00:00A shocking election result in Texas that Republicans are hoping isn't a harbinger of
00:05things to come, speaking of those approaching midterms. For the first time since 1992,
00:10a Fort Worth area Senate seat is going blue. Taylor Romet defeated the Trump-backed Republican,
00:16and not just by a little, but by more than 14 points. The special election was in the state's
00:229th district. That's an area President Trump won by 17 points just 15 months ago.
00:26Well, DNC Chair Ken Martin said that Romet's victory is a, quote,
00:31warning sign to Republicans across the country. Now, the election filled a seat left open when
00:36four-term Republican Kelly Hancock became the state's comptroller over the summer.
00:40And that wasn't the only special election in Texas this weekend. Democrat Christian
00:44Menefee prevailed in the historically blue 18th U.S. Congressional District,
00:49filling the seat in Washington left vacant by the death of Democratic Congressman
00:52Sylvester Turner back in March. So that one wasn't exactly a shocker like the other. But as you all
00:58know by now, the Republican majority in the House is teeny tiny. And now it's tinier. Elections like
01:04these are seen by some as a kind of crystal ball ahead of the midterms. And now President Trump is
01:10hoping to do what very few presidents from either party have been able to do throughout history,
01:14keep his party in power on Capitol Hill.
