00:41with me and hopefully you have a laugh alongside me let's get it snacks not included let's freaking go
00:48that'll teach them
00:57it's day four charles darwin grammar and time for matron's morning inspection
01:23oh dear it's not good is it with over 20 years experience as a boarding school matron
01:31she's a stickler for an impeccably made bed
01:34a sloppy appearance may be acceptable at their modern schools but not here
01:42i can't reach up there matron always has a pair of braces on hand in case of a drop in standards
01:49in the boys dorm
01:51what's this
01:52what's this
01:53what's this
01:55oh
01:57absolutely perfect now put your blazer on you'll see how nice you look
02:03matron might be satisfied but housemaster mr williams is on the warpath
02:14i'm going to make you a once only offer i am willing to offer you all a contraband amnesty
02:27if you fail to offer up contraband now when the amnesty is offered and i subsequently find
02:35any contraband the punishment will be severe the boys all keep still apart from one james ingram
02:51handing over his hidden stash might sweeten up the teachers oh boy but it doesn't seem to impress his dorm mates
03:03every day at charles darwin school begins with a traditional morning assembly
03:09today staff are going to be consulting on the position of head boy and head girl
03:15those positions carry with them responsibility and privileges we are looking for leaders
03:23a leader for the girls and a leader for the boys
03:27he's already sleeping
03:28since the start of term the teachers have been assessing the pupils for old-fashioned qualities of integrity and authority
03:35james ingram is convinced he's a front-runner for head boy
03:39the headmaster keeps going on about how i'd be such a good head boy kind of thing
03:43um and how he's still making up his mind
03:47i think head boy would probably be ingram
03:49because he's a real suck up to all teachers he really
03:53he'll do anything that it takes
03:55we reckon ingram's probably gonna get it
03:57yeah even though you don't want him to yeah
03:59but he's still gonna get it he just sucks up
04:01he just he's just sucking up way too much
04:03he tries too hard
04:07it's time for lessons
04:11this morning the pupils are facing a double period of physics
04:15charles darwin grammar is fitted out with a fully functioning 1950s science lab
04:21where the emphasis will be on practical learning through dramatic experiments
04:25it's a far cry from modern gcse combined science
04:32in the 1950s science was taught as three separate subjects chemistry physics and biology
04:40pupils were expected to know the basics no matter how dull
04:44in physics for instance understanding how light is refracted through a lens was considered essential
04:50oh the fact that there used to be an eye
04:53there's a lot of everyone got it
04:57i just don't i really really don't like that kind of thing
05:01it just i just think an animal's eye should be on an animal
05:05i don't like it when it's all chopped out
05:07for jenny ritzman the thought of cutting up animals is a little too close to home
05:14i live here in nottingham with my mum dad and brother and two little boys
05:19whoa my gimmicks are called toffee and galaxy and they're both five
05:24boys
05:25she loves the guinea pigs
05:27she acts like they're babies
05:29yeah
05:31oh look at that
05:33i'm the mum and so my mum is her grandma and my dad's her grandad and my brother's her uncle
05:38yet we have this whole family thing
05:41if i'm not there to look after them then my parents will look after them but they haven't quite got the knack like i have
05:46you know they don't know our routine
05:48she doesn't think we're going to look after them as well as she does that's her biggest concern
05:52quite sad really isn't it
05:55thank you
05:56the reason why i'm a vegetarian is just i don't
05:59it's like someone give you a dead body and say here eat this would you really want to eat that
06:04she really does feel that animals have their own personalities and i mean jenny would say you're eating someone
06:11would you really want to eat an animal it's dead
06:14jenny's for coffee
06:16jenny's predicted a b grade in gcse science
06:19remember every time in life you're faced with a challenge if you react this way you will achieve nothing
06:25you will achieve nothing if this is the way you react to every challenge in your life
06:29go back to your places
06:31if the girls continue like this the boys will easily outstrip them in the upcoming science o levels
06:37let's go boys
06:38pay attention
06:39it's lunchtime at charles darwin grammar and for these kids used to turkey twizzlers and microwave pizza every meal is a challenge
06:50much more nutritious than modern school dinners on the menu meat stew and boiled vegetables
06:56oh yeah
06:58kidney
06:59it looks like it's just come out of the science experiment
07:04are you an idiot do you think that's going to help someone eat their food by saying it looks like brad
07:11it is
07:13yummy
07:18is there anybody who would like seconds of braised lamb's hearts
07:28everybody
07:32the 1950s I would have happily lived in it food wise yeah it's really disgusting whilst the boys
07:42see the funny side the girls get on a right old state Ashley waters is a shadow of her
07:53former self my teachers would describe me as loud I say what I think and I don't always follow the
08:01rules I think she can get easily bored and she becomes quite disruptive at school yeah I set
08:06off five fire alarms and I caused a fire as well oh we threw eggs at all the teachers as well that's
08:14bad in it at her prom as though she wasn't the best behaved kid there I did a strip and I dirty
08:20danced with my headmaster while he was trying to give a speech now I'm not allowed back in the
08:24school premises did you not know you know I definitely miss my makeup I don't know how I'm
08:29gonna cope about that she was probably struck about the way that they could have make her do
08:33her hair hair straighteners I couldn't live without hair straighteners she won't like any of that it'd be
08:39pretty to see her going through it Ashley and the other girls have a whole afternoon of sport to look
08:46forward to but they seem to be more interested in doing their hair many modern girls are too image
08:53conscious to break into a sweat let alone spend two hours on the sports field I don't usually run I
09:06prefer to either walk or be driven because I don't get the point in running when you just get absolutely
09:10exhausted and you look like a complete idiot so I hate that sort of thing I haven't done it five
09:15years I actually don't own a PE kit for my school I just haven't done it I don't do it and I don't
09:20have to I just sit there and read instead I can't handle it and that may mean I'm weak and that may
