00:00I like to ask all my guests when they knew black was beautiful because you know we're all about
00:07uplifting black women and the black culture at Essence so when did you Lala know black was
00:12beautiful? I think for me I was blessed enough to know that from the beginning you know having a
00:16mom that always told me I was beautiful and made me feel beautiful you know I was I was always
00:23reminded of that from the beginning from day one so I would say I knew that black was beautiful
00:29from the beginning and I thank my mom for that. Yeah so tell us a little bit about that beginning
00:34too like your journey in beauty like what did what did you learn growing up about beauty and
00:40kind of stepping into your own beauty because we know it can kind of get crazy beauty is not just
00:45makeup and hair but it's also a feeling. Well you know I learned about beauty from more of an inside
00:53out type of perspective because growing up I was always a tomboy and I still at the core am really
00:59a tomboy I'm a jeans sweats and sneakers kind of girl and no makeup so I wasn't really into the
01:06outward stuff but I was always learning to love myself and that true beauty comes from within so
01:13when I'm talking to women and young girls nowadays I really like to emphasize that you know you could
01:18put all the makeup and the clothes on in the world but if your inner beauty is not right or if you're not
01:23loving yourself or having the right you know self-esteem then none of that even matters so
01:28for me that's where beauty really starts. Yeah so you weren't that girl that was going to school like
01:35hiding the makeup and like my mom won't let me wear a lip gloss but I'm gonna hide this in my bag and
01:41wear it. Never never never we were not I'm looking at my cousin Dice because we grew up together and that
01:47was not us at all we were tomboys with our sneakers and what we were trying to do was sneak out of
01:52school to go buy like the latest Jordans that came out or something like that but I came into the
01:59cosmetic side of beauty I guess as I started transitioning from like radio to television
02:04and understanding that you know that's an important part of the entire package but again
02:10just to re-emphasize that to me it does all start you know internally. Right because you started to
02:17have to present yourself to the world yeah so you're starting to put makeup on your face and you were
02:22like I gotta figure this out and so did you fall in love with it there because I just marvel at people
02:29who are in the public eye like yourself who literally feel like they have to be beat at all times and just
02:34have their makeup on and have a glam squad and all the folks so what is that like having to be like
02:40on I think that when you do it so much you don't necessarily love it as much at least I don't
02:47because it's something I have to do all the time but I definitely love how it makes me feel you know
02:52I love when you know your beat and your hair is done and your makeup's done and you just walk out with
02:57a different type of confidence because you just feel like oh I really love how I look and I always say
03:03when you look good you feel good and you perform better you're better in room so even if for you
03:08know my women out there is something as simple as like a lip gloss or a mascara that just gives you
03:13that extra something then you know that might be what you need to just feel good about your day.
03:19Yeah you seem like you have like a lot of fun with your beauty too because I'm looking at you right
03:23now and I can't stop staring at your hair if you don't if you can't see she has these like gold
03:28little gold rings all in her hair like that's amazing like tell us about like how much fun you
03:35have with beauty. So yeah you have that fun shout out to my hairstylist Miss Monique who came up with
03:40this today and you want to have fun you don't want to look the same all the time and you want to know
03:45that you can play around with different looks whether it's in your hair or with your makeup and
03:49just create a different vibe like today I have a different vibe because my hair is up as opposed to
03:54maybe yesterday when it was big and curly you know depending your hair being up that just gives
03:59you like a different vibe you're just walking around with something different and I don't like
04:03to look the same I don't like to look in the mirror and just see the same thing but I'm also I have to
04:09get out of kind of with makeup sometimes I play it maybe a little too safe like I get in my comfort
04:15zone and Ashley's there but she'll tell you I'm like she's like you want to do a wing line are you I'm
04:20like no just just keep it natural sometimes I just think people go a little too far and growing
04:26up what my mom instilled in me was less is more she would always say less is more so I'm always like
04:32just keep it natural just keep it natural but I am starting to venture a little bit out of just
04:38keeping it natural is there anything that you do in the beauty space whether it be your makeup or
04:43your hair where you do kind of go crazy I mean you are very creative with your hair but like are your
04:47nails nails is it that's your thing I'm always going crazy have orange ombre nails now but that's
04:55my thing anyone who knows me knows nails is my thing I mean I go far when it comes to nails and
05:02I think that's where I really express like my creativity or what I'm feeling and it's funny
05:07because I had um dollar bill nails one time right so I met with Kirby who's the designer of Pierre
05:15Moss who designed my dress shout out to Kirby Jean Ramon I love him so he designed my dress for the
05:19Met Ball and I don't know if you remember but my dress this year was a money dress and it was based
05:25on me meeting him I'm just talking to him and he's like let me look at your nails you got dollar bills
05:30on your nails he was like let's design a dress based on that concept so you never know when someone's
05:35going to get inspiration from so because of that we designed an entire money dress for um the Met
05:41Ball that's so cool and that's a great transition because I want you to talk a little bit about your
05:46fashion I mean you have a clothing collection we see you on the red carpets we see you on the
05:53do y'all see Lala on the gram with these looks these like outfit of the day moments you're posing the
