Our fashion cam stops NOLA's chicest in their tracks.
Transcript
00:00Hi, I'm Celia Smith, fashion editor at Essence.com, and we're here at the 2014 Essence Festival,
00:09ambushing stylish women in the street. And today, we came upon...
00:14Aaliyah Brazil.
00:15What are you wearing? You look awesome.
00:17Well, I'm a college student, so I'm a habitual thrifter. I'm wearing well-fabber 21 shoes.
00:22I found this at the local strip store here in New Orleans, and urban outfitted accessories.
00:27So awesome. How would you describe your style?
00:30My style is pretty simple. I love color-blocking, for one.
00:32And then I'm also a type of girl who likes to do something simple with a pop of color,
00:37maybe like a nail or maybe a necklace like that I have on now, or something like that.
00:42I had to stop her. I'm feeling the denim on denim on denim. Can you tell us about the look?
00:48Well, I mean, I'm really just in the whole monochrome thing right now, you know,
00:53white on top of white, blue on top of blue. I was like, why not just do denim on denim?
00:57And then I felt like bringing street meet chic, you know?
01:01What are you thinking when you're packing your luggage out here for NOLA?
01:05Like, how do you incorporate denim in this hot weather?
01:08First, it has to be lightweight denim, like colors, because the heat in New Orleans, my goodness,
01:14you just can't do dark. It will just attract the heat. It will just be all that.
01:17I spotted you from a mile away. I don't know if it was the beautiful chocolate skin, the sun hat,
01:24but you're giving me everything.
01:25However I feel that very moment when I wake up is how I determine where I'm going to work for the day.
01:29So how are you feeling in NOLA? Like, what is this Essence Festival giving you?
01:32This is actually very, like, inspirational to me.
01:36And tell us about this hat. It's functional and fashionable, which we all need in this heat.
01:41I found this hat in Chelsea Market in New York City, and it's so funny because I was with my friend Ron Bass,
01:48and I told him I want that hat, but I can't afford it and put it down.
01:53And the next day he's like, hey, I'll open the bag, and it was that hat.
01:57And I love hats. Like, Grace Jones inspires me so much, and she also has a really cool hat collection,
02:03and I started mine. Mine is not as big as hers, but it's a little one.
02:06So whenever I need, I don't wear jewelry, but hats work as an accessory for me.
02:12Your color is giving me so much energy in this, like, almost tropical weather.
02:17Where are you going, and what is your inspiration?
02:21It was inspired by the 60s, and I wanted to do, like, a swiggy theme and have my own twist.
02:27And I love mixing, like, sandals with socks. It's really fun.
02:32Adds texture. So that's what I was going for.
02:35Where did you get this, and what's your personal style, like, on a regular basis
02:40when you're not wearing amazingly bright fluorescent pieces?
02:44I just like to wear things that are extremely unique and that, you know,
02:49doesn't look like anyone else is trying to do. I hate trendy items.
02:53I just like to do whatever I feel is cool, and it always works.
02:58Who makes your dress, the shoes and the cute socks?
03:01The shoes are Prada. They're vintage, and the socks are, like, from, like, a 99-cent store.
03:07And the dress is vintage. I'm a vintage reseller, so I always like to shop my own pieces.
03:13Yeah, yeah.
03:13No.
03:13No.
03:14Oh.
03:14No.
03:14No.
03:14Okay.
03:16Just say that.
03:17No.
03:17No.
03:17No.
03:18No.
03:18No.
03:19No.
