00:13I have been an MC since 1982. I am currently working on so much as making my head spin,
00:23but in a good way. We have a few singles that are out, Dear John, Ball is Coming. Yeah, the schedule is pretty hectic.
00:34In 2006, MC Lyte made the bold move of stepping away from the music scene to empower young women.
00:42Music created a platform for me to first be known, to have a voice, and then all of the other things that I've always wanted to do
00:51sort of sprouted from that.
00:58I'm in New York City, my hometown. Tonight, I am being honored by the WEAN organization,
01:04which is Women in Entertainment Empowerment Network. This honor is based on my philanthropic work
01:13and my work in the community and speaking to young people and just being involved.
01:19Female empowerment is what I'm all about, and so is MC Lyte, and I'm here to present my good friend with the Legend Award.
01:26Y'all give it up for my girl, MC Lyte.
01:32A Hip Hop Sisters to me in the mission statement is redefining the essence of young girls and young women
01:38through hip hop, empowerment, encouragement, entertainment, education, and it's just that.
01:46Teaching the younger generation that they can make a new them at any point.
01:53To be able at this stage to do the things that I love to do, and also be able to inspire others doing it,
01:59and then helping to further some kids' education, and like all of it is just so positive.
02:06To be able at this stage to be positive.
