Okay, so how do we actually do this without messing up?
15:26All right, so I'm going to ask Sirad to keep her eyes closed.
15:29But if you're doing it at home, you can keep your eyes open, Sirad, and look straight ahead.
15:33And you're going to line your eyes from the corner and work your way up.
15:37You don't want to go too far out, though.
15:39You don't want to touch the brow bone.
15:41So, it's kind of like you started a cat eye.
15:43Yeah.
15:44Okay.
15:45It's simply a cat eye, but we're going to just smoke it out a little bit and bring it
15:48in.
15:49Perfect.
15:50Then I'm going to work my way, you're going to close your eyes, across the lid.
15:55This is very cool because this is like a very graphic cat eye.
15:58Yeah.
15:59It's a very modern look.
16:00Yeah.
16:01And I feel like it's something I can do.
16:03I feel like when I do cat eyes at home, I usually do a really beautiful one at first, and then
16:09I mess up the other side, and then I end up taking off all the makeup.
16:12So this one is if you mess up, smoke it down, bring it down a little bit.
16:17See I messed up a little bit.
16:18It's not neat.
16:19I love it though.
16:20But it still looks great.
16:21It does look great.
16:22And it gives you a totally different look when her eye is closed and when it's open.
16:25It's like negative space, and then when she opens her eyes, it's like a window.
16:29It gives you a little space for like color, for like eye shadow.
16:33Yeah.
16:34Or you could just leave it.
16:35Leave his face empty and just show off your big beautiful eyes if you have like great eyes.
16:41Are there any colors that we should stay away from?
16:44You're doing this with black right now.
16:45Are there any colors that you're like, uh, it might be too crazy?
16:48I would say try every color.
16:50Have fun with it.
16:51White will be great with this.
16:52Blue will be great.
16:53Black I love because it gives it a little bit more funk and like a little...
16:58It's very chic.
16:59It is.
17:00It is actually.
17:01It is a very chic look.
17:04Would you do this, um, like day, night?
17:09I would do this at night.
17:10Okay.
17:11I wouldn't take this day unless you, unless you have a job that, or like if you work a
17:15nine to five that says come in and live your best life, then do it.
17:18I have that type of nine to five.
17:19Yes.
17:20Then live your best life and kill it.
17:21I come in and live my best life.
17:22Right?
17:23Maybe I'll do this tomorrow.
17:24I would like to see that actually.
17:26I think it would be dope.
17:27Okay, alright.
17:28Yes.
17:29Well, you look great.
17:30This was awesome.
17:31Our next eye makeup trend was featured on several runways as well, like Jeremy Scott,
17:37Emilio Pucci, and one of my favorites, Sadashi Soji.
17:40And this trend is statement lashes.
17:43It is.
17:44I love a good lash.
17:45A good lash.
17:46So this isn't about like a faux lash.
17:47This is about actually using the lashes that grow out of your hair.
17:50Yes.
17:51So MAC has a really great mascara.
17:53It's called Extreme Lash and it comes in white, yellow, green, purple, blue, red.
17:58And Whitney is rocking a white one.
18:01Yeah.
18:02I use this white lash.
18:03I'm white.
18:04Because I use it on Chloe and Halle for the Refinery 29 opening.
18:07Dropping names over here.
18:08This was dropping names, Chloe and Halle.
18:09I do.
18:10It was so dope.
18:11It was like, what am I going to do that's going to be different but also be something that's
18:15on trend and dope and women are going to want to try.
18:18So how do you apply this?
18:19Does it apply just like a regular mascara?
18:21You apply it just like your normal mascara.
18:23Look down.
18:24Okay.
18:25It's literally that easy?
18:28Literally.
18:29Just using a color.
18:30If you want to use a color that you could go to work with, I would say blue.
18:34Okay.
18:35Yeah.
18:36I'm wearing green right now.
18:37Yes.
18:38I don't know if you guys can see this but I'm wearing green mascara.
18:41I love it.
18:42So I'm totally on trend.
18:45And this white looks amazing.
18:47I love how you did it on her lower lashes too.
18:49I feel like we neglect our lower lashes.
18:50We do.