09:26mean I'm not a strong person but I really don't care at the moment because I want to go home for Ashley
09:32and her friend Holly the prospect of PE is the final straw now what's wrong with you I'm just
09:38I've hated everything I hate the lessons I hate the constant strictness I thought it was going to be
09:43like this but I didn't realize to what extent how harsh everyone was going to be once you're there you
09:48don't realize actually how bad it is and it is well bad look seriously bad and I can't handle it I
09:53think that if I stay for another week I'm going to want to go then so I might have just gone now
09:58was the point of putting myself through it for more time well I can almost promise you if you
10:02stayed for another week you wouldn't want to go I've been doing this job for a long time and I can
10:08tell you now that in a week's time you will say to me I am so glad that I didn't go and just explain
10:14to me in finer detail what has gone wrong I've hardly eaten anything like I can't actually stomach the food
10:23so when I do PE I'm just getting dizzy I'm weak and I physically feel I'm just drained already and I
10:30think if I stay here for a month I would just become so insecure because already I'm so conscious of how
10:37I look and like everything and I just don't think it's worth putting myself through that and you know I
10:44was going to talk to people about the food problem but then I knew I'd probably be forced to eat it and I
10:49can't because you've seen my heave when I look at the food and I can't stay here when I'm not eating
10:54it's just it's not it's not good for me can I just say that eating isn't the word eating it's got a G on
11:01the end now you have to listen to me when I'm talking to you if you go you will regret it hugely and
11:11people will say if they knew you were going through this and you were giving up well how come they give up
11:17on that what happens when they go out into the workplace if it doesn't go right for the first
11:22week are they going to chuck it in I don't think so this is real character building stuff and if you
11:29get through this you can face anything on this earth if you don't you're just a waste of space
11:36because it's four weeks to the end of term and it's the four weeks I'll make such a huge difference
11:42to your life it really will and I think you would be absolute fools to let this opportunity go do you
11:51understand what I'm saying now I think you ought to go back to games now a good dose of netball
11:59should sort out these reluctant in modern schools rarely have more than two hours of PE a week in
12:21the 1950s compulsory competitive sport was seen as character building 21st century schools the emphasis
12:30is on cooperation not competition but a Charles Darwin the school mottos only the fittest survive
12:37these weaklings wouldn't have lasted five minutes up against the lads of the 50s
12:48grammar schools in the 50s prided themselves on their sporting achievements with unfit pupils treated
12:56as failures school children would spend up to 17 hours a week working off those spam fritters the
13:03same amount of time today's kids spend watching TV chubby kids were rare in the 50s but today one in
13:11five British teenagers is obese for Molly coddled 21st century teenagers being made to do a 60 yard run
13:21just isn't fair just the fat kids who object Amy jumper new decides to protest all the way around the field
13:36and can you do scouts please 50 runs and 50 walks do it now go actually one miss what are you do as
13:42much as you can come on get on with it I've got stomach cramps well then you do as much as you can
13:46quickly hurry up understand I can't run I understand perfectly well will you please start moving I
13:51don't mind if you move your hands on your feet on your hands and feet or backwards sideways jumping like a kangaroo
14:00move you move girl stay crying man nicknamed limpy by her classmates Amy has a particular hatred of
14:08physical exertion just not running bloody mental they're making this doing it five days of the
14:14week I'm so exhausted I just feel sick because I've never done that much exercise in my whole life when
14:22I'm at home I just sit about lounge around talking the phone or occasionally I go out but it's not
14:27really far or I take a bus or something but this is just ridiculous I'm just I'm so I'm mentally exhausted
14:35I'm physically exhausted at the same time you just don't ever get time alone it's just oh I think it's
14:41really getting to me I'm just gonna walk back and sit down but I'm not running looks like 1950s grit is not
14:49limpy's forte I don't think I've done games for the better half of the year I've just written
14:56myself sick notes because I just I can't I just can't be bothered I'm definitely not an organized
15:04person I always forget when to turn up for things I turn up for the wrong day or the wrong time I'm
15:09actually late for everything all strict teachers I'm not very good actually and I usually just end up
15:16getting sent out the room malingerer Amy's in for it now she's been sent to see matron
15:25but while the girls lack competitive spirit the boys are getting a taste for it we don't do a lot
15:32of running so I'm quite yesterday sprinting running aspect of idea did you have to do a lot of running
15:36but that's that's really really mental compared to what we usually do
15:42she's just really enjoyable she's really fun and she wanted to win so much she didn't want to go back
15:48and lose her I never do this much exercise especially at home in a week let alone a day
15:53so it's been quite a challenge for me and it really hurts
15:56Amy's punishment for shirking in PE is to scrub the boys dirty shirts
16:03yes give them the underwears too give her that too
16:06number one
16:07you should get the undies too
16:11I let on easy I want to give her the underwear
16:20I think in the sense of doing punishments like this actually make you learn the lesson
16:25because in normal schools you just do punishments that just really
16:28they only last about ten or five minutes and more often than not it's just usually teachers
16:34just telling you off and just asking you not to do it again but here it's I think if you
16:39do punishments you actually do learn the lesson and you just don't do it again really
16:44learn how to clean her shirt too
16:47at charles darwin grammar school the pupils follow a rigid timetable pages 99 202 even after lessons they
17:03have prep an hour and 15 minutes of supervised homework it's a frustrating experience for kids
17:10used to planning their own evenings after prep they're treated to half an hour of free time
17:21it's the only chance the boys and girls get to spend time together under the beady eye of miss Gibson of course