06:00outfits are insane so tell us about your kind of your design your collection but also your personal
06:07style yeah so the Lala Anthony collection is available in Macy's Lord and Taylor Nordstrom
06:13Saks Fifth Avenue but what I'm most proud of is my collaboration with Ashley Stewart so we're doing
06:18a lot of business with Ashley Stewart I'm really servicing women of all sizes I wanted my clothing line
06:23to look like what you see when you look out at Essence right now you see beautiful women of all shapes
06:28and sizes not everyone is a size zero you know so this clothing line we go up to like a size 34 I
06:36believe that's amazing Stewart and it's just something I'm so proud of and I design the clothes
06:41it's what I like to wear when I go places people will say oh your jeans fit so good what are they
06:45I like this dress so I wanted to put my own you know vibe and inspiration in the collection and the
06:52collection is doing um really really well so thank you to everybody that's been supporting and um all my
06:58curvy girls we just keep dropping new stuff for you guys so definitely make sure you check out um
07:04ashleystewart.com thank you for having the curvy girls you know taken into consideration of course I
07:10always say that about like fashion brands I'm like y'all don't like making money right because if
07:16you're if your clothing only goes up to size 14 that's not a majority of the women in this country so
07:21like why aren't you dressing the the majority of the world yeah I remember I did a deal with this
07:28website and they and the deal was very short-lived they refused to order anything over a size eight
07:33from me they were like there's there's no customer for that I'm like size I barely could fit my fat
07:39ass in a size eight let alone like what so I just ended that but it's just it's mind-boggling that in
07:46this day and age people still think like that yeah you know size eight to them is like we're we're large
07:53like we go large they need to come down to essence festival and we are bigger than size eight I know
07:59exactly so that's why I'm so so happy with the ashley stewart collaboration because they've been so
08:04great at understanding women and and what they want in their curves and their bodies and it's
08:10just been a great collaboration yeah and tell us about your personal style because we see you do
08:16like you know very high glamorous things like what you did at the met and then we see you like in jeans
08:22and a t-shirt like you kind of go all over the place that's how I am it's really based on how I
08:27feel that day sometimes it's a super glam day sometimes it's a sweats and tea or jeans and tea type day
08:34I think again it goes back to the beginning part of our conversation it's all about how you feel on
08:38the inside that's why certain people like if you look at let's say a Rihanna who I love and everyone's
08:44like oh Rihanna could wear anything and she can because she exudes confidence in whatever she's
08:48wearing so somebody else could put that on and look absolutely crazy but with her it's like a moment
08:54every time but that's based on that inner love and that right and that swag that you have inside of
08:59you and no one could give you that so you can pull off anything if you're feeling it and you
09:03feel good about yourself that's true and so you're a mom you're a wife you're on a huge television show
09:10you're running around doing all of this how do you do it like I don't even know how to ask that
09:16question I'm like when do you find the time because I don't even have the time in my life
09:21like and you're way busier than me it's it is really hard to find a balance I think um that's something
09:27I'm trying to work on is having a balance because it's all or nothing for me you know I work so much
09:33that my personal life suffers a lot and then if I am having some personal time I tend to feel
09:38guilty about it because I'm like wait I should I should be working um obviously any moment I have
09:44even during work is is around my son I like to bring him to work with me I travel back to
09:49Vancouver today for uh we're filming 90210 out there oh yeah so my son's gonna meet me there and we're
09:55gonna spend a week in Canada together so I'm able to bring him into the job which is great but I do need
10:00to find a better better balance of like self-care and just taking time for me because I kind of run
10:07myself in the ground sometimes yeah we've seen your son kind of grow up in the spotlight with you and
10:13your husband what does he think of like your job and what you're doing and going on to set and I don't
10:20know just running around and seeing your life yeah I don't think he thinks is as cool as I think it is
10:25really he's so laid back and quiet I mean he doesn't want to take pictures he doesn't want to
10:31be like in the middle of anything he's just a very laid back kid he's a great student and a great
10:37athlete and he's just focusing on that which I love he doesn't this isn't meant for everybody you
10:41know I'm not forcing him to be a part of this but it's interesting because I'm like do you realize
10:46how many kids would go crazy to be on set right now or meet so-and-so right and he's grateful but
10:51it really doesn't faze him that much yeah it's so funny our um entertainment director at Essence
10:58um Corey Murray yeah her daughter what up Corey her daughter Jilly is always at the thing she comes
11:04to the office and I'm like yo Corey Jilly's college essay right is going to be off the hook like she's
11:12met more celebrities than I have she's gone to all the Broadway shows all the concerts she flies with
11:18her to LA to cover shoots I'm like yo it's mind-boggling to know like in just the little
11:24amount of time she's been on earth of like the story she has to tell I know I feel the same way
11:29with Kyan I tell him you know don't take it for granted like this is life experiences that you'll
11:35remember forever maybe you won't understand it now but later on in life when you're telling the
11:39stories you'll look back and go wow I remember that or I was a part of that I was in the room with
11:44that person that legend yeah exactly um so I always remind him of that and um yeah I think
11:50he wants to get into the business at all not at all not at all really Kyan has so many opportunities
