01:23so
01:25so
01:27so
01:29so
01:33so
01:35so
01:37so
01:45it's over a week into term but the early mornings aren't getting any easier
01:49good morning boys wakey wakey rise and shine and of course i do mean shine
01:55especially when every day starts with spit and polish
01:59they don't sit in the flower beds what's wrong with you are you a pansy
02:07the boys and girls aren't just competing in lessons they're being judged on everything
02:12from the shininess of their shoes to the neatness of their hospital corners
02:16in nightingale dorm the girls are making sure not her hair is out of place
02:21after a shaky first week as head girl vicky buxton is eager that the girls impress matron during her morning dorm inspection
02:28i guess i'd give myself more to do than i probably do
02:32but then if i'm the one that gets in trouble if i don't so
02:36i don't
02:38so
02:40bye bye bids
02:54an anxious vicky awaits matron's verdict
02:57the extra effort pays off top marks for the girls
03:02so
03:09how will the boys do
03:12bad feeling
03:13matron's x-ray eyes can detect messy sheets through blankets
03:17oh no
03:18wrinkles
03:22everything else is over in there that goes as well
03:25if you don't learn how to make your bed properly
03:31you and i are going to fall out aren't we
03:35shame
03:36a big fat zero for the boys
03:38to catch up with the girls they'll need to raise their game
03:43morning assembly
03:46at charles darwin attention to detail is everything
03:50after a week of wearing uniform there's zero tolerance for shoddy appearance
03:57the girls
04:00get your top button done up
04:02true to form
04:03it's a boy who's letting the side down
04:06report to my office
04:07i think you need a lesson in how to get dressed
04:10and how to stay dressed
04:12while the rest of the kids head off to breakfast
04:16slovenly hugh gilroy reports to mr williams who has a unique way of enforcing the school dress code
04:23what we are going to do is that you are going to get changed into your pajamas
04:28if you are satisfactorily dressed in your pajamas
04:31buttons done up
04:32everything neat and tidy
04:33i will send you back to get dressed back into your uniform
04:37and we will keep repeating that process until you get it right
04:41until you get it right
04:42you have two minutes off you go
04:48that'll do the job
04:53uh... i'm sorry gilbert did you knock
04:55oh sorry sir i thought i was to come straight back in
04:58well i'd say you didn't just burst into my office like that
05:01shite
05:02come in
05:05oh dear you were late
05:07this could be a long lesson i think
05:10to make the two minute deadline
05:12gilroy tries cutting corners
05:14putting his uniform on over his pajamas
05:17come in
05:19oh dear blazer buttons not done up gilroy
05:24i'm not even going to bother to inspect the socks and the shoes and everything else
05:28because you just haven't got it right
05:30oh dear how sad never mind
05:35come in
05:42speeding up a little bit
05:44but uh... let's see there were at least two infringements weren't there on the last round
05:48so i think we need to have at least one more round
05:50so i think we need to have at least one more round
05:55come in
05:57that was two minutes and twenty-two seconds
06:02let's check the socks
06:05two pairs of socks
06:06excellent
06:07now we haven't been cheating have we do
06:09no sir
06:10do you think that top button will come undone again
06:13never again sir
06:14right
06:15right
06:16you may go
06:17i think so
06:21it's just uncomfortable to always have it tight around my neck
06:26so i just loosen it and it's also uncomfy when i'm sitting down
06:29it does actually pull down and go around my neck so i just thought i'll loosen it
06:33been there done that
06:35been there done that
06:36the first lesson of the day is biology
06:38today it's anatomy
06:42in the nineteen fifties children were expected to learn by rote the names and positions of
06:47every bone muscle and organ in the human body
06:50by comparison this lot's body of knowledge is skeletal
06:54would you please point to ashley's clavicle
07:02clavicle her clavicle
07:11go and sit down
07:12the clavicle girls is the collar bone
07:17right
07:18i don't know
07:19point to ashley's coccyx
07:21coccyx
07:26come on
07:27point out coccyx
07:30so her coccyx is in the middle of her forehead
07:36oh
07:38oh
07:39so we've now gone from the forehead to the backside
07:41is that right
07:42i presume therefore that you think that she speaks out of her backside as well
07:46is that correct
07:48go and sit down girl
07:50the girls have displayed a woeful ignorance of basic anatomical facts
07:54so will the boys fare any better
07:57all right
07:58relative size and position of the liver
08:05pathetic go and sit down
08:07if that was the relative size and position of your liver
08:11you wouldn't live very long
08:14do you think the liver has a function is it essential in anything
08:18probably not
08:19so you'd be quite happy to lose the whole of your liver then
08:21yeah
08:22i don't think your parents would be very happy for you to lose the whole of your liver
08:26because if you did they'd lose the whole of you
08:28you die boy you die
08:29what is the problem
08:30please sir you can't make us do it
08:33we just keep the cat stomach to like cut up a dead animal
08:36we can't eat it
08:37calm down
08:39i have no option but to deduct marks in the examination if you cannot take part
08:44to be perfectly honest
08:45to be perfectly honest
08:46the knowledge of human anatomy was very very poor
08:48and this is a very simple practical easy way to actually overcome that
08:57that charles darwin grammar the relentless timetable continues with a maths lesson for the boys
09:03right today we are checking that you can do your formal written methods for division
09:10long division would have posed no problem to even the distinctly average O level student
09:16Razak come to the board
09:20you've never done division
09:22what a ridiculous statement to make
09:24you have been in school
09:26secondary school for five years
09:28and you have not done division
09:30i've never been taught how to do it
09:31that's ridiculous sit down
09:36despite having six predicted A and A star grades between them
09:40these GCSE number crunches are lost without their pocket calculators
09:44to be honest i just can't do it
