00:00Some people don't need your eye contact. It's fine.
00:02Yeah, it's all good. I mean, you do. Let's be here.
00:04See, now that's changed everything.
00:06It's changed. All right.
00:06Hey, guys, it's Danielle Young here on the red carpet for Native Son.
00:09And this movie is real deep, y'all.
00:11So stay with us as we talk to everyone on the red carpet
00:14about what happens when a black man is given a chance.
00:17One of the things that Big really struggles with,
00:19and I feel like you get even more of it in the novel,
00:22is that he really wants to fly.
00:24Like, that's what his dream is.
00:26And he doesn't even feel like he has access to it.
00:29And I think that's a common theme in our community,
00:32not just for black men, but the women as well,
00:34of having these dreams that we just feel like we don't have access to.
00:38We as black men in America have a hope and a dream, right?
00:43It's black people in America.
00:44Hopes and dreams to be the best, to be the greatest,
00:50to have equal opportunity as our counterparts, you know?
00:55But there's a time where you realize,
00:58yo, okay, I am a black man in America.
01:01This is my experience.
01:02This is what it is.
01:04And I feel like this film forced me to realize,
01:06and this film is about,
01:08Bigger represents, he represents the black experience,
01:12you know, almost the fear and anxiety and hope.
01:16And, again, like, the lack thereof.
01:18I think, you know, as a black man myself who's, you know,
01:22absolutely attempting to make something of himself,
01:25I think we are obligated, in a way,
01:28to do everything in our power,
01:30to build ourselves up for ourselves and for our communities equally.
01:36When you're black in America, success is wonderful.
01:41It's hard to come by, but obtainable.
01:45It's not expected.
01:47When you're black in America, success is taken.
01:50You have to take it.
01:52Can't wait on it.
01:53You gotta go take it.
01:54It's hard won.
01:56You know, I think whenever, I think,
01:59whenever you see a sister or a brother
02:01who has achieved something,
02:04know without a doubt that they have worked,
02:07worked and worked for it.
