During the red carpet at the Emmys, ESSENCE asked nominees and fellow Hollywood heavyweights if they think we're making progress with diversity behind the scenes?
Transcript
00:00Hey guys, it's your girl Danielle Young here on the red carpet for the Emmys, y'all.
00:04The Emmys!
00:05Let me just take it in.
00:08I smell black Hollywood.
00:09I smell black excellence.
00:11And I might smell Viola Davis.
00:13We're going to be talking to everybody on this red carpet about diversity.
00:17Yeah, we are bringing the conversation to the carpet.
00:19So stay tuned to Essence.com for Emmys coverage.
00:28Kamari, are you getting this?
00:29Who gets Taraji's fans?
00:30I gotta look out for my sister's baby.
00:32Do you feel like we're pushing the envelope forward?
00:34We're pushing this diversity, real diversity forward in Hollywood?
00:38I came into this industry understanding and knowing that there's enough room for all of us.
00:43Even though the picture that they painted was that it was only space for one African-American female.
00:50That's not true.
00:51We have so many stories and they're so diverse.
00:53And it's just beautiful to see everybody working and telling those stories now.
00:57Our show, actually, every single episode was directed by a woman.
01:01And some of them were new.
01:02Some of them weren't new.
01:03And everybody was given a chance to collaborate.
01:06You know what's important?
01:07Real diversity is giving people a chance to fail.
01:11That is a word, right?
01:13Yes, because when you're an artist, that is the most important thing, the freedom to fail.
01:18That's how you succeed is through your failures, your mistakes.
01:21And not worry that your failure will prohibit other folks from coming out behind.
01:26Right, not to mention yourself.
01:28But it's like, if I fail, everybody black is going, nobody's going to get a chance.
01:32And that, that is the thing that has changed.
01:35And that is actually nothing short of miraculous.
01:38Our show has a lot of diversity behind the scenes.
01:40We have women behind the camera.
01:43We have women on set.
01:44We, I think they make a very conscious effort to diversify the directors that come to our show.
01:50So there are people who are really making an effort.
01:52I'm happy to be a part of a crew that is.
01:54So I might be a little spoiled in that way.
01:56But in terms of speaking about the whole industry, we got to keep pushing.
02:00You got to keep pushing until we don't feel the need to bring it up anymore.
02:03You know, if you still feel like you need to bring it up, then it's just, it's not enough yet.
02:06I think what's happening now is that we've gotten more people of color into the business.
02:11But we're giving those few people so many jobs that, like, we also need to start creating opportunity for those up-and-coming folks, I think, is the next step.
02:19There still needs to be more amazing black women on these teams.
02:22And it's not just because every other race is bad.
02:24It's just because they just don't think that we're great.
02:27You know what's crazy is that I'm on Queen Sugar.
02:29All we have is female directors.
02:31You know, in Harriet, this guy finished being directed by Casey Lemon.
02:34So, over the last five years, I've been directed probably by 50 women.
02:39I have been so thankful to Ryan Murphy for creating this space, for bringing our issues into visibility, because there's only, he's doing a lot.
02:51There's only so much he can do, though, because Ryan Murphy is not black Hollywood.
02:57And, but yet, he's the one who's helping to bring us into the spotlight.
03:00I'm waiting for our black community to recognize our stories, because our stories are not just about us.
03:07They're about you, too.
03:09They're about our sisters, our mothers, our cousins, and everyone else, and how they're affected.
03:13Not only their missteps, but how they learn to love us.
03:17All right.
03:17Let's do this.
03:18All right.
03:18Thanks for joining us.
03:19All right.
03:20All right.
03:20Let's do this.
03:20Let's do this.
03:22Let's do this.
03:23This is the one of the most important things.
03:23Let's do this.
03:26Look forward to it.
03:27Bye-bye.
03:29Bye-bye.
03:30Bye-bye.
03:33Bye-bye.
03:33And, let's do this again.
03:35Bye-bye.
03:38Bye-bye.
03:39Bye-bye.
03:43Bye-bye.
03:45Bye-bye.