09:47i've been taught
09:48well i haven't been
09:49well i have been taught
09:50but i just don't grasp it
09:52you don't know how to start this question
09:54no
09:55please
09:56sit down
09:57with eight A and A stars
09:59the girls GCSE predictions are even better
10:02surely they can manage long division
10:04well i don't understand
10:05on the first one you did 2-4
10:07take it away
10:08and then 2-4 again
10:09i don't have to know what anybody's doing
10:11that's ridiculous
10:12that at 16 years old you cannot do division
10:15you clearly don't know what's going on and it's not good enough
10:19if these kids show a poor grasp of basic arithmetic
10:22numeracy in the country at large is in a worse state
10:25with almost half of all adults lacking the math skills for even the lowest GCSE pass
10:30did you put the three there
10:32no sit down
10:34no sit down
10:35why are we still putting numbers up there
10:37i put the three in there
10:38no you don't
10:39sit down
10:40i've never done it this way before
10:41you should have done it by this
10:43where have you been you've been sleeping all this time
10:45clearly there's a long way to go if they want to pass their O levels at the end of term
10:50i've never had to do long division on paper
10:53i've never
10:54i can't remember the last time i just did division on paper
10:56i don't see when i am ever going to use long division again
10:59that's what they've got calculators for
11:01they might be struggling academically
11:04but the behaviour in their single sex class have been exemplary
11:07play this is off please
11:08with lessons over for the day
11:10the boys and girls now have their first joint activity
11:14a rehearsal for their end of term performance of gilbert and sullivan's opera the mikado
11:19face this way
11:20so will the distraction of the opposite sex affect their behaviour
11:24would you stop talking please
11:26ha ha
11:28Paul is going to marry a young
11:32young young
11:33your anger is very equal
11:36will be married
11:37i think you should better to come
11:40come come
11:42then carry on
11:44what we've got with the boys is them thinking it's just a great big joke
11:48i will not have you ruining this
11:51i suggest
11:52that the back row of boys
11:55come down here
11:56where we can see them
11:58bring your chairs and come and sit here
12:01do you think i'm bluffing?
12:03i'm not bluffing or bluffing
12:04what did you say?
12:05bluffing?
12:06this eye will not just exclude you from this activity and she'll do prep
12:10the constant giggling the interrupting
12:12pardon
12:13i beg your pardon
12:16would you go outside please
12:18thank you
12:19thank you
12:20thank you
12:21thank you
12:22thank you
12:23Nathan Annie Dugby
12:24is sent out to reflect on his bad behaviour
12:27you knew that i addressed that last speech to you without naming you specifically
12:31because we had high eye contact the whole time i was doing it
12:33but it wasn't just me that's the thing
12:34you were taller than the rest of the group
12:36no no because no i'm not taller than the rest of the group miss
12:38jeff jefford he's as tall as me
12:40well you were the one
12:41no no miss
12:42how dare you speak to me like that
12:44turn around
12:50back inside there's been no improvement in the boys behaviour
12:56boys
12:58if i turn round once more and see you mucking around
13:02then i will be furious
13:04i'm not having every rehearsal like this because it will kill me
13:10good
13:12whoa
13:13which of you said that
13:15whoa
13:16which of you said good
13:18it's the boy that was selected as a principal part
13:23at the moment mr stanley i am this close to saying
13:25why should we use our free time to give you something enjoyable
13:31it's the final straw for miss gibson
13:33mr stanley is left holding the fort
13:35get that smirk off your face peters
13:37because you're the top person on my list
13:39stand up straight
13:41sit down
13:42sit down there
13:44you two

13:59kids a little shit
14:01keep running round this tree
14:04keep running round this tree
14:06go go go go
14:08we are trying to teach you
14:11the music
14:13for gilbert and sullivan's micado
14:16and all you can do
14:18is disrupt
14:19laugh
14:20be pathetic
14:22we've already had
14:23and a duck be sent out
14:25we now have peters running round a tree
14:28ha
14:29stand up
14:31the musical miscreants are handed over to matron who's never short of chores for naughty boys
14:42i thought they were on a nice even keel but they've just tipped over yet once again
14:46um peter's is gardening
14:48ah
14:49peter's is gardening
14:50ah
14:51nathan is doing all the ironing
14:53and razak is cleaning my um copper and my silver
14:58i am so cross
15:01the impish kadir razak's antics would come as no surprise to his family back home
15:06hi my name's kadir razak and i live here in sheffield with my great big family i'm quite a chatty person so i always get told off in class
15:16he never gives anybody else a chance to speak and that's what the teachers every time say to us can you please say to kadir and let the other kids have a chance to speak
15:23my sisters since day one have always nagged me to do my homework because they want me to achieve and they've always wanted me to do well
15:30when we were young and we were studying we didn't get the opportunities what kadir has now and i just want to push him that bit hard to you know grab them opportunities with both hands and do the best for himself
15:43oh
15:45my dad's a taxi driver he drives a big black cab
15:48i'm very proud of kadir because he's good lad you know and i like him very much
15:53a teacher once said to me why are you even working you're only gonna become a taxi driver
15:58that made me really mad and frustrated and it made me more determined that i'm not gonna become a taxi driver because i've given the chance to become something else
16:07wait to say
16:09back to school please dad
16:11not doing a good job then huh
16:15as well as buffing up matron's jugs razak has a formal apology to make
16:19dear miss gibson i'm deeply sorry for my
16:22i think i was meant to say insolent
16:24you've got a swipe on your hair miss
16:26oh dear
16:27i deeply regret saying such a thing
16:29i have also been trying to think what could have made you say such a hurtful thing
16:36i suspect it came out of your mouth before you thought
