ESSENCE Now's “Slayed or Shade" panel weighs in on Nene Leake’s “Girls and Gays” party on the Real Housewives of Atlanta.
Transcript
00:00In the latest episode of The Real Housewives of Atlanta,
00:08Miss Nene Leakes threw an all-white party themed girls and gays.
00:12The usual suspects made an appearance, Sheree, Cynthia, and Kenya,
00:15but a lot of our viewers gave a big side eye to Nene's party theme of girls and gays.
00:20Party attendee, Derek J., he compared the party to throwing a party
00:24where white people are told to, quote, bring their black friend.
00:27And others were really offended by Kenya's comment about Kim being transgender.
00:32Shade Lee Love tweeted,
00:33Kenya brought a gay to the party and then made a transphobic comment all in one night.
00:37I told y'all they don't like LGBTs people.
00:40Panelists, what say you?
00:41Was Nene's party the girls and gays theme party?
00:43Was it a sleigh or was it a shade?
00:45All right, hold up your panels in three, two, one.
00:47Let's see.
00:48Oh, I'll give you some time to think.
00:50There, y'all.
00:51I'll go straight to you.
00:51I was actually one of those people who tweeted that, like, this is highly problematic.
00:54Um, it's just a larger conversation about Nene and her use of, you know, words and just different things from the gay black, you know, black and brown community.
01:05I think she uses it as a show and she puts it on and it's almost like a costume to her.
01:11Um, and I just, it's weird.
01:12It's weird.
01:13It is like bringing a black friend.
01:14It's weird.
01:15It's a whole culture.
01:16It's not just, like, a moment for you.
01:17Yeah, Antonia, did it rub you the wrong way as well?
01:19It rubbed me the wrong way.
01:20Every gay person is not an accessory that you just bring with you to, like, the party to make you look good.
01:25Um, I think her comments are very insensitive.
01:27Nene has said some things that are very problematic in the past.
01:30Kenya has, too.
01:30But I'm also looking at Andy Cohen, who executive produces this show.
01:33Come on.
01:34Like, what are you doing?
01:35How are you allowing this stuff to continue to happen?
01:37Yeah, yeah, yeah.
01:37Um, so if we don't stop it now, it's going to continue to go.
01:40And I don't think that, um, they really care.
01:42They really care.
01:43Tracy?
01:43I feel like Andy Cohen is probably waiting for that confrontation to be held at the reunion.
01:47Yeah, yeah.
01:48Because she's about that point.
01:50You know what I mean?
01:50Word up.
01:51But I think, I don't know, the reason why I was on the fence and kind of just flipping is,
01:56she did, did she have gay men there?
01:58She did.
01:59She did.
01:59I mean, it was girls and gays.
02:01Right.
02:01But was it offensive to you?
02:03Was that title offensive to you to have a party themed that way?
02:06I hate that it's publicized.
02:08Because to me, there's an issue.
02:09If this were to be replicated a thousand times, would it make the world better or worse?
02:13I think maybe worse.
02:15So, I'm going to treat this as an isolated incident.
02:18If all that were invited were happy, then I'm cool with it.
02:21I also know Lance Bass from NSYNC.
02:23He says that sometimes his friends will have a gay-be-bash.
02:28So, what's that?
02:29What's a gay-be-bash?
02:30Oh, no, I'm sorry.
02:31A gay-be-shower.
02:32Okay.
02:33So, instead of a regular baby shower, the woman's, all her gay friends will throw a baby shower.
02:38And I felt like it was along the same line.
02:43Kayla, what are the folks on social media saying?
02:46A lot of comments from our Twitter friends.
02:48Okay.
02:48So, at JLoveAlexis, Nene hosting a girls and gays party is so tacky and is cultural appropriation.
02:54At None of Your Biz, girls and gays, I swear Nene uses the LGBT community like an accessory.
03:00At Gaga for Jolie, once an ignorant fool, always an ignorant fool.
03:04Only enjoying Cynthia this season.
03:05And at Mr. L. Davis, I think a bigger issue than Nene naming her party girls and gays was the fact that Derek J. said he had a problem with it, yet still attended and went along with the theme.
