Transcript
00:00When the hell did I go wrong with you, boy?
00:03I told you to stay away from that damn place.
00:10Which leads me to, you know, the Jim Crow of it all.
00:15You know, so you said you got folks down home in Texas, right?
00:18Fort Worth.
00:19Our people are from Killeen.
00:22Okay, mm-hm.
00:23Right.
00:24And I mean, we literally live on my grandfather.
00:29Bought the sharecropping land that my, that his wife, my grandmother, used to share crop.
00:35Wow.
00:36And so, you can also hear how I talk sometimes that they're not far from my people in that way.
00:45And Killeen and Riesel specifically are not Waco or Dallas, you know, or Houston or San Antonio, right?
00:54So, for me, it was like, oh, not re, it was remembering, you know, because what happens
01:02as you, as you mature, right?
01:03And as you get to talk as a, as a young black man, as a young black person, but our talks
01:09are different.
01:09They're slightly different.
01:10You know what I'm saying?
01:11Do not, do not daughter, do not son.
01:13You know, I have a sister.
01:15So we have different talks, you know, same themes, you know, different talks.
01:19And I had to, I had to unlearn my talk, you know, because that talk is there to make me
01:28smaller, you know, smaller, you don't feel the repercussions of, that's what your mother
01:34wants you to, your mother wants to protect you, not just physically, but emotionally.
01:38And the talk is there to make you small, you know, and I had to unlearn that, you know,
01:44and remember what it felt like, you know, I was 15, 16, you know, you know, nine watching
01:52it happen to older, you know, to the older gods, you know, watching that happen and the
01:57shame I felt, you know, so I grew up in it, you know, not the Jim Crow South, but I mean,
02:02Texas is a mother trucker, you know what I mean?
02:06Oh yeah. I know. Yeah.
02:08I mean, I was just down there maybe a month ago and I was like, oh yeah, they're not too
02:13far removed. I forgot. Yeah.
02:15You know, it's real, you know, it was a, it was a law, you know, it was an unspoken law,
02:22you know, and like that, uh, that mentality is still amongst those folks. The same way I say,
02:29when we get to talk, right. They get an untalk, you know what I mean? Like, like they get a,
02:34they, that we are both in, that's the issue. We're both in conversation and the conversation
02:41is a debate. You know what I'm saying? Both, both of our humanities cannot really
02:46live at our full, at our fulfillment, you know, with that type of residue.
02:52Yeah. Wow.