16:39if that is not the case tell me now
16:42it did just slip out my mouth
16:45before you thought
16:46yes
16:47i was very very very hurt
16:52i can understand that
16:53right
16:56right my name is serge alan i've been dragged out of my bed to come here this afternoon and for the rest of this term to teach you people drill
17:04after a day of disruptive behavior from the boys the final activity of the afternoon comes not a minute too soon
17:11i will work hard for you as long as you work hard for me is that understood
17:16yes sir
17:17right if you look directly
17:18in the 1950s many grammar schools ran a cadet force or ccf
17:22it was designed to instill discipline and enforce uniformity among male pupils
17:27right
17:28stand still
17:29you're ragged guys you're ragged enough for a good three trees let's go come on chop it up let's go back back back back
17:35harder harder harder
17:37once again chief troublemaker scott peters is dragging his heels
17:41card
17:42tuck your shirt in
17:44up
17:47peters doesn't hurry for anyone
17:50he's trying it on
17:51the more time you take young man
17:54the more time i'll enter your break time
17:56do you understand
17:58yes
17:59do you understand
18:02yes
18:03sir
18:04can you take this individual way and put it in front of the headmaster please
18:07get out
18:08go away
18:09this certainly isn't the first time that his teachers have tried to discipline peters
18:13my name's scott peters
18:14that's my mum
18:15and that's where i live
18:16when he left primary school he was right up the top and basically from year eight it just went down
18:22nil
18:23i don't so much hate the school it's just certain teachers that i really didn't get on
18:27scott gets in trouble for answering back if he feels that he's in the right then he won't let it drop
18:34the worst kind of teachers are really snotty one that don't like you and talks down to you and don't listen to you when you're talking
18:41i think the teachers in the 1950s school will be a lot stricter they're going to expect a lot more discipline and a lot more respect than the teachers of today
18:48i think the teachers are going to find it a bit harder than what they have done before trying to show me something
18:54i think scott's definitely going to get a shock
18:57yeah definitely
19:01you didn't want to do this ccf did you peters
19:04i didn't
19:05well you will do this ccf peters it is a part of the school curriculum
19:09now we'll have you back outside and we'll have you doing ccf and if you do not put your heart into it we will arrange some extra ccf for you on your own
19:18is that understood pieces
19:20yes
19:21excellent
19:22peters has something to say
19:24sorry sergeant
19:26no that is not acceptable
19:28yeah
19:29little shit
19:30come here
19:31come here
19:32insolent lazy and disruptive
19:33boys like peters are every teacher's worst nightmare
19:36everyone should be stood in the station
19:38peters
19:39stop where you are
19:40don't look at him
19:41this way
19:42what did i just say to you in that office
19:44just apologize to the sergeant
19:45no that was not an apology
19:46what
19:47peters
19:48i know an apology when i see him and what i saw was insolence not an apology
19:52the words that came out of your mouth may have been an apology
19:55but the sentiment behind it was nowhere near an apology
19:58get back into that line
20:03you take it
20:04you will do ccf it is a part of the school curriculum you will do it
20:08peters behavior may have gone unchecked in the modern world but discipline in the 1950s was unbending and relentless
20:15peters
20:16come here
20:17see the sports pit the trees at the bottom off you go get away then you come back double get away and get going
20:22peters we do not start running these people here will suffer because of you
20:26let's go you're suffering because of him people
20:29we're not going to do nothing all day because of that individual move yourselves
20:35despite the fact his friends are suffering on his behalf peters just doesn't seem to care
20:40peters are you going to improve are you going to impress are you going to change your attitude
20:45obviously not come here
20:48go stand over there underneath there look at that wall get away move your body double double
20:54while the boys minus peters are being toughened up to defend queen and country
20:59the girls are being transformed into young ladies in miss brian's deportment class
21:05you shake hands with somebody you don't pump the hand up and down like that
21:12neither do you offer a hand that is so limp
21:16that it's a horrible thing
21:18a handshake
21:20no that's certainly not a handshake is just a grasp and one shape that is enough
21:28some of the girls are taking this more seriously than others
21:31Emily
21:33Samantha
21:34Samantha that's going to the cinema on weekends
21:36Emily
21:37shut up
21:38yes
21:39so Kayleigh this is Holly
21:41Holly this is Kayleigh
21:43Kayleigh this is Holly
21:45many grammar school girls went on to marry businessmen and the captains of industry
21:51so learning how to be the perfect hostess was Dura Girl
21:57walking around with a book on you Rad
22:00how is that going to help me in life
22:02I come from South London people in South London don't do that
22:04and if I was to do that when I got home I'd probably just get beaten up
22:08back on the parade square only Peters remains
22:12his punishment for refusing to do CCF is a 1950s favourite
22:16stand there gather your thoughts
22:19member of staff will be out there in 30 minutes
22:22stand
22:23yes Sergeant
22:24sorry
22:25yes Sergeant
22:2645 minutes no
22:27look up
22:29look up
22:31he going to be crying
22:34it's completely pointless to do CCF
22:37and I don't want to
22:38and they keep making me do it
22:39so I thought today
22:41I'm not going to
22:42and I didn't
22:43which is a good thing
22:44Peters may think he's won
22:47but his insolent ways don't face the unbending star for Charles Darwin grammar
22:52he's not a stupid boy
22:54you know he can produce work
22:55he is capable of understanding
22:57and he is capable of doing well
22:59whether or not culturally
23:01that fits him
23:03in terms of his peers
23:05is another matter
23:07taking the stance on the CCF was perhaps one attempt at doing that
23:11and it failed
