00:00Hey world, it's Christina Coleman with Essence.com and this is The Overexplainer.
00:07Oh, I just wanted to pop in and say that we're so sorry that our protest for women's rights,
00:13oh, the one we had to keep this country a democracy, that one last month to remind you
00:18that black lives matter, and that one to denounce xenophobia and embrace Muslims ruined your commute,
00:24or made you miss your flight, or made too much noise. Honestly, truly, we're sorry.
00:31I'm just kidding. In the words of the great Joanne the Scammer, that's canceled. And so are you if you
00:38believe that protests shouldn't disrupt, or if you don't understand them at all. Okay, a little harsh,
00:44so if you don't get it, let me over explain protests to you. Statement or action expressing
00:50disapproval or objection to something. Once it used to gain independence, for example,
00:57to preserve rights, and to let Donald Trump know that we won't stand for his policies.
01:02Does it work? Are we under British rule? Does slavery exist? Can you marry outside of your race?
01:10This is the thing. You can't separate protests and disruption. This nation was built on just that.
01:16It is built on people coming forward to fight for their rights, to put their physical bodies on the
01:22line. And for you to even consider that a protest is inconvenient, or that it doesn't do anything,
01:27is to assume that these 2017 privileges were always in place. That this country evolved without the blood
01:34and the tears and the inconveniences of your ancestors. So the next time a protest prevents you
01:39from driving down the street with no traffic, as a relatively free person living in the East United States,
01:44remember where you would be without them. Then get your ass up, join, and do the work. Until next time.