17:27but the kids are reverting to type and miss Gibson's getting increasingly frustrated with their slack 21st century attitude
17:48modern teenagers are only good at making a mess not cleaning one up
17:55why are you playing boy
17:57what's that under that chair it's a book this room does not look dumb to me
18:05I just took that off you about a minute ago
18:12is there something funny
18:14I'm not laughing
18:15sorry
18:16excuse me
18:18try that one again
18:20I'm not laughing at this
18:26it's just me playing again with my own
18:29is there something you want to say
18:32not really not
18:34how dare you speak to a member of staff like that
18:37not really no
18:43get outside
18:44I'm really hammered a loss
18:47as to what to do with you
18:52you spoil it for everybody
18:54a few selfish people
18:56who are not prepared
18:57to pitch in
18:59and help
19:00spoil it for everybody
19:03get outside
19:04line up
19:05silently
19:06caps on
19:07after only four days at the school
19:09the relentless regime is starting to get to the kids
19:12they're fed up with being treated like children who should be seen but not heard
19:16I just feel like my companions are being suppressed
19:19and that you're going to be broken down into this yes sir like mechanical robot
19:22I think yes sir no sir very good sir
19:25you can't say nothing off you can't say yeah okay it's just
19:28it's just set you're being turned into a machine that's just polite rigid and boring
19:34the one thing about this place is that it completely
19:37quashes your individuality the way the way you can be a person yourself
19:42you just can't be in here because you're all got to be exactly the same and perfect
19:47it's like the cloning everyone to be the same and I don't think that's very good
19:53I think everyone should be like individuals how they are
19:56I can't actually show who I really am here because we're all being the same which just isn't fun
20:02we're all forced to be this attempted to force to be this samey intelligent little swat who just does everything the teacher wants
20:14I'm not like that I'm an individual
20:17aww
20:18these modern kids may prize their individuality but they seem to be enjoying communal dorm life
20:24they've even written their own version of the school song
20:38into your beds please
20:41in case you have forgotten
20:44my office
20:46and my quarters where I sleep are directly next to yours
20:51I hear everything that goes on in this dorm
20:56there'll be no reading tonight
21:00and when lights go out I want absolute silence
21:05singing after lights out is strictly forbidden
21:22line up
21:24mr. Williams thinks 20 minutes of fresh air might teach them a lesson
21:30I'm going to be head boy James Ingram decides to assert his individuality
21:39Ingram
21:41are you ready to go to bed with no talk
21:44I'm sure everyone else would like to stand here but I'd rather go for a job sir
21:48now not in the morning sir
21:50he's broken the habit of a lifetime and back chatted a teacher
21:54you have earned your first attention from me for that insolent remark
22:01I don't know if you thought you were trying to be funny
22:05yes sir
22:07I think you can tell I am not amused
22:10I am
22:13fucking James
22:15I am
22:22before
22:23shape
22:24I am
22:25after last night's misbehavior the boys are still half asleep
22:27come on up
22:29and in the cold light of day James Ingram's lost his bottle
22:30I'm thinking of asking the Head Teacher to allow me to go home
22:32because I'm really not happy here
22:35I'm just not enjoying it
22:36but he's not the only one in trouble
22:39Last night, at about 20 past 11, I was just dropping off to sleep and I heard a running
22:47footsteps. Two girls got out of their French windows in the dormitory end and had run across
22:54the parapet, past my bedroom windows, to get to the boys' dormitory. Two girls went out of these
23:01windows. They were seen running along the parapet and running back again. I'm referring
23:07that to the headmaster. Whoever was responsible, just hold yourselves in readiness.
23:14I went out first and I went underneath the matron's window, past Mr Stanley's window,
23:21and then I came to the boys' dormitory and I was like tapping on, tapping, and they told me to go
23:26away because Mr Stanley was in the room. And we like tried three times and we got caught, like on the
23:31third time by one of the teachers. But they didn't actually see us because it was too dark.
23:38They knew it was two girls. And now Matron's going around saying
23:42that if they don't, if the two people don't admit to it, then the whole dorm is going to be punished.
23:47But to be honest, I don't exactly want to be expelled. So I'm really, I'm actually a bit scared
23:52about that. Although the culprits weren't identified, persistent troublemaker and Vicar's
23:58daughter, Vicki Buxton, is a prime suspect. Victoria, I want you to tell me the truth now.
24:06Please tell me that you had nothing to do with running along the veranda last night.
24:11I had nothing to do with that matron. Nothing at all? Nothing at all.
24:14Right. Can I suggest to you, this evening, that you get the girls to own up, whoever it was?
24:24We're trying as hard as we can, Matron. We're trying.
24:28Because it's going to be very hard for the rest of them. Okay.
24:32And it's unfair to make people be punished for things they haven't done. All right?
24:37Okay. Thank you. Thank you.
24:39Meanwhile, Ingram has been sent to see the head after last night's trouble.
24:45I understand, Ingram, from what the housemaster tells me, you wish to challenge the authority
24:52of the running of my school. Explain yourself to me, Ingram!
24:57Sir, I had an irrational moment. I would like to leave the school. That's why I have the irrational moment.
25:03You had an irrational moment. That is your excuse.
25:06Ingram, if you continue to behave in such a manner, it will be not your choice to leave the school.
25:13It will be my choice. So do not pre-empt me.
25:18Don't push yourself.
25:19Could you tell me exactly what you said to the housemaster?
25:23That I would like to go for a jog when everyone else wouldn't, and I'd like to go for a nighttime jog.
25:31Do you think that's clever?
25:32No, sir. I was being honest.
25:34Oh, do you want to play a game of cleverness, Ingram? Because if we do, Ingram, I shall beat you hands down.
25:38Kev!
25:41My opinion of you couldn't have been higher prior to this incident.
25:48Couldn't have been higher. Stop feeling sorry for yourself.
25:52You've stepped out of line, and now the strong thing to do is to not wallow in self-pity Ingram, but to go to the housemaster at the earliest convenience and apologise.
26:05That's the least you can do.
26:06Yes, sir.
26:07Dismiss.
26:08Yes, sir.