23:12a new day at Charles Darwin grammar
23:15and once again
23:16the boys are paying the price for their bad behaviour
23:22so Matron is now scrutinising their every move
23:25and she's got her nose for trouble
23:27hmm
23:29I like that
23:31you smell quite sweet
23:32thank you Matron
23:33why do you smell sweet
23:34I had a wash last night
23:36but he had a wash last night and he doesn't smell sweet
23:39I'm more of a thorough washer than him
23:42with no deodorant and showers every other day
23:45it's not a task for the faint hearted
23:48ooh
23:49oh Matron that's an exaggeration
23:51you should
23:52no
23:53I have a very very sensitive nose
23:56thank you
23:57the boys dorm scores are improving
24:00perhaps the continual punishments are paying off
24:04but in the goody goody girls quarters
24:06homesickness is driving some into the path of temptation
24:10they've broken into Matron's laundry
24:12where there's a telephone
24:14whoa
24:15um hi
24:16mum and dad everyone
24:17I love you loads
24:18it's Vicky
24:19I'm just like
24:20someone who ought to know better
24:21is head girl Vicky Buxton
24:23I love you loads
24:24please don't call this in my back
24:25because I'll get in so much trouble
24:26but I just thought I'd let you know
24:27I love you back
24:28naughty
24:29but Miss Bryant's on the prowl
24:31you know I love you
24:32and I really miss you
24:33okay
24:34don't bring a girl back ever
24:35don't ever bring a girl back ever
24:36don't ever bring a girl back ever
24:39naughty girls
24:40we'll deal with it all
24:41no but we need to wash them this
24:43because they're very good
24:45a quick excuse seems to save the day
24:47it's not meant to be in the laundry
24:48that's Matron's domain
24:51but the girls soon start to fret
24:53that it's only a matter of time
24:55before the staff realise
24:56what they were really doing in the laundry
24:58she was the one that caught me
25:00she caught me in there
25:01oh yes did you do it as well
25:03no I'm not
25:04yeah well we'll just say
25:05we're trying to find our shirts
25:06and our pants and socks and stuff
25:07yeah
25:08in spite of her position
25:09head girl Vicky's unrepentant
25:12as head girl
25:13it's the same as
25:14as being me
25:15I don't
25:16I'm not gonna act any differently
25:17because I'm head girl
25:18I'm not gonna
25:19tell people to stop it
25:20because that was one of the people that did it
25:21you know
25:22I mean I'm not gonna act any differently
25:23just because I've got a badge on my blazer
25:26for another girl
25:27homesickness
25:28and the restrictions of 1950s life
25:30are proving too much
25:32Rosie Morton has come to see her house mistress
25:35I'm getting really homesick
25:37and
25:38well that's natural
25:40first term
25:41I know but like
25:42it's getting me really down
25:43and the whole routine
25:44and the hygiene
25:45I don't know
25:46I'm just getting really annoyed with that
25:48and I can only like wash my hair once a week
25:50and we're all like getting really smelly
25:52Some of the rules
25:54are getting you down
25:56but do you want to really let them defeat you?
25:59For this whole week and a half and stuff
26:01I've been thinking about going
26:03and it's really annoying
26:05that's all I'm focused on doing
26:07why can't I just enjoy myself here
26:09but I can't
26:10I'm really missing home
26:11I never thought I would
26:13but I'm really missing home
26:15because it's really stupid
26:19you have to
26:21they give you a choice
26:22when you go to the toilet
26:23and say like twice a day
26:24it's not hygienic at all
26:26and I've been wearing the same pants for like
26:28well two days
26:30I've got the same ones I wore yesterday
26:32and it's just really awful
26:33it's not hygienic
26:34and the food's horrible
26:35I don't want Rosie to go
26:41she's been like my best friend since we came
26:46and I'm really going to miss her
26:50and I really don't want her to go
26:52Bouncing?
26:53Come on now
26:54Oh no!
26:55As Rosie leaves Charles Darwin Grammar School
26:58for the 21st century
27:00she leaves behind an emotional group of girls
27:03Oh, sweetie
27:06Obviously Rosie left this morning
27:08which was really upsetting
27:10especially the way it happened
27:11but we wasn't allowed to say goodbye to her
27:12The fact that she's gone
27:14probably paved the way
27:15for like other people to leave
27:17We heard that she actually left at 10.30
27:19and her bed was stripped
27:21and everything
27:22it just felt so haunting
27:23Why are you facing the wrong way, boy?
27:25But the 1950s was not a decade of
27:28namby-pamby child-centred education
27:31lessons must go on
27:32Kind of stalled
27:33Since the beginning of term
27:35Dr Shidlow's chemistry lessons have been explosive
27:38We have hydrogen burning as the calcium is reacting vigorously with the water
27:47And here it is
27:48This is what we call a spontaneous reaction
27:51Popular with the boys
27:53Not so popular with the girls
27:55Today he's going to be demonstrating a series of dramatic chemical reactions
28:01involving a substance called fuming nitric acid
28:04This reaction will generate quite a lot of very, very toxic nitrogen dioxide gas
28:10which I shall move away from briskly
28:12There we are
28:13Experiments using such volatile chemicals are rarely performed today
28:17but they were a standard part of the chemistry O-level
28:20Love potion number 9
28:25The 50s was an age of exploration and invention
28:28And grammar schools were the breeding ground for future scientists
28:32In chemistry pupils were treated as grown-ups
28:35And the exciting practical experiments performed often contained an element of risk
28:40But teachers believed that giving their students this level of responsibility
28:43Was the best way to inspire a lifelong passion for the subject
28:47Hell yeah
28:48I'm going to first of all ignite a piece of cotton
28:53Cotton is cellulose, it's a plant material
28:56And when it burns it does so with a flame which is entirely unspectacular
29:02There it is, it's burning in a manner which is not particularly interesting
29:06The reason why it burns like this is because there is a limited amount of oxygen around
29:11This is cotton or cellulose which has been nitrated
29:14It's had extra oxygen added to it
29:16And it will therefore burn much better
29:18So watch carefully, notice the difference
29:21Whoa!
