UN to deploy ceasefire monitoring mission to eastern DR Congo

The United Nations has announced that it would shortly send a mission to the city of Uvira in eastern DR Congo in order to closely monitor adherence to the ceasefire in the region.

00:00The United Nations is set to deploy a ceasefire monitoring mission to the city of Uvira in Eastern DRC.
00:09It's a sign of progress in the peace talks between the Congolese government and the M23 rebel movement,
00:16engaged in a brutal conflict in Eastern DRC since last year.
00:21The ceasefire monitoring mission was decided during a meeting between the two warring parties on Monday in Doha,
00:28led by mediator Qatar.
00:31Both sides agreed to measures to ensure permanent ceasefire in the region, according to Qatar's foreign minister.
00:38They also reaffirmed their commitment to a broad peace agreement that was signed last November.
00:44It is not yet clear when exactly the mission is set to arrive in Uvira,
00:49but what is certain is that its presence on the ground is needed.
00:55Over the past days, several drone attacks targeted at an airport in north-eastern Congo.
01:02While it has not yet been confirmed to be an attack launched by the M23,
01:06it is another sign that the tensions in the region are far from over.