26:09Well, Ingram is upset, basically, because Ingram feels he's let himself down.
26:18He feels embarrassed. He's acted stupidly, and now he's getting a telling off. A lot of it's self-centred.
26:27Hence his comment, I'm saying silly things at times simply because I want to go home.
26:32You see, the immediate reaction from many children today is if they're caught out and they're reprimanded, they try and bring the whole situation back to themselves, that they actually are the offended against party, that people need to feel sorry for them.
26:52The fact that Ingram's sort of blubbing is water for ducks back to me. The fact is, Ingram chose to be rude to the housemaster, and if Ingram is now unhappy about the whole situation, then I'm pleased he's unhappy. Then he may learn something from it.
27:07Good.
27:07It's certainly not like James to be upset during science.
27:16Science has been integral to my life since I was very small. My mum used to be the head of biology at a high school.
27:21James really enjoys science right from the word go.
27:25She'd be looking in the paper, she'd find something interesting, and even though I was about ten, she'd just make me read it, make me understand it, and that would become part of me.
27:33He's learning all the time and quite prepared to share his knowledge with anybody he can speak to.
27:39When I went into year seven, I knew most of the syllabus already, so I just coasted through. I managed to get 100% on one of my tests.
27:46Yes, people think I'm a science geek. I am a nerd, and I'm proud of it.
27:53I'll roll with that.
27:54Ingram, take your hand away. You don't need to hold your head up. You have muscles in your neck that'll do that for you.
28:01I know we're going to have a better lesson than we did yesterday.
28:11Yes, ma'am.
28:12Appalled by the pupils' work so far, English teacher Miss Gibson is going to take them back to basics.
28:18I'm going to test you on the technical accuracy of your writing. And we're going to do that by undertaking a dictation. A dictation is where I read and you write.
28:35In modern schools, the emphasis is on communication and self-expression, with pupils assessed through essay writing and coursework.
28:43But in the 1950s, it was all about spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
28:47Are you feeling confident, Jefford?
28:49Not really, but I'll give you a go then.
28:52Fortitude.
28:53Do you want to spell fortitude?
28:55No, I don't want you to spell fortitude. I'm telling you to have fortitude.
28:57Oh, OK.
28:58Yes.
28:59Punctuation.
29:00Yes.
29:01Right. The Bachelor reflected on his one rule in life.
29:10In GCSE English, students can get the top grades even if their spelling's not up to scratch.
29:16Bachelor is spelt incorrectly.
29:23Bachelor.
29:25Can't stop.
29:26Have another go.
29:27Sebastian Jefford is predicted a B grade for GCSE English.
29:32I can't spell it, mate. I don't have to spell it.
29:34Are you trying until you can?
29:36I'm just going to spell it the same way every time.
29:39Traditionally, girls are much better at English than boys, so how good's their spelling?
29:44No, batch. There's no T in it.
29:47Batch, L, O.
29:49Sounded L.
29:50Sounded L.
29:51So, pretty much every letter was wrong there.
29:54Guinea pig lover Jenny Ritzman is predicted an A at GCSE.
29:58It doesn't have a T in it, Jenny.
30:01L.
30:02Batch, L, O.
30:09Backlaw.
30:11What's my freak, Jenny?
30:13L.
30:14L.
30:15L.
30:16L.
30:17L.
30:18L.
30:19O.
30:24Jenny's other mistake is a little subtler.
30:27Any ideas?
30:28No.
30:29Ruby Lally's also predicted an A grade for GCSE.
30:35Do it large underneath.
30:37Sit down, Ruby.
30:38Does anybody know how to spell subtler?
30:52Sit down, Jenny.
30:56Clever-clogged Sam Wyville is predicted an A star.
31:00It's the end of the first week of term, and the headmaster's called a special assembly.
31:16Sit down, please.
31:17I'm absolutely delighted to announce that the two pupils who have the honour and the good fortune to be appointed head girl and head boy of this prestigious school, I've decided that head girl will be Victoria.
31:42Come on, if you'd like to come out, please.
31:43Ooh.
31:45Come out, please.
31:53Vicky might seem a surprising choice.
31:55She's been in constant trouble since day one.
31:58Don't you dare wolf-whistlin' my class, Victoria Buxton!
32:02Shark!
32:04So, would you go and stand and face the war as you were meant to do?
32:08Over there, please, and face the war.
32:09Over there, please, and face the war.
32:11In the 1950s, teachers often made troublemakers prefects, in the hope that responsibility would turn them into reformed characters.
32:19All right, all right.
32:20Vicky's selection gives James Ingram hope.
32:23I've decided that the head boy for this term will be Hudson.
32:28Yeah!
32:29Ooh!
32:30But not for long.
32:38Well done Hudson, very good.
32:39Good luck, have a good turn.
32:40Thanks.
32:41It was between me and Ingram at the beginning, but when he decided to go on his random run around the car park, it kind of knocked back his chances of becoming head boy a bit.
32:58So, I'm quite happy, and I'd be quite glad to see what kind of privileges they give me, like, extra pudding or something.
33:05No pudding for you, bro!
33:07But something's preying on the new head girl's mind.
33:10I don't really know what to say, to be honest, because I didn't expect it at all.
33:15I mean, I've always said, oh, it's good, because I know that I'm not going to get head girl, so therefore I can cause a bit of trouble.
33:21Whereas, I can't now.
33:26So, I'm just really confused at the moment, to be honest.
33:30But, um, yeah.
33:34Feeling guilty, the vicar's daughter has confessed to her part in last night's dorm raid.
33:40Well, I thought that I'd rather admit it now, then.
33:43But I specifically asked you.
33:45No, but I specifically asked you.
33:47And I did make 20.
33:48I called you in, and said to you, please tell me.
33:51Because I didn't want to get anyone else in trouble.