29:22The reason why this reaction happened like this is because what I'm holding in front of you
29:27Is one of the world's most powerful explosive
29:30Chemistry, we wouldn't do anything like we do at my school
29:34Because here, it's just like safety just doesn't really matter here
29:37You can do whatever you want
29:39And he goes, yeah this is a toxic gas
29:41All the gas came out of it
29:42And then he reached over to get something
29:44And his head was in this big cloud of toxic gas
29:46Get a handful of chemicals, whack it in a bowl
29:48Bit of acid, whack it in a bowl
29:50Watch a bit of flames and then it's mad
29:53In girls' chemistry however, emotions are getting in the way of work
29:57Upset they couldn't say goodbye to Rosie Morton, they're staging a silent protest
30:02Look at the phenomenally violent reaction
30:05Even with just a few drops of fuming nitric
30:08This is copper, one of the least reactive metals
30:12I can see some girls aren't looking this way
30:14You are foolish in the extreme
30:16As usual, head girl Vicky is at the vanguard of the troublemakers
30:20Vicky, can you tell me now, what two experiments have I done today
30:24Yes Vicky, you can't say anything?
30:26Okay, 250 words on the importance of paying attention in class
30:30For not being able to say so
30:32Right, Holly, now you tell me
30:34What two important, okay, you've got 250 words on the importance of paying attention in class as well
30:38Can you tell me what two experiments have I done?
30:40Don't know either, okay, what two experiments have I done?
30:42Don't know either, could you tell me?
30:44You tell me, you tell me
30:48Protests was a complete failure
30:50And it ended up with us all in detention
30:52And writing a 250 word essay on discipline
30:56Nothing ever works, so does it
30:58Teachers always win
31:00Afraid of more punishment to come
31:02Some of the girls decide they'd better fess up to phoning home
31:06This made me feel really upset as well
31:08Because my mum's voice was like, wow
31:10But we've got to go and admit it, Emily
31:12Because that's the only thing we can do
31:14Or we're going to get into serious
31:16All that remains is to convince Vicka's daughter, Vicky Buxton
31:20She's got more to lose than the others
31:22You're forgetting what you're wearing
31:24Yeah, that's all they'll do
31:26That's all they'll do, they'll take it off you
31:28Oh, that's it, that's the only reason why I'm staying
31:30I don't give a crap about this place
31:32I don't care at all
31:34The only reason why I'm staying is because I'm her girl
31:36What's the problem?
31:38Miss Carter, we've come here to, well, we've come to admit to you
31:42That all five of us have tried or attempted
31:46Or some of us actually have made, used the phone
31:50In the laundry room
31:52We've called home
31:53I know she didn't have done it and we feel really awful about it
31:55So we're admitted to it now
31:57Right, I will need to think about what action needs to be taken
31:59So I won't say off the top of my head
32:01I need to think this through
32:03Okay, because I will take into account
32:05That you have confessed your crime
32:07Before we've had to find out about it
32:09But Vicky's terrified
32:11She's going to lose her head girl badge
32:13She said she didn't care
32:15No, it's not pathetic
32:17Oh, it's so pathetic
32:19Obviously head girl is
32:21It's quite an important thing to be a part of
32:23So then if I were to
32:25Have that taken away from me
32:27It's kind of taken away
32:29Some of the things that I'm
32:31Even staying here for
32:33Pick up your mind girl
32:35These girls are confusing
32:37Sit down
32:39You need your music books out straight away
32:41Don't slam your desks
32:43The last academic lesson of the day
32:45Is music with Mr. Stanley
32:47You have an opportunity today
32:49To complete a test
32:51This test will cover
32:53Reading and writing music
32:55The rhythmic table
32:57And finally all that work on Beethoven's Fifth Symphony
33:01A basic knowledge of the great composers
33:05Was standard fare for grammar school pupils
33:07But rebel Peters isn't inspired by classical music
33:11Once again he's trying it on
33:13Yes you can
33:15Sit up straight
33:17I'm only slouching over the desk
33:19You're ill
33:21You need to go see Richard then
33:23Peters
33:25Peters
33:27Sit up straight please
33:29Peters
33:33I've asked you to sit up straight
33:35Just do it
33:36Right
33:37Peters
33:38I'm going to remove the desk from you
33:39Do it then
33:41That's better Peters
33:43I've been leaning all over the desk
33:47What are we going to do with you Peters eh?
