ESSENCE sat down with Zendaya before the release of her new movie "Spider-Man Far From Home."
Transcript
00:00The characters that I play are definitely different, but I think that's the beauty of being an actor is being able to explore different people and live in their lives and their shoes for a period of time and understand them. My job, I think, as an actress and a storyteller is to tell stories.
00:15Spider-Man basically picks up after the events of Endgame and so clearly there's been like this kind of situation with time and a lot of things are different and I think my character, much like a lot of the characters now in the MCU, are kind of just coming back into a world that they have to re-acclimate and figure out what's going on.
00:43And I think that our characters now have to rely on each other a lot because we've all kind of been through some kind of crazy traumatic experience and like that's not normal to like go disappear and then come back five years later and still be the same age.
00:57So yeah, our characters definitely have a new bond for sure, but overall the character, like the actual people and their personalities are very much the same.
01:06Our version of the character is very like, she's very to herself, you know, but she is very observant and she's always trying to, I think, figure out what's going on, especially when it comes to Peter.
01:15We kind of saw that a little bit in the first movie, but we didn't really get to see it fully or understand where it was coming from and I think in this movie, we not only get to see their kind of romance, but and figure out what that is, especially when you're like 16, 15 years old, you don't really know what that is.
01:33But also we get to kind of, I don't know, see different sides of MJ and her character and break her wall down a little bit and and find out maybe why she was watching Peter.
01:44Maybe it wasn't just for one reason.
01:46One thing that I enjoyed was that basically what we wanted to do with this movie now that Spider-Man is in the MCU is pay tribute to MJ and Mary Jane and that relationship that is like an iconic, obviously comic book relationship.
02:05So pay tribute to that with also doing our own version of what MJ or Mary Jane would look like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
02:13It's been fun because we've been able to just kind of create something new and something different.
02:19And John, our director, had a very clear vision for who he wanted our MJ to be before I even got involved.
02:26And then I just kind of added my my own my own thing and brought it to life.
02:30But it's nice to kind of kind of see a different dynamic between these two these two characters that I think we've known so well in the past.
02:37It's very different from, I think, even Greatest Showman.
02:40Even Greatest Showman, what I was doing on that was like literally having to work out every day just to build the skills to be able to do something very small.
02:47And I'm sure Tom, you know, he's fit and works out willingly, which I can't relate to, but has a you know, has clearly the agility and knows what he's doing when it comes like flipping and doing all that crazy stuff.
03:02So I'm not doing any of that. I'm doing the easy stuff that can be done by someone who doesn't work out all the time.
03:09Hey, I'm Rue. I mean, there was a little bit of of kind of of a shock after I shot the pilot and then kind of having to switch back into Spider-Man mode.
03:23Then once I was done shooting that for like however many months I was there, then come back and switch back into it because it is very different.
03:32I think it was a good balance. You know, I had enough time doing something lighter and like enough time doing something heavier.
03:39So it's it ended up it ended up being nice. It was quite an abrupt switch, but it's part of the job.
03:47My parents have seen it. They're very proud of it. They I saw I showed them pilot as soon as I got it and they loved it.
03:54And then I obviously have tried to show them other episodes, but they don't want to see anything.
04:00They want to watch it live with the people, which I understand. But yeah, no, it's it's they they're they're very much aware.
04:07Yeah.
