00:00People don't dance no more, but you can't help but to dance to a Missy record.
00:05You can't help but to get up and move and want to be in a video.
00:09I wanted to be in I Can't Stand the Rain when I saw it.
00:11I wanted to be in soccer too.
00:13I wanted to come from under the water with the bald head, with the spikes.
00:20Hey guys, it's your girl Danielle Young here on the red carpet for the 2019 MTV VMAs.
00:25And this year is so special because our girl Missy Elliott is finally getting the Video Vanguard Award and she deserves all the flowers.
00:32So we're going to talk to everyone on this carpet tonight about Missy's impact with music and hip-hop.
00:37So stay tuned for more.
00:39I think as women we all have contributed in some portion to the furthering of women in this genre and in the industry and the business in general.
00:49But with Missy it's a little bit different because she came in, she was a writer, she was a producer, she would dance,
00:54she would sing, she did so many different things, she had the crazy visuals.
00:58Missy made it so that every stereotype was killed.
01:03Whatever you thought it was, it's the opposite of that.
01:05She gave every female a voice.
01:08She was like, yeah you could be a producer, yeah you could be a writer, yeah you could be a performer, you could be as creative.
01:15So Missy created the 360 thing.
01:17She always going to be relevant, she was always relevant.
01:20As far as her getting her special flowers, it's never too late, you know, at the end of the day.
01:26But as a people, you know, we knew her capability, we knew what she deserved.
01:31And just because this kind of platform didn't recognize to now, doesn't make her more undeserving.
01:38She's still from our era, she's recognized as an R&B artist and a rapper at the end of the day.
01:45And she's talented in both worlds.
01:48It's great that we're able to recognize, you know, the worth and what she's brought to the table.
01:54Changing the game, you know, back, coming out with a, can't stand the rain.
02:00I can't sing, but you know the saying, can't stand the rain.
02:02You can rap though, you can rap.
02:03You can rap.
02:04I can say it like that.
02:05She deserves it because this is the VMAs and I think people know Missy more for her videos.
02:14A lot of people have never heard the music, but love those videos.
02:18And she was the one that really broke the barrier of the outrageous videos.
02:22For Missy to be a trailblazer, for Missy to make men respect her in music and respect her craft, this is a well-deserved award for her.
02:30I love that.
02:31Yes, yes, ditto, ditto.
02:33I got my foot in the door because of Missy.
02:36I remember being on tours.
02:37I remember being late nights in the office.
02:39I remember being late nights at Missy's house.
02:41So to be here, to see this, it's so fitting for her.
02:45And it's such an honor for me to witness it from the other side.
02:48People don't dance no more.
02:50But you can't help but to dance to a Missy record.
02:53Like, you can't help but to get up and move and want to be in a video.
02:57Like, I wanted to be in I Can't Stand the Rain when I saw it.
03:00I wanted to be in Sokka, too.
03:02I wanted to come from under the water with the bald head, with the spikes.
03:05I wanted to be in that.
03:06You know what I mean?
03:07She makes movies when she does videos.
03:09Growing up, I watched her videos a lot and I saw a lot of things that weren't normal, but they were her.
03:13And those were the things that people fell in love with her for.
03:15So now I'm just learning how to embrace myself, be myself, be fearless and let the rest do the talking.
03:20Her impact on music, on the black community, her impact on women.
03:25It has definitely been an empowering career for us to watch.
03:29I mean, I think she is one of the purest and one of the first examples in my lifetime of a strong, sexy black woman in an unconventional way.
03:39You know, she shows power and she shows her own liberty, so I love her.
03:50What on Earth would she be able to bring?
03:51No.
03:52That's right.
03:53No.
03:54We assume.
03:55The question may.
03:57Don't listen to her or she doesn't?
03:58No.
03:59Yes.
04:00That's enough.
04:01Being a girl trying don't get porte for the point, I mean, of course.
04:02It's that she doesn't understand the gun, these are variables.
04:05in maximum words.
04:07The scarcity.
04:08Why did she even call herself?
04:10The mystery.
04:11How does she not look at the description?
04:13Is that something really調ẫnical became if she was a gay person.
04:15Well, she refused.