33:54No, no, you wanted what you've got.
33:57I mean, and that makes me more unhappy, is the fact it was, you know, one of my recommendations, that you were head girl, because you've turned yourself around.
34:07I know.
34:08And that's the thing.
34:09That's why I said I'd rather say it now, because I would rather not...
34:12I mean, if I...
34:15If I was to get found, if I was to admit it later on, then I'm more likely to...
34:20I mean, I'm probably losing my badge now.
34:22You've told me another line.
34:23You've just told me another line as well, haven't you?
34:25You've told me, saying that it was just you.
34:27When two girls were seen.
34:28But, no.
34:29I haven't said...
34:30I was saying that I will take full responsibility.
34:33No, no, no, no.
34:34There's two of you.
34:36And the only chance you've got of redeeming yourself is to tell us who the other one is.
34:40Ooh!
34:42That was Ashley, right?
34:45Had you gone into the boys' dormitory, you would be going, both of you.
34:49Had you gone into that dormitory, without a shadow of a doubt, you'd have been out of the school.
34:54I feel it prudent that you should be punished, and then we will wipe the slate clean.
35:04This particular incident happened before I appointed you as head girl.
35:10My faith in you as a head girl remains.
35:15Because I do not believe you will repeat such error of judgement.
35:21My decision is that, at 3.30 today, you will be sent to a part of this school who will clean.
35:33And you will carry on cleaning till I am satisfied that that particular job is done.
35:39Do you understand?
35:40Yes, sir.
35:42The girl's punishment is to clean the terrace they were caught sneaking along.
35:46I want you to sweep it.
35:48Yes.
35:49Clear it all up.
35:50And then I want you to completely scrub the steps.
35:54OK, so it's just this bare hair, this section?
35:56No, no, no, no.
35:57This is for now.
35:58Then I want the next section done.
36:00OK, Rachel.
36:01And if I find you talking to anyone, or anyone is interfering, then we'll do it all again tomorrow.
36:07That's my turn.
36:12Good hard work.
36:21For Ashley, scrubbing the floor on her hands and knees is well bad.
36:25For Vicky, still being head girl is even worse.
36:28I think it's shit.
36:30I don't feel like I'm allowed to be myself in here anymore.
36:33I was allowed to be myself for the first three days, and so what?
36:36I got six extensions, but at least I was having fun doing it.
36:38At least I could laugh at it.
36:39Whereas now, I'm doing a punishment as well as being head girl.
36:43And I know that I'm head girl for the next three weeks.
36:46And so it's not even funny because I can't be myself.
36:50I'm, like, now restricted to being head girl, not Vicky.
36:54What do you mean?
36:55Well, it looks not detergent.
36:56Darn sight better.
36:57The detergent's made it go a bit, um, make her, like, a white deposit.
37:01But I think that brings out the blue a lot better.
37:04It's very mucky.
37:05Mmm.
37:06Definitely approved.
37:08If the job's worth doing...
37:11Mmm.
37:12Let's go.
37:14She's smiling. Let's go, Vicky.
37:16I think Vicky has had a couple of hiccups.
37:21But I think she was a good choice as head girl.
37:24I think every task that she's given, she gives 110%.
37:29And I'm very pleased with her so far.
37:31Um, I think she was a very good choice.
37:34And I think she'll only improve.
37:36And she's got a very good influence over the girls.
37:38And, uh, and I think they aspire to be like her, really.
37:42Silence!
37:46It's Sunday morning.
37:48The kids have had a lion and a traditional English breakfast.
37:51Oh!
37:52And now it's the time they've been looking forward to all week.
37:55Letters from home.
37:56I usually just ring people or text them or email them or talk to them over the internet.
38:01Don't think I'll ever written letters.
38:04I think it's, um, a nicer way than, um, like, texting or ringing someone
38:07because you can make it more personal and you can write everything you want.
38:10It should be good to hear what's going on back home.
38:13Um, I gave most of my friends the address so I should have at least a couple.
38:19Ah!
38:20No!
38:21Yay!
38:22You sit on your own beds.
38:25I hope they all got something.
38:29Okay, uh, we'll start off with, uh, Philip Donald.
38:32Donald.
38:33Donald.
38:34Donald.
38:35It's yours.
38:36Sir.
38:37And one, two, three.
38:42Oh, you're obviously a mummy's boy.
38:44Uh, Hugh Gilroy.
38:45Are you a mummy's boy?
38:46No, sir, I'm not.
38:47Looks like it.
38:48I don't think they're all from a mum, sir.
38:49Thanks very much.
38:50You're either that or you're a stud.
38:52Five letters for James Ingram.
38:54Wow.
38:55A lot.
38:56Thanks, sir.
38:57And the last letter goes to Razak.
38:58Oh!
38:59It's a disappointing morning for many of the boys.
39:00Wow.
39:01Oh, I didn't get nothing.
39:02That's amazing.
39:03That's out of order.
39:04My mum's like, are you?
39:05My mum's so lazy, man.
39:06My mum didn't come back to me.
39:07For not one of them to write to me, you know, all my best friends have got loads and loads
39:11of mates and, you know, they all promised they'd write, and for not one of them to write,
39:16I've got to wait another week now.
39:17I was so looking forward to today to getting these letters, and it's really, really blew
39:21me mind out, and I just want to go and phone it until the problem is, really gutted.
39:40Some friends.
39:41The girls aren't even trying to be stiff upper-lipped.
39:46I really mowed them!
39:47Your feet and pigs.
39:49I know.
39:50I know.
39:51I know.
39:52You're a big pig.
39:53I know.
39:55I know.
39:56I know.
39:57I know.
39:58I know.
39:59I know.
40:00I know.
40:01I know.
40:02I know.
40:03I know.
40:04I know.
40:05I know.
40:06I know.
40:07I know.
40:08I know.