33:49If you're not being silly and disrupting
33:51You're completely isolating yourself from the work
33:55By being ill
34:01Next up for the boys it's PT
34:03Peter's favourite lesson
34:05Fortunately for him
34:07He seems to have recovered from his mystery illness
34:09The javelin is a weapon
34:11It was used in wars
34:13It was used to hunt
34:15In our case we use it for competition
34:17And we used to see how strong and fit you are
34:21In the 1950s physical education for boys at least
34:25Harked back to a classical ideal of the proud and fearless warrior athlete
34:29Hell yeah
34:31Competing at the ancient Olympics
34:33As a result sports like discus, shot put and javelin
34:36Were a core part of the PT curriculum
34:40You are throwing like a girl off your wrong foot
34:43It was all part of toughening them up to become real men
34:47Go
34:49Never got to do that
34:51And in this contest Scott Peters is the star athlete
34:54Excellent throw Peters, well done
34:57His impressive performance has attracted the attention of Mr. Stanley
35:01I see you making a bit of a miraculous recovery there Peters
35:04Press the javelin down to the line
35:07Make up and lost time for your illness
35:09Pardon sir
35:10I suggest you have to repeat your music test at some point
35:12Make up
35:13Unless you're suddenly ill for that activity
35:15Will you get my javelin for me please?
35:17Yes sir
35:18Can I have a little bit of your biscuit?
35:21Time
35:22And while the rest of the kids tuck in
35:24Mr. Stanley summons Peters back to his classroom
35:27Ooh again
35:28In the disciplinarian environment of a 1950s grammar school
35:31No one gets off a music test scot-free
35:34I'm not happy with your efforts
35:37No, no, no, no
35:38With your work
35:39No, no, no, no
35:40I want you to do this again
35:41And I want you to write it out much more neatly
35:43Why am I going to do it again?
35:44And I want you to answer some of the questions properly
35:46Why am I going to do it again?
35:47Because I've asked you to Peters
35:48I've already done it
35:49Do it again
35:50I've already done it
35:51Do it again
35:52Because they were not asleep during my music test
35:55Get on with it
35:56Who was asleep?
35:57I wasn't asleep
35:58So you don't even know what's going on
36:01You're a little whiny little bitch
36:03Despite Peters' gobby front
36:05Mr. Stanley has prevailed
36:12And at the end of the afternoon
36:14Something surprising is happening
36:16Peters is taking part in CCF without complaint
36:20It seems he's learnt his lesson
36:39My behaviour's got better I feel personally
36:43Over the weeks since they've gone on
36:45But in certain days I'll have such a bad day
36:48That I'll just completely flip out
36:51And I won't care about anything
36:52And just lose my temper so much
36:54That I'll get in my whole
36:55Like, bucket load of trouble
36:57For stupid things that could have been avoided
36:59If I'd just listened in the first place
37:01Pay attention!
37:02He hasn't been checked in life
37:07Our modern teenagers are almost halfway through their term
37:10At Charles Darwin Grammar
37:11In two weeks time they'll sit 1950s O level exams
37:15Across a range of subjects including English
37:18Right, good morning girls
37:20Sit down
37:22In this morning's lesson the girls will be writing sonnets
37:25Yesterday we were looking at the sonnet form
37:28To remind you for those of you that have forgotten
37:30In the short space of time it is since we learnt this
37:34Iambic signifies that it is an unstressed syllable
37:39Followed by a stressed syllable
37:40Pentameter signifies that there are five feet in a line
37:45In today's creative writing lessons
37:48The emphasis is on self-expression
37:50There's an underlying assumption that every kid has something valuable to say
37:54Back in the 1950s poetry was about rules
37:59And precise use of form, metre and rhyme
38:02Could I compare thee to the stars of night
38:04Their light traversing infinite miles of space
38:07Yes, for I would journey just for the sight
38:10Of that the wondrous beacon of your face
38:13Do you remember that day when I said
38:15That you hurt me and really left a mark
38:17And I explained that I wanted you dead
38:19And Thustlewell suddenly turns dark
38:22I think we're all going to be emotional wrecks by the end of this lesson, aren't we?
38:31Next up is Kayleigh Derman
38:33What theme have you taken for your sonnet, Kayleigh?
38:37Love
38:39Whoa!
38:40Sorry, guys
38:42The more I look, the more I want to be
38:44Yours with a radiant smile on my face
38:47Now, forever and for eternity
38:49Anything to get me out of this place
38:51I will be with you one day, I am sure
38:54And I know that my love for you is pure
38:56Whoa!
38:58When it comes to overtures of love, Kayleigh's an expert
39:00There you go, Poppy Love
39:02Hi, my name's Kayleigh Derman and I'm just boy crazy
39:07I love boys, basically that's all there is to it
39:09I'm not afraid to let everyone know that
39:11Hi Adam, it's Kayleigh
39:12Kayleigh loves boys
39:13Hi Kieran, what are you doing on Thursday?
39:15She's always on the phone to boys
39:16Hi Jackie, free on Friday
39:17She's always meeting up with boys
39:19Hi Liam, it's Kayleigh
39:20She goes to the cinema with boys
39:22What are you doing tomorrow?
39:23Um, boys are high life
39:24Okay, see you then
39:25Bye
39:26Cheers then
39:27Bye
39:28Oi
39:29Every girl needs a boy to draw over
39:30Every girl needs a boy to dream about
39:32I'll be lost without boys
39:33They're good listeners, they're always there for me
39:35I don't think I could live in the world without boys
39:38There is a boy that I'd like to dedicate that to
39:41Head boy
39:43Head boy
39:44Kayleigh, I don't want to know
39:47But I would very much like to maybe we could copy some of them up onto nice big paper to display
39:53Because I think some of them are very, very good indeed
39:56Oh, that's cool
39:57Back in the 50s, girls excelled at English
39:59And were considered to be more comfortable with emotion and self-expression than boys
40:04Sounds true
40:06So, are today's boys any more in touch with their feelings?
