Transcript
00:00The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind is a deeply inspiring story of William Kamkwamba and his
00:13experiences in Malawi when he was 13, which was undergoing a very difficult time in the
00:20community that he was in, where there was a flooding and then a drought, a kind of double
00:25whammy. And so the story tells his tale of trying to save his community from this famine.
00:35I was very interested in this story when I was reading it because it really told this,
00:40it was a tale told from the perspective of somebody inside the experience. Obviously
00:44I'd spent a lot of time growing up back and forth in rural communities in Nigeria where
00:49my family's from and so I would spend some time in that sort of dynamic. I would see
00:54some of that and be exposed to the kind of complicated system of life in the village
01:00communities, you know, which were never reflected in films that I had seen, you know, that these
01:06aren't really particularly simplistic places. They may look simple from the outside, you
01:10know, through the untrained eye, but actually the internal dynamics and the complexity and
01:15the cultural complexity and the family complexity of village life is very deep and very rich.
01:20I'd only ever seen the story, for example, of a famine or any kind of those kinds of challenges
01:25broadly in Africa, you know, from the perspective, from an outside perspective, you know, and it made
01:31me think, well, I wonder what that would feel like inside that experience. And if I could take an
01:36audience inside that experience as a point of view to see what would happen, how you would negotiate the end of,
01:43you know, when you realize that you only have a few weeks left of grain and another
01:47year to the next harvest, what's the next move? What do you do next? What do you think
01:51about next? Who do you speak to? What do the parents talk about? What do the children
01:55talk about? You know, what is the nature of schooling within that context? What does it
01:59feel like to be inside of it? And that is all about point of view. Make sure to watch
02:03the boy who harnessed the wind on Netflix and in theaters March 1st.