40:09I haven't really thought about it. I haven't thought about it at all.
40:12And then to see the actual handwriting of my mum and telling me about what she was doing in the sermon
40:18and what my sister did that day and what they heard for tea and things and just things like that.
40:23And you don't really think about it at all until it's actually written down on paper
40:27and you can see your mum's handwriting or your grandma's handwriting.
40:31And these guys crush it.
40:32And it's even worse for those that don't get any letters.
40:37I know it is. I know it is.
40:39I don't think they have this problem.
40:45After reading their letters, it's off to the classrooms to write their replies.
40:52It's the first time many of these kids have ever written a letter home
40:55and it brings out unexpected emotions.
40:59I do miss them, but I never actually thought I'd miss them this much.
41:04Because I miss them on the first day that I actually came here
41:06and that really surprised me because I couldn't wait to get away from home.
41:09Just like before, but now I just...
41:12I wish I'd really savour the last moments of when they were all around.
41:19I actually just told them that I was really sorry for everything I've done
41:22and I've been a really bad daughter, which I have been.
41:30Every conversation could be the last.
41:31I think when I go back, I'll just respect them a lot more.
41:34I'll help around the house, which is really...
41:37It sounds unlikely, but I actually will.
41:39And, um...
41:41I don't know. I just...
41:43I think I'll be a really changed person when I come out.
41:46I don't know if it sounds tacky, but I think I will.
41:51They've only been at the school a week,
41:53but already the boys are realising that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
41:59Coming here for the first few days has just made me realise
42:02how important family is,
42:05how devoted you have to be to them,
42:08how loving you have to be with them.
42:10Already I'm appreciating everything more.
42:14I appreciate my mum more, what she does for me.
42:16I just appreciate what everyone does for me.
42:18I'm just...
42:19I'm even...
42:20Yeah, I'm even missing my sister.
42:22That's saying something.
42:24Good, good, good.
42:25It's been a rollercoaster ride for the girls,
42:27but they too are starting to change.
42:30I really do feel like I'm changing.
42:32I don't actually feel like me.
42:34I feel a lot more grown-up, and that's just after a week.
42:37So I'm just thinking, three weeks, I'm going to be, like,
42:40really grown-up, which is kind of good.
42:43I'm going to need to prove to myself that
42:44I went through that 1950s experience,
42:47and I'm going to come out a better person,
42:48even though I told you it's going to be better.
42:50Part of me just wants to go home,
42:51just put right everything I've done wrong.
42:54I do just want to make them proud now.
42:56I just...
42:57I want to actually pass the O-levels
43:00and just make them proud.
43:03Stop fidgeting!
43:05How did she know?
43:08What the hell?
43:10The girls confront practical biology.
43:13Get out!
43:14Get out!
43:15You stupid little boy!
43:17The boys are testing the limits.
43:20Let's go.
43:21And the head girl's in big trouble.
43:23You have manacled my hands.
43:26You have left me with no alternative.
43:30Wow.
43:30Ladies and gentlemen,
43:33absolute cinema watching this here, man.
43:36Just kick back in.
43:38Kick back, relaxing with you all.
43:40We had some naughty girls
43:42and some naughty boys on this episode.
43:45Let's chat about it.
43:46When I come back,
43:47I'll think of a code word to use,
43:48but hold on a sec.
43:50Ladies and gentlemen,
43:51this was an absolute banger of an episode.
43:54I'm going to be sad when this show is done, man.
43:57But if you made it this far,
43:59you have the options of
44:01Jenny's Guinea Pigs,
44:02Toffee,
44:03or Galaxy.
44:04I'll leave that choice up to you.
44:06But you know what?
44:07There's something crazy
44:08that sometimes I feel like
44:09I'm the one that's being yelled at
44:11when I'm watching this show.
44:13Maybe been there,
44:14done that,
44:15been a bad kid,
44:16you know.
44:16So seeing them get in trouble
44:19is the same feeling that I had
44:21when, you know,
44:23fellow classmates
44:24would be laughing at me.
44:26Oh, yep,
44:26he's getting in trouble again.
44:28And then seldom
44:29when I didn't get in trouble,
44:30when I finally saw other people
44:32getting in trouble,
44:33it's great.
44:34I'm like, yes,
44:35finally,
44:36I'm not getting in trouble.
44:38So I'm having a blast.
44:39So when these kids are getting in trouble,
44:40I'm laughing extra,
44:42extra because, man,
44:44it feels good
44:45because no matter whether
44:46you're across the pond or not,
44:48kids do the darndest things.
44:50Kids get in trouble.
44:51Kids got potty mouths.
44:53You know,
44:53kids do bad things
44:55just like everywhere else.
44:56So I love to see it.
44:58And,
44:59and again,
45:00I've been on the record,
45:01you know,
45:01I wasn't no scholar in classes,
45:03but man,
45:04it does blow my mind
45:05how
45:06simple words
45:09most kids can't spell,
45:10man.
45:11And,
45:11and it looked like
45:12a lot of these kids,
45:13I think Jenny was up there as well,
45:15couldn't sound out,
45:16you know,
45:16you got to sound out
45:17a lot of these words
45:18and it,
45:20yeah,
45:20it kind of blew my mind
45:21a little bit.
45:22I wasn't,
45:22again,
45:22I was by no means
45:24a great scholar.
45:25Yes,
45:25I did great in some classes,
45:26you know,
45:27PE and eating most likely.
45:30Always got an A in eating,
45:31man,
45:31but nah,
45:33you know,
45:33I'm like,
45:34damn,
45:34man,
45:34some of these kids
45:35really can't spell,
45:36man.
45:36And it reminds me
45:38of the previous series,
45:39you know,
45:39it was the word,
45:40one of the words,
45:40I believe was tongue.
45:42And I'm like,
45:42damn,
45:42some of these kids,
45:43really can't spell for shit,
45:44man.