18:51We need to like play with the lower lashes.
18:53Play it up with them.
18:54Yeah.
18:55This is really pretty.
18:56Don't forget the lower lashes.
18:57Whitney.
18:58You have to go out tonight.
18:59For sure.
19:00Okay.
19:01So and finally the last eye makeup trend.
19:04You absolutely must try this fall.
19:06It's probably the most challenging because it's color blocking.
19:09And let's be honest, that can get a little crazy.
19:12It's a little scary.
19:13I feel like you could look like someone socked you in your eye.
19:16You have to show us how to do it.
19:17Okay.
19:18I'm going to use Danessa Myricks, who's my favorite makeup artist.
19:21I'm going to use her Color 6 eyeshadows.
19:25And it's liquid shadows and it really is like easy to move and apply to your eyes.
19:30And I'm going to use Kazette's brush.
19:33And I'm going to take a darker color.
19:35So this is a dark purple that you're using right now.
19:38Yeah.
19:39Dark smokey purple.
19:40Is there any trick to figure out what colors you actually want to use to achieve this?
19:43It's so funny when I picked these colors I didn't know she was wearing this.
19:46And I'm like this is perfect for her.
19:48But I would say pick the colors that work for your outfit.
19:51If you want to play it up, try white with blue, green, yellows, orange, green.
19:57Like all kinds of colors will work with this.
19:59Okay.
20:00So how do we actually achieve this look without looking crazy?
20:02Okay.
20:03So keep your eyes closed.
20:04We're going to start from the corners of the lids.
20:06And you're using a dark purple.
20:08Is there any tips or tricks on what colors to actually use?
20:13The tips and tricks is just have fun with it.
20:15Because I mean if you're going to do a color block eye you're going to at least have fun with it.
20:19You're not going to overthink it.
20:20So I'm overthinking it right now because I'm going to apply a darker color and work my way to the lighter color.
20:26And the purple is really nice.
20:28Yeah it's pretty.
20:29It's a really great fall color.
20:31So I'm just going to like, and I'm blending as I go because of course blend is your friend.
20:36You know how I love to say that.
20:38Yes.
20:39But it looks literally like your like painting number.
20:42You know like what is the painting in like a coloring book or whatever.
20:47Yeah it's super easy to apply to.
20:49This brush is the P370 from Cosette.
20:53Super easy to apply your eyeshadows with this brush.
20:57So why are women so intimidated by eyeshadow?
21:00I would say Instagram makeup.
21:02Yeah.
21:03It scared people.
21:04It's a little scary because you would see the color block that they would do and it would be like boom boom.
21:08You know but if you want to take it to it in a fashion way like if you want to make it fashionable and wearable.
21:15I mean I say tone it down a little.
21:18Less is more.
21:19And like don't be scared of making a mistake.
21:22Yeah.
21:23Because I think sometimes with you know seeing other people do it.
21:25And it's so perfect.
21:26It's like it's perfect.
21:27If it doesn't come out looking like this then it doesn't feel right.
21:30Yeah.
21:31And I can see with the look that you're doing now it's not this perfect color block thing where you see every color.
21:37It's almost like an ombre.
21:38Yeah.
21:39It's blended.
21:40It feels you know it feels imperfect but looks really good.
21:45Oh so now you're putting fuchsia in like the corner of her eye.
21:48Yeah.
21:49And then I'm just going to blend it into each other so that it just.
21:51I love it.
21:52So basically it looks like a nice rainbow.
21:54This is like you could do this look like a nude lip and you're done.
21:57Perfect.
21:58Like you don't have to do like a full on beat and feel like oh my gosh like I have to do so much.
22:04You can do this one eye and it will give you like an amazing look.
22:08I mean being a perfectionist I'm like perfecting it but yeah this yeah.
22:12So you could see like a little bit of metallic to it.
22:15It's so pretty.
22:16It is so pretty Tiara.
22:17Oh my god.
22:18Yes.
22:19Okay let's take one last look at all of our lovely Essence staffers rocking the fall eye makeup trends.
22:26We have Sarad with the graphic eye.
22:28Whitney is looking amazing in her statement lashes.
