Supermodel Jasmine Tookes talks about her love for modeling and owning her body.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Jasmine Tooks, and this is my fashion story.
00:05Ever since I was a little girl, I wanted to be a model.
00:08It was, like, my biggest dream.
00:11I would always watch fashion shows growing up,
00:13and do my own fashion show.
00:15I would pause it and act like it was my turn to walk.
00:17And then my mom is also a celebrity stylist,
00:20so growing up I was always on shoots with her,
00:22kind of getting a little behind-the-scenes look
00:24at what that world was really like.
00:26And I still loved it, and I still wanted to do it.
00:28So one day we were at a showroom,
00:30and one of her friends were there, and they're like,
00:33Jasmine has to model.
00:35Let's send her to New York, meet with a couple agencies,
00:37and I ended up meeting with IMG,
00:39who I have now been signed with for about 10 years.
00:42And then I moved to New York when I was 18, and now I'm here.
00:46I think maybe the first fashion show for Victoria's Secret
00:49that aired on TV, that's when I was like,
00:51I need to be there someday.
00:53And I looked up to those girls because they were such strong women,
00:57and they were so empowering and inspiring to me that I wanted,
01:01they were like super women, so I wanted to be one of them.
01:03Regarding my race, my gender, I feel like when I started modeling,
01:07that's when doors really, well, slowly started to open,
01:11and I felt like that I was creating a path for other young girls
01:14that looked up to me, which I thought was so awesome
01:16because growing up I looked up to Tyra Banks,
01:18and I'm like, she can do it, I can do it.
01:20So the fact that I got to walk mini-shows all around the world
01:23was pretty insane.
01:24Even though I may have been the only girl of color on the runway,
01:27it was still like, okay, this is good for young girls to see
01:30that I can do it, and they can do it too.
01:32Like, I remember years ago going to castings,
01:34and I would feel so uncomfortable because I knew I was that one black girl
01:38going into the room, but I owned it, and I'm like, I'm here.
01:42I'm badass, and I'm gonna kill it.
01:44So I would tell every young girl out there to own it.
01:47Own your body type, own your skin color, own your hair,
01:50own, like, any skin imperfections you have
01:53because that's what really shines through.
01:55My dream after Victoria's Secret and next in line would be
01:59to have my own beauty line.
02:01I am such a makeup guru.
02:04You have no idea.
02:05Like, at home I'll just sit on YouTube and watch videos
02:08of these beauty gurus doing tutorials.
02:11I talk to all my makeup artist friends and, like,
02:13try out their makeup.
02:14My makeup kit at home is, like, the size of this room.
02:17It's crazy.
02:18So definitely a makeup line or a beauty line.
02:20That's my next goal.