45:45So again,
45:46here,
45:47we got dumb kids here.
45:49You know,
45:49I was one again
45:50on the record,
45:51constantly time still learning.
45:52I,
45:52my,
45:53my whole life is a learning journey.
45:55I know,
45:56I almost know nothing.
45:58That's the way I believe.
45:59And,
45:59you know,
46:00I have the whole time,
46:01as long as I'm alive
46:03to learn as much cool things
46:04as possible.
46:05But man,
46:07some of these kids need help,
46:08man.
46:08I can't even think
46:09that it's worse now
46:10with the amount
46:11of damn distractions,
46:13constantly,
46:15you know,
46:15iPads and tablets,
46:17you know,
46:18et cetera,
46:18et cetera.
46:19When you were seeing Ashley
46:21doing her little dancing shit,
46:23that shit was starting to remind me
46:25of like an R&B pop video
46:26or some sort of music video there.
46:28But,
46:29you know,
46:29most of the kids
46:30just really act similar
46:31to the way that we,
46:32we are,
46:33you know,
46:34we were,
46:34you know,
46:35the boys,
46:36especially,
46:37excelling in physical education.
46:41Girls in our classes
46:42be on the corner.
46:45Very,
46:45very few participated
46:47in gym.
46:48And,
46:49yeah,
46:50they'd be in the corner
46:51chit-chatting,
46:53talking with the gym.
46:54Well,
46:55in our class,
46:56the gym teacher
46:57was kind of young.
46:58So,
46:58all the girls
46:59had like crushes.
47:00So,
47:00they were like
47:01super duper
47:02like talking
47:03to the gym teacher.
47:05But,
47:05like all the boys,
47:06we were just playing basketball,
47:07playing sports,
47:08you know,
47:09competitive stuff
47:10brought that out.
47:11I love that.
47:12And,
47:12still to this day,
47:12I don't care what,
47:13you know,
47:14I always loved,
47:15you know,
47:15competing.
47:16So,
47:17seeing the boys
47:18brought me a lot of joy
47:19because they were,
47:20you know,
47:20getting into the stuff
47:21more so than the girls.
47:23And now,
47:24I was going to say
47:24before we seen James Ingram's,
47:28you know,
47:28kind of tantrums and shit,
47:30but that the girls
47:31were moaning a lot more.
47:32You know,
47:33he had like Amy,
47:34Ashley,
47:35I think it was Vicky,
47:36I think it was Holly,
47:37you know,
47:37all these other girls
47:38were just like
47:39constantly just bitching
47:40and shit.
47:41And I'm like,
47:41damn,
47:41man,
47:42it's no different here.
47:44Ladies and gentlemen,
47:45it's no different.
47:46The girls never wanted
47:47to do much shit.
47:48They'd just be chilling out,
47:49talking shit about people,
47:51plotting some revenge
47:52or some shit
47:53on some girl
47:54that did some girl
47:54dirty and shit.
47:55So,
47:56it's crazy.
47:58And,
47:58I really,
48:00I really enjoy
48:01when they
48:02kind of show
48:03a little glimpse
48:03into the lives
48:05of some of the players,
48:06you know,
48:06some of the characters,
48:07I said players,
48:08some of the characters,
48:10you know,
48:10like James Ingram,
48:12that he enjoyed
48:13the chemistry
48:14and the science
48:14and stuff.
48:15So,
48:15I thought that was
48:16really cool.
48:16Like most boys,
48:17we like blowing shit up,
48:18you know what I'm saying?
48:19You got some bottle rockets,
48:21you know,
48:21fireworks,
48:22or,
48:23you know,
48:23I enjoyed,
48:25yeah,
48:25having those kind of
48:26bottle rockets,
48:26going outside,
48:27doing those little experiments.
48:29When I was younger,
48:31some of the gifts
48:31that I would get
48:32for Christmas
48:32were like chemistry kits,
48:34you know,
48:35some science kits
48:36that you can do
48:36kind of things,
48:37you know,
48:38do a little experiment.
48:40I even had this thing,
48:42it's not science stuff,
48:43but it was cool.
48:45You know,
48:45girls had easy bake oven,
48:47guys had creepy crawlers.
48:49Does anybody remember
48:51any of these two things here?
48:52My sister had
48:53the easy bake oven,
48:54and I had the creepy crawlers,
48:56creepy crawlers.
48:58I know corny and shit,
48:59but it was cool,
49:01man.
49:01You have your little oven,
49:02you're baking some like
49:03scorpions and shit.
49:04I don't know,
49:04man.
49:05So I would have been
49:06like this kid,
49:07just enjoying the science aspect.
49:10Yeah,
49:10I really did like the
49:12experiment aspect.
49:14you know,
49:14some stuff I didn't,
49:15you know,
49:17didn't gel with,
49:17didn't vibe with,
49:18but I really did enjoy that.
49:20So when you see
49:20a little small glimpse,
49:21like for example,
49:22Jenny,
49:23she showed,
49:23you know,
49:24her two guinea pigs,
49:25love guinea pigs
49:26and stuff like that.
49:27And you know,
49:29Ashley with a little,
49:31I'm gonna call her like
49:31a music video shit,
49:32her little dance shit.
49:33Did they really say
49:34that she was like
49:35dancing up on a,
49:36on a,
49:37on a headmaster
49:38or some shit like that?
49:39She was like grinding
49:39on some shit
49:40or did we just
49:41hear the wrong shit?
49:43I don't know,
49:43but she was dancing
49:44on somebody that they said,
49:45I'm like,
49:46holy shit,
49:47I'm hearing some
49:47wild childs here.
49:49I am proud of Vicky
49:50for finally saying something,
49:53but it's almost like Skye
49:54from,
49:55for those who watch
49:56Ladette to Lady,
49:57Aussie Ladette to Lady,
49:59you know,
49:59they gave the prefect thing
50:01to Skye
50:03who was kind of like
50:04the problem child
50:05of the group here.
