00:00Former U.S. President Bill Clinton and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are set to testify in a congressional investigation into the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
00:11That's according to the former president's deputy chief of staff on Monday.
00:15It comes after the House Oversight Committee recommended last week that the couple be held in contempt for refusing to testify about their relationship with Epstein.
00:23The Clintons offered to cooperate with the panel, but had refused to appear in person, saying the investigation was a partisan exercise aimed at protecting Republican President Donald Trump.
00:34Their agreement to testify could avert a planned vote in the Republican-led House of Representatives to hold the two prominent Democrats in contempt, which could lead to criminal charges.
00:44House Speaker Mike Johnson welcomed the news, asked whether the contempt charges against the Clintons would be dropped.
00:50Johnson said, quote, the lawyers are looking into the details.
00:54The U.S. Justice Department's recent release of millions of internal documents related to Epstein has revealed a late financier and sex offenders' ties to numerous prominent people in politics, finance, academia, and business, both before and after he pled guilty to prostitution charges in 2008.

01:19He has since expressed regret about the relationship and said he knew nothing about Epstein's criminal activity.
