00:00On Monday's episode of Good Morning Britain, Meghan Markle's father, Thomas,
00:03gave his first ever interview where he apologized for staging paparazzi shots,
00:06which backfired, and led to him missing his daughter's wedding.
00:09During the interview, Thomas also revealed how Meghan gradually told her father
00:13over three separate phone calls that she was dating an heir to the British throne.
00:17The Duchess of Sussex's dad also revealed that his daughter
00:24insisted they only refer to Harry as H in order to keep the relationship under wraps.
00:29Thomas also spoke about how Harry asked for his permission to marry Meghan over the phone
00:33and the promise he asked of the prince.
00:35You're a gentleman. Promise me you'll never raise your hand against my daughter,
00:40and of course I give you my permission.
00:42Despite speculation that he would walk his daughter down the aisle at her May 19 wedding,
00:46Thomas decided not to attend after he suffered a heart attack and made headlines for his
00:51decision to have staged paparazzi photos taken of him preparing for the wedding, according to TNZ.
00:55Speaking of the backfiring photos, Meghan's father admitted they were
00:58a mistaken attempt to change his image in the wake of feeling that photos of him buying
01:02a toilet and taking out the rubbish had made him look negative.
01:06I thought this would be a nice way of improving my look. Well obviously that all went to hell.
01:12He also told the British Morning Show that he felt bad about the staged photos, had
01:15apologized for them, and that he had absolutely wanted to walk his daughter down the aisle.
01:20Prince Charles, Harry's father, ended up walking Meghan down the aisle instead.
01:24Thomas told Good Morning Britain that Harry and Meghan were disappointed upon learning that he
01:28wouldn't be able to make the wedding, but were understanding and said the important thing
01:32was that he get better. He ended up watching his daughter's nuptials from a secluded bed
01:36and breakfast where he was recovering after his heart attack away from the media and paparazzi.
01:41I'm watching my daughter being watched by the entire world. Everybody was watching my daughter.
01:47I couldn't have been more proud.
01:48While Thomas and Harry have yet to meet in person, Thomas explained they did touch on politics
01:53during a loose conversation over the phone before the wedding. He said Harry was open to the
01:58experiment of Brexit and told him to give President Donald Trump a chance.
02:02I sort of disagreed with that, said Thomas, but I still like Harry. That was his politics.
02:06I have my politics.