50:06So it's kind of like
50:07the same thing.
50:07This girl has been
50:08getting constantly
50:08in trouble
50:09and now you have
50:11a little bit
50:11more responsibility.
50:12She thought that
50:13she can get away
50:14with murder essentially
50:15and still,
50:17you know,
50:18have a good laugh
50:18and stuff.
50:19So now she got
50:19a little bit
50:20more responsibility
50:20so that shit's
50:21going to weigh you down
50:22and I feel like
50:24at heart
50:25all these kids
50:26are good kids
50:27at heart,
50:27you know what I mean?
50:28Yeah,
50:28you got some little
50:29knuckleheads and stuff
50:30but this is what
50:31this thing is
50:31going to help them out.
50:33Give them a little structure
50:34who,
50:34you know,
50:35because everybody's
50:37upbringing is differently.
50:38The way everybody's
50:40parents raise you
50:41is different.
50:42You know,
50:42you could have
50:43super duper strict parents,
50:44you could have parents
50:45that beat your ass
50:46with a belt man
50:46back in the day,
50:47you know,
50:47et cetera,
50:48et cetera.
50:49Everybody's parents
50:50teaches their kids
50:51differently,
50:52you know,
50:52and I'm a firm believer
50:53of structure.
50:54You need a little structure
50:55to keep you in line
50:56a little bit,
50:57you know,
50:58this way so you're not
50:59being a menace to society,
51:00ladies and gentlemen.
51:01You don't want to be
51:01a menace to society.
51:02You don't want to be
51:03getting locked up,
51:04you know,
51:0520 different times
51:06like some of these stories
51:07that we hear with
51:08Lad's Army,
51:08they're getting in trouble
51:09with the law constantly.
51:11It's like an everyday thing.
51:12So I'm like,
51:13you know,
51:13this shit blows my mind.
51:14I'm like,
51:15damn, man,
51:15that little bit of structure
51:16would go a long way
51:18and I do feel,
51:20and we've already seen it
51:21with the first series,
51:22the second series,
51:23that they do become
51:24better individuals
51:26and stronger mentally,
51:29all that stuff.
51:30You can see the insecurities
51:31on a lot of these girls,
51:32you know,
51:34with the hair
51:35and all that stuff.
51:36So, you know,
51:36listen,
51:37I understand
51:37for now,
51:38I had an older sister
51:39into all that shit,
51:40music videos,
51:41doing the hair,
51:42makeup,
51:42all that bullshit.
51:44I didn't give two fucks.
51:45I'm like,
51:45oh, man,
51:46this shit sucks, man.
51:47Her friends come over
51:48and I'm like,
51:48I hate all this shit.
51:49I'm like,
51:49oh, yeah,
51:50I want to get the hell outside.
51:51So I understand.
51:52I understand that,
51:53you know,
51:54their image matters,
51:55you know,
51:56for their self-expression,
51:57whatever the reasons are
51:59and shit.
51:59But, yeah,
51:59this is another
52:00banger episode
52:01I really do enjoy
52:03when the kids
52:03get in trouble.
52:04You saw that one kid
52:07that he owned up
52:07hiding,
52:08you know,
52:08with his hiding spot
52:09and everybody was pissed off.
52:10I think Luke Mills
52:12and all these kids
52:14were like upset.
52:14Oh, why is she doing it?
52:15He's like fucking kiss ass
52:16and shit like that.
52:17But, hey,
52:18it takes more strength
52:19to own up to something
52:20and I respect that way more
52:23than some of these guys
52:24just trying to see
52:25how far they can get through.
52:26So, did you guys
52:27enjoy the episode?
52:28I feel like, man,
52:29every time,
52:29this is absolute cinema.
52:31Like, I'm just chilling out,
52:32laughing,
52:33having a great time
52:34and I feel like
52:36a lot of kids
52:36need this shit right now, man.
52:38I probably said that
52:39one, two,
52:40three thousand times
52:41by now,
52:41but I really feel like
52:42they need that, man.
52:43They really need
52:44some structure, man.
52:46You know,
52:46we don't want to have
52:47too many knuckleheads
52:48out there.
52:48You know,
52:48we already got bad apples
52:49out there, man.
52:50We don't need no more,
52:51but I do feel like
52:52a lot of these kids
52:53are good kids.
52:54So, I look forward
52:55to seeing more.
52:56Definitely really enjoy,
52:57again,
52:57when they show
52:58the little snippets,
52:59little bits and pieces
53:00of their lives
53:01because it's always cool.
53:02It's, you know,
53:02we all,
53:03we all different,
53:04you know,
53:04but we all have
53:05similarities to us,
53:07you know,
53:07besides eat shit,
53:08sleep, you know,
53:08shower, hopefully,
53:09you know,
53:09all that stuff.
53:10But anyways,
53:11enough of my yapping.
53:12Enjoy the episode.
53:13Felt like it was
53:13another banger episode.
53:15Looking forward
53:16to seeing more.
53:17I love all the headmasters,
53:18the teachers,
53:19you know,
53:19really keeping
53:20these kids in check.
53:22Matron,
53:22love her to pieces as well.
53:23She had a little smile
53:24on her face with Vicky.
53:26And yeah,
53:27we'll see some more.
53:27So use the code word.
53:29You have an option this week,
53:30one or two,
53:31whatever you want to use both,
53:32use it.
53:32Go at it, man.
53:33But it did make me want,
53:35I want some chocolate right now
53:37after hearing Jenny's names
53:39of the guinea pigs.
53:40I absolutely,
53:41I had one guinea pig growing up.
53:42So it just brought
53:43an instant smile to my face.
53:45So thank you guys.
53:46We'll see you soon.