40:09Hand in hand with you, I feel such a pride
40:12You to me means such a holy great deal
40:14And so I sit with the knight upon my wrist
40:17Drip, drip, as the blood leaves me like your kiss
40:19Not a no-name heifer
40:21Can't swallow my pride
40:22No, I say blood tastes better
40:23Take my hand and run to the end of time
40:26So come with me and your heart will be mine
40:28Aww
40:30That's good
40:31They get good, the boys
40:33They got going
40:34They were also quite keen to express themselves through poetry
40:41I'm not sure that a 1950s adolescent male would have been quite so comfortable doing that
40:47English, we've been writing sonnets, which was good
40:49And I made Miss Gibson nearly cry with men, which was good fun
40:52That was a really good laugh
40:53I decided to write about love, because most sonnets are about love
40:57And it wasn't really about a love in particular of mine
41:01It wasn't about a person or anything
41:03It was just emotions and feelings that I have
41:05Kaylee's was great, because we all knew that she was talking about Hudson
41:08Who she really, really fancies, which was so funny
41:11And she was like, oh, I have a certain gentleman that I'd like to dedicate this to
41:16That was great, that was so funny
41:18Who's up soon?
41:19Let's see, I forgot names
41:21That's beautiful
41:22Beautiful
41:23I do get on with her really, really well, but I don't
41:24I'm not sure whether anything's gonna actually
41:28Happen
41:35Ooh!
41:40If I was a man, I would actually get down on my knees now and propose
41:44I would
41:45That's beautiful
41:46I do get on with her really, really well, but I don't
41:49I'm not sure whether anything's gonna actually happen
41:51Ooh! Friendzone
41:53The fittest boy in this place, and the one that I love
41:55And I'm just gonna stop now, because I'm making a fool out of myself
41:57myself i've got it bad i really do look at this just look at that that is one day that is sick
42:11for the girls who broke into matron's laundry there's mortification of a different kind
42:16their punishment is to wash the boys undies
42:19let's go
42:37smelly smalls aside there's a further ordeal in store for head girl vicky buxton yesterday
42:43it was brought to my attention that there was an incident involving access to a telephone
42:50by some girls and i would have thought fortunately for me i.e the school that you were there
42:59it was your job to say to them we can't not only did you not stop them i understand that you yourself
43:09use the telephone is that correct yes sir for that breach of trust you of course can no longer
43:16carry on as head girl of this school you have manacled my hands you have left me with no alternative
43:25so if you just put your badge on there please she says she didn't care i'm not top notch you know but
43:31to be chosen out of 15 girls to be a head girl it you know was something that i was really happy to
43:38be when i appointed victoria i knew it wasn't a safe bet but i felt victoria had leadership qualities
43:46and more often than not when you offer a position of responsibility to someone
43:53generally they succeed unfortunately in this particular case uh the role was just too big for
43:59her there was a possibility of me being there on the last day with my parents stood there with me
44:12being head girl you know and doing my speech and things and it's not gonna happen now next time on
44:18that's the mouth oh the boys and girls go head to head a game of cat and mouse with a six inch rule
44:28this side of gilroy jessica where i can see you and peters is in trouble again again
44:35going to stand for insolence to my staff what the bloody deuce
44:41ladies and gentlemen if you made it this far the code word is dorm use that in the comments down
44:48below the head girl no longer head girl she confusing the out of me she said she didn't care
44:53that she leaves and then and that and then girls make up your damn mind nobody can read
44:59what mine read half what the hell these girls are saying let's chat about it ladies and gentlemen
45:04kick ass episode peter's getting in trouble again and again and again honestly he had a little
45:11you know a little temper tantrum obviously wasn't vibing and feeling he didn't really want to do it
45:16anybody can be caught on the bad day uh but he was he's like a mccready uh you know being a little
45:23problem child so i'm surprised they didn't kick his ass out of here honestly a lot of kids in life
45:29go unchecked and if you keep allowing that stuff yeah it just kind of snowballs and stuff so he was
45:37you know he was being out of line you know clapping back talking back some of the other lads as well
45:42too the one that got singled out during the music one uh you know then and the lady then he started
45:49kind of yelling at the lady again um he the tall one i forgot i don't know his name right now but
45:54and then the other kid that was like dropped about the dead shit and he was like yeah go ahead
45:58or some shit he said some shit like that uh the one that had a big ass family there i'm like holy
46:04shit no this kid didn't so that's uh you know not thinking just saying the first shit that pops in your
46:11mind not really thinking about the the consequence there so i'm like golly so to hear his story like
46:19you know somebody teacher was like oh you're just going to be a cab driver anyway and that was your
46:23motivation and then you're not applying it here just doesn't make sense a lot of people
46:28say one thing you know with words actions speak louder so actions will always speak louder than
46:35words you can say every little thing i'll do this i'll do that but if you don't get there
46:39you don't apply yourself you don't do it i mean they're just words so um just like the words of a
46:46song you know with it with shorty went to go tell her a dude that she liked that got friend zoned and
46:52shit she's she's stir crazy boy boy crazy there but you know what at least she appreciates guys and
46:59maybe maybe maybe she just wants the attention of the guys you know what i mean there's you know
47:04people out there they just need that attention they crave that stuff so maybe that's that who knows but
47:10it seemed like she actually gave gave a shit uh she did write the dude something like that which is
47:15sweet you know it's cool i mean you know growing up hey we have you know girls would give me letters
47:22you know valentines and write letters and stuff not so much now as far as like people don't really
47:27write a lot um you know everybody's text messaging or yeah yada yada etc etc but yeah there's a nice
47:35charm to somebody taking the time to write letters i've had that multiple times and the feeling that you
47:42feel you know they'll leave like a little uh kiss thing on there you know with their lipstick and