11:56to be in movies do this he's just not interested he loves basketball and that's where his focus is
12:02on um and he's a face of Jordan kids oh my god but that's because it's basketball you know right
12:10and he likes that and also he is a face of Sean John because uh Puffy really loves Kyan and I got
12:16him to do that but that was a that was a little bit of a struggle I'm like boy if you don't take
12:21these pictures right now that was a little bit of a struggle outside of that that's it he's so cute
12:26though so I get it so if he can ball and he's that cute and he can model look all the income streams
12:32get it all I'm looking at my five-year-old son like what we doing what's going on what are we doing
12:37because you need to start bringing in some money because mama can't afford college in another like
12:42expensive having a kid is expensive it's mad expensive okay so I want to go back to beauty
12:48a little bit like I always love hearing about like people's beauty regimens like skincare like are you
12:54someone who has like a three-step process you're like I'm I'm washing I'm toning and I'm moisturizing
13:00or are you like the 10-step person I'm probably like the one-step person
13:06and I need to get better my mom my mom believes that Vaseline is the cure for everything Vaseline
13:14is a moment in time everyone uses Vaseline right my mom thinks Vaseline can literally cure every
13:21problem on earth she's like you keep buying all these expensive creams and all this stuff all you
13:26needed some Vaseline but it's so true when it comes to like taking off eye makeup mascara Vaseline
13:31works like a charm one thing I swear by are Neutrogena makeup wipes like I can't go without
13:36those but I have to do a better job at like my skincare routine and like putting makeup on your
13:42face right today I was so tired last night I woke up and Ashley was in the room she's like
13:47you didn't take your makeup off from last night oh no but I was so tired but I'm not advising that
13:53I gotta get better at it and my best friend Kelly Rowland is the master at all of that hey Kelly
13:58he's constantly sending me products and use this and every time we FaceTime she has a mask on and
14:04and a whole beauty light and led light on her face that's I haven't gotten that far yet but
14:09I want to encourage all my people to make sure you do wash your face every night and take all the
14:15makeup off so I use my Neutrogena makeup wipes and then I use like a really good uh cleanser yeah and
14:21then like um there's this Chanel face cream that I really like shout out to Chanel yes um tell me
14:27about how you self-care because wiping off your makeup with a makeup wipe isn't gonna do it for
14:34me sis what else are you doing are you getting massages are you going on girls trips you know
14:40we we see you with your girl squad which I think is so important for your mental health right what
14:45else do you do for your wellness um yeah I definitely try to take you know some time for
14:50me throughout the day especially in the morning just a minute to just one thank God for a new day
14:54and just kind of take a second and just go through what the day is going to look like and to me that is
14:59self-care you know I've heard from so many people that I love and respect you shouldn't just get up and
15:05just start your day you need that moment in the morning one to obviously thank God and two to just kind
15:10to take a breather and prepare for the day I also once a year I always go to an ashram which is like
15:17a spiritual retreat and I've been doing that for a very long time um I just did one where it was raw
15:22vegan for a week and just that's focusing on meditation and yourself and I found that to really
15:28help me because I just go go go go but now I've made it a yearly tradition to go to these spiritual
15:34retreats for at least a week and kind of recharge and reconnect with with myself and do they have
15:40like programming like are you meditating are you 100% it's a lot of therapy it's a lot of meditation
15:45I mean it's tough you're not just laying with your feet getting rubbed but it's internal work to me
15:50that's necessary to kind of set you on your path for the rest of the rest of the year yeah and speaking
15:56of internal work you know we've been talking a lot about the fact that social media is a blessing
16:01and a curse sometimes because you know there's the comparison culture I feel like a lot of young
16:06women feel the need to you know face tune to the initial of their lives not show this or show too
16:12much what would you tell young women today about you know gaining confidence within themselves well
16:19you know I always want to talk about social media it's there's good and bad like you said I mean if
16:24used correctly you can build businesses you can build brands you can build yourself and it could be
16:28amazing thing when used incorrectly you know those pictures are forever and things have a way of coming
16:34back and haunting us so you can be at a job interview and they're pulling up a picture from
16:38essence fest last year like looking at it oh well yeah you were twerking that day and we don't think
16:45that's that's the kind of image we want for our company so you just have to be mindful of it but my
16:49thing is if that's what you're going to do then own it you know if that's who you are then own it but
16:54you just have to be careful because these pictures are forever and they have a way of coming back and
17:00haunting us later absolutely and again social media can be an amazing tool if used correctly
17:05for me with cayenne being 12 years old he's not allowed to have instagram i just feel like at 12
17:11years old there's nothing on the gram that he needs to see so bad that's gonna you know be positive i
17:17think they'll be more negative for him so as a parent that's kind of where i draw my boundaries there
17:21but as an adult again you have to know how to use it correctly and it can be a great amazing tool for
17:27you it can for sure and before you we let you go because you know you have to run around and see
17:32all the folks i know right time goes fast when you're up here i know quick i know but i want you
17:40to talk about anything that's going on okay how can we support you we know you're going to the sixth
17:45and final season of power what else is going on in your life so power fans thank you guys for coming
