00:00Hey Essence.com it's your girl Gia Peppers and I'm in Los Angeles today the music master himself
00:11Pharrell is here so stay tuned we've got some great interviews coming up right now hi Pharrell
00:17hi good to see you good to see you too so I just finished watching the film congratulations the
00:22music is incredible when you create these sounds though for things like Despicable Me 3 and all
00:28of this Despicables how do you make sure that the songs are kid-friendly but also adult enjoyable
00:33when you go into the studio you kind of just make them for people and not necessarily think about
00:39um not think about age range yeah just think about people and feeling and it's interesting because kids
00:46like we talk about what like music that's like kid-friendly or appropriate for children but kids
00:53listen to their parents music all the time that's true right so I think it's just a matter of like
00:57once you're done with it then you kind of go back and edit things that you feel like might be a
01:01little bit outside the spectrum but for me I go I chase the feeling first I'll edit later absolutely
01:07absolutely and since it's like Father's Day and you know you have so many amazing beautiful children
01:12now and and we're Essence magazine while you were promoting happier your last project you were always
01:17talking about like the beauty and the importance of women and black women in general so what do you
01:21tell your sons about the importance of black women if you could like what would that speech be like
01:26oh man that's a deep conversation I know right I'm sorry I mean it's just like you gotta understand
01:31we're living in a country right now where like unarmed motorists or even armed motorists who decide
01:37they divulge the fact that like they might be armed you get murdered right you know by the people that
01:43are supposed to be here to protect you right so it's a deep conversation because those unarmed motorists
01:49are the children of black women so you know black women endure a lot women endure a lot period right
01:58right um but there is a different kind of gravity that black folks in America experience the physics are
02:07different in America for us I know people don't want to see it that way but those were white unarmed
02:15motorists it'd be a different conversation and murdered by you know black policemen be a different
02:24conversation so you know it's it's it's that's a deep question and and and and there's the breadth of
02:31the answer is just too much we don't even have the time to go into it but I appreciate what you said
02:35black women and you know everything absolutely I appreciate what you said and then we have to switch
02:41gears I know that was so serious but when you think about the work that you've done even with
02:45I am other and all the amazing things you do you are always putting on for the people who don't
02:49quite like fit in and don't don't quite just fit like mainstream trends so when you look back at
02:56your impact in your work what do you want people to kind of remember from Pharrell what is it what are
03:01you hoping to put that you're putting out into the universe I don't even know you just put it out
03:05yeah I mean I don't I don't I'm not so into talking about me right you know so I don't know
03:11I'm just I'm really honestly grateful for the opportunity to do it if anything just remember
03:17my gratitude yeah and that's it well thank you sir it was so nice to meet you