47:47shit you know they'll put the smooching shit there they'll write how much they miss you blah blah blah
47:52blah that shit makes you feel good ladies and gentlemen something that you know feel like it's a lost art
47:57um you know something that's lost here but yeah the i think that the boys were being more i i figured
48:05that the boys would be more problematic so they didn't disappoint there when they had the you know
48:10the choir action happening here and um you know both groups got together um because of the boys
48:18antics then the girls will start giggling and start laughing and stuff but you know you they use that
48:24moment to try to i don't know you could say and try to impress the ladies or they just wasn't
48:30really giving a shit i mean you know flip a coin whatever it leads to it's probably one or two of the
48:35other ones but yeah it was definitely surprising me the javelin throw stuff was really cool i would
48:40have been really into the chemistry stuff i had moments doing experiments and stuff i can't remember
48:46to that length like that but i would have really enjoyed to do some of these things the physical
48:52aspects the physical education shit you know i i think sometimes too with some of these kids maybe this
48:58is what peters as well they needed some outlet to let out their frustrations in a positive way
49:05that's why he probably was chiming in a little bit more with the um you know the javelin stuff and
49:10getting in line you know he had to be a little bit challenged yes he was whining a little bit you know
49:16moping around crying and shit in my eyes and stuff but you know he is a kid so we do stupid
49:22shit um you know it is what it is but with the head girl she was confusing herself i didn't say it
49:30already she was definitely confusing me because she was like i really don't care when the other
49:34girl was like i don't care about that now she's disappointed that she was gonna now she's not
49:39gonna be head girl but i mean what would you expecting what were you expecting to happen in that
49:45scenario i mean like you're doing bad shit you're calling on the phone she was one of the few that
49:51was able to make that call so the girls shocked me in their own way proud of them for fessing up you
49:57know they felt guilty in the moment there but you know they at that moment in time they really didn't
50:02give a shit that's why they made that call so i think that it was a great great punishment i'm
50:07sorry ladies and gentlemen i was laughing my ass off i was loving them cleaning the drawers they
50:13should be doing more of that shit so that they never do that stuff again you know the sweatier the
50:18dirtier and who knows what else is on those drawers not even going to try to well might be stuck in
50:23people's head right now oh god but love the show the girls doing the um silent protest i didn't really
50:33understand it because it wasn't the teachers or the fault and why the girl left it was the girl's fault
50:41she wanted to leave she was homesick and shit so like you doing a silent protest doesn't really do
50:46anything in my mind because the teachers had nothing to do with it the girl wanted to leave they
50:51kind of like obliged and deuces to the girl she went back home so i mean unfortunately you know once
50:58you got to leave they're not really going to give you much time to say goodbye so get a little glimpse
51:02of uh lads army here a little glimpses of ladette to lady especially with the the book and teaching
51:09them about their posture and stuff uh you know some with the program some not with the program it is
51:14you know it is what it is you know their their youth is there and you know hopefully some you
51:20know learn some of those things i i honestly think a lot of those things that they're learning right
51:24there is useful stuff uh you know even the cleaning man you know i know it sounds stupid guys girls
51:30should know how to be cleaning taking care of yourself presenting yourself well um you know what
51:35when i do reactions i'm just using a t-shirt and shorts and stuff like that i don't really care
51:39or anything like that i'm not here to impress and stuff but when i go out i make sure i look nice
51:44i'm not going to be looking all sloppy looking uh because you know um it matters and stuff so if
51:50again like if i had uniform i'm not going to be looking all disgusting looking uh i wouldn't want
51:55to wear you know you have your white shirt and it's like brown or you know black or whatever like
52:00that that you know that's that's disgusting it's just i can only imagine the the sense coming off
52:05some of these people uh you know you know thank thankfully we we don't have that technology here
52:11where you do a reaction and you could smell some of the stuff that's popping up not like these uh 4d
52:16shits uh because i definitely don't want to smell what those girls are probably smelling after they
52:22were cleaning them draw so did you guys enjoy the episode let me know in the comments down below it's
52:26another show always look forward to seeing it never ceases to you know make me laugh i'm always
52:32laughing i'm having a great time shaking my head but at the same time i remember me being a little
52:37bit um you know hard for teachers so i can relate as i grown up you know i grown up yeah you know you
52:45you tone it down a notch but uh you know you see yourselves in some of the kids as far as the way
52:50they're acting and the the sonnet stuff i agree like for me personally uh for anybody new here but in school
53:00when i got to do free writing or poetry mix more on the writing and just letting things out on a
53:07paper i think it was some of the best moments it's classes that i'll never forget because it allowed
53:13us to just express ourselves and we had to perform these things like um for example i think it was
53:1911th grade there was a whole bunch of different classes of 11th graders so like you know different
53:25sections so let's just say i'll just free ball it right 11a 11b 11c 11d 11e so there's you know you
53:32have 20 or 30 kids in the class but there's a whole big group of 11th graders for example and
53:39the teacher our teacher andy made us through the free write and then we had to perform it in front of
53:46uh the principal the the whole 11th grade so you know i was doing like kind of rhyming and
53:53shit like that and i was able to curse principal didn't get mad at me i was like oh shit let's go
53:59and so it was really cool it's something i cherish i i'll never forget i do say i do need to do that
54:07more because it was some of the best experiences um you know what is some of your fondest memories of
54:12class anything besides gym and eating uh let me know in the comments down below thanks so much for
54:18kicking it enough of my yap and don't forget to subscribe if you enjoy the content thank you all for
