See how our panel reacts to the star-studded trailer for Spike Lee's Chi-raq.
Transcript
00:00A trailer for Spike Lee's much anticipated and controversial new film, Chirac, was released
00:07earlier this week. The trailer focuses on gun violence in Chicago and portrays a fictional
00:11movement led by women of color to deprive men of sex if they continue to engage in the
00:15gun violence. The film features a star-studded cast, Samuel L. Jackson, Tiana Paris, Nick
00:20Cannon, Angela Bassett, and Dave Chappelle, just to name a few. The trailer had Twitter
00:24abuzz with mixed reviews, some tweeting that the film is too cheesy, lacks originality
00:29and rawness, and is too Hollywood. Nonetheless, the film is set to be released on December
00:334th. Based on the trailer, what are your thoughts, Slade or Shade? Oh, wait, wait. Oh, we have
00:40a sloshé and two sheds. Okay, Vaughn, why the sloshé? Why the sloshé? I'm going to sloshé
00:45it because it looks like it could possibly be another good Spike Lee joint. Okay. And
00:51you can't really hate on nothing that Nick Cannon is in. I mean, let's be serious, all
00:54right? And I saw Angela Bassett in it. Right, right. Anything she's in kind of makes it
00:58an automatic black classic. So I'm going to give it a slay for that, but I'm going to
01:03shade the marketing tools because it's portraying the idea in its marketing that it's supposed
01:09to be about what's going on in Chicago, which is a very serious matter. So maybe it should
01:14have been a documentary in that aspect. Okay. So I got to, like, shade out the whole marketing
01:19tool. You just wish it was delivered in a different way. Yeah, if it was delivered differently,
01:23I think people wouldn't be so mad at it. Okay. All right, Tony. Absolute shade. We are coming
01:29off of a summer where we saw Straight Outta Compton, that trailer, watching Straight Outta Compton's
01:37trailer and then watching Chirac was like watching Beyonce perform and then watching Little Mama.
01:44Oh, whoa. Major, major shade. That's how it was. That's how it was, y'all.
01:52Sausage. It was, it was, it was, listen, let me tell you something. I love Spike. Malcolm X,
01:59probably the greatest film that I've ever seen. School Days did a great job in breaking down
02:05light skin and dark skin issues, fraternities and sororities, having a message and yet still
02:10be entertaining, do the right thing. So many cult classics. This is just a trailer, but it made no
02:17sense. Some, it made it look like somehow women are responsible for the violence that's going on
02:22in Chicago, which I'm just, I'm just saying, I'm just saying, just, just that, just that. Then the
02:27biggest epic fail was having Nick Cannon come off as a gangster from Chicago. Tony, you have a lot
02:34going on. You have a lot going on, and that's terrible. Wait, let me give you an opinion, Loki. On a more
02:37serious note, I believe what's going on in Chicago is not to be mocked. It's not to be, you know, made
02:43fun of. This is the wrong way to shed light on a situation that's been really just bringing that
02:49city down. And the fact they call it Chirac makes a lot of people upset, especially people from that
02:53city. And it's just, that's unacceptable to me. Okay.