22:32And Tiara is pulling off the color block trend.
22:36Remember to visit Essence.com slash beauty for even more beauty tips.
22:41And don't move.
22:42More Essence Now is up next.
22:44I see you.
22:46Standing over there turning your nose up at Colin Kaepernick.
22:49Condemning athletes for taking a knee in protest.
22:52Being all loud and wrong about what this protest is about.
22:56Talking about the disrespect to the flag.
22:59The anthem.
23:00Our troops.
23:01Trump.
23:02And everything but black lives.
23:04This is anti-american.
23:06This whole idea of anti-american is beyond me.
23:09My ancestors literally built this country.
23:12And it's about time America takes a look in the mirror.
23:14Because this idea of justice and freedom for all is deeply flawed.
23:18If you decide to take a knee on the field.
23:21Remember that this is about black lives.
23:23Not Trump.
23:24Not the flag.
23:25Not the national anthem.
23:27Let me over explain it to you.
23:29Systemic racism exists.
23:31And acting like this is a protest about a flag or an anthem.
23:35And not about the institution of racism.
23:38Is pushing the agenda of white supremacy.
23:40Period.
23:41Dear black women.
23:42You are fearfully and wonderfully made.
23:43You are beautiful.
23:44Gorgeous.
23:45The queens of our earth.
23:46You are the gem of all gems.
23:47You are the essence of a true woman.
23:48You can't have a king without his queen.
23:49You hold all the power.
23:50You don't know how beautiful you truly are.
23:54You're watching Essence Now.
23:55And I'm Essence Entertainment Director Corey Murray.
23:56Before we head out.
23:57Let's check back in with our ear to the social streets.
23:58Kayla to see what we're buzzing about.
23:59Okay.
24:00So we asked earlier.
24:01Is locking arms a sufficient way for NFL players to protest police brutality and racism?
24:04Yes.
24:05And it's true.
24:06It's true.
24:07It's true.
24:08It's true.
24:09It's true.
24:10It's true.
24:11It's true.
24:12It's true.
24:13It's true.
24:14It's true.
24:15It's true.
24:16It's true.
24:17It's true.
24:18It's true.
24:19It's true.
24:20It's true.
24:21It's true.
24:22And it's true.
24:23It's true.
24:24So what's right.
24:25It's true.
24:26It is true.
24:28It's true.
24:29That's true.
24:30It's true.
24:31And if you're into solidarity and racism.
24:33You can't tell people how to protest or no.
24:34They should show solidarity by joining hashtag-take-a-knee.
24:36Okay.
24:37So surprisingly mixed.
24:38So a lot of people said no.
24:39They should join solidarity to taking a knee.
24:40Ronale Baldwin said anything less than a full knee is a cop-out.
24:42This says Earv.
24:43NFL players locking arms instead of kneeling seems wishy-washy.
24:45But Trina Spell says, A, yes.
24:46It is enough.
24:48Does it matter how they get the message out as long as they get the message out.
24:51message out how many folks were still standing last year when Colin started kneeling hashtag
24:55hypocrites now they want to tell folks how to protest wow well I while you were doing your
25:00research I was over on my phone and I saw two tweets that spoke to me Jamila King says seeing
25:05all these NFL players kneel in unity is cool what's not cool is Kaepernick has been denied
25:10work for 209 days and counting and then another one that Simone D Sanders retweeted and said from
25:17Trayvon Free attention people of Puerto Rico if you would kindly stop what you're doing and take
25:21a knee the president will finally notice you so it's like all this conversation about but yeah
25:28there's major problems going on in the world in a territory that's a U.S. territory and this is what
25:33you're focused on that's that's my issue I'm with Trina I don't think we should be picking as long
25:37as everyone bands together we get the message out yep all right so earlier we asked you in our viewer
25:43poll is locking arms a sufficient way for NFL players to protest police brutality and racism
25:48is it a for yes you can't tell people how they can protest or b know they should show solidarity
25:54in joining take a knee and here's how you voted 55 percent of you guys say yes you can't tell people
26:03how to protest and I agree with you but 45 percent of you said no showing solidarity by taking a knee
